2013-14 Hoops – Week 4 (Nov. 3)

Updated: November 6, 2013

Welcome back to the Hoops Wrap-Up… Week 4 saw many of the rich get richer.. What’s important to note — there are still FOURTEEN WEEKS left in the Regular Season (not to mention the 6-Week Playoff Marathon).  So no reason to fret if the first four weeks did not go as planned.  Any and all things can be flipped on their heads by this time next month (or in two or three).  Here is a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights.  Ok on to the Power Rankings.

Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Highland Pop) – 4-0, 1st in Eastern Conference

At 7pm Central Standard Time I already had it ready in my ahead to touch on Team Lalez broke their 1-Week old record of 105 Points from Week 3 by putting up a whopping 106 on Sunday Night… Little did I know, that record would only stand for a couple short hours.. More on that later.  Anyways, it seems like you “cannot stop Team Lalez, you can only hope to contain them…”  They have followed the same script for 4 straight weeks now.. They get involved in a well played opening to the game. Usually trading buckets with the other team while they find their rhythm.. Then somewhere between the last 8 minutes or so of the first half and the opening 6 minutes of the second half, they just go off!  It’s been a new person each and every week who leads the brigade, but without fail they just get scorching from 3 and then its over.  They are like a well-trained boxer.. Just waiting for their KO punch.  It’s going to be tough take them down. Quick shout out to David “D.D.S.” Gershenzon who put up THIRTY SEVEN points on Sunday Night.  They are loaded. Prepare accordingly.

2. Team Kozin (SLA Insurance) – 4-0, 1st in Western Conference

It’s not like I feel bad for these guys — they are 4-0 — there is little to feel sorry about.. However, I really really would like to be able to put them at #1 but with Team Lalez holding firm atop the mountain there just isn’t space for them.  Either way, the real story for these guys is for the 4th time in as many weeks they are standing in the winner’s circle.  The twin towers of Josh “great socks every week” Davis and Matt “you got a haircut this week didn’t you” both actually hurt their averages by scoring a meager 18 a piece.  Wolk also grabbed SIXTEEN Rebounds.  The guy is the Kevin Love of All Sports Hoops.  Your Welcome.  A third guy has stepped up for these guys in all four games and this week it was Andrew “crackers of” Graham who scored 17 of his own in the Win.  They will have their hands full with the lurking Team Goldin in Week 5.

3. Team Maione (B. Weinstein Associates) – 3-1, 2nd in Western Conference

They are the highest ranked 1-Loss Team after they put up an All Sports Series (not just this League, EVER) record – 128 Points – on Sunday Night. They averaged almost 3 points per minute in Week 4.   THAT’s ALOT.  Quick Point totals from Sunday — Josh “@JBart20” – 32, Captain Anthony “twan” Maione – 29, Mike “P” Weisberg – 19, Bradley “the middle” Deutsch – 18 and Chris “copy/paste” Wroblewski had a measly 15.  They just launch it.  They also can pressure the ball for 44 minutes.. Something that could cause an interesting dynamic come Playoff Time.  There was some chatter about them not being ranked highly enough in the Power Rankings the past couple of weeks.. Well, if all you need is a little motivation to put up 128+, here’s some fuel — As impressive as they were in Week 4, they still might rely too heavily on the 3, and if they go cold (as they did in Week 2) — they will find themselves in a dog fight.  Anyways, back to the positive stuff — they are the @AcceleratedPT Performers of the Week for the second week in a row! Congrats.

4. Team Schwartz (Stems) – 3-1, 2nd in Eastern Conference

The true gripe of the week in terms of Ranking has to be Team Schwartz.. They’ve been locked in at #4 for a couple weeks despite being on a three game winning streak.  #3 was all but theirs until Team Maione decided they’d rewrite the History books.. Anyways, these guys have been on point since getting their full crew to the League starting in Week 2.  Captain Matt “plays like a rugged third baseman” Schwartz has a tight knit crew that has played with each other on many levels and for many years. Jason “DOWN on the BLOCK” Vismantas is averaging a cool 24 points per game which is good enough for 2nd Highest average in the League.  Jon “Hydrate” Sider had a near double-double w/ 11 points and 8 boards and Austin “3:16” Brown played some spectacular D that won’t show up in the Stat sheet.  These guys are the epitome of “never say die” as they have actually trailed near halftime in all three of their victories.  They just keep fighting to make the other team break.  So far so good.

