2014 Chicago Co-Ed – Week 1 Volleyball (June 9)

Updated: June 12, 2014

The 2014 Chicago Co-Ed Summer All Sports Series League is underway! What a mouthful.. Each Week you can count on a Power Rankings article to be posted to allsportsseries.com that recaps the week that was and provides a bit of insight to what’s in store for the following week.  You can also count on a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights.  Also, feel free to POST BELOW w/ Disqus to let your feelings be heard (we ask just to keep the comments clean).

So this is how it works — Each Week, 8 of the 12 Teams will get Ranked in the Power Rankings while the other 8 Teams will remain unranked (and listed alphabetically) — with the goal of jumping into the Rankings the following week. A few things to keep in mind: 1) the Power Rankings are done mostly with a statistical feel and very little actual “insight.” 2) The Power Rankings have ZERO to do with the actual Standings and 3) For the first time ever.. All Sports Series has it’s own beat reporter!  Ben will be at the Games this Summer helping out with a big portion of the Power Rankings!

For the first week the two of us (Holden and Ben) will co-author the Power Rankings and then Ben will take the reigns going forward!  OK, let’s Rank ’em!

1. Team Bartlett (Sofia Live Lovely) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

There are many familiar faces in the Co-Ed League this Summer, but for all the Rookies out there.. THIS IS THE TEAM TO BEAT.  Team Bartlett is not only the lone All Sports Series Team to ever win Back2Back Championships but they are the only Team to have ever won the Co-Ed League.  They are the measuring stick for the Chicago Co-Ed League and don’t think they are content with their past glory.. They know that a 3Peat may never be reached by another Team and this group wants to cement their place in the history books.

In Week 1 they got off to a great start in their journey for three-straight, as they were 1 of 3 Teams to get the maximum 15 points allowed in the Standings. They won in in a clean sweep over 2012 Final4 participant – Team Isaacson.  Awesome start Champs!

2. Team Lazarov (Accelerated Rehab Centers) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Now that the Champs have been attended to.. It’s time for Challenger #1..  Team Lazarov are fresh-off a Runners-Up finish in 2013 at the hands of Team Bartlett… That was easily the most intense Co-Ed Game in the League’s now 3-year history.. To bring you up to speed.. The male portion of Team Lazarov is the group that makes up the Team Hakimian/Lalez Dynasty in the Chicago Men’s Leagues.  They know how to Win All Sports Series and have done so on 3 different occasions (2010 – First Ever All Sports Series, 2012 – Chicago Men’s League, 2013-14 First Ever All Sports Hoops)..  The female portion of the Team is as good as it gets as well. If there’s anyone who can dethrone Team Bartlett.. It’s Team Lazarov.. They kept pace with Team Barltett in Week 1, also grabbing for the maximum amount of points allowed. Going to be fun watching this play out.

3. Team Kirshner (Davanti Enoteca) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Team Kirshner has been around since the beginning of the Co-Ed League and they are ready to break out and have their big run in 2014!  They are a talented bunch led by Captain Jordan and know as well as anyone how to navigate through an All Sports Series Season. They surely started off 2014 on the right foot and will enter Week 2 tied for 1st place in the Standings with 2013’s finalists.  Team Kirshner will be among the first ever to compete in All Sports Series – Kickball in Week 2 as they take on Team Pivar.. Should be interesting..

4. Team Apuli (Manny’s Deli) – Currently tied for 4th with 12 points.

This is Team Apuli’s second go of it in the Co-Ed League. The guys on this crew have been playing for longer than that however and they are as veteran a Team as any.. They know the ins and outs of All Sports Series and are going to be around the top of the heap all Season long.  Captain Justin runs a tight ship and has his squad ready to go each and every week. As evidenced by their stellar Week 1 performance.  Also, take note that @mannysdeli and @AllSportsSeries social media accounts will be partnering to present a weekly #DELIvered award to the Player who gives something extra to their Team in the Spirit Dept.  Winners will receive FREE Sandwiches from Mannys!

