2012 Chicago Men’s Week 2 Floor Hockey/Hoops

Updated: June 21, 2012

June 17 – June 20 Video

Welcome Back Chicago Leaguers.  Feel free to check out the Week 2 Video above.  Before I get into the Week 2 Rankings, here is a quick plug for the new All Sports Series FansEdge Pick-Em contest.  To play you just go to allsportsseries.com from June 14-July 1 and on the right side of the homepage you pick who you think will win each day.  Really quick and easy.  2 people will win gift cards from FansEdge. The person who answers the most correctly and the person who simply plays the most (if there is a tie then I will pull out of a hat b/t those tied for the most days played).

Week 2 featured 12 teams playing floor hockey while the other 4 played their 2nd Hoops Contest.  Each team will play the sport they did not play in Week 2 in Week 6 on July 23rd. (Editor Note: Reader Discretion is advised– many Mighty Ducks references to follow)

To the Rankings we go..

1) Team Merar (Greater Than) – Currently tied for 1st with 35 points (Last Week: 1) – Listen I said the same thing in the Suburbs Wrap-Up.  The #1 spot is for the defending champs until they lose.  Right now it looks like they have no plans of dropping a game so they might be up here for a while.  In a sport which by no means is their strong suit, the Greater Than guys still managed a 5-3 floor hockey victory over Team Radist (Carriage Hill Kennels).  Brian “shoots well in floor hockey too” Deutsch and Paul “the Doc” Ravenna each netted 2 goals.  Andy “the ’02 1-1” Hirsh solid in between the pipes too.  Next week they are going to have to fight and claw to stay at #1 because they play…

2) Team Cohen (Stuart Levin & Associates Insurance) – Currently tied for 1st with 35 points (Last Week: 6) – That’s Right our first Matchup between #1 and #2 in the Rankings will be in Week 3 Flag Football.  @TeamCohen2 were a little heated with me this past week as they felt they were snubbed being #6 after their Week 1 Hoops Victory.  Well I cannot deny them any longer.  With an extremely impressive 10-4 victory over a good Team Horwitz (Steve’s Deli) Hockey team.  The 3-headed monster of Adam “Banks” Harris, Captain Andy “averman” Cohen and Jake “Guy Germain” Miller each recorded a hat trick in this game!  They had the most impressive victory in Week 2.   I don’t even need to pull an ESPN and make sure the rankings look good for “Big Monday” or “Fat Thursday” these two teams are rightfully at the top and will square off next week for the #1 spot.  The question on everyones mind is.. #Where’sBailen?

3) Team Dorfman (Teplitz and Bell Attorneys) – Currently tied for 4th with 30 points (Last Week:2) – So by ranking Team Cohen #2, I have broke one of my own guidelines… I really really don’ t like to drop teams that win. Good teams win close games when they dont play their best, so there should not be many instances when teams drop after a W. Team Dorfman did not even win a close game.  THEY MADE A STATEMENT against one of the best Hoops Squads in the whole league, defeating Team Glass (Crescent Movers) 80-53.  I think this team has regained the chip they had on their shoulder during the 2010 season.  Back then they were in the Burbs league and were the only team repping the ‘Brook and each week felt as if it was them against the world. Last year the all-star lineup might have gotten a touch complacent.  Well that’s gone now.  Ben “man in the middle” Lazarov had 16, Benny “the jet” Lalez had 15, and Eytan “3 wishes” Azaria also put in 15.  The only reason for the drop is that the hockey games are worth a little bit more in the standings.  With a softball win next week they will be right back in the top 2.  Last note: I asked Captain Daniel “DD” Dorfman after the game if he felt the subtraction of Zach Bulwa was affecting the way the team played? DD stated, “who?”  Well that’s that.

4) Team Watts (Jam ‘n Honey) Currently tied for 1st with 35 points (Last Week: 4) – Another week another win for these guys.  For those not aware of Tema Watts existence they are the big guys in black/red.  I have to admit, the basketball victory they got might have been expected because they could ball last year, but the floor hockey win really raises my eyebrows. Captain Jake “100” Watts has assembled a true team that seemingly can compete in any sport.  They got a hard fought 6-4 win over the gamely Team Saltzberg (the Whiskey Bar).  Eric “you have a linebacker name” Izzo scored a gigantic 3 goals to give the Jam ‘n Honeys enough to secure the W.  Flag Football is next week for these guys and I have it on good authority they are something to watch on the turf.

5) Team Greenberg (PopChips) Currently tied for 4th with 30 points (Last Week: 9) – Last week I played internal ping pong debating where to place these guys.  The PopChippers took the decision out of my hands last night with their 2nd Hoops win of the season. They round out the Top 5 as the last of the unbeatens entering week 3.  I’ll admit it, I didn’t foresee Team Greenberg coming into the season and sweeping their first two Hoops games.  That’s why we play the games folks.  They are winning games with balanced attacks.  This week Aaron “Engaged Health Solutions” Levy put in 11 and Jeff “Todd” Davis matched him with another 11.  Week 3 pits them up against Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports Marketing) in Softball.  I’m done predicting what this team does. What I do know is the Orange is fitting them a lot better than the Purple.  Let’s see how they do now that they are on everyone’s radar..

