2013 Chicago Men’s – Week 1 Hoops/Floor Hockey (June 17)

Updated: June 21, 2013

Welcome to the weekly Chicago Men’s blog Wrap-Up!  Each week the games will be recapped right here. Many of you are first time Participants and thus first time readers.. Just to sort of preface the wrap-up — 1) I write about all of the games using a statistical review; I do not see nearly enough of the games to have a decent opinion as to what is going on..  2) The Wrap-Up uses a “Power Rankings” type review as opposed to the individual game wrap-ups.

You also can count on a link to the weekly Video Highlights right here each week!

Alright hopefully you are still with me.. Week 1 is in the books and here are the Power Rankings!

1. Team Hakimian (Crescent Movers) – Currently tied for 4th in the Standings with 15 points.

Allow me to re-introduce the Reigning and Defending Champions aka “The Dynasty” aka Team Hakimian!  For the All Sports Series Rookies this will be a little history lesson and for the Vets well it can never hurt to reset the stage for you.. Team Hakimiam (formerly known as Team Dorfman) won the first ever All Sports Series in 2010.  They followed up that up with a 2nd place in 2011 (their only ever playoff defeat) and then in 2012 became the only 2 time Champion of All Sports Series.   The question heading into 2013 is will we see the first ever Back to Back Championships in All Sports Series history? We’ll find out in 8 weeks.. Anyways, While they are not tied for first going into week 2 (hockey is worth more points than hoops) — I believe that the Defending Champs get to keep the #1 spot until someone knocks them off of it. Co-Captains Joe “the Dream” Hakimian and Benny “the Jet” Lalez had their guys pick up right where they left off last year winning their first Hoops game against the Rookie Team Zimmerman (Crystal Lake Jeep) by 17.  The score sounds makes it sound like a blow out but for Team Zimmerman’s first game, I think they proved they are here to play with the big boys.. Brennan “Huff” Keller led Team Hakimian with 14 points on the night.  These guys have Team Saltzberg (Wrigley View Rooftop) in Hoops in Week 2.

2. Team Bulwa (Bull and Bear) – Currently tied for 1st in the Standings with 20 points.

The 2o12 Runners-Up started 2013 with a big come from behind Floor Hockey win against Team Riskin (Jam ‘n Honey) on Monday Night.  Captain Zach “julie the cat gaffney” Bulwa kept his team in it with at least 4 or 5 saves on the night.  He could be heard screaming “AAAANNNNDDDDD A SAVVEEEEEE BY BuLWAAAAA” after each one. Classy Zach.   This squad will be at the top or at least near the top all season long.  They are deep and are capable of winning each sport any time they line-up.  Sam “Gagner” Dorf put the biscuit in the basket 4 times on Monday Night to lead his team to victory.. These guys have a date with one of their Rivals — Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) on the Hoops court Monday Night..

3. Team Watts (Giordano’s Pizza) – Currently tied for 1st in the Standings with 20 points.

There are a few squads that have gotten to or near the promised land each year but have not been able to call themselves Champions.  Team Watts is might have the unenviable tag of “most talented team” to never win the Crown.  However, this really might be the year.  They’ve had the talent for years to take the whole thing, it just always seems to be something little that derails them.  Captain Jake “working the phones” Watts is as aggressive of a GM as All Sports Series has ever seen and I think this version of Team Watts could be the perfect configuration.  Back for another season is Bobby “perennial MVP candidate” Dobry who had 1 goal as well as Eric “double hat trick” Izzo who had  a cool 6-pack of goals and finally Matthew “Patrick” Sharp who scored 4 times on the night.  Captain Watts also added Deerfield running-mate Ben “who knew he could play hockey” Hewitt who had 2 goals.  Their win was good enough to be labeled the @theMacMentor Genius Team of the Week.  This squad is loaded and next week they will get to show off their Hoops skills against Team Cohen (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

