2013 Chicago Men’s Week 4 – Flag Football, Floor Hockey & 16″ (July 8)

Updated: July 11, 2013

We have just crossed the half way point of the Regular Season — Welcome to the weekly blog Wrap-Up!  Here is a link to the Weekly Video Highlights!  Week 4 provided for some great finishes big jumps/slides with the Standings.. This was a rare week where both #1 and #2 coming into the week both lost.. Who will gain the #1 spot? Let’s get to the Power Rankings!

Power Rankings

1. Team Watts (Giordano’s Pizza) – Currently tied for 3rd in the Standings with 60 points.

Team Watts has been near the top of the Rankings seemingly since they entered All Sports Series in 2011.  I’m not sure if it’s because not all of the guys on the team are known to the majority of the League or what — but they are one of if not THE team to beat — and its time everyone takes notice.  Captain Jake “wheelin and dealin” Watts has assembled a group that can play anyone in anything.  This past week they got another W and jumped up to 3rd in the Standings.  With teams #1 and #2 falling in Week 4, no one deserves the top spot more than these guys.  Bobby “QB1” Dobry tied for the league lead with 4 TD passes on Monday night and showed why I highlighted him in Week 1 of the Wrap-Up.  These guys have a Hoops double-header next week (make up from Hawks game included) and have a chance to grab the top spot in the Standings with 2 victories.

2. Team Glass (Michael’s Event Catering) – Currently tied for 1st in the Standings with 65 points.

Welcome, welcome, welcome back — It’s official Team Glass is back!  They were a dominating force in 2011 (Final 4 squad).. In 2012 they hit a few rough patches and never quite regained form but I can tell you right now, these guys are back and seemingly better than ever.  They got a huge come from behind victory in 16″ Softball on Monday night after trailing by a couple of runs going into their final at-bats.  Captain Clutch Adam Glass had the go-ahead hit to give his team the W.  These guys are now in a tie for first in the Standings but have more points still available than Team Hadelman (Carriage Hill Kennels).  I’m excited to see if they can hold on to 1st heading into the Playoffs.

3. Team Maione (Sunset Foods) – Currently in 6th in the Standings with 55 points.

Back in Week 1’s Wrap-Up I put Team Maione in the Power Rankings as the only team who didn’t get a Week 1 W.  I have to thank them for proving me right (I have to show that I’m right a little, since I am definitely wrong all the time).. These guys have had significant success in the All Sports Series Suburbs Leagues throughout the years and they are settling in very nicely in the Chicago League this Summer.  Some people might question me on their #3 Ranking because of their spot in the Standings right now.. Just trust me they’ll prove me right again — not to mention if you knock off the previous week’s #1 Team you deserve an extra bump.  Josh “I have to keep putting him in because he deserves it!” Berman had 4 TD passes on Monday night — Chris “copy/paste” Wroblewski and Jordan “suns out…” Multack each hauled in 2 TD catches on the night as well.  It wouldn’t surprise me one bit to hand them the Championship crown at the end of the Summer.

4. Team Riskin (Jam ‘n Honey) – Currently tied for 3rd in the Standings with 60 points.

This is the highest Team Riskin has been ranked in the Power Rankings (including Team Feldgreber in 2012 here as well).. And frankly they might deserve to be even higher.  I want to remind everyone too if not for a couple minutes in Floor Hockey — these guys would be undefeated and in sole ownership of the #1 spot in the Standings (and the Power Rankings).  Either way all these guys have done since that Week 1 hiccup is rattle off 3 wins and have looked great in doing so.  These guys on Monday Night took down Team Merar who won a Championship in 2011 backed by their strong 16″ club.  Extremely impressive stuff.  Matt “had 3 RBIs” Toth helped out Captain Matt “the Hulk” Riskin who got a hit in all of his at-bats on Monday Night.  These guys have great momentum right now and the sky is the limit.

5. Team Bulwa (Bull and Bear) – Currently tied for 3rd in the Standings with 60 points.

I think Team Bulwa had the best win of any team on Monday Night.  That speaks to what I feel about Team Sterk (Atomic Transport) as well.  These guys pulled out a 20-18 flag football victory which catapulted them into a tie for 3rd in the Standings.  The teams traded momentum back and forth on Monday Night and the whole game came down to one play.  Team Sterk drove the field on Team Bulwa down 8.  With about 20 seconds left in the game Team Sterk scored a miraculous TD which set up “the Play.”  New to All Sports Series this season is the 3pt conversion which can be attempted from 15 yards out.  Team Sterk decided to go for 3 and the win instead of the 2 pt (and tie).  The ball was thrown into the endzone and it was batted down — Team Bulwa held the line and took the game!  Michael “can really throw on the run” Glink tossed 3 TD passes to help lead his team to victory!  These guys want it so bad — makes it fun to watch.

6. Team Hadelman (Carriage Hill Kennels) – Currently tied for 1st in the Standings with 65 points.

The Chicago Men’s League is as deep as it has ever been (or as deep as any All Sports Series League ever) and a large part of that depth is the Rookie Team Hadelman.  Last week they were ranked #1 for great reason.  This week they took a L to the fantastic Team Maione (Sunset Foods) which is nothing to hang your heads about.  With that aforementioned depth, means far falls in the Rankings after Losses.  That being said Team Hadelman is still tied for 1st in the Standings — where the #s really matter.   What’s scary for the rest of the League — these guys are just experiencing their first games together with All Sports Series — so taking that into account.. These guys are going to be even scarier come playoff time.

