2012 Chicago Men’s Week 7 Flag Football/ Softball – Playoff Preview

Updated: August 3, 2012

Week 7 Video

The video for Week 7 is available at the link above.  It’s Time!  The regular season is behind us and it’s Playoff Time!  The bracket is  all set.  I’m not going to do a straight up Rankings this week.  I assume the Playoffs will serve as a pretty strong Rankings system over the next 2 weeks. Instead I will just give a preview of each game and try to give a little insight/analysis of what is to come throughout the Playoffs.  The way I’m going to organize the write-up is do a little analysis on the Top 4 Seeds who get buys in the Opening Round.  I will write about 1 of those 4 squads, then immediately after preview the game which they play the winner of.  Let’s get to it..

Here are the Standings going into the Playoffs:

1. Team Dorfman (Teplitz & Bell Atttorneys at Law) – 127 points

All Sports Series started in 2010.  Team Dorfman has played in each of the 3 summers with All Sports Series.  For the 3rd Time they can call themselves Regular Season Champs.  Now the question is will they mimic their 2010 campaign when they became Champions or the 2011 campaign when they came up just a little short.   They have played the greater portion of 2.5 years with an X on their backs so this is nothing new.  This past week they bounced back and avenged their only loss of the regular season (Flag Football to Rival Team Horwitz) by winning their last flag football game against Rival Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports Marketing).  Benny “the Jet” Lalez hit Joe “the Dream” Hakimian for a couple TDs last Monday night which was enough to get the W.  The Defense was also anchored by Daniel “Isreal Idonje” Dorfman and Benji “goes to Tim Tebow’s barber” Patzik at MLB.  As the #1 seed it is obvious they have enough to make a deep run into the Playoffs for the 3rd straight year.. They will face the winner of the #8 v. #9 game in Hoops on next Monday night..

#8. Team Radist (Carriage Hill Kennels) – 65 points v. #9. Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports Marketing) – 58 points

No secret these are two of my favorite squads.. Unfortunately for both they have the #1 Seed staring them down in the Elite 8.  But before they can worry about #1 Team Dorfman, they have to get past each other.. Let’s recap how they each got here.. At this point last season Team Kornblatt was entering the Playoffs as the #3 seed and feeling pretty strong.  They ended up falling in the 1st round to eventual Champs Team Merar.  This caused some roster shake-up that at times has seemed genius and at other times made it seem as if they have not yet gelled.  These guys are definitely stronger in the Hoops dept. compared to last year’s team thanks to the addition of “Jay” Sean Wallis.  Team Kornblatt has been up and down all year and ended the regular season on a down note losing to #1 Team Dorfman in Flag Football for the 2nd straight season.  Derek “the Freak” Reinglass did all that was humanly possible getting a number of sacks while twisting and turning his way to 2 scores on D. He was awesome.  Adam “QB12” Gilbert came in late in the 2nd half and threw 2 TDs. They will go up against Team Radist who are entering the first Playoff run of their All Sports Series’ careers.  They just missed out in 2011 and swore that would be the last time.. They finished in the top half of the league with the #8 seed which is a very impressive turnaround for anyone.  They have rallied around their fallen Captain Eric “Happy Birthday!” Radist who suffered a knee injury early in the Summer.  While Team Kornblatt stumbled into the Playoffs, Team Radist is coming in off a nice W.  Bryan “Keith” Van Horn finishes 2 regular season Flag Football games with 7 Total TDs. Very impressive stuff.  He connected with Justin “Ping Pong” Kaminsky for a score on Monday Night.

The game between these two is going to be a hard fought defensive battle.  I’m not expecting the Stats sheet to be filled up because both teams work to hard on D to let that happen.  I just hope for whoever wins they will have something left in the tank to make it interesting with #1 Team Dorfman later in the night.

#2. Team Cohen (Stuart Levin & Associates Insurance) – 122 points

For those following along from last year, if you think the final regular season standings look awfully familiar, well they are.  In 2011 Team Dorfman was the #1 seed and Team Cohen was the #2 seed.  Team Cohen hopes that similarities to the 2011 Playoffs end with the seeds.  In 2011, Team Cohen failed to get out of the 1st round as they lost in a Hoops game.  They came back this year and went right back to work.  They have been near the top of the Standings and Rankings from Week 1 and did that without some of the off-season buzz/recognition that other teams garnered.  They have been very solid in every sport and have a squad that is built for a long Playoff run.  However, before they can worry about making a Playoff run they will need to advance past the Elite 8 where they could end up facing one of the best Hoops squads in All Sports Series…

#7. Team Bulwa (Crystal Lake Jeep) – 72 points v. #10. Team Feldgreber (EFT Sports Performance) – 53 points

Team Feldgreber will make their first ever Playoff appearance on Monday Night.  They needed a win and some help to claw their way into the Playoffs and not only are they in but they got all the way up to the #10 seed.  They got their win on Monday night in solid fashion behind several hits from Steve “Chris” Paul and Dustin “Pedroia” Bernstein.  So they have a lot to be happy about.. Except for their draw in the Opening Round.  Team Bulwa, as I have been mentioning all summer, is a mix of several athletes that won the 2011 Suburbs League and made a deep run in the 2011 Chicago League as well.  Please do not let the #7 next to their names fool you.. They are coming into the Playoffs off a Flag Football victory.. Mike “My QB Rating is perfect you can quote me on that.” Maione threw 5 TDs on Monday Night.  2 of which were snagged by Ricky ” #11 in your programs and hearts” Silverman and another 2 were caught by Adam “enter name of some Olympics high jumper here” Bernkopf.   They are one of the best Hoops squads around and fully intend on making a run to the Final 4.. To do so they’d of course need to get past both Team Feldgreber and #2 Team Cohen in the same night.. Which will be no easy feat!