4. Team Sterk (Atomic Transport) – Currently tied for 1st in the Standings with 20 points.

In most cases Rookie teams to All Sports Series struggle in their debuts.. It’s usually the first time the group of people have played together especially in that type of environment. Team Sterk (and later Team Hadelman) proved that some Rorokie squads need no-time at all to get acclimated with the League.  All Team Sterk did on opening night was win by 8 goals and well look absolutely dominant.  Mike “@sterkwood” Sterk has put together a team with size, talent, speed.. They also have Wayne Gretzky on their team, which is nice!  Matt “Single Double” Piegza scored not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7, not 8, not 9, BUT 10 GOALS on Monday Night.  That is 10 more than the Blackhawks scored.  10 Goals.  If anyone is curious — yes that is an all time record and I assume it will live on for quite some time (at least a year until Mr. Single Double laces up again).  Congrats to you sir.  Next week this crew will go toe to toe with Team Apuli (Factor75.com) on the Hoops court.

5. Team Hadelman (Carriage Hill Kennels) – Currently tied for 4th in the standings with 15 points.

Scroll just above to Team Sterk — I basically could write the exact same paragraph for Team Hadelman as I did for Team Sterk.  With a few minor changes — Team Hadelman didn’t have a guy score 10 goals in Hockey — granted that would be tough since they were playing basketball.  They did have a guy, Danny “@DannyGoldin” Goldin, go for 15 points though — less impressive than 10 goals yes, but still impressive.  Also, instead of being a straight up Rookie squad like Team Sterk — they do have some pieces who have played in All Sports Series before such as Sean “we’ll get to his relationship with Team Kornblatt at some point” Wallis and Dan “double dipping in he Burbs League as well” Abramson.  Captain Spencer “@RvrNrthRomantic” Hadelman basically has put together an army.  They are extremely athletic. They are fast. They can hit jump shots with ease as well.  I’m not sure if Hoops is their best sport because I have not seen them play anything else just yet but the rest of the League better hope it is or Team Hadelman could be holding the Crown in August..  Next up for these guys is a Floor Hockey game with 2011 Champions Team Merar (Sandusky Cabinets).

6. Team Cohen (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 4th in the standings with 15 points.

Time and time again Captain Andy “@TeamCohen2” Cohen’s squad is viewed as the underdog and time and time again they get Ws.  This team may not strike fear in their opponents but if you go back and look at their win/loss record through the years in All Sports Series, their opponents would stop taking them lightly.  Last year they were the #2 overall seed entering the Playoffs and if not for some bad luck in terms of match-ups they could have taken the whole thing.  Monday night epitomized their existence in All Sports Series — they never gave up — and pulled out a close hard fought victory with Rival Team Glass (Michael’s Event Catering).  Glass’ squad jumped out to an early lead and most teams would have packed it in and started thinking about Week 2 — but not Team Cohen. Newcomer Kyle “your name sounds like an NFL TE” Daniels put in 14 points on Monday night and the Cohners need every last one of them to squeak out their win.  I’ll be surprised if this team is NOT near the top of the Standings come season’s end. Maybe I’m the only one that notices, but that really should change… Perfect opportunity to put the League on notice next week when they play #3 Team Watts in Hoops.  Oh and one more thing Dr. Jacobs has Sponsored the Championship Team in two different Leagues over the past 2 summers. Just FYI.

7. Team Merar (Sandusky Cabinets) – Currently tied for 4th in the standings with 15 points.

As stated above, Captain Michael “merfapalooza” Merar and company entered last season as Defending Champs.  They made an improbable run in 2011 as the #6 seed and took the whole thing!  They are what you would call, “the elder statesmen” of the Chicago League — but they have been infused with some new blood.   They are always tough to deal with on the Hoops court, but this Monday they got a win they are especially proud of because 2 of their leading Hoopers — Brian and Bradley Deutsch were absent.  Just before the season Brian suffered a brutal ankle injury that will seemingly keep him out of All Sports Series in 2013.  This will definitely be hard for Team Merar to overcome, however if anyone can, it’s these guys.  Danny “thunder” Roseth picked up the slack tallying 14 points in their Week 1 win vs. Team Apuli.  Next week they draw the impressive Team Hadelman bunch in Floor Hockey.

