2014-15 Hoops – Week 17 (March 1)

By
Updated: March 5, 2015

..and then there was one.. That’s right gentlemen, just one week left in the 18-Week Regular Season.  A lot has happened in the 137 days since Oct. 19, 2014 when we officially Tipped-Off the 2014-15 Hoops League.  A lot of things have stayed the same.. Team Lalez and Team Maione entered the season as front-runners and will head into the Playoffs as such.. A lot of things have changed as well.. We’ve seen new kids on the block — Team Harris and Team Horwitz — come through and really make a name for themselves.  This season has had upsets, OT Thrillers, comebacks, throw-downs, and statements.. And after next week, all of that gives way to the second season.  It’s the Playoffs.  The best time of the year. Still a bit of unfinished business to take care of before we get there though.. Here’s the Weekly Highlight VideoAlso, many of you have already voted but just as a reminder to the rest — the All-Star Ballot is officially LIVE (w/new rules) — right here! Only a few weeks left to VOTE.  ONLY A COUPLE WEEKS LEFT TO VOTE!

The Power Rankings are going to change this week and move to a Playoff Seeding Scenario format.  Teams will be listed in order of the Standings and we’ll do a “What if XYZ..” to see where they could land a week from now when Team’s lives are officially on the clock…

Final thing before we start —

Playoff Seeding Reminder

1)  All 16 Teams makes the Triple Elimination Playoff Bracket.

2) Teams seeded #1 through #4 essentially get a bye in the Opening Round while Teams seeded #13 through #16 start the Playoffs with 1-Loss already.  That Leaves Teams seeded #5 through #12 to play in the Opening Round.

2a) The Four Regular-Season Division Champs are assured a Top 6 seed.

2b) If a Team who finishes in 2nd in their Division finishes with the 2nd or 3rd Best Record in the League they will be seeded above the Division Winners with worse Records. Note: This can only happen twice so the lowest a Division Winner can be Seeded is #6.

Recap:  You want to be in the Top4 and be out of the Bottom4 before the Playoffs start.  Here’s a Link to the Playoff Bracket.

Playoff Seeding Scenarios:

Top 4 Seeds – Teams seeded #1 through #4 will have Games on March 15.  They will play Teams who won their Opening Rounds Games immediately prior to Game Time.

1. Team Maione (Biaggi’s Blue) – 16-1, Clinched 1st in West Division and #1 Seed

Following Big Shot Brad’s 3ball at the buzzer to beat Team Horwitz, Team Maione has officially locked up the #1 Seed for the Playoffs.  Even with a Loss in Week 18, they have the tiebreaker over the only possible 2-Loss squad – Team Lalez and, thus, they will have “home court” throughout the Playoffs.

2. Team Lalez (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 15-2, Currently 1st in South Division and Clinched Top 4 Seed

It’s simple for the Defending Champs entering the final week of the Regular Season.. Win and they are the #2 Seed.  Lose and they can fall to #3 (pending tiebreaker situations with Team Zimmerman)..  They do hold the tiebreaker with a head to head win over Team Harris and, thus, they can’t fall down to #4 even if they lose next Sunday.  Their Game with Team Zimmerman on Sunday Night will decide the #2 Seed and the South Division Crown… The tiebreaker will be discussed in the Team Zimmerman section.

3. Team Harris (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – 14-3, Clinched 1st in North Division and Top 4 Seed

Win and they are the 3 seed. No matter what happens in the Lalez/Zimmerman Game.. Team Harris was beaten by Team Lalez so they can’t get up to #2 even with a Lalez Loss and Team Harris defeated Team Zimmerman so they can’t drop down to #4 even with a Team Zimmerman Win..  Now, if Team Harris drops their final game against Team Shamberg, then they can drop down to #4 IF Team Zimmerman wins AND wins the tiebreaker (explained below) with Team Lalez for the South Division crown. In that event,  Team Lalez would finish #3 and Team Harris is bumped to the #4 spot..

4. Team Zimmerman (Biaggi’s Orange) – 14-3, Currently 2nd in South Division and Clinched Top 4 Seed

The Team in the Top4 with the most to gain on Sunday Night is Team Zimmerman.. Here’s whats at stake if they defeat the Defending Champs Team Lalez in a Rematch from Week 3 — They pull into a tie with Team Lalez at 15-3 atop the South Division. Both Teams would own a win over the other, so the head to head tiebreaker means nothing.. Both Teams would be 5-1 within their own Division.. So still tied.  Strength of Schedule doesn’t come into play here since they are in the Same Division and, thus, played the same exact schedule.. So the tiebreaker here will get pretty crazy in the event Team Zimmerman wins.. Here’s what we’ll go to.. If Team Zimmerman wins, we will go to a margin of victory tiebreaker in the Two Head to Head Games played by the Lalez/Zimmerman Game.  Team Lalez defeated Team Zimmerman by 7 points back in Week 3.  So Team Zimmerman would need a 7 point Win to force an even crazier tiebreaker (overall season margin of victory) or Win by 8 to take the Division out right.  Basically, through all this madness we are left with 3 possible scenarios… 1) Team Lalez Wins – none of the tiebreaker stuff matters and the seeds go Lalez, Harris, Zimmerman in that order.. 2) Zimmerman Wins by less than 7.. Lalez then still wins Division and gets the #2 seed, followed by Team Harris then Zimmerman (Harris owns H2H w/ Zimmerman).. 3) Zimmerman wins by more than 7.. Takes the Division and #2 Seed.. Lalez finishes #3 and pushes Team Harris to #4.. OK, there’s really 4 possibilities, let’s all just hope Team Zimmerman doesn’t win by 7 points on Sunday Night.

