June 24-27 Video

Week 3 Video Above for your viewing pleasure.. So we are 3 weeks into the Regular Season.  I like to think of that as the first real checkpoint of the season.  There has been enough variety in terms of Sports played to get a decent feel as to who the real competitors are for the top seeds and who might just be in store for an underachieving regular season… With that said let’s Rank shall we..

1) Team Cohen (Stuart Levin & Associates Insurance) – Currently tied for 1st with 55 points (Last Week: 2) –  #1 vs. #2.  #2 won and now becomes #1.  Pretty simple stuff..  Team Cohen has been on a tear in 2012 and Monday Night earned the right to be #1 in the Rankings when they knocked off the Defending Champions and Kings of the Rankings Team Merar (Greater Than) 18-15 in a defensive battle.   Captain Andy “Doug Flutie” Cohen tossed 3 TD Passes, 2 of which were caught by Ross “Stilts” Neuman.  I have two questions for Team Cohen: 1) Can they sustain the momentum through the bye week and into the volleyball tournament on July 9 and 2) Will you be able to survive the pressure of being the hunted instead of the hunter?  We’ll see in 2 weeks time.

2) Team Watts (Jam ‘n Honey) – Currently tied for 1st with 55 points (Last Week: 4) – 3 weeks of competition. 3 different sports played. 3 wins.  3 impressive and decisive wins at that for Team Watts.  If you don’t know.. now you know.  These guys are the real deal and they are coming for that #1 Spot. Stats Sentence  I’m not sure how their volleyball squad is but based on the fact they have been good in virtually everything I have no reason to believe they don’t have a run in them for the Knockout Rounds of the Tourney.

3) Team Dorfman (Teplitz and Bell Attorneys) – Currently tied for 1st with 55 points (Last Week: 3) – Their bats were extremely active.  They hit so well the lights decided to not turn on.. That must have been it.  I might not have given this team as much notoriety in the last two weeks as I should have.  Maybe because Team Dorfman is always such a force that I take it for granted… Just to recap. They won the 1st ever All Sports Series in 2010.  They also were the 2011 Chicago League Runners-Up.  Now they have retooled and are coming for more hardware.  They are also extremely good in volleyball.  If I had to bet on one squad to knock Team Cohen from the pedestal of the #1 spot on July 9 it would be the Dorfmanators.

4) Team Merar (Greater Than) – Currently tied for 6th with 35 points (Last Week: 1) – I had the most trouble placing the Greater Than Defending Champs than any other team this week.  How much can you really drop a team for losing to the #2 team in the Rankings.  I settled on #4 … now let me tell you why… They have still picked up wins in 2 sports and even with the L in Flag Football this week, it is a strength of theirs. Michael “some people are giving me some flack for naming you 2011 MVP, and they are all on your team” Bailen threw a Tuddy and also ran one in. Unfortunately they just ran out of time at the end of the game.  Captain Mike “Congratulations!” Merar will no doubt have his guys ready to go in the volleyball tourney.  I don’t see them dropping from #4.

5) Team Apuli (Giordano’s Pizza)– Currently tied for 4th with 40 points (Last Week: t-6) – When games go down to the wire, you learn a lot about your team. Will they keep their composure? Will they crumble? Well Team Apuli learned that no situation is too big for them this week when they won 20-14 in 2OT against Team Feldgreber (EFT Sports Performance).  In what surely was an intense battle,  Brian “my favorite” Martin threw 2 TD passes to Colin “this is guy is everywhere” Rice in regulation.  Along with Team Dorfman and another team I will get to soon enough, I’d say they are one of my favorites to win the Volleyball Tourney in 2 Monday Nights.  Colin is that good.

6) Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports Marketing) – Currently tied for 4th with 40 points (Last Week: 10) – Last week I wrote about Team Kornblatt’s tendency to ascend and fall on their roller coaster ride of a season.  Well they proved me right, coming back from a week 2 loss and getting the Week 3 W 12-5 in 16″ Softball over last week’s 5th Ranked Team Greenberg (PopChips).  Philly “the Manimal” Weisberg thunderstruck a huge 3-run bomb to break the game wide open for the Bwa Squad.  Jarrett “spells PitcKher with a K” Annenberg fanned 8!  You heard me 8 strikeouts.  In an exchange after the game he told me that in the offseason he has been doing Stairs as a way to gain leg strength and be able to keep the height on his K ball in the late innings.  Impressive stuff.  This is also the the 3rd of my 3 favorites to take home the whole Volleyball Tourney. Last year they did just that.  I think next week could possibly be the exit off the roller coaster for these guys and get them going towards more Ws before the Playoffs.

