2014 Chicago Co-Ed – Week 6 Hoops/Kickball (July 14)

By
Updated: July 18, 2014

The entire Co-Ed League was indoors on Monday Night (of course.. as the sun was finally shining) so the entire League was in action!  Kickball produced some memorable moments and we had a few fantastic Hoops finishes…  We have Rain Make-Ups this Saturday (July 19).. Those Games in addition to next Monday Night’s normal schedule (and rain make-up double headers) are all that stands between us and the best time of the year.. The Playoffs.

Here’s your first look at the 2014 Chicago Co-Ed Playoff Bracket.  For the Rookie squads out there.. The Playoffs are a single-elimination tourney unlike any other.  Over those few weeks, the sport will change numerous times and everyone’s journey will come to an end.. Except for 1 of course. Whoever is the final Team left standing will have earned it, running through a gauntlet of either 3 or 4 Games.. So, are you ready?

Quickly, here’s a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video which has many awesome plays from Week 6! Also, have you VOTED for the ALL-STAR Team?? Do so HERE!

Before we get to the Playoffs, there’s still a TON left to be done.  Each Team has 2 Games left (softball and football) so there’s still many shake-ups to come prior to locking in the Playoff Seeding.. OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Lazarov (Accelerated Rehab Centers) – Currently tied for 1st with 80 points.

Absolutely nothing has been able to stand in the way of this force so far. But this week was the closest any have come, with Team Fischer right on their tails in a narrow 5-4 kickball win. And even closer on their tails is Team Kirshner who finally narrowed the gap and caught up to Team Lazarov in the Standings this week. We’re all waiting on pins and needles to see who the #1 Seed is going to be.. All will be decided by this time next week!

2. Team Kirshner (Davanti Enoteca) – Currently tied for 1st with 80 points.

Team Kirshner is a powerhouse in the Co-Ed League that picks up more and more steam every week.. They were the #2 Seed in the 2013 Playoffs and look to improve upon that this year.. Team Kirshner got held to a close game by Team Jacobs before taking the W, and certainly got Team Lazarov’s attention along with the rest of us watching. Capt. Jordan played great on Monday night as well.

3. Team Albanese (Cy Fredrics) – Currently in 3rd with 59 points.

Team Albanese’s Game against Team Bemoras this week showed just how tricky kickball can be in this League and the challenge it can present to most teams. The defense stayed ahead of the offense, as it was a low scoring game decided by just one run, but just like they always do, Team Albanese did what they needed to do.

4. Team Fischer (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently in 4th with 53 points.

Team Fischer is the new kid on the block… But they aren’t happy just being invited to the party.. They want to take it over. Every week they show up playing with sheer determination.. This week they came up just short in a 5-4 loss to #1 Team Lazarov. They were on a total tear before this week and in many ways their momentum should not lessen.. They just gave the #1 Team everything they could handle.. Just to make it clear — they can win the Championship.  They are in the handful of favorites. Young, old, big, small.. They are here to take the Crown.

5. Team Bartlett (Sofia Live Lovely) – Currently in 5th with 48 points.

Back to the Winner’s Circle are the Back2Back Champs of the Co-Ed Universe – Team Bartlett.  They showed their power and strength off on many occasions Monday Night… They really were fantastic on the Kickball court… I think some have let them fly a bit under the radar which seems impossible considering the history.. Let me wake everyone up.. They won the Championship as the #7 seed last year.. The Regular Season is just a tune-up.. They are simply just getting ready and maneuvering for their run at a 3peat.

6. Team Mazurek (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently in 6th with 41 points.

Team Mazurek picked up the biggest Win of the night in deafeating Team Isaacson in Hoops. They’re still right in the middle of the pack and historically have been strongest in the outdoor sports. These guys are going to be screaming up the Rankings to close out the Season. They’re one of so many teams with the ability to pick up momentum at any moment, and with one or two more games like Monday night’s they could make themselves THE team to beat.

7. Team Bemoras (RazorReef.com) – Currently in 7th with 39 points.

Team Bemoras cooled off from their hot streak this week with a tense Kickball Game where every run was vital. The kickball strategy is a tough one to pick up quickly, and neither team could break past the tough defensive walls that got put up. They dropped it 2-1 and really played well enough to win. Matt Zohn pitched a gem on the mound and made one of the more impressive plays on the night lunging to his right to dive and catch a ball before it struck the ground and firing to 1st for a double play.  The entire gym was chanting “Zohn! Zohn! Zohn!”  — or at least it seemed that way..

8. Team Pivar (Loree’s Closet) – Currently in 9th with 26 points.

Team Pivar came out on top of the week’s closest Hoops matchup between them and Team Silberstein. This is their first week in the Rankings this Season and it is well deserved. They’ve gotten points in back to back weeks and are coming alive at the right time. Some feared they were suffering from a sophomore slump in 2014, but they were just waiting to pick their spots and to make an impact on the Season. Their time is now. Look out!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Manny’s Deli) – Currently in 11th with 21 points.

There’s still a long way to go and Apuli has a lot more in their bag of tricks to show us. They’ve played hard every week and excelled on the basketball court…This group is full of All Sports Series vets and a lower seed in the Opening Rounds of the Playoffs are not going to stop them from thinking they can get Ws..  They are still a tough out.

Team Isaacson (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – Currently in 10th with 22.5 points.

Team Isaacson has played through some tough tests this Season, so all they have to do now is pick themselves up and brush themselves off. They lost former Captain Harrison Leibow to the great north woods before the Summer began and it has been hard for them to find their emotional leaders elsewhere. They have the capacity to beat any team that they play. Also, #HarryPlayoffs?  was trending on Twitter last Monday Night.

Team Jacobs (The Karyn Collection) – Currently in 8th with 30 points.

This week they played one of the top crews – Team Kirshner – in one of their best sports and couldn’t stand up to the heat. But this thing’s far from over.. They still have Softball and Flag Football to try and climb into the top half of the League before the Regular Season comes to a close. They certainly have what it takes to get it done.

Team Silberstein (Trifecta Grill) – Currently in 12th with 10.5 points.

Team Silberstein just needs to catch their lucky break. And despite all the effort they poured in this week they came up just short, falling 48-44 to Team Pivar in a real heartbreaker. But nothing’s decided. And while most other teams are getting comfortable, Team Silberstein is getting ready to make moves that other teams better watch out for.. They are a sleeping giant and if they awake during the Playoffs, they could be that Cinderella Team no one wants to face.

That’s it for us! Cross your fingers for sunshine and see Saturday/Monday!

That’s it from us. See ya soon!
