2013 Chicago Men’s – Week 5 Hoops & 16″ (July 16)

Updated: July 18, 2013

Believe it or not there are only 2 weeks left in the Regular Season now that Week 5 has come and gone..  Here is a link to the Vide Highlights for this week.. As we sprint toward the Playoffs most teams have one game left and then the Volleyball Tourney.  Team Saltzberg (Wrigley View Rooftop) and Team Hakimian (Crescent Movers) have an extra Hoops game as a make up from a few weeks back.  Tons of points are still out there but it is definitely go time in the Chicago Men’s League.  Okay — Power Rankings Time.

Power Rankings

1. Team Watts (Giordano’s Pizza) – Currently in 1st in the Standings with 90 points.

So last week I had them 1st in the Power Rankings and they were only tied for 3rd in the Standings. This week they have jumped up to 1st in the Standings as well after not 1 but 2 Hoops victories on Monday Night.  Thanks for making me look smart fellas (need all the help I can get).  Team Watts took down Team Sterk (Atomic Transport) 86-47 and then took down Team Cohen (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) in a game that immediately followed 69-48.  Simply put they were firing on all cylinders.  Certain teams are made to be hunters and as soon as they become the hunted they crumble.  Not this squad.  They walked in with a different swag on Monday Night — they enjoy being the top dog.  Captain Jake “Pat Riley” Watts and crew can taste that crown — it’s still 4 weeks away however.  Matthew “wears #10 like some other” Sharp scored 21 in the game v. Team Sterk and Franklin “down low” Thompson had 18 against Team Cohen to lead the team in scoring.  Next week will be telling for these guys as in years past Softball has served as the hiccup to their title hopes.  Can they get over the hump?  Team Bulwa (Bull & Bear) is one of the best 16″ teams around and that’s who they will face next week!
2. Team Hadelman (Carriage Hill Kennels) – Currently in 2nd in the Standings with 80 points.
Was I too hard on these guys last week?  Most Likely.  Last week in the Power Rankings these guys dropped from 1st to 6th after several other top teams got Ws and they fell in Flag Football.  Boy did they ever rebound this week — they won their Hoops game 89-53.  There was some conversations on Twitter post-game and Team Hadelman wanted to serve a message to everyone that Week 4 was simply a blip on the radar and they are still ones to be reckoned with.  Danny “original med man” Goldin went for 19 to lead all scorers in this one.   To say that I am excited for this team’s game next week would be just a gigantic understatement.  They will face-off with the 2-Time and Defending Champs Team Hakimian in Hoops.  Let me remind you that all of a sudden Team Hakimian is near “must-win” territory as well.  Can Team Hadelman — one of the new kids on the block — derail the Dynasty?  I literally #can’twait #bartscott.
3. Team Maione (Sunset Foods) – Currently in 4th in the Standings with 70 points.

These guys had one of the toughest games on their Schedule Monday Night and pulled out a Giant W.  This Hoops game was circled in a bright red marker for both Team Maione and their opponent Team Bulwa.  Both teams have a tremendous amount of talent and it showed on Monday Night.  Team Maione (Anthony’s squad — not to be confused with older brother Mike who is on Team Bulwa or little bro Frank) actually broke out to a 20+ point lead early in the game.  Johnny “the specimen” Lindquist was quoted after the game saying “they weren’t ready for our intensity in the beginning of the game.”   However, Team Bulwa clawed back and was actually within 2 points from Team Maione with just minutes to go in the game.  When it was all said and done Team Maione won by 6 points thanks in large part to Captain Twan’s 16 points and Josh “welcome back” Bartlestein’s 17.  The road doesn’t get any easier for these guys as next week they have another huge matchup facing off with Team Sterk who I know will be one of the better Softball teams around this Summer.  With just 2 weeks remaining how high can these guys climb?

4. Team Horwitz (Stuart Levin & Associates Insurance) – Currently in 3rd in the Standings with 75 points.

This is the highest up in either the Power Rankings or the Standings this team has ever been and they are an #Original12 squad.  This can go 1 of 2 ways.. 1) They have finally gotten over the hump and they are looking at a deep Playoff Run or 2) this is their peak..  I have a feeling as to which way it’ll go.. Want to know?  I’m going with option #1 and let me tell you why.. These guys have had a hard schedule on the Hoops court and have still managed to hold their own.  I think if they can close out the Regular Season with a few more points than they can surprise someone in the Opening Round Hoops games.  I also think they are sneaky good softball team as Team Daar can attest.  Joe “Bernstein – ” Karmin went a perfect 3 for 3 from the plate on Monday Night and scored twice to help lead the way for this bunch.  They have a Hoops game next week some old friends by the name of Team Apuli (Factor75.com) — should be a fun one.

5. Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 5th in the Standings with 65 points.

Is this nepotism week or what??  Just Kidding. These guys have more than earned their right to round out the top 5 after their Softball W on Monday Night.  Let me set the stage for you.. Two #Original12 squads — 1) The Dynasty, 2x Champs, and Defending Champs Team Hakimian and 2) 2011 5th place — Team Kornblatt.   While the resumes might not speak to how close these two squads are or how big a Rivalry has formed since 2010 — the words leading up to the game certainly do..  Team Kornblatt got out to an early 4-2 lead behind Matt “put em on his back” Emer and his Homer! But Team Hakimian fought right back to take the lead 5-4. Let’s fast-forward to the bottom of 6th inning… Up to bat but still trailing by a run, Team Kornblatt down to their final out of the inning – this is when the wheels fell off for Team Hakimian. A hard-hit ground ball to the left side of the infield got scooped and flipped to second, but after a dropped exchange, Derek “scrappy doo” Reinglass dove into the bag and avoided the tag. Team Kornblatt would go on to score SIX 2-out runs and take a commanding 10-5 lead that they would not relinquish in the 7th.  So was this an uncharacteristic giveaway by Team Hakimian or is this somewhat of a passing of the guard?  I’m not quite sure yet.. I usually speak of the peaks and valleys of this Team. How week in and week out your not quite sure which team will show up — What I do know is that if the team that has shown up for the past couple of weeks appears for the Volleyball Tourney and the Playoffs — well it might be time to go ahead and crown their _____ (acronym for All Sports Series).

6. Team Cohen (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 5th in the Standings with 65 points.

Let me start out by saying that somethings are way way more important well than anything else.. Without going into too much detail I want to just give a quick shout-out to Team Cohen who helped out a complete stranger on Monday Night while at the Lincoln Park fields — totally unrelated to the League but just want to give them a quick nod of appreciation as a fellow Chicagoan.

Ok back to the Rankings — these guys had a double dip on Monday Night — 1st up was softball with Rival Team Apuli and then the nightcap was with Team Watts on the Hoops court.  If you asked Team Cohen if they could only have 1 of the 2 games which one would it be — they’d definitely answer Game 1 Softball with Team Apuli.  That’s not just because it is against a Rivalry team but because they are smart guys and softball is worth twice as much as Hoops in the Standings!  Well, that is exactly what happened last week. Team Cohen picked up the softball game W after a sea-saw affair and just looked exhausted during their L to Team Watts in the wee hours of Monday evening.  All in all they gained some much needed ground in the Standings on some teams in the middle of the pack who dropped their Monday night contests.   Finally, I have to mention Jeremy “marathon man” Bauer — who before his Men’s League games competed in Flag Football in the Co-Ed League (had a TD), then went on to go 3 for 3 in Softball with 3 huge RBIs and finished the night off with 26 points in Hoops.  May be one of the most impressive nights in All Sports Series history by one person.  That is good enough to earn the Greater Than @DrinkGT Performance of the Week!

7. Team Bulwa (Bull & Bear) – Currently tied for 8th in the Standings with 60 points.

Scheduling matters in All Sports Series. It’s just a fact.  It matters who you play and in what sport.  Not making excuses for the 2012 Runners-Up but man have they had a tough road.  Now, I’m not saying that they are the only ones — the League is sooo deep this Season so many teams have a tough road — it just seems that Team Bulwa is getting other Teams at their best week in and week out.  That being said even though they made a valiant comeback against Team Maione on Monday they just couldnt get the W.  Robbie “tree” Georgevich did manage to put up 18 in the comeback attempt.  Next week they have an important 16″ Softball matchup with #1 Team Watts.  I think this could be a Playoff Preview and I’m personally excited to see how it comes out.

Quick Aside — If you aren’t busy this weekend contact Captain Zach Bulwa about his 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament called Cure It on The Court — it’s for a great cause and there’s some great competition out there.

8. Team Glass (Michael’s Event Catering) – Currently tied for 5th in the Standings with 65 points.

Maybe I got ahead of myself last week?  Or maybe they just got caught at the right place by the right team?  Last week I had anointed Team Glass as BACK!  They were #1 in the Standings and #2 in the Power Rankings however, this week they had a setback against the familiar faces of Team Zimmerman.  Team Zimmerman was searching for their first win and simply played like the more desperate team..  Next week Team Glass faces off with Team Radist on the gridiron.