7) Team Glass (Crescent Movers) – Currently tied for 6th with 35 points (Last Week: 9) –  Team Glass is right where they need to be after the first 3 weeks.  They are primed for another playoff run and I think this year they have what it takes to get past the the Final 4.  However I can’t comment to their flag football skills just yet because they were victims of a late game scratch from their opponents this week.   I do know that Sam “QB1” Harris is bursting at the seems for a chance to show off his play-making ability. The whole squad will get the chance in a few weeks.

8) Team Bulwa (Crystal Lake Jeep) – Currently tied for 9th with 25 points (Last Week: NR) – “Welcome Back. Welcome Back. Welcome Back.” (by Mase).. Anyways Welcome back to the Winner’s Circle for what once was a front runner turned dark horse candidate to win the whole darn thing..  Remember Captain Zach “can’t pitch when the Camera is on him” Bulwa has stolen gathered pieces from other teams and combined them with guys who won the 2011 Suburbs League Championship. They are for real and if not for a crazy hard schedule at the beginning of the season I think others would have more of an eye on them.  Sam “Ichiro” Harmelech played a great left field and was a great lead off man for the Bulwaers.  Adam “Dunn” Bernkopf added a Big HR in their 18-7 thrashing.  I expect these guys to be players in the vball tourney too.

9) Team Greenberg (PopChips)- Currently in 8th with 30 points (Last Week: 5) – As I wrote above for #1 Team Cohen.. I think it’s alot easier being the hunter than remaining the hunted for an extended period of time.  I think the #5 Ranking from last week put some pressure on Team Greenberg for the first time and it just didnt help them this week.  However, I think the schedule was also unkind to them as Team Kornblatt is one of the better 16″ ball clubs around.   Harrison “has his picture on the wall at the Zoo in Cabos San Lucas” Kusy-Leavitt went 3 for 3 in the game but it just wasnt enough.. Captain Elliot “who definitely enjoys the FansEdge Pickem Game” Greenberg was seen hitting infield practice to his team in the dark after the game (well it was dark during the game too).. When the practice session ended the team met at the pitcher’s mound and began their routine team handshakes which took about 15 minutes.. They are a meticulous bunch.

10) Team Horwitz (Steve’s Deli) – Currently tied for 9th with 25 points (Last Week: NR) – Rounding out the Top 10 is Team Horwitz who hit the leather off the ball on Monday Night.  They managed their first win of the season and couldnt have been any happier afterwards.  Captain Jon “the Wiz” Horwitz decided to take everyone out for cheesecake at Steve’s Deli.  Mike “the evil dentist” Gilbert received the biggest piece for going 5 for 5 in the game.  These guys won 19-4 over Team Atomic.. 19 runs is the largest of the season so far.. something to definitely hang their hats on.  Since this is a new squad I don’t know what to expect in terms of volleyball.. However week 3 showed us you don’t want to face these guys in the Semi-Final Softball game.

Rest of the Pack (alphabetical order):

Team Faye (Dr. Jacob DDS) – Currently tied for 13th with 20 points (Last Week: t-6) –  NEED STATS

Team Feldgreber (EFT Sports Performance)  Currently tied for 15th with 0 points (Last Week: NR) –Heartbreaking defeat for these guys in 2OT and they are still searching for their first win.. If I had to predict it right now I think they get hot at just the right time and sneak into the playoffs with a bit of momentum and swag in their step.. Just a hunch.. We will see.

Team Kluever (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 15th with 0 points (Last Week: NR) – N/A

Team Radist (Carriage Hill Kennels) – Currently tied for 9th with 25 points (Last Week: NR) – They hit the tar out of the softball as well.  All of them did.  Captain Eric “continues his Kirk Gibson impression” Radist pitched as well as he could on 1.5 knees.

Team Saltzberg (the Whiskey Bar) – Currently in 14th with 15 points (Last Week: NR) – Sometimes you just are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Team Bulwa was a sleeping giant at this point and Team Saltzberg had the unfortunate luck of facing them in a week that they HAD to have.  “Well Played” Joe Malachak did have a 2 Run Bomb in the Loss.

Team Solof (Atomic Transport) – Currently tied for 13th with 20 points (Last Week: t-6) – Another one of these teams that are up and down.. Not sure what the volleyball squad will do because this is their first year.. What I do know is Matt “sudo Captain” Howard will be yelling “Bump, Set, Spike” to his teammates each and every time the ball is on their side of the court.

That’s it from the Rankings.  Have a great 4th of July and I will see you all on July 9th at Windy City for the Volleyball Tournament.
