2013-14 Hoops – Week 6 (Nov. 17)

Updated: November 21, 2013

We are officially 1/3 of the way through the Regular Season!  So only (only) 12 weeks left before the Playoffs!  Here is a link to the extended Weekly Video Highlights which includes not just Week 6 but also Week 5 highlights as well!  Week 6 was the first full week of inter-conference play in All Sports Hoops.. We saw the Western Conference get the better of their Eastern foes, will that be a trend over the next month? We shall see.. Let’s get to the Power Rankings!

Power Rankings

1. Team Kozin (SLA Insurance) – 6-0, 1st in Western Conference

And then there was one… Everyone who had Team Kozin as the last Undefeated squad before the Season started raise your hand.  I can honestly say both hands of mine are still firmly planted on the keyboard, and I doubt that I’m alone..  While, I had little doubt these guys would band together and figure things out because of all the talent the team has, I just didn’t think it would be right out of the gate like this.  They have routinely won close games and their confidence in these situations are growingly rapidly.  Last week, it was Captain Jason “ice” Kozin who knocked down a buzzer beater for the W and this week it was a closely played 2nd half that could have gone either way but for the 6th time in as many weeks — these guys are standing in the Winner’s Circle.  They had a pair of double doubles out of the twin towers Josh Davis and Matt Wolk.  This team is just a load to handle down low and so quick on the perimeter.. Can they make it 7 in a row against former #1 Team Lalez next week??

2. Team Maione (B. Weinstein Associates) – 4-2, 2nd in Western Conference

Guess who’s back?  Back Again.. The Summer League Champs are back.. Tell a friend.  Team Maione who in many people’s eyes are the most talented team in the deep deep All Sports Hoops League — finally put together 40+ minutes of what we have all been waiting for.. They managed to pull away from previous #1 and Undefeated Team Lalez in the 2nd Half of their dynamic main event and mostly because they just hunkered down and did the little things right on Sunday Night.  These guys can shoot it out with and feel like they will beat anyone.. but they are the most lethal when they cherish the ball and make sure that each and every possession counts on both offense and defense.. Team Lalez brought that out of them on Sunday Night.   Do I think there could be a few more dips along the way during this treacherous Regular Season?  Yes.  Would I feel comfortable betting against them come April?  No.  I think there is a top tier forming and they are certainly in the thick of that.. Four Players were in double figures on Sunday including Brad “lee” Deutsch and Nick “copy/paste 1” Wieczorek who both went for 24 each, Chris “copy/paste 2” Wroblewski who netted 17 (could go for 30 every night if he wanted) and Michael “I have your shoes” Weisberg who had 15.  Tell a friend.

3. Team Lalez (Highland Pop) – 5-1, 1st in Eastern Conference

Gonna let you in on a bit of secret.. These guys are really really good.  I mean really really good.  Now that I just broke that news like Adam Schefter I can get back to the Power Rankings. So these guys got their first L this Season, not bad since it was Week 6 and all.  They were also a bit short handed — not that you’d hear any of them make an excuse — and still looked like they could take the game.  Again, no shame in dropping a game to Team Maione (or anyone for that matter) but especially to them.. There will be a Playoff game between these two squads in March or April (maybe more than one) and it’s going to be epic. These guys have another big game coming up as they will try to re-gift the present Team Maione gave them last week to Team Kozin — removing them from the Undefeated List.  Honestly can’t wait…

4. Team Harmelech (iShot Mounts) – 4-2, 2nd in Eastern Conference

[typing while taking cover]…  These guys have won 3 games in a row.. They have totally found their groove in November and yet they have fallen back a place in the Power Rankings.  How you ask?  Really just a factor of circumstance.. Team Kozin had to jump up to #1 as the lone Undefeated remaining, Team Maione just knocked off the other Undefeated, and I couldn’t drop Team Lalez anymore than I did with only one loss to Team Maione (and since they beat Team Harmelech back in Week 3).  So now you know the reasoning.. Anyways, these guys look as dangerous as they were supposed to look since week 1. Lots of that credit can be given to simply having most of their full squad their the past few weeks — which wasn’t the case in the first few weeks.  Zach “andy milanokis” Bulwa had a double double as did Michael “contractually obligated to bring him up here” Maione.. Adding to their offensive game was Adam “Air” Bernkopf who had 17 points on just 11 shots. EFFICIENCY!  These guys are the real deal and I’m happy to see their groove is back.

