2013 Suburbs College/Prep – Week 4 Flag Football (July 1)

Updated: July 1, 2013

Week 4 blog Wrap-Up begins right now!  Here is a link t the weekly Video Highlights.   So believe it or not we are over half done with the Regular Season.  The sprint to the Playoffs really begin this minute as several teams are trying to claw their way into the Field of 16.  This week was the first Flag Football week of the Summer and as always there were some great plays, crazy finishes and a little extra-curricular stuff between a few teams.  Next week is the final Hoops week of the Regular Season!

Power Rankings:

1. Team Greco (Crescent Movers) – Currently in 1st in the Standings with 90 points.

Team Greco post-Volleyball Tourney win was definitely a storyline to keep an eye entering Week 4.  Many times after a huge week teams will fall back down to Earth.  Not this squad.  Led by Captain Morris “terrified but happy to see you back on the Flag Football field” Greco and his whopping 5 total TDs.  These guys have earned the right to be called #1 and once again backed it up during their play on Sunday.  Adding to the fun was Danny “great hands” Greenhill who hauled in 2 TD receptions and Alex “all day in” May who started the game off right for these guys with a Pick-6.   Next week they have a gigantic match-up with #2 in the Power Rankings —

2.  Team Simon (Carriage Hill Kennels) – Currently in 2nd in the Standings with 75 points.

Some would say that Team Simon deserves to be the #1 Team in the Power Rankings each and every week..  I can’t blame them — if you look at who these guys have beat, by how much they have beaten them by, and the ease in which they are doing it.. Well, let’s just put it this way — They have looked as dominant as any team has EVER in the history of an All Sports Series Regular Season.  this past week they beat 2012 Runners-Up Team Maione (Norton’s) by 33 points.  In flag football. That is no joke.  We know that they are going to be in the Playoffs and we know they are do for a run.. What interests me is how will they respond to a touch of adversity in the Playoffs after just wrecking so many during the season? Time will tell.  Curt “Warner” Petty (I realize the other kurt is with a K) accounted for 6 Tuddy’s on the day and looked magnificent in the pocket.  Next week, all that is at stake is #1 in the Power Rankings and more importantly an opportunity to grab a hold of a tie for the #1 Seed in the Standings with just 2 weeks to go.  Gus Johnson is being flown in to do the broad cast.  Not really.

3. Team Valvassori (Once Upon a Bagel) – Currently in 3rd in the Standings with 65 points.

These guys have certainly made the leap from their Rookie season into their Sophomore one.  They have gotten points every week of All Sports Series so far (including a 3rd place in Vball last week) and this past week was certainly no different.. Not only did they pitch a shutout but they won their game by 20 points over Team Kuhns (Janice Goldblatt).  For those unaware of the guys who play in Carolina Blue — let me remind you that they have been in or near the top 5 of the Power Rankings all season long.  Dillon “Ruettiger” Rudy is making a case for the Most Improved Player of 2013 — adding 3 TDs to his resume.  They also got some help from Jake “tough as nails” Abt who not only scored a TD but went one on one with the Soccer goal post and kept playing.  If they get a win next week they are all but assured a top 2 spot in the Power Rankings since #1 or #2 must fall.

4. Team Wilneff (Factor75.com) – Currently tied for 4th in the Standings with 53 points.

A win is a win is a win is a win.  Or something like that.  These guys are regarded as the best football crew around — and for great reason.  They are talented at every position and can strike in a heartbeat.  Two things must be said as a result of this: 1) Team Sternberg (Camp Ojibwa) deserves more than a lot of credit for their fight on Sunday.  These guys came within inches of taking down Team Wilneff in a game that will be remembered after the Summer & 2) not sure if Team Wilneff is totally and completely on the same page just yet. Again, Team Wilneff is an #original12 squad, but this version is different than the previous squads.  There is so so much talent but they might still need a little time to actually play together.  Since they’ve on everything other than the Vball Tourney — you’d have to say they are doing well for learning on the fly.  Johnny “yes that” Lindquist threw for 2 scores and Jerome “X factor” Christmas hauled in 2 as well.  Team Sternberg did show there is a formula to compete with these guys on the grid iron — something many probably thought was impossible..

5. Team Levin (Sarkis Cafe) – Currently tied for 4th in the Standings with 53 points.

Team Levin is following their 2012 script to a tee.  They are winning games, flying under the radar, and securing a playoff spot.  These guys have been so solid in their second season.  Tommy “boy” Sutker showed why he is one of the best players in the League on Sunday — leading his team to a Flag Football victory 14-9 and having 2 TD passes.  Noah “picked the ball right out of the air” Pickus had a big TD grab in this one as well.  Simply put these young guns are fearless and even if no one else is paying attention — they have mine.

6. Team Lev (Highland Pop) – Currently in 6th in the Standings with 45 points.

Spoiler Alert — Team Lev can play Flag Football.  Well.  They looked awesome on Sunday Afternoon.  In fact, since their one-point Week 1 Loss to Team Deutsch, Team Lev has really found their groove.  Mitchell “mitchy football” Lev tallied SEVEN Touchdowns on Sunday evening.  SEVEN!!! That led all players for the entire week.  Zachary “dropping the” Hamer had a TD grab and a Pick6 to boot as well.  They simply rolled on Sunday and I wouldn’t want to be in their way anytime soon.  Next week, they are playing Team Sternberg in one of the games I simply cannot wait for..