8. Team Radist (Greater Than) – Currently tied for 4th in the standings with 15 points.

There is one Award that I can already pass out no matter how the rest of the season plays out — Captain Eric “Welcome Back!” Radist is the 2013 Comeback Player of the Year.  For those who don’t remember or were not playing in 2012, let me refresh your memory on 2012 Week 1 Hoops — Team Radist was winning their Hoops game when Captain Eric jumped up for a board landed on someone’s foot and tore his ACL.  He’s battled all off-season long and made his comeback on Monday Night.  There was literally no one I was happier to see out there than Eric.. Oh and Alex “I don’t know how someone does this” Rubin put up 42 (FORTY TWO) POINTS on Monday Night!!  This is the second person in any All Sports League this Summer to go for 42. It’s incredible. The kid was en Fuego.  He also was quick to point out that Piegza’s 10 Floor Hockey Goals was may more impressive (during a twitter convo w/ @allsportsseries on Monday Night)..  Good all around guy for sure and he obviously can shoot the rock.  Team Radist is finally off to that fast start they have coveted the past couple of years.. Did I mention they look good in those Baby Blue Greater Than Jerseys?  It’s fitting that Greater Than is sponsoring the Team of the Player receiving the 1st Greater Than Performance of the Week — Alex Rubin and his cool 42.  I’m curious to see if these guys can make it two in a row against Team Glass in Week 2 Floor Hockey.

9. Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 4th in the standings with 15 points.

Anyone who would want to cry nepotism in terms of the Rankings… I’d like to present you Exhibit A (B and C to come later)..  The Camp Ojibwa squad is an #Original12 team who has experienced both the peaks and valleys which All Sports Series can offer.  It seems each year these Braves are on the verge of that 1 magical run but they end up concluding with a screeching halt. Team Captain Matthew “SlickCyrus” Kornblatt made a few roster moves this off-season as he so often does… He has added hockey purist Alex “evgeni” Fruend and the team lost Sean “1 and done” Wallis to Team Hadelman..  Team Kornblatt seemed to exercise a mini-deamon on Monday Night via a Hoops victory — which has certainly been their weak point over the years.  What no on can deny is this team has size and heart.. Several big bodies helped secure the W in this one.. Phil “the animal” Weisberg led his team with 14 points on the night and Adam “A-Gilly” Gilbert, Todd “TG” Goldner, and Chris “if not for Eric Radist, would certainly be mentioned in Comeback Player of the Year” Chez all chipped in on the glass and in the paint.  To say that it was shear size which got this W for them would be failing to mention the fantastic perimeter D this team has with Captain Korny and Derek “scrappy” Reinglass.  I will leave you with this.. The story is always the same for these guys — If you let them get past the Hoops Round of the Playoffs they are my pick to win the whole thing.  So is this year they get over the hump? Time will tell.

10. Team Maione (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 10th in the Standings with 0 points.

There was place for one team in the Rankings who did not get a W in Week 1. I think that Team Maione deserves that spot for this Week..  For those unfamiliar with this New (to the Chicago League) squad they are actually an #Original12 team who have experienced significant success up North in the Burbs League.  Captain Anthony “my second favorite” Maione has assembled a team with championship experience and fantastic athletic ability.  They played their first Floor Hockey game ever in All Sports Series on Monday Night and let’s be honest here — they got spanked.. What is an issue for the rest of the League however, Floor Hockey is now gone from their schedule and I can’t really tell you which sport is their strong suit, because it’s really ALL of them.  Josh “Big Bird” Berman did add a hat trick to his team’s tally on Monday Night.  Berman by the way may be the most underrated player in the Chicago Men’s League — keep an eye on him as the season progresses.  In Week 2 these guys have Hoops and I fully expect them to begin their ascent up the Standings then..

Rest of the Pack – Alphabetical Order – All tied in the Standings for 10th with 0 points.

Team Apuli (Factor75.com) – Captain Justin “double duty” Apuli is back with his crew for their second season in All Sports Series. In 2012 they made it all the way to the Final 4 and they were oh so close to getting to that Championship game.  These guys didn’t start the season the way they wanted in their first Hoops game but they have plenty of time to get back on the right track.. And They will.  Captain JA had 18 points on the night and was really impressive even in the loss.