9. Team Radist (Greater Than) – Currently in 10th in the Standings with 50 points.

I love when that works out.. When the last team I mentioned in the previous section happens to be the next Team up in the Rankings. Just love the flow.. Anyways, these guys got a “hard-fought” (literally) W against Team Riskin in Hoops Monday.  It was an OT thriller and tempers did flare toward the end of the 2nd half.  Both teams played well enough to win but in Over Time it was the duo of Alex “Mr. Big Shot” Rubin  (had 33 which somehow lowers his average) and Justin “smooth” Kaminsky (had 17 of his own) who delivered the victory for Team Radist.  Their flag football game next week with Team Glass has serious Seeding Implications with the Playoffs just around the corner.

10. Team Riskin (Jam ‘n Honey) – Currently tied for 8th in the Standings with 60 points.

As I said above in Team Radist’s section — it was an intense OT Hoops game and Team Riskin came up with the short end of the stick. This is their 2nd tough pill to swallow as they dropped their Week 1 Hockey game by a goal in the closing minutes.  What’s encouraging for them however, is they managed to rebound nicely from that first loss and there’s no reason they can’t repeat that cycle.  Next Week they have a Rivalry game with Team Saltzberg on the Flag Football field — let’s hope they’ve had enough time to cool down by the time that game kicks-off. It’s a must win for Team Saltzberg — will Team Riskin be able to essentially end their season early?

Rest of the Pack

Team Merar (Sandusky Cabinets) – Currently in 11th in the Standings with 45 points. – They finished their Hoops schedule this Summer with a perfect 3-0 record.  It just so happens they haven’t won in another sport.. So what does that mean?  I wouldn’t want to play them in the Opening Round Hoops games.  Also, another thing to keep an eye on is Jake “Stud” Weiner who had 32 points is off to Jacksonville and will not be able to finish up the Summer with the squad. Big Blow for Team Merar.

Team Hakimian (Crescent Movers) – Currently tied for 12th in the Standings with 40 points. – This is an odd spot for Team Hakimian.  Never in a season have these guys faced this type of adversity.  Most of this can be chalked up to a deeper field certainly. However, they also are letting games they normally would close out slip through their fingers.  It is so hard to Repeat in All Sports Series — so hard that no one ever has.. I still think this group is capable of doing it however.  They have a double header next week and with that tons of opportunity to climb back up the Standings.

Team Apuli (Factor75.com) – Currently tied for 12th in the Standings with 40 points. – A final 4 squad a year ago, this is not the place Team Apuli thought they’d find themselves.  They have a Hoops game with Team Horwitz next Monday night — a game both teams have been looking forward to and a game both teams really need. Should be a fun one.

Team Saltzberg (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently in 14th in the Standings with 30 points. – Forget about everything up until right now. Team Saltzberg has everything they possibly could need to get into the Playoffs. This week they have a flag football game and a hoops game.  That’s 40 possible points they can get which could leapfrog them right into a Playoff Spot.  So the question is.. Can they do it?

Team Sterk (Atomic Transport) – Currently in 15th in the Standings with 20 points. –  They started out like a house of fire and have faltered since Week 1 — I have it on good authority this team’s strong suit will be softball and as luck would have it they have softball next week! They do have a very tough opponent in Team Maione waiting for them on the diamond however. Week 6 is essentially a playoff game for Team Sterk. Good Luck guys!

Team Zimmeman (Crystal Lake Jeep) – Currently in 16th in the Standings with 15 points. –  The first one is the hardest.  Now that their first All Sports Series W is in the books they are looking for #2.  I have to mention “Mad” Max Boton who had 29 points on Monday Night.  He was awesome.  The whole team looked great really.  Like I said it just takes a couple weeks to get the groove of things playing together. They still have time to sneak in the Playoffs and a Rival in Team Cohen will be hoping to shut that door in Hoops next week!

Team Greenberg (Teplitz & Bell) & Team Daar (PoPchips) – Currently tied for 17th in the Standings with 0 points. – Simple stuff.  Need to get points and need to get them fast.  Both teams need wins next week and then to get through in the Volleyball Tourney.  This isn’t an unheard of feat as we have had scoreless teams going into Week 6 make the Playoffs.  There is a shot!  Just need some bounces to go the right way.

That’s it for the Wrap-Up.. By this time next week all that will be separating us from the Playoffs will be the Volleyball Tourney.. Exciting stuff ahead. Have a great weekend.