7. Team Watts (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 7th in the Standings with 35 points.

Alex “won’t take a” Sacks (ehh? ehh? ya that wasn’t great..) tallied 4 TDs in this one to lead Team Watts past Team Putlak (Tamales).  Connor “he can play football too folks” Shields hauled in 2 TDs as did Marc “Bulger” Pagano.  Team Watts has regained their winning form since Week 1 and I think they look as dangerous as any of the teams ranked outside of the first few.  These guys’ bread and butter last season was on the Hoops court but right now it seems they are good to go on any playing surface.  I’m excited to see how high these guys can climb up the Standings before Playoff time.

8. Team Maione (Norton’s) – Currently in 9th in the Standings with 33 points.

You win some. You lose some.  They still belong in the Power Rankings through the first four weeks.. Not a ton to highlight in this one but Zach “2 firsts, 0 lasts” Ryan did haul in a TD grab.  I expect a bounce back week from the 2012 Runners-Up.

9. Team Abramson (Menchie’s) – Currently tied for 7th in the Standings with 35 points.

49 points is sooo many points.  Well done Team Abramson.  Ross “RFIII” Feldgreber totaled 5 TDs on Sunday and made it look easy; his favorite target Todd “sweet feet” Neuhausen hauled in 4 TDs.  Team Abramson has not been used to Ls in All Sports Series especially in the Regular Season — these past few weeks have definitely been rockier than planned, but they rebounded nicely on Sunday and I anticipate a strong finish w/ a high Playoff seed.

t-10. Team Merritt (Michael’s Event Catering) and Team Teitelbaum (North Shore Turf Industries) – Currently tied for 11th with 20 points.

So I try not to do too many ties in the Power Rankings but to split these two up at this point would just be impossible.  Both came into Flag Football searching for their first win and first points of the season.  Both came out of Sunday with that first W and a newfound sense of confidence!  For Team Merritt — the youngest team in All Sports Series — I think they were pleasantly surprised leaving Sunday’s game with that first taste of victory.  Garrett “Chase Daniel” Cohen was poised in the pocket all day long and had 4 TD passes to lead his team to the W.  For Team Teitelbaum — guys who have played in All Sports Series before and who have had some success, these past few weeks must have been agonizing. That all changed on Sunday however w/ their win over Team Gambino (Sushi Kushi Too).  Zack “#Mr.42” Hilgendorf threw for 4 scores as well in this one.  Both of these teams would have a Playoff spot if the tournament started today — a place you always want to find yourselves. Congrats to both squads.

Rest of the Pack:

Team Deutsch (Baker Boys) – Currently in 10th in the Standings with 30 points.

Not their best week.  Not too many highlights to speak of either.  These guys are at least going to get to play Hoops next week where they are 2-0 this Summer.  Likely heading back into the Rankings come this time next week.

Team Gordon (Gordon Bros. Steel) – Currently tied for 13 in the Standings with 15 points.

Another hard loss for Team Gordon.. They’ve lost Hoops by 1 point and now football by 1 possession.. That’s just the way it goes sometimes.. More importantly I want to say thanks to the guys from the team who joined myself, Captain Eric “Igor” Gordon, our families and the couple thousand others at the National Kidney of Illinois Gift of Life Walk Sunday morning before the games.

Team Putlak (Tamales) – Currently tied for 13 in the Standings with 15 points.

If the Playoffs started today you’d be in. That counts for something.. Rough week this past Sunday but the points Team Putlak have gotten this year are on the same Hoops court they will find themselves on Next Week.

Team Sternberg (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 13 in the Standings with 15 points.

So if a couple super close calls would have gone their way – this team would not be here in the Power Rankings..  That’s not just about this week.  They’ve had another one in Week 2 Hoops.  These guys are the defending champs (and I’ve said it a million times — it’s not the same group — but their Captain Sam “coach” Sternberg is a Championship winning Captain — those don’t just come out of no where).  Not only are they going to make the playoffs — but I expect them to be there in the end with the teams list atop the Power Rankings.  I’m not sure what seed they’ll be yet or who they will have to knock off in the first or second round to get there.  I am just confident in this group.  Not to mention, they know for a fact they can go toe to toe with the team that many think are the best football bunch around Team Wilneff.  That’s not bad experience with a Championship Flag Football game coming in August.

Team Rijos (Salon ALX) – Currently in 16th in the Standings with 7 points.

Many teams take the Volleyball tourney as a joke if they think they can’t win.. Exhibit A for why not to do that is right here — Team Rijos won their Pool in Week 3 and picked up a HUGE 7 points.  If the Playoffs started now they’d have enough to sneak in as the final seed.. They of course will likely need more to hold off the 4 teams behind them for 3 more weeks..

Team Almeleh (Loree’s Closet), Team Gambino (Sushi Kushi Too), Team Kuhns (Janice Goldblatt), Team Liss (Testing Timers) – Currently tied for 17th in the Standings with 0 points.

All of these squads are searching for their first All Sports Series win of the Summer as we head in to week 5.  Let me tell you something — 1 maybe 2 of these squads will not just make the Playoffs this Summer but they will win a game when they get there.  Mark it down. You heard it here first.  Also, with 3 weeks left — crazier things have definitely happened than all 4 of these teams getting in to the Playoffs.
