2013-14 Hoops – Week 3 (Oct. 27)

Updated: October 31, 2013

Welcome back to the Weekly Power Rankings.  With 3 games in the books it’s easier to see the Division races starting to take shape.. Still very VERY early however.  Before we get into the actual Power Rankings, here is a link to the Weekly Video Highlights.

Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Highland Pop) – 3-0, 1st in Eastern Conference

For the 3rd consecutive week Team Lalez is sitting atop the All Sports Hoops Power Rankings.  This week they made quick work of the very shorthanded Team Harmelech.  They continue to shoot the lights out every week and what is worrisome for the rest of the League is that this just seems to be the status quo.  At no point this year have they gone on a drought from the field. There always seems to be an open shot somewhere on the floor for them as they have several floor generals including Team Captain Benny “the jet” Lalez.  It’s simple, if they are open, the ball is going in the basket.  They run 9 deep each week, stay fresh, love to make the extra pass and also happen to be long on Defense.  There is a ton of talent spread out amongst the All Sports Hoops teams.. Team Lalez just happens to have more than their fair share.

2. Team Kozin (SLA Insurance) – 3-0, 1st in Western Conference

Determined to stay on pace with Team Lalez and hopeful to grab hold of that #1 Spot is Team Kozin.  For 3 straight weeks now I have sung their praises for quickly gelling together.. Considering most of these guys didn’t even know each other before the Season started let alone play Hoops together, I’d say their start is fairly remarkable.  Matt “efficient” Wolk went for a team high 25 points, making 12 of his 13 attempts.  The guy is big, smart and doesn’t force the issue.  He also added 10 boards to round out the Double Double this week.  These guys are going to be a tall order for anyone in their path and next week Team Holzman gets the call.

3. Team Apuli (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 2-1, tied for 2nd in Western Conference

See the big guy towering over everyone else in the picture above?  Allow me to introduce Dan “the Big Show” Stone.  Stone is a wall in the middle of the lane for Team Apuli and really helps clean up the paint for them.  He’s averaging nearly 18 and 8, numbers that I actually think can go up, as he plays more with this squad.   I think some may be surprised about Team Apuli’s 2-1 start, but let me remind you, if not for a weak few minutes in the first half Week 1, they’d be 3-0.  They have taken down strong teams and really have everything you could want on a Hoops squad.  They have strong guard play, an electric scorer in Eddy “lightning” Tellez and the above mentioned size from the Big Show.  Watch out.

4. Team Schwartz (Stems) – 2-1, 2nd in Eastern Conference

Sunday Night gave us our first look at the FULL Team Schwartz squad and let me tell ya.. They looked pretty, pretty good.  I can say this about many teams in All Sports Hoops, but if I had to hold it to just one team — the description for Team Schwartz would be — Hungry.  You can literally see it on their faces as they get down in their stances on the Defensive Floor that they legitimately want to win.  Not just the game.  Obviously they want to win the game, but they want to win that very possession.  They want to win in every instance during each moment of the game.  It’s the G>T way.  Jason “@jayemvee” Vismantis went off for the 2nd straight Game as he netted 28 points and added 5 boards.  These guys are the real deal and I expect them to be at or near the top of the Power Rankings all season long.

5. Team Maione (B. Weinstein Associates) – 2-1, tied for 2nd in Western Conference

This could be the most talented Team in the League — which shows the depth of the League — considering they are coming in at #5 this week.  Again, they are the reigning All Sports Series Chicago Summer League Champs.  They have 9 guys who can all put it in the bucket and because of that they never go into a slump (much like Team Lalez) — which means on Defense you need to really work to get stops against them.  Open shots = Wins for this squad.  Chris “copy/paste” Wroblewski and Mikey “still open right now, where ever he is” Weisberg combined for 54 points on Sunday Night and that is good enough to be the Co-Accelerrated Physical Therapy Performers of the Week.   They get to take on #3 Team Apuli next Sunday and I can’t wait!

6. Team Goldin (Sanders Court Peditrics) – 1-2, tied for 4th in Western Conference

Forget their record. These guys are a top Team in All Sports Hoops.  They’ve had a tough schedule so far and while everyone wants to win each and every game they play what really matters is next March and April. These guys are going to be a factor during the Playoffs and that’s what really matters.  Brandon “@DaivonAgusta_CC” Lathon had 21 points for his crew on 15 shots. I’d like to see him get the ball up more actually if possible. Really fun to watch. These guys will try to rebound in Week 4 against Team Bauer.

7. Team Zimmerman (Teplitz & Bell Attorneys) – 1-2, tied for 3rd in Eastern Conference

First one is always the hardest.  So Team Zimmerman is on the board and now on the right track in 2013.  The Schedule bid them no favors in the first two weeks of the Season and I think that overshadowed the strong talent that is on Team Zimmerman. Eugene “fills it up” Connor is in the Top 10 in the League in scoring, averaging over 21 points a game.  They also have plenty of size Max “talls” Boton who is averaging just under 20 a night.  People might be sleeping on these guys in gold but that would be a giant mistake as I really anticipate these guys are going to start climbing up the Power Rankings.

8. Team Bauer (Jam ‘n Honey) – 1-2, tied for 4th in Western Conference

Tough Loss for the 2nd straight week but if you look at who their losses are against (#2 Team Kozin and #3 Team Apuli).. You’ll see that these guys can easily be ranked in the top 5 with a bit of luck.  Jabarri “leads the League in Scoring through 3 Weeks” Reynolds is averaging over 28 points a game as he went for a gigantic 36 on Sunday Night.  Also, Evan “quite the scorer as well” Zahniser is averaging 23 points per game for Team Bauer.  What I’m trying to say is Team Bauer has the necessary point scorers to lead them and definitely have enough depth to fill out the squad to be one of the premier Teams in the League.  They need to hold the other teams down a bit as they are allowing over 76 points a game.. If they can contest shots just a bit more on the perimeter I think they really could go the distance.  Plenty of time to work on that as well.

Rest of the Pack

Team Eilian (Crystal Lake Jeep) – 1-2, tied for 3rd in Eastern Conference

Not trending the way they’d like to be since their Week 1 W.  They have two 20 point scorers — David “the Dream” Hakimi and Erik “Rosen Rosen” Rosen.. These guys have been shouldering a lot on the Offensive end.. There are other guys on the squad who are more than capable of putting the ball in the bucket and I think in the next few weeks they will get a bit more balanced which should help them as the regular season rolls on.

Team Harmelech (iShot) – 1-2, tied for 3rd in Eastern Conference

They were way shorthanded. Like literally didn’t have enough hands on the court at once.. Not much to analyze here.. Playing the #1 Squad didn’t help matters much either.  They’ll likely bounce back in Week 4.

Team Holzman (Groupon) – 1-2, tied for 4th in Western Conference

Said the same thing last week — they just need time.  There are several guys on this club that have never played together nor even met before a couple weeks ago.. Good thing about All Sports Hoops — they have plenty of time.  Alex “parmo” Parmacek and Jeremy “I think we have the last name correct now” Mizraji both went for 17 on Sunday.  Clearly, they have pieces.. just need to fit them all together.

Team Shamberg (Sunset Foods) – 0-3, 6th in Eastern Conference

Not the start they wanted.  I really mean this.. It’s ONLY OCTOBER! There is SO SO MUCH time for these guys to get on the right track.  I’m not pushing the panic button for anyone yet.. Not even close.

That’s it for the Wrap-Up this week.  Have a great weekend.  See ya Sunday Night.  GO BULLS!