No other Teams are elgible for Top4 Seeds.

Middle 8 Seeds – Teams seeded #5 through #12 will play in the Opening Round on March 15.   Winners will play immediately following against a Top 4 Seed in the No Loss Bracket. Losers of the Opening Round Games will fall to the 1 Loss Bracket.

5. Team Horwitz (Esser Hayes Insurance Co.) – 11-6, Clinched Middle 8 Seed

t-6. Team Kozin (Theory) & Team Goldin (Cy Fredrics) – 10-7, Currently tied for 1st in East Division and Clinched Middle 8 Seed

All 3 Teams are connected now heading into the final Week. All have a chance to get to #5 and all could fall to #7.

If Team Horwitz beats the hot Team Schwartz on Sunday Night they will finish #5 when the Playoffs begin and take the 2nd “Wild Card” spot for the Top 6 Seeds.   Then it would come down to Team Goldin and Team Kozin for the East Crown and the #6 Seed. Remember Team Kozin has the head to head tiebreaker.. So if they win, no matter what they finish ahead of Team Goldin.. Team Goldin needs a Team Kozin Loss + their own W to win the Division.

Let’s do some Math now (yay) —   Basically here’s the deal… Horwitz L + Goldin W + Kozin L = Goldin #5,  Horwitz #6, Kozin #7.

Now with Horwitz L + Goldin L + Kozin W = Horwitz #5, Kozin #6 and Goldin #7.

Finally, if Team Horwitz Loses + Wins from both Goldin/Kozin — Kozin finishes #5, Horwitz #6 and Goldin #7.

Now you know.

t-8. Team Apuli (iShot Mounts), Team Bernkopf (Stems), Team Schwartz (Greater Than), Team Shamberg (Muchacha Salsa Silver) – 7-10, All have clinched Middle 8 Seeds.

Here’s the deal. All 4 Teams sit at 7-10.  There’s a million different tiebreaker scenarios.. Team Hernandez sits at 6-11 and with a win can pull into a tie with any of these Teams.. More on them below in their section.. Here’s how those 4 stacked up against each other this Season..

Team Apuli — Split with Schwartz, Defeated Bernkopf, Defeated Shamberg

Team Bernkopf — Lost to Apuli, Defeated Schwartz, Lost to Shamberg

Team Schwartz — Split with Apuli, Lost to Bernkopf, Defeated Shamberg

Team Shamberg — Defeated Bernkopf, Lost to Schwartz, Lost to Apuli

You’ll notice Team Apuli has the edge in most cases in the event they come into situation where they need the head to head tiebreaker. Please note though, if multiple Teams tie at the end of the season with the same record.. We’ll use the combined head to head of the involved Teams..

All 4 Teams will fall in the #8 through #12 Seed range.

12. Team Hernandez (Kelly Parker Home Collective) – 6-11, Clinched Middle 8 Seed.

If Team Hernandez wins.. The 4 Teams above are “catchable” for them since they are just a Game back of all of them..  Here’s what Team Hernandez did against those 4 this season: Lost to Shamberg, Lost to Bernkopf, Defeated Apuli, Lost to Schwartz..  That means the only Team they can actually pass due to Head to Head Tiebreaker is Team Apuli.. Team Apuli as we learned above  has the tiebreaker advantage though over many of those 4.. This has potential to get awfully crazy if we wind up with a bunch of 7-11 Teams… Note: If more than 2 Teams tie with the same Record we’ll look at combined head to head records for the tied Teams..

In the event Team Hernandez loses..  They defeated Team Holzman who is the only Team currently in the Bottom 4 who could catch Team Hernandez record wise.. Thus, Team Hernandez has clinched at least the #12 Seed.

Note: Team Holzman (5-12) Lost Head to Head to Team Hernandez and, thus, cannot pass them for 12th Seed.

Bottom 4 Seeds – Teams seeded #13 through #16 will NOT play on March 15.  They are already placed in the 1 Loss Bracket and will have a Game on Sunday March 22.

13. Team Holzman (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 5-12, Clinched #13 Seed

No matter what happens on Sunday Night they are going to be the #13 seed.. They lost head to head to Team Hernandez and, thus, can’t pass them for the #12 Seed.  They can rest their starters if they choose.. They’ll be off during the first week of the Playoffs and will start with 1 Loss.. They did so a year ago as well and ended up sending Teams home early..

14. Team Levitan (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Maroon) – 3-14

t-15. Team Elrod (Dr. Jacob D.D.S) & Team Shaffer (Muchacha Salsa Black) – 2-15

Here’s what we know about the last 3 Teams in.  They will all start with a Week off for the Playoffs. Then they’ll come back on March 22 with 1 Loss to their record.. But it’s a new season and truly anything can happen..

As for seeding among the 3..

Team Levitan will play Team Shaffer on Sunday Night. The winner will be the #14 Seed.. If Team Levitan wins they’ll have the spot via record.. If team Shaffer wins they’d tie Team Levitan’s record and win the head to head Tiebreaker..

Now for Team Elrod, to avoid the #16 Seed they’d need to Win AND for Team Levitan to defeat Team Shaffer.. Simply pulling even record wise with Team Levitan or Team Shaffer will not allow them to jump over as they lost head to head to both Teams..

The tiers have been established but there is still a lot to settle and the difference between the individual seeds DOES MATTER with Reseeding in certain rounds.

Have a great week and see you for the Conclusion of the Regular Season on Sunday Night!
