Welcome back to the College/Prep blog Wrap-up!  A link to the Video Highlights can be found right here.

If the picture above looks eerily familiar to you… It’s because for 2nd consecutive year Team Greco (Crescent Movers) have won the Suburbs College/Prep Volleyball Tourney!  I think a huge Congrats is in store for these guys.. If you are still reading please join me in giving them a brief round of applause.

The Power Rankings will look a little different this week since there were so many games and no true Stats to report on. There will be a run down of the Knockout Rounds of the VBall Tourney then a top 10 Power Rankings will be revealed at the bottom and that will be it.  Next week the normal format will return.. Volleyball Tourney – Knockout Round Recap

Elite 8:

1. Team Greco (Crescent Movers) v. 8.Team Levin (Sarkis Cafe)

4. Team Valvassori (Once Upon a Bagel) v. 5. Team Rijos (Salon ALX)

3. Team Lev (Highland Pop) v. 6. Team Maione (Norton’s)

2. Team Simon (Carriage Hill Kennels) v. 7. Team Wilneff (Factor75.com)

The Elite 8 round was a true “who’s who” of the College/Prep Vball landscape.  In the end it went all chalk as the top 4 seeds from Pool play would advance on to the Final 4.  The true gem of this round came via the 4. Team Valvassori (Once Upon a Bagel) v. 5. Team Rijos (Salon ALX) matchup.  Both teams traded leads back and forth throughout the Game.  In the end Team Valvassori pulled it out 25-23 behind the great play of Matt “this run to the Final 4 did not surprise him” Wascher.  Team Rijos fought valiantly throughout the day and were certainly bummed to not move on.. However, they picked up 7 big points and that was enough to be in the top 5 in terms of points on this day.. The 7 points actually leapfrogged them past quite a few teams in the Standings.  Captain Parker “peter” Rijos and his guys should be riding this momentum into next week’s Flag Football.

Just to show how deep the tourney was this year — Team Maione (Norton’s) who boasts Volleyball studs such as Austin “boom” Natkin and David “one of the more impressive VBall resumes out there” Ofer saw an Elite 8 exit.. Just a very impressive field..

Final 4:

1. Team Greco (Crescent Movers) v. 4. Team Valvassori (Once Upon a Bagel)

2. Team Simon (Carriage Hill Kennels) v. 3. Team Lev (Highland Pop)

So the stage was set for the 4 best teams throughout the day to slug it out.  This was the very best volleyball All Sports Series has ever seen.  As tournaments whittle down the play obviously usually will improve.  What made these games so much more impressive than any others was the ability by the all teams to keep the plays alive.  3 hits were being used constantly and big hitters were getting their swings in.. But again, the most impressive part was the back row players who had the ability to dig the spikes and make a good pass to set up their own team’s opportunity on offense.  It was unbelievable to watch and it is what All Sports Series is all about.

Team Simon was the first team to advance after knocking out their fellow Northbrook residents Team Lev by the score of 25-19.  There was one key run where Team Simon led by Lucas “thunder” Jacobson, Jared “Rise’nFire” Weisberg and Trevor “you gotta get up to get down” Ponticelli.  Man can these guys play — and that is not referring to Hoops anymore folks. Team Simon is the real deal and it seems like they are going to be a tough out come August.  It would be a complete failure to not mention Team Lev at this juncture.  They won many impressive games throughout the day and with a few breaks could have seen themselves in the Final.  Captain Mitchell “Freshman All-Star” Lev was excellent all day as was Brian “super setter” Callahan, Andrew “throws it down” Salomone and Kyle “All-State” Bedford.

The second spot in the Championship Game would finally belong to Team Greco after a marathon of a game with Team Valvassori. Team Greco won the game 29-27 after a sea-saw affair. The volleys in this game were unreal. Just amazing to watch.  Team Valvassori had the defending VBall champs on the ropes several times actually even reaching “Game Point” on a couple of occasions.  However, that is what makes Champions great.  They bend but do not break. Team Greco got a few timely hits from Mehyar “going to shorten your last name” Amani and a key block by Owen “A” Kugler to turn the tide in their favor one final time.

Championship and 3rd Place Games:

For the first time all year one team has a lead over the rest of the pack in the Standings.  After their 2nd straight College/Prep Volleyball Tournament Victory that team is Team Greco.  Is there any doubt who would be #1 in the Power Rankings this Week?  No I didn’t think so either.. I cant help but mention the whole team here as these guys fought so  Captain Morris Greco was joined by passing extraordinaires Ben Detzner, Danny Greenhill, Michael Kleinmuntz, Nick Fiore, and Brian Evans.  Those guys did what hey could to set up the big hitters on the squad: Owen Kugler, the Amanis – Mehyar and Maysem and finally the Temples – Chris and Matt.  It was the deepest volleyball pool the College/Prep League has ever seen and these guys deserve all the credit in the world for surviving through it.