5. Team Goldin (Sanders Court Pediatrics) – 2-2, tied for 2nd in Western Conference

Been touting the talent on this crew for 4 straight weeks.  They can hang with anyone. They also have a defensive pressure that I think few others have in the League. Case in point, they held a team to 44 points on Sunday Night (in the same League where two teams went over 100 on that night — very, very impressive).  They are huge.  They have multiple match-ups all over the court at any given point and I think they are “built for the Playoffs” where I think the tempo of the games will slow down as teams will start to treasure possessions (much like in the NBA).  They might drop a few and think “how did that happen?” along the way but I think they will be a factor in who takes the Crown next April one way or another. Captain Danny “DGold” Goldin had 17 to lead the scorers for his crew on Sunday while Brandon “one of the nicest guys in the League” Lathon had 16 points and 15 boards!  OK, if he had 15 boards he couldn’t be THAT nice.. but still.. It’s seems like they have a “next man up” mentality and I think any week now, an extended winning streak could be started.  Maybe it already has begun…

6. Team Harmelech (iShot Mounts) – 2-2, 2nd in Eastern Conference

Been on the “one step back, one step forward” ride for 4 weeks now. This past week was time to a take the step forward.  Team Harmelech has had close to their full squad twice and in those games they are 2-0.  However, they also have had issues getting their whole squad week in and week out in the League’s opening month — something they need to fix.   Mike “PER” Maione had 16 points (on just 11 shots!) to along with 15 boards to help lead Team Harmelech on Sunday evening.  He also left a quote for his younger brother — Captain Anthony Maione and Co. — “We are the Bulls, we grind and it’s taking us a little time to get together.. They are the Heat and we are coming for them.”  (Didn’t have my tape recorder ready so that is not word for word).

7. Team Apuli (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 2-2, tied for 2nd in Western Conference

It’s just 1 game.  That’s how it has to be dealt with.  They caught Team Maione at Team Maione’s best — and Team Apuli didn’t have their A game to match.  Again, just one game and next week they get to play another one!  Dan “mountain of” Stone had 29 points and 11 rebounds on Sunday which is certainly a positive that can be taken out of Week 4.  I expect them to be heading back in the right direction by this time next week!

8. Team Bauer (Jam ‘n Honey) – 1-3, tied for 5th in Western Conference

The only 3-Loss team in the Power Rankings and for great reason — this squad really has enough to compete with each and every team in the field.  They have the League’s Leading Scorer — Jabarri “watch out for his pull-up 3!” Reynolds who is avg. 25.8 points per game as well as Evan “trying to learn to spell his last name” Zahniser who is also averaging over 20 points a game. Their supporting cast is quite feisty as well and on any given night these guys can beat the League’s best.  I also want to give a special shout-out to Mark “Congrats!” Weingarten who got married last week! All the best!

Rest of the Pack – Alphabetical Order

Team Eilian (Crystal Lake Jeep) – 1-3, tied for 4th in Eastern Conference

Haven’t been able to find their great form that they showed in Week 1.  Ben “fills it up” Eder had 23 points on Sunday Night and might help pack some punch that they need to start grabbing Ws again.

Team Holzman (Groupon) – 1-3, tied for 5th in Western Conference

Forget the final score last week — they had undefeated Team Kozin on their heels for the first half — so clearly the talent is there. They are still gelling and I think their true level of play will show in the second half of the regular season. Mike “MacLovin” Macleod led the way with 17 on this night.  I don’t even know how some of these guys were left standing at night’s end — Josh “Taco Meat” Cowin and Alex “aparmo” Parmacek ran the 15K Sunday Morning.  Hope your stretching.

Team Shamberg (Sunset Foods) – 0-4, in 6th in Eastern Conference

Just need to get one.. Then everything will be better. They play Team Harmelech next week — who have been up and down in the season’s first month — could be the perfect recipe.

Team Zimmerman (Teplitz & Bell) – 1-3, tied for 4th in Eastern Conference

Lost a hard fought battle with Team Schwartz — nothing to be ashamed of there.  These guys are better than their record and eventually that will show. Their early schedule has done them no favors.. Just looking at the Power Rankings from this week — they’ve already played 3 of the top 6 teams so far in 2013. That will even out.

Have a great weekend and see you Sunday Night.