5. Team Bauer (Jam ‘n Honey) – 3-3, tied for 3rd in Western Conference

Team Bauer has rattled off two impressive Ws in a row now to pull back up to .500 on the Season.  You know what you are going to get from these guys each and every week — gritty defense, hustle plays all over the place, 25+ points from Jabarri “maybe the best scorer in the League” Reynolds and 15-20 points from Evan “one of the best 2nd options in the League” Zahniser…  The difference between Ws and Ls for these guys usually come down to a few missed/made jump shots between them and their opponents. They are going to be in every game and have played the Elite teams in the League very tough in the first third of the Regular Season.  They may never reach #1 in the Power Rankings (not saying they won’t — but schedule wise it may be tough to make up 2 or 3 losses for a while).. but this is a Team NO ONE will want to play come Playoff time.  No one.

6. Team Goldin (Sanders Court Pediatrics) – 3-3, tied for 3rd in Western Conference

Their sea-saw season continues.. Losses in the Odd Weeks (1,3 and 5) and Wins in the Even Weeks (2,4 and now 6)… Lucky for them this past week was an even numbered week. I’ve said it for weeks on end at this point — these guys are as talented as anyone in the League and they are literally a few possessions (and/or stops) away from being 5-1.  Last Week they lost a heartbreaker to the Undefeated Team Kozin on a buzzerbeater, yet they showed ZERO signs of a hangover from Week 5 on Sunday Night. They were dominating from the opening Tip and Garrett “the maniac” Staniec was a big reason why.. He put home 29 points on Sunday Night.  The guy is huge and if Team Goldin gets him going permanently he could be the key to their whole thing. They’ll try to get their first set of back to back Ws next Week vs. Team Shamberg.

7. Team Apuli (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 3-3, tied for 3rd in Western Conference

Big bounce back week for Team Apuli who now has wins on the Season over Teams Bauer, Goldin and Schwartz.. So could they be even higher this week? Ya sure.  Again, they are through with their achilles heel — Team Holzman for the rest of the year which is also good news for them.   Dan “3:16” Stone was NOT cold from the field — scoring 26 points and had 15 rebounds to boot. They have a date with Team Harmelech in Week 7 and that’s the bottom line…

8. Team Schwartz (Stems) – 3-3, 3rd in Eastern Conference

Well you aren’t #4 anymore.. Hoever this wasn’t the direction you wanted to move.. Team Schwartz had a tough battle and came up two points short w/ Team Apuli on Sunday evening.  These guys are as good as anyone when they are playing their best.. They have several shooters and can match most teams size for size.  Austin “all-around” Brown had 27 points (2nd highest of anyone in the League during Week 6) and 11 boards. Anthony “AB” Bernardi added 16 points of his own as well.  I’m not worried about this crew in the least.  They are and will be for the duration of the League — one of the hardest working Teams out there — on certain nights less jumpers fall than others. It happens.  They’ll be springing back up towards #4 in no time.

Rest of the Pack – Alphabetical Order

Team Eilian (Crystal Lake Jeep) – 1-5, 5th in Eastern Conference

Forget about the past weeks — gotta be about the future — tough road ahead next week with Team Maione, however they have shown they can really put the ball in the basket. They need to hunker down on D and get key stops at key times.  It’s going to get better soon.

Team Holzman (Groupon) – 2-4, 6th in Western Conference

They play like two different teams against Team Apuli and against the rest of the League… They’ll need to figure out how to treat everyone like Team Apuli and then they will be unstoppable. Josh “Taco Meat” Cowin had 12 points to lead the way on Sunday.

Team Shamberg (Sunset Foods) – 0-6, 6th in Eastern Conference

They were up at half by 4, but it was the same old story in the second half. They keep running out of gas as they only had 6 guys there on Sunday night.  They need to get their entire roster there for 44 minutes and they will come out with their first W.. They are improving though.

Team Zimmerman (Teplitz & Bell Attorneys) – 2-4, 4th in Eastern Conference

This group is more talented than their record might show right now.  I think that in the next 6 weeks you will see them start to rise up the Power Rankings.  Captain Jack has a really good core who possess enough size and speed to match anyone.. Just need to improve their shot selection a bit and they will be good to go.

That’s it for the Week 6 Power Rankings. See you Sunday.