#3 Team Merar (Greater Than) – 95 points

The Defending Champs come into this year’s Playoffs as the #3 seed.  Last year, on their improbable title run they were the #6 seed.  What does that mean for the rest of the field? I’ll tell ya in about a week and a half.   They have had a much more consistent run in the regular season than they did in 2011.  I think mostly because they have been able to play the whole year with the reassurance that they definitely have enough to win the whole thing no matter what seed they have.  Champions need to retool too. So they brought in 2 key contributors with some young/fresh legs Jake “younger bro to Matt” Weiner and Bradley “younger bro to Brian” Deutsch.  They are also finally healthy for the first time all Summer and it couldn’t come at a better time. They wound up with the #3 seed after beating #4 seed Team Watts (Jam ‘n Honey) 11-10 in a really entertaining Softball game on Monday Night. Paul “e” Ravenna drove in 4 while “Thunder” Dan Roseth made his comeback to All Sports Series by driving in 2 more.  Now the question is who will these guys face in the Elite 8 Monday Night?

#6. Team Saltzberg (Whiskey Bar) – 73 points v. #11. Team Greenberg (PopChips) – 50 points

Rematch Alert.  Always interesting when you play the same team in the final week of the regular season and in the Opening Round of the Playoffs.  Of course the whole changing the sport thing sort of throws a wrinkle into that.. Last Week Team Saltzberg got the win 37-12. Tom “I’d take him on my fantasy team” Barnett threw for 4 TDs.  He did have one mistake that Team Greenberg capitalized on when Jeff “Pick 6” Davis took an INT back to the house.

Gotta love 2 teams both playing in their first All Sports Series Playoff game against one another.. Whoever comes out of the Opening Round will be pleased they have that bit of Playoff Experience before going toe to toe with the Champs.  Team Saltzberg is a squad that flew under the radar for really the entire season.  Coming into the VBall Tourney on July 9 they had only 15 points and were looking to just stay afloat.  Then they managed to eek out a few crucial VBall points and used that momentum to springboard into the #6 seed.  They have been very good at Hoops this season winning both of their games.. Going 2-0 in Hoops is usually strong indication of what will come at Playoff Time. Unless you happen to be staring down another 2-0 team.  Team Greenberg also won both of their Hoops contests.  Both of which came in the first 2 weeks of the season.  They have been up and down in the last month but Hoops has definitely been a strong suit of theirs.  These guys are All Sports Series vets at this point and definitely don’t want to see their initial Playoff game result in an L.  I think both teams have enough to upend Team Merar but it will definitely take a lot.

#4 Team Watts (Jam ‘n Honey) – 90 points

In week 6 they snatched a win from the jaws of defeat. In week 7 they were so close to doing the same and earning the #3 seed, but they fell just 1 run short against Team Merar.  Ben “Sheets is the first baseball player with Ben in the name that I could think of” Jenzen drove in 3 and Bobby “on the 2012 MVP Ballot” Dobry had 3 hits as well.  These guys have been super impressive in Hoops and Flag Football this season.  Well I’m going to throw Softball in as well.  Last year Team Merar proved they were the best softballers around and for Team Watts to go against them and lose 11-10 is pretty a telling sign.  I fully expect these guys to be on their A-game as Captain Jake “amped” Watts has been gearing his guys up for the Playoffs since March.  Who will they play in the Elite 8 on Monday Night?

#5 Team Apuli (Giordano’s) – 87 points v. #12 Team Horwitz (Steve’s Deli) – 48 points

Team Apuli comes into the Opening Round of the Playoffs as the highest seeded team not to receive a bye.  They just missed out on that by a meager 3 points.. They also come in after a thrilling 23-22 Softball W over Team Glass (Crescent Movers).  (Editor’s Note:  The previous sentence is not a typo the game was really 23-22).  It’s hard to single out a few people when your team accounts for 23 runs in a single game but I will try anyways.. Jordan “Inside the Parker” Rosenberg had a dinger and Michael “on the 2012 MVP Ballot” Glink went 5 for 5 with 2 HRs and 6 RBI.  Woooah.  Team Apuli has been in the top third of the Standings for most of the Summer.  Their vice however, has been Hoops.  They were 0-2 this season.  And everyone knows about what happens when you put a 5 seed against a 12 seed.. Anything.. Enter Team Horwitz.  The final team to qualify for the Playoffs and they have done so by a pretty slim margin.  They met the definition of “backing into” the Playoffs, dropping their final two games of the regular season.  However, none of that matters now.  They have one game to pull off an upset.  Team Apuli has one game to prove that their 2 Hoops losses were just a small chink in the armor.  Who will survive and advance?  Will the winner be able to give Team Watts a run for their money?  It all goes down next Monday Night.

Thanks to everyone for reading, have a nice weekend and good luck on Monday Night.