t- 6) Team Apuli (Giordano’s Pizza), Team Faye (Dr. Jacob DDS), Team Solof (Atomic Transport) Currently tied for 6th with 20 points (Last Week: NR) – Three Rookie Teams who all got their first win in Week 2 Floor Hockey.  Could I nitpick and try to break up this group of 3? Yes I could have. But that would just be splitting hairs.  Team Apuli got an extremely hard fought win over Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports Marketing) 3-2.  Kornblatt’s team dominated in hockey last year, so I’m going to go ahead and throw the “upset” word around.  Granted Jono “always a Free Agent” Matasar did make the switch from Kornblatt to Apuli in the 2012 off-season and his presence (and goal for that matter) just might have been the deciding factor.  Team Faye from a margin of victory stand point might have been the most impressive as they beat Team Bulwa (Crystal Lake Jeep) by 4.  John “Wayne Gretzky” Botica will lead the league at least for a few weeks in goals scored with 4 for Team Faye.  They have a helluva challenge next week against #4 Team Watts in Flag Football.  Team Solof (Atomic Transport) grabbed their first win in exciting fashion.  Matt “Kenneth Faried” Howard got a hustle hat trick that served to be the difference in this one. By this time next week I’m sure at least one of these teams will break away from the pack..

9) Team Glass (Crescent Movers) – Currently tied for 9th with 15 points (Last Week: 3) – This week’s biggest drop in the Rankings is Team Glass.  I don’t think they were rated too highly last week and I do think this is just a minor setback.  However, it is their first ever Hoops loss and it came in big fashion. I’m interested to see if this will rattle their confidence a bit before their next Hoops game (which will be in the playoffs).  Captain Adam “they needed a little help on the” Glass always has a good feel for the pulse of his team and I expect them to rebound in the near future.  Sam “QB1” Harris will lead an offensive attack in Football next week.  Ben “welcome to the wrap-up” Hewitt had 13 to lead his team in scoring Monday Night.  I do expect them to begin climbing back up the rankings in the weeks to come..

10) Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports Marketing) – Currently tied for 9th with 15 points (Last Week: 5) – Last week the ‘Bwa Squad began its ascent up the roller coaster with the slow creep toward the first drop.. Monday Night they reached that drop.. and fell.. Fast.. Listen this is what they do. They win a game and make you think that they have worked out the kinks and then they drop games you expect them to win. When I asked  Captain Matthew “can be reached on his Thursdee Phone” Kornblatt about the Loss, he stated “We won floor hockey last year.. That’s all that matters yo.” So there you have it.  Reed “Neidermeyer” Adler scored a goal while Matt “Mark Messier” Emer was somehow kept scoreless.. I’m launching an investigation into the size of the goals.  They could not have been regulation size.  Next week they play Team Greenberg (PopChips) one of the 5 remaining unbeatens in 16″ Softball.

Rest of the Pack (alphabetical order):

Team Bulwa (Crystal Lake Jeep) – Currently tied for 12th with 0 points (Last Week: 7) – Well at least they didnt get any flagrants this week.  I stand by what I said about this team last week.  They are going to be good. They have been shorthanded the first couple of weeks and maybe their depth is not as good as they thought but I promise you they will not be on the outside of the Rankings for too many weeks during this season.

Team Feldgreber (EFT Sports Performance)  Currently tied for 12th with 0 points (Last Week: NR) – I think this is another case of the schedule biting them.  They have played well 2 weeks in a row and just because they don’t have any points on the board doesnt mean they have nothing to build off of. This is a good squad and you shouldn’t take them lightly.

Team Horwitz (Steve’s Deli) – Currently tied for 12th with 0 points (Last Week: NR) – Graham “nasty” Conatser had 2 goals but it just wasn’t enough against the Hockey Power that is Team Cohen.  Mark my words this team is getting in the playoffs.  They paid me off. They’re already in. It has been decided.  Not Really.  Or have they? No I’m just kidding. Sort of. Ok they didn’t.  But I think they have enough to win some games over the next few weeks.

Team Kluever (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 12th with 0 points (Last Week: NR) – This Squad still remains somewhat of a mystery to me as I have not been able to take in too much of their games.  They have struggled a little bit in Hoops. But Lucky for them, the next 5 weeks of their schedule has no Basketball in sight.

Team Radist (Carriage Hill Kennels) – Currently tied for 12th with 0 points (Last Week: NR) – I feel for this team. They shouldnt be winless. Captain Eric “Kurt Gibson” Radist is hobbling around one knee and trying his hardest to get his team a W. He added 2 goals but it just wasn’t enough against the former champs. I’m rooting for these guys..

Team Saltzberg (the Whiskey Bar) – Currently tied for 9th with 15 points (Last Week: 8) – One of the two teams to fall out of the rankings.  Realistically they would be #11 if it were a top 11. They have points. From their week 1 win in Hoops and realistically did not suffer a bad loss in hockey.. These guys should have no problem getting right back into the top 10 within a week or 2.

Well that does it for the Week 2 Rankings. If your still reading, go back to work! Next week half the league has 16″ softball and the other half has flag football if you havent gathered that much already. The Gift of Life Walk for the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois is this Sunday June 24th at Soldier Field from 9-Noon. There is also a 5k portion.

If you have any interest in attending please let me know and I can get you a lot more info. It’s going to be a great event with close to 2,000 people!

If not see ya Monday for Week 3!
