2013 Champaign – Week 3 Volleyball Tourney (Oct. 2)

Updated: October 4, 2013

The Volleyball Tourney is always one of the best week’s of the Regular Season.. You get to see how several of the teams matchup against each other, even if just briefly, and when else do you get to see such talented Volleyball action?  Before we break down the week that was and look forward to Week 4 here is a link to the Weekly Video Highlights!

Once again, the Power Rankings will look a little different this week since there were so many games and no true Stats to report on. There will be a run down of the Knockout Rounds of the Volleyball Tourney then a Top-7 Power Rankings will be revealed at the bottom and that will be it.  Our normal format will return next week.  Here are the official point totals team received during the Volleyball Tourney:

1st – Team Rafferty -Sig Ep (Cookie Jar) – 31 pts – (3 pts from advancing as a Wild Card  + 3 Final4 points + 25 1st place points)
2nd – Team Fisher – AEPi (popchips) – 20 pts – (7 pts from winning pool + 3 Final4 points + 10 2nd place points)
t-3rd – Team Lehrman – ZBT (Stanley Steemer) – 10 pts – (7 pts from winning pool + 3 Final4 points)
t-3rd – Team Gross – ATO SR (Hollywood Liquors) – 10 pts – (7 pts from winning pool + 3 Final4 points)

Volleyball Tourney – Knockout Round Recap (Single Elimination All games were up to 21, win by 2, cap at 25).

6 Teams Remain

3. Team Fisher – AEPi (popchips) v. 6. Team Witt – ZBT (Houlihan’s)

4. Team Young – AKL (Starr Limo) v. 5. Team Rafferty Sig Ep (Cookie Jar)

Note: 1. Team Lehrman – ZBT (Stanley Steemer) and 2. Team Gross – ATO SR (Hollywood Liquors) received byes to the Final4.

Pool Play started with a 12-Team field and that was whittled down to just 6 after the Pool Play Round.  There was incredible talent on display this past Wednesday Night and I don’t mean just the teams that advanced… Several teams who ended their night earlier than desired were still really, really good…  However, I think the best 6 Teams did manage to advance to the single elimination Knockout Rounds and that setup some fantastic matchups during the conclusion of the night..

The highlight of the quarterfinal round was certainly the Team Fisher – AEPi and Team Witt – ZBT SR game.  These two teams traded the lead back and forth throughout the contest.  No team could get a lead of more than a couple points.. Finally we ended up with a 21-20 lead and Team Fisher serving for Game Point and a spot in the Final 4.  The rally was intense and when the ball finally struck the ground it was Team Fisher and the AEPi crew going through to their second Final4 in as many weeks.  For Team Witt — it was a heartbreaking end to a really exciting night.. They are officially on the board now and will use this momentum going forward to start springing up the Standings and Power Rankings.

In the other quarterfinal game Team Young – AKL , who was the lowest ranked Pool Winner took on Team Rafferty – Sig Ep who actually had a better record than Team Young, but advanced as a Wild Card team due to a tough Pool.  Team Rafferty got up early and never looked back.. As the night moved on it seemed although they lost an early Pool Play game, Team Rafferty looked as if they were THE team to beat..  Man could those guys leap… On to the Final4 we go..

1. Team Lehrman – ZBT (Stanley Steemer) v. 5. Team Rafferty – Sig Ep (Cookie Jar)

2. Team Gross – ATO SR (Hollywood Liquors) v. 3. Team Fisher -AEPi (popchips)

Surprisingly the Final4 saw two “upsets” as the teams that finished at the head of the pack and received byes into the Final4 were quickly bounced.. Team Lehrman and Team Gross advanced with the top records (and point differentials) in pool play but just couldn’t keep up with Team Rafferty and Team Fisher at this point of the night.  Both of the teams heading to the Championship were really clicking at this point and everyone knew we were in store for quite the battle.  As for Team Lehrman and Team Gross.. Each team grabbed 10 big points in the Standings on a night where most of the League’s Teams earned much less than that.  Team Gross seemingly can do anything/everything and even though they might not wind up with one of the Top Seeds come Playoff time they might just be my pick to click.

3. Team Fisher -AEPi (popchips) v. 5. Team Rafferty – Sig Ep (Cookie Jar)

So as we got down to 2, I think most people felt that Team Rafferty – Sig Ep were actually the odds on favorite, despite being the #5 seed coming into the Knockout Rounds. They had a brief hiccup in Pool Play which cost them the #1 Seed and a few more points.. That hiccup came at the hands of Team Fisher — who they split their Pool Play games with.  Each team finished 3-1 and Team Fisher won the group based on point differential.  So obviously, Team Fisher was not intimidated as they actually jumped out to an early lead.. Team Rafferty battled back and tied it up at 14.  They then slipped ahead but neither team after that point would get ahead by more than a point or two.  The score was eventually 19-17 Team Rafferty, then 19-18.  Team Rafferty would earn the next point after a dazzling spike to get to Tourney Point.  Team Fisher broke their serve however and got the ball back trailing 20-19.  As the ball went back and forth over the net both teams knew what was at stake.. 15 Huge Points in the Standings but also the right to be come the 2013 Champaign League VBall Champs…  The ball struck the court and Team Rafferty celebrated as they had wrapped up the intense Championship Game 21-19.   Team Fisher finished second for the second consecutive tournament for the second consecutive week.  While that may sting just a bit.. There is a silver lining.. They are now atop the Standings through Week 3 — a place where everyone would like to be.  For Team Rafferty — wow.  Just awesome to watch.  These guys were flying around all night. So entertaining. Congrats again guys.

Power Rankings

1. Team Fisher -AEPi (popchips) – Currently 1st in the Standings w/ 55 points. – While they weren’t the Final Team left Standing on Wednesday Night.. They are now atop the Standings and I think have been the most impressive Squad factoring in all 3 weeks.

2. Team Rafferty – Sig Ep (Cookie Jar) – Currently in 3rd in the Standings w/ 49 points.  – Did I think about putting them at #1? Yeah. Could they be at #1? Yeah… Can they prove they earned #1 next week?  Yeah.

3. Team Harris (No. 7 Salon & Spa) – Currently in 2nd in the Standings w/ 50 points.  – Can’t win them all. They didn’t advance to the Knockout Rounds but would have been the 7th team in had that many advanced.. Can’t drop them too far.. Been too impressive.

4. Team Gross – ATO SR (Hollywood Liquors) – Currently in 4th in the Standings w/ 32 points. – Getting points every week is a good trend.

5. Team Young – AKL (Starr Limo) – Currently in 5th in the Standings w/ 22 points. – Next week back to the Hoops Court where they seemed very comfortable in Week 1.

6. Team Lehrman – ZBT (Stanley Steemers) – Currently tied for 7th in the Standings w/ 10 points.  – Welcome to the Power Rankings. Wish you all the best and a long stay!