5. Team Bemoras (RazorReef.com) – Currently tied for 4th with 12 points.

Team Bemoras is another squad from the Original 8 Co-Ed League Team. They’ve had their ups and downs over the past few seasons but after talking to Captain Bemo it really seems as if they have made the right alterations to get to the Championship this Summer.  They clearly are a strong Vball squad and the change in Playoff formatting (no more Hoops) should help them come August..  Don’t be surprised one bit if this group is atop the Power Rankings in a few weeks either. As for Week 1, they won 4 games and, thus, earned 12 points in the Standings.. They’ll have their chance to really put their stamp on the season next week as they take on the Champs, Team Bartlett, in Flag Football!

t-6. Team Albanese (Cy Fredrics) & Team Jacobs (The Karyn Collection) – Currently tied for 6th with 9 points.

Two new Teams this Summer come in tied at #6.. Which is fitting because the same analysis can be used for them really.. They both have past All Sports Series standouts surrounded by many Rookies.  They played each other in Week 1 and it allowed for them to get their feet wet without having to face any Veteran Teams.  Both of these squads have loads of talent on the Roster.  Call it a gut feeling but I think Team Albanese are going to be dynamite on the Hoops court (and likely everything).  The same goes for Team Jacobs.. Who I actually expect to end up being one of the top VBall squads around by the end of the Summer.  Veterans beware, there are new squads among us and they are ready to take over!

8. Team Pivar (Loree’s Closet) – Currently tied for 8th with 3 points.

Entering their second season in All Sports Series Team Pivar are looking to improve upon their stellar Rookie campaign. Their Captain Cori is as good a Captain as any (thanks!) and she has her crew ready to go.  They didn’t have as great of an opening night as they hoped for but they had a tough Week 1 matchup in Team Apuli.  Plenty of time for them to climb back up the Rankings and that can begin as early as next week in Kickball against Team Kirshner!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Fischer (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 8th with 3 points.

Co-Captain Blair played last year with the Team Graham.. These 3 points are her first in All Sports Series. Congrats! She has aligned herself with a new crew led by Co-Captain Lauren Evans and they are looking to make waves.  They are one of the youngest teams in the field, but they are certainly not underdogs.. Tons of talent on this group and once they have time to gel a bit, Team Fischer will be a heavy-hitter in the Co-Ed League.

Team Isaacson (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – Currently tied for 11th with 0 points.

Quick aside, #WeMissYouHarry was trending worldwide  in the All Sports Series universe on Monday Night.  Team Isaacson began as Team Leibow in 2012 and were the Runners-Up in this League’s first year.  In 2013, they took a small step back with an earlier Playoff exit in 2013.  They are back looking for REDEMPTION, however w/o their fearless leader from past seasons.  Captain Ashley has big shoes to fill but if anyone can, its certainly her!  Side note: W/o Harry, no one wore a suit to the Captains Meeting.. Step it up everyone.  This crew has tons of experience to fall back on and a tough Week 1 matchup is going to do anything but rattle them..

Team Mazurek (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently tied for 11th with 0 points.

Many will remember Team Mazurek from 2013 as they were one of the strongest Teams in the League.  Captain Allison is back but with a new crew.  Like many others it will take a couple weeks to work the kinks out but knowing their Captain, expect that to happen sooner rather than later. Lining up against Team Lazarov in volleyball is about as tough of a Week 1 as you can ask for.. They are going to be in the Rankings in no time..

Team Silberstein (Trifecta Grill) – Currently tied for 8th with 3 points.

All Sports Series historians are probably thinking.. Oh Team Silberstein is back! Well they are! Sort of.. Former Captain of Team Silberstein (big sister Stef) joined forces in a Miami Heat ring-chase with Team Bartlett in 2013. Congrats on the Crown.. However, little sister Amy, has brought this Franchise back to life and with a totally new crew!  Her group seems like a really fun squad, and most of the time that equates to success on the All Sports Series courts/fields.. We’re already crossing our fingers for a potential Bartlett/Silberstein Playoff match-up in August!

That’s it from us this week. Have a great weekend and see you Monday Night!
