2013-14 Hoops – Week 7 (Nov. 24)

Updated: November 27, 2013

Week 7 saw the last Undefeated Team fall and a few Teams stop mini-losing streaks. Could be a big week when looking back.. It   was certainly a wacky (and depressing) weekend in Chicago sports — Sunday Night was a much needed break from all of that.. Here’s the Weekly Video Highlights for Week 7.  Let’s Rank ’em.

Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Highland Pop) – 6-1, 1st in Eastern Conference

Last week, Team Lalez felt as low as they had since the League started.. That was due to their first loss of the Season at the hands of Team Maione.  This week, they “re-gifted” that present to Team Kozin.. by knocking them down from the Undefeated mountain top. Something that Joe “the dream” Hakimian told me would happen in our pre-game interview.  Yes, I have exclusive rights to pre-game interviews..  I don’t think Team Lalez played their best game — which is the scary part in all of this — but they did enough to build a lead against Team Kozin and maintain it.  They were poised all night and when the time came they made their shots.  David “D.D.S” Gershenzon had another 20 point outing on Sunday Evening.. It was honestly their Defense that has them back on top of the Power Rankings as they held team Kozin to 16 points less than their season average.  The tough stretch of their schedule will not let up any as next week they have Team Apuli.

2. Team Maione (B. Weinstein Associates) – 5-2, 2nd in Western Conference

Seriously debated for several minutes whether to have them in the #1 Spot this Week.. Ended up going with Team Lalez as they have less losses and are coming off the Win vs. the last undefeated team — even though Team Maione defeated Team Lalez last week.  So Team Maione, what I’m saying is, I understand if you are like “WHAT>!!>???”  Again, put it on the chalkboard as more motivation. Anyways, these guys are really rolling right now.  Sunday night they might have looked more complete than at any other time this Season.  Captain Anthony “twan” Maione shimmied his way to a 17 point night.  Next week they will have their hands full with the physical Team Schwartz squad.  Going to be a fun one.

3. Team Kozin (SLA Insurance) – 6-1, 1st in Western Conference

Let’s just rip this off like a bandaid — they lost.  No one was going to go Undefeated in this League.. Too many good teams, too much talent and no amount of good fortune could help that many weeks in a row.  However, they lost a close game to another 1-Loss Team, a Team that has championships in its past All Sports Series Leagues.  There is ZERO to ashamed of in that.. Not that a loss to any other team would cause any either.. They won their first 6 games and  they can win their next 6.  They played far from their best game on Sunday Night and really could have still won. These two teams will lock up again on January 19.  Mark your calendars for that Rematch.

4. Team Apuli (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 4-3, tied for 3rd in Western Conference

After Week 5 Team Apuli was at a low point.. Just two weeks later they now have sprung up to the #4 spot after consecutive wins over Team Schwartz and Team Harmelech.  These guys are just so big down low.. They really create matchup problems everywhere and when they have their full cast of characters they are really tough to beat.  Dan “the mountain” Stone has been a force all season long posting another double-double on Sunday Night, however, it was their other big man who stole the show in Week 7.  Kyle “WOW” Daniels posted a 33 point (w/ only 20 shots) night to go along with 20 Rebounds! 33 and 20! Are you kidding me?? Kyle and Dan have really learned to play off one another down low and with the shooters they have on the outside.. Well these guys can and have play with anyone. Take away the two losses to their vice aka Team Holzman and these guys are 4-1 on the year.  A big game with Team Lalez looms next week.

5. Team Goldin (Sanders Court Pediatrics) – 4-3, tied for 3rd in Western Conference

Two mins in a row for the first time all year.. To reiterate, this is one of the most talented groups out there. When they play together  they are a tough group to take down.. Especially when Garrett “the man in the middle” Staniec has 27 points and 21 Rebounds as he did in week 7!  People were making moves on the block on Sunday Night.  Captain Danny “DG” Goldin is an All Sports vet and he seems to be getting the right people in the right places as we head into December.  These guys are going nowhere but up.

6. Team Schwartz (Stems) – 4-3, tied for 2nd in Eastern Conference

This really proved to be a week where many teams got back on the right track – Team Schwartz was on a bit of a losing skid but managed to turn it around on Sunday Night against Team Holzman.  Jason “I can hear Coach Mac calling out the name now” Vismantas had 31 points on the night — enough to be the 2nd highest of the week — and enough to help his team get the much needed W.  As the League progresses, many teams are going to find their strengths (if they haven’t done so yet), however, none will have what these guys have in TWTW (that’s the will to win) department.  These guys play every possession like it’s their last and I think in the Playoffs that is something people don’t want to play.

7. Team Harmelech (iShot) – 4-3, tied for 2nd in Eastern Conference

Their winning streak has come to an end however, they are still in a great spot.  They were outsized down low in this one and the energy they were using on defense sucked the life out of their legs when it came to jumpers on O.  These guys like to get out and run as everyone on the team can handle the rock, but on Sunday Night they weren’t able to up the tempo as much as they’d like because they needed so much extra interior help at the rim.  Basketball is about matchups and Team Apuli is just a rough one for Team Harmelech.. These guys cross paths again in a few weeks and when that happens Team Harmelech will need to knock down some three balls and get the bigs from Team Apuli away from the basket on both ends of the floor.. They have what it takes and the ability to make it happen.  Again, they are still in a great spot going into Week 8.

8. Team Zimmerman (Teplitz & Bell Attorneys) – 3-4, 4th in Eastern Conference

Quickly and quietly Team Zimmerman are finding their grove and have won 3 of their last 5.  Captain Jack “not Stephen” Zimmerman;s bunch can do really do it all and the more they play together the better they are looking.  Eugene “outside” and Max “inside” Boton are as good of a one/two scoring punch as you can ask for.  These guys have many more Wins in them and I think people will start to recognize what they have going on before too long. I know I have.  Keep up the good more guys and welcome to back to the Rankings.

Rest of the Pack – Alphabetical Order

Team Bauer (Jam ‘n Honey) – 3-4, 5th in Western Conference

Any team that is missing their top 2 scorers, who also handle the ball most of the game and are two of the bigger defenders on the team.. Well it’s not going to go that well.. They played hard and were in the game for quite some time but they just couldn’t make up for their shallow bench. Ian “one of the best 3 balls in the League” Shaffer took over the scoring reigns however with 17 points. This game realistically is not an indication of who they are or where they are going.  No big deal.

Team Eilian (Crystal Lake Jeep) – 1-6, 5th in Eastern Conference

They are in a bit of a drought here.  When they get to the gym it doesn’t seem like its weighing on them though. They are going to get on a roll at one point. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.

Team Holzman (Groupon) – 2-5, 6th in Western Conference & Team Shamberg (Sunset Foods) – 0-7, 6th in Eastern Conference

Worked out well that these two squads were alphabetically next to each other so we can address both here in a succinct way — Team Holzman has two wins this year, both against Team Apuli, and Team Shamberg is winless; one of those trends ends on Sunday Night as these two will do battle. Good Luck!

Everyone please have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your friends and families. See ya on Sunday Night.