7. Team Horwitz (Stuart Levin & Associates Insurance) – Currently in 7th in the Standings with 45 points.

BREAKING NEWS: Team Horwitz is full of CANADIANS! Not Really — but man could they play Floor Hockey!  Graham “G-Unit” Conatser scored 5 Goals on Monday Night (after he was seen doing a spin-a-rooni and chanting “5 time, 5 time, 5 time, 5 time, 5 time”..  Captain Jon “Charlie Conway” Horwitz added a hat trick of is own to get in on the party.  Did I mention these guys won 15-2 in Floor Hockey?? Did I mention they played Defending Champs aka the Dynasty aka Team Hakimian!?  Simply incredible.  Well done sirs.

8. Team Cohen (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 10th in the Standings with 35 points.

Knock down 7 times, get up 8.  Or something like that?  Wade probably flopped on a few of those..  Anyways, @TeamCohen2 just won’t quit.. Just when people thought they might be in for a slide in 2013 they pull out a nail-biting 7-6 Floor Hockey win against Rival Team Daar (PoPchips).  Adam “Banks” Harris put home 4 goals and Jake “could have beaten Ryan” Miller added 2 goals during the game.  These guys are right in the thick of the Playoff race and with a couple more wins will find themselves in the familiar spot of having a high seed.

9. Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 10th in the Standings with 35 points.

Revenge is a dish best served cold.  These guys got to play familiar foes Team Apuli (Factor75.com) in Floor Hockey on Monday Night.  Yes that Team Apuli – who has former Team Kornblatt member Jono Matasar.  Before the Season started this was one of the games I circled as a must-see game.  NBC Sunday Night Football would have flexed this matchup to air it in prime time if you know what I mean.  Anyways, the game didn’t disappoint.  The teams traded goals throughout the game.  With about a minute to go Team Kornblatt was leading by a goal behind the fantastic play of Matt “between the pipes” Emer and the offense of Alex “still got it!” Freund.  The lead evaporated with one sick spin/top shelf combo shot that wound up in the back of the net by Jason “welcome back” Shape.  So would Floor Hockey go to OT?  Not this week!  With just seconds to go Alex Freund decided his team was winning on this night.. He got possession of the puck and fired a shot on goal which was blocked but followed with a backhand rebound that lit the lamp.  The warriors from Camp Ojibwa had begun to sprint to the lake only to realize how exhausted they were from their hard-fought contest.  As is always the story with these guys — peaks and valleys — This win felt different however and might be the extra push of momentum they need to carry them into the Playoffs.

t-10 Team Apuli (Factor75.com) & Team Hakimian (Crescent Movers) – Currently tied for 8th in the Standings with 40 points.

It is very rare you will see two teams that were in the 4 of the previous week’s rankings drop so significantly in one given week — most of the other Ranked teams got wins though and, thus, leapfrogged these two mainstays.  Neither team has anything to worry about as they are both firmly in the Playoff race with tons of games to go. Another commonality these two teams both share is they both had great Co-Ed League success on Monday Night — be sure to check out the Co-Ed Wrap-Up as well!  Team Apuli’s game is highlighted above — they lost in a heartbreaker and Team Hakimian would probably rather me just forget last Monday ever happened.. Which I will do.  That being said, I expect both teams to jump up the Power Rankings for next week.

Rest of the Pack –

Team Radist (Greater Than) –  Currently tied for 10th in the Standings with 35 points. – Dropped out of the Rankings this week after being #7 last week. They took one on the chin in Softball this week — what’s good news for these guys is 16″ Softball is completely behind them (until the Championship) for the Summer.  They have looked good in other sports this Summer and have a few more weeks to improve their Playoff position.

Team Saltzberg (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently tied for 13th in the Standings with 30 points. – The first one is always the hardest.  These guys got their first W of the season on Monday Night on the softball diamond v. Team Radist (Greater Than).  Need to give a special shout-out to Joe “Puig” Mlachak who had 3 HRs and 9RBIs on Monday Night. Holy Cow!  These guys need another win or two to solidify a Playoff spot but momentum is now on their side for the first time this season.

Team Merar (Sandusky Cabinets) – Currently tied for 13th in the Standings with 30 points. – In 2011 these guys won back to back 16″ Softball games to secure the All Sports Series Chicago Men’s Championship. I think this past monday was an anomaly.  They still need more Ws to get into the Playoffs however.

Team Sterk (Atomic Transport) – Currently in 15th in the Standings with 20 points. – Mentioned above in Team Bulwa’s section I said I thought they had the most impressive win of Week 4.  This totally and completely has to do with what I feel about Team Sterk.. These guys are uber athletic and hungry for Ws and it shows.  They have had a gauntlet of a schedule to start the Season and I promise you they will be heard from by the time the Summer comes to a close. Captain Mike “@sterkwood” Sterk’s crew was helped  Jake “the snake” Toohey who threw for 3 TDs.  They literally came one 3-pt conversion away from winning flag football and being in the middle of the Power Rankings.. They’ll be back in no time.

Team Daar (PoPchips), Team Greenberg (Teplitz & Bell) & Team Zimmerman (Crystal Lake Jeep) – Currently tied for 16th in the Standings with 0 points. — This is not me making excuses — these are facts — all 3 teams have had really tough schedules to start the season and with some luck would not only have a win, but multiple.  All 3 teams have had leads this Summer and just haven’t been able to close it out.  I call this Marmolitis.  They will all get Ws before the season is over and like I said last week when Team Saltzberg was in this group — 1 or 2 are going to shock the world and make the Playoffs.  Heard it here first.

That is it for the Wrap-Up this week. See everyone on Monday night! Have a great weekend!
