2014 Chicago Co-Ed – Week 3 Hoops/16″ Softball (June 23)

Updated: June 27, 2014

Week 3 provided some excellent, closely contested Hoops games and for the second consecutive week caused our outdoor Games to be postponed. Those Games will be made out later in the Summer.   Before we get to the Rankings, here’s a link to the Weekly Video Highlights!  OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Lazarov (Accelerated Rehab Centers) – Currently in 1st with 35 points.

Team Lazarov earned the top spot this week after their impressive hoops W against Team Bemoras this week. They sit on top of the Standings as well with 35 points looking very good moving into the rest of the regular season. As usual, Eytan Azaria was a dominant force this week under the boards while Aaron Epstein and Ben Lazarov found each other often with some  great looks. Tara Ferguson showed the most hustle on the court, setting up a lot of opportunities and bringing in 9 points herself. Nothing seems to be stopping this crew! The 2013 Runners-Up have one goal this Summer.. Dethrone Team Bartlett.

2. Team Kirshner (Davanti Enoteca) – Currently in 2nd with 30 points.

Team Kirshner didn’t get a chance to show their stuff this week due to the weather, but they still move up a spot to #2 this week. With a dominant volleyball performance in Week 1 and a strategic performance in their Week 2 kickball game they’ve shown chemistry on the court that just hasn’t been matched in the League so far this season. Welcome to the Top 2.

3. Team Albanese (Cy Fredrics) – Currently in 3rd with 29 points.

It’s still too early to tell where this season is headed for any of the Teams involved.. That being said, Team Albanese has certainly put their stamp on the League in their first few weeks. Taking 9 points from Vball coupled with a Hoops win, this squad has shown its skill and strength in different sports.. Which of course is the true key to advancing in the Playoffs. This week they were led by strong play from Chad McClintock and Tara Steinbauer, while Matt Kuhn scored in 23 points, the second highest total of the week.

4. Team Fischer (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently in 4th with 23 points.

This group is just a lot of fun to watch. They are the youngest Team in the League and their energy is on full display every week. Monday night they did what many (many many) have not been able to do and knocked off Team Bartlett in a hotly contested Hoops affair.  Jack Ransdell put in 19 points, landing in the top 5 scorers of the Week, while Briana Collier and Lauren Evans backed him up with scrappy defense and double-digit nights as well. It was a tight game where the Defending Champs Team Bartlett didn’t back down. Week 3 Hoops will be the night people come back to and say, “that’s the night the young pups knocked off the big dawg.”

5. Team Bartlett (Sofia Live Lovely) – Currently tied for 5th with 15 points.

It wasn’t clear who would win Monday night’s matchup until the final seconds of the game. Team Bartlett got off to a slow start, struggling to match the rebounding prowess of Team Fischer. They began to pick up steam, as they so often do, with tough defense and smart, cohesive passing. It didn’t hurt that Jon Nickow was en fuego with seven 3-pointers in the second half. SEVEN! The man couldn’t be stopped. He kept their team in the game with bucket after bucket. Although they fell just a few points short of the win, Team Bartlett is the not the type to get down from one L.. Why would they? They are the Back2Back Champs.

6. Team Mazurek (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently tied for 5th with 15 points.

They get to revel in their Kickball Win for an extra week since Softball was postponed.. These guys could certainly be in the Top 3-4 by this time next week.

7. Team Silberstein (Trifecta Grill) – Currently in 9th with 10.5 points.

Off this Week with the weather. Have it on good authority they are going to be beasts on the dodgeball court.

t-8. Team Apuli (Manny’s Deli) & Team Bemoras (RazorReef.com)  – Currently tied for 7th with 12 points.

This week’s Hoops Game was quite a contest between Tean Apuli and Team Albanese. It was a hard fought game where both Teams showed tremendous grit. It could have gone either way and these guys just came up a bit short when the dust settled. Led by captain Justin Apuli with 14 points and backed up by Nick Glass with 10 of his own they were able to find a lot of opportunities throughout the game. Captain Apuli’s crew is one to keep your eye on.. Dodgeball should be a good bounce back for them.

Team Bemoras put up quite a fight this week, showing aggressive defense and hustling around the court. Sometimes you are just outsized.. And they were. Team Lazarov in Hoops is, well it’s bad luck..  Graham Conatser was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the court and kept them in the game for the entire 44 minutes. It’s still early in the regular season and with 12 points from their great showing in volleyball, Team Bemoras still has plenty of time to grab a top spot come August.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical)

Team Isaacson (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – Currently in 11th with 7.5 points.

They were another group rained out.. Apparently there was a conference call with ex-Captain (still GM) Harry Leibow this week. Some called his speech “motivating” while others felt he should wait til the playoffs before breaking out the win it for the gipper type tactics. We’ll see how these guys respond in Week 4 dodgeball. My guess is.. They’ll do just fine.

Team Jacobs (The Karyn Collection) – Currently in 10th with 9 points.

There’s still a long way to go in this season, and a narrow kickball loss to Team Mazurek in week 2 is no way to gauge the talent on this team. Team Jacobs put up a fight in an evenly matched 3-3 volleyball match during Week 1 with #3 Team Albanese and if that’s any indication they’ll be a threat moving forward.

Team Pivar (Loree’s Closet) – Currently in 12th with 3 points.

These guys are going to be eager to get back out their and turn their season around. Their going to get into the Rankings soon enough!

That’s it for us. Have a great weekend!