Team Daar (PoPchips) – Not bad for their first All Sports Series contest as a group. Captain Steve “@RiseSteve” Daar has assembled a talented bunch who just happened to run in to Alex “Mr. 42” Rubin and the rest of the inspired Team Radist (Greater Than).  This squad is going to be just fine as the season progresses.

Team Glass (Michael’s Event Catering) – This team is entering their 3rd All Sports Series campaign and while they suffered a minor setback by the way of giving up a lead to Rival Team Cohen (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.).. Captain Adam “MIA” Glass couldn’t be there on Monday Night and I think his leadership could have been enough to help Team Glass preserve the win it looked like they had earlier in the night.  Sam “nice first night” Martinez had 16 in the game.  Looking past Week 1, I fully expect this crew to have a say in the end of All Sports Series 2013 much like they did in the Summer of 2011 as a Final 4 squad.

Team Greenberg (Teplitz & Bell) – Exhibit B of the anti-Neptosim Rankings.. For those unaware — I actually live with people who are on Team Greenberg’s roster!  Full Disclosure there you go folks!  Captain Elliot “Braeside’s Finest” Greenberg has made a few off-season splashes with the likes of Tim “11 points on Monday Night” Wang and 2 guys who have yet to make their debut.. The Tag Team from George St. aka The Doctor and The Muscle aka the Cooks aka Danny “loves John Cena” Mason and Sam “Dr. Isaac Yankem” Weinberg.. These guys were sorely missed on Monday Night.  This was a Playoff squad a year ago and I see no reason why they won’t be right back in the mix.

Team Horwitz (SLA Insurance) – Exhibit C of the anti-Nepotism Rankings.. Ok so Captain Jon “the Wiz” Horwitz and crew might have been a little over-matched in Week 1.. Team Hadelman just had too much size and as the game went on it was just too much to overcome..  That being said, this crew can play with anyone in the League in any sport.  Captain Wiz did add 18 (and is among the League Leaders in PPG currently) and Joe “josephene” Karmin chipped in 12.  I will refer back to this initial Wrap-up as proof down the road — This team will upset one or two teams this Regular Season. Fact.

Team Riskin (Jam ‘n Honey) – What would All Sports Series be with out a pinch of controversy?  Captain Matt “the Hulk” Riskin’s crew had a lead through much of their Floor Hockey game with #2 Team Bulwa (Bull and Bear).. There was a “goal” toward the end of the second period that ended up being disallowed for the Jam ‘n Honey bunch which ended up being the difference as they dropped the game by just one goal.. A truly heartbreaking way to start the season.  In one of the more impressive debuts in All Sports Series history Nick “Khabibulin” Buha put in 5 goals for his squad. Wow.  These guys face Team Horwitz (SLA Insurance) on the Hoops court for Week 2.

Team Saltzberg (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Back for another Summer is Captain Sean “sweet &” Saltzberg and crew.   These guys just drew the short end of the stick on Monday Night (literally).  Facing off with the Hockey POWER that is Team Sterk is just unlucky scheduling.  Bryant “scored more goals than Kobe would have” Donnowitz netted 2 goals on Monday Night in the Loss.  These guys will feel much more at home on the Hoops court next week — the only issue, more unlucky scheduling with #1 Team Hakimian.

Team Zimmerman (Crystal Lake Jeep) — The final Rookie squad in All Sports Series is Captained by Jack “attack” Zimmerman.  I get that aren’t a ton of moral victories in All Sports Series. Each week is important and each point in the Standings is too.  However, going against the Dynasty – Team Hakimian in your first week is an extremely tall order.. For most of the game Team Zimmerman was right there!  They just couldn’t close the gap and the game got away a bit at the end.. Captain Jack added 17 points for his squad.. Next week, they will face-off with Team Greenberg on the Floor Hockey court.  Should be a fun one as both teams look to get their first Ws.

That is it for the Week 1 blog wrap-up.  If you have any comments, questions, ideas or concerns just give a holler.

Thanks for reading, have a great weekend and see you Monday Night.
