2014-15 Hoops – Week 7 (Nov. 30)

By
Updated: December 2, 2014

Sunday Night provided the perfect opportunity to come out and burn away some of those calories put on during the long holiday weekend!  The Games did not disappoint as we had several come down to the final moments, including the Accelerated Physical Therapy Game of the Week, which went to Overtime! More on that in a bit.  We’re now officially into the 2/3 of the Season and it’s time for Teams to make moves before Winter Break! There are 2 weeks left (Dec. 7 and Dec. 14) until we take a two week Winter Break surrounding Christmas and New Years (Dec. 21 and Dec. 28). Before we head into the Power Rankings, here’s a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights! OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 7-0, 1st in South Division

Simple way to describe their Game on Sunday Night — Team Lalez had the THREE top scorers in the League on Sunday Night… Dave Gershenzon and Brennan Keller went for 35 and Eytan Azaria went for 29… They look like they are getting stronger as the year rolls on.. Some start to crumble under the “undefeated banner” — Not the Defending Champs.  Keep it up guys.

1.9 Team Maione (Biaggi’s Blue) – 7-0, 1st in West Division

In last week’s Power Rankings they were bumped up to #1.9 from #2 and it was well deserved.. They are now 7-0 after defeating Rivals Team Bernkopf (who actually rosters not one, but two Maione bros.) on Sunday Night. Tellef Lundevall had 18 points and 13 boards.  Seemingly, Team Lalez’s run to start the Season is the best thing that could have happened for Team Maione.. They still have a target to shoot for, opposed to being the hunted by the entire League. It lets them continue to get better without any unnecessary pressure.. They will face one of, if not their biggest test to date in 2014 — Team Zimmerman awaits.

3. Team Harris (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – 6-1, 1st in North Division

The Winners of the Accelerated Physical Therapy Game of the Week come in at #3!  This may have been the best Game of the Year so far and for those who were unable to see the end really missed out.. Team Harris pulled one out in OT against Team Zimmerman in an epic, back and forth, thriller.  They traded big shot after big shot, in not just Regulation but in OT as well.. Dylan Richter had 24 points and they needed every last one of them.  He hit several go ahead shots in the Game’s final moments and it seemed as if he was going to do whatever was necessary to get the W.  These guys are really, really good.  Just need to be clear on that.  They are one 4pt L away to Team Lalez from being undefeated on the year.. Hard to have true statement Ws in November but Team Harris did just that on Sunday Night.

4. Team Horwitz (Esser Hayes Insurance Co.) – 5-2, 2nd in West Division

That sentence in Team Harris’ section just above — about it being difficult to get statement Ws in Nov, but they did just that.. Well,  that applies to Team Horwitz as well. This past Sunday, they beat Team Kozin and did so in very impressive fashion. Alan Tucci went for 22 points in this one — he’s one of the best scorers in the League — going to have to get used to his name appearing.. These guys are getting better as a group week after week..  They have everything you could possibly need. Everyone on the Team can make shots. They have tons of presence inside and can excel with either an up tempo or slowed down game.. We’ve talked about the tiers in the past few weeks and how they grabbed a spot in the top one.. Well, not only that.. They are a Championship caliber-Team.

5. Team Zimmerman (Biaggi’s Orange) – 5-2, 2nd in South Division

It’s a shame someone had to lose in that OT thriller on Sunday Night, but, unfortunately for Team Zimmerman it was them taking the L.  They fought Team Harris for every second of the Game and when the final buzzer (well the second final buzzer as it was in OT) sounded they were just one big bucket short.  Esto Vega took over down the stretch as he hit impressive shot after impressive shot.  These guys aren’t going to be rattled by this Loss.. They’ve bounced back before and will do so again.. Of course, most weeks you aren’t staring down the undefeated Runners-Up from a year ago – Team Maione.  Yes, that means back to back Acclerated Physical Therapy Games of the Week for Team Zimmerman.. That L last week will be nothing but a distant memory if they can take care of business next Sunday.  They have everything thing they need to get it done…

6. Team Apuli (iShot Mounts) – 4-3, 3rd in West Division

Very quietly (and confidently), Team Apuli has won 3 of their last 4 Games and are now looking at an above .500 record.  It’s been chronicled about how Captain Justin went through some tweaking in the off-season and it took a couple of weeks to get everyone playing as a cohesive unit.. They have certainly done just that though throughout November. This is a group who loves to get out and run.. If you let them play at their pace, it’s going to bite you..  They have earned this spot at #6 hot of the heels of a buzzer-beater W against Team Goldin on Sunday Night. Tyler Austin hit the Game Winner with 0.00 left on the clock!   Kyle Daniels had 18 and 9 on the glass.  They have an opportunity to put the entire League on notice this coming Sunday when they play undefeated Defending Champs – Team Lalez!

7.  Team Goldin (Cy Fredrics) – 4-3, tied for 1st in East Division

A week after gritting out a tough W against Team Schwartz they dropped a nail-biter to Team Apuli.  Now, a few things need to be set straight.. Team Goldin was without much of their core for this one.. Also, the buzzer-beater was insanely close.  It just as easily could have been called “No Good” and then Overtime may have provided a different narrative.. There’s no reason to panic.  These guys know that. They have Team Shamberg and then Team Hernandez to finish off 2014 before Winter Break.  If they take care of business like everyone knows they can.. They’ll hop up back into the top of the Power Rankings and feel great going into 2015.

8. Team Kozin (Theory) – 4-3, tied for 1st in East Division

They’ve dropped 2 in a row.  Yet, they still own a share of the lead in the East.  They too have missed a few of their guys the past couple of weeks due to the holiday etc.. They are going to be just fine. This is their lowest Rank of the Season but the odds of them staying here for long are not high whatsoever. They are an upper echelon Team in the League. Everyone knows that.  Josh Davis had 29 and 5 boards while Rashad Singleton had a double double with 13 and 13 boards.  Don’t start taking them lightly because of the Rankings, that would be so very unwise.

9. Team Levitan (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 3-4, 3rd in South Division

While many others are starting to take a dip after fast starts, Team Levitan has really found it’s footing in November. They’ve won 3 of their last 4 and it doesn’t seem like they plan on slowing down..  They are a Rookie squad who just needed a few weeks to get rolling and they’ve done just that.. Ryan Winiarski led the way with 16 points and 9 boards.  They have a desperate Team Schwartz squad next week — a group searching for their first W.  It won’t be easy but Team Levitan is knocking on .500’s door.

10. Team Holzman (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 2-5 , tied for 3rd in East Division

Back from the land of the Unranked is Team Holzman.   David Holmes had 21 and 9 in the Win and Danny Cowin also set the tone with 16 points and 13 on the glass.. They are a tough Team that gives everyone a good fight week after week.. As is the case with many of the Teams, their Games usually come down to how well they are shooting the rock.  On Sunday Night, they looked good from behind the arc and it changed the way they played in other facets of the Game.  They close 2014 with Team Hernandez and Team Shamberg..  A winning streak heading into Winter Break would do wonders for their 2015 confidence.. Remember this Team is used to late season surges…

11. Team Shaffer (Muchacha Salsa Black) – 2-5, 4th in South Division

Team Shaffer got back in the Winner’s Circle on Sunday Night and along with the W comes a spot in the Power Rankings!  They looked the best they’ve looked all season on Sunday Night. They were firing on all cylinders during the first half against Team Elrod.. They got up big and it seemed like they were going to coast into that dub.. However, Team Elrod made a valiant comeback and even took the lead late in the second half.  Team Shaffer managed to keep their composure and didn’t fold like so many would have after giving up a big lead.. They got fantastic guard play from their Captain Ian Shaffer who had 25 points and 6 dimes.. Todd Siegel also poured in 19 points.  If these guys can get rolling from behind the arc.. Look out.

12. Team Hernandez (Kelly Parker Home Collective) – 2-5, tied for 2nd in North Division

Losing 3 in a row is never a good feeling.. But the foundation is there for them to make a second half surge.. Most of these Guys only met just 7 weeks ago and it’s hard to come together under these circumstances with so much talent spread out throughout the League and flourish.. They have been in most of these Games and as time comes they’ll learn where to go in end of game situations.  Jake Bruce had 25 points and Christian James had 21.  Dave Altman, among the League’s Leaders in PPG, had 12 points on only 11 shots.  He’s gotta get the ball more inside for them to get Ws.. They’ll make it happen.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Bernkopf (Stems) – 2-5, tied for 3rd in South Division

Focusing on the positive here — they welcomed back Ricky Silverman on Sunday Night, who should help with some scoring punch.  They’ve now dropped 2 in a row and 5 of their last 6.. However, if you dig deeper into that stretch, you’ll see their schedule has been treacherous..  They also left a couple potential Ws on the table.. Plenty of time for them to regroup and right the ship in 2015.. Finishing 2014 on a strong note will certainly go a long way towards that.. They play Team Harris and Team Elrod to close out 2014.

Team Elrod (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 1-6, 4th in North Division

Team Shaffer just shot the ball better than them on Sunday Night… Those nights happen.  They were down the entire first half and for most of the second half before going on a tear and actually taking the lead for a brief moment. Team Shaffer was able to whether the storm though and ended up with the dub.  Phil Weisberg had 22 points and 11 boards.. Captain Elrod had 20 points as well.  These guys are better than their record indicates and that will eventually show through in the win/loss columns.

Team Schwartz (Greater Than) – 0-7, 4th in West Division

It seems like it’s been forever since their whole Team have been to the gym together.  Every week 1 or 2 guys are missing and it’s hard for them to find a true rhythm on offense because of it.  Max Kaplan kept up his fantastic 3pt shooting and scored 25 points on Sunday Night.  They just need to play together, all of them, for a couple of weeks — and the Wins will follow.

Team Shamberg (Muchacha Salsa Silver) – 2-5, tied for 2nd in North Division

Didn’t even seem like the same Team out there this week 🙂 .. They’ll be just fine going forward.

That’s it for this week. Have a great week and see you Sunday Night!
