2014 Chicago Men’s – Week 1 Hoops/Floor Hockey (June 9)

Updated: June 12, 2014

The 2014 Chicago Men’s Summer All Sports Series League is underway! What a mouthful.. Each Week you can count on a Power Rankings article to be posted to allsportsseries.com that recaps the week that was and provides a bit of insight to what’s in store for the following week.  You can also count on a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights.  Also, feel free to POST BELOW w/ Disqus to let your feelings be heard (we ask just to keep the comments clean).

So this is how it works — Each Week 16 of the 24 Teams will get Ranked in the Power Rankings while the other 8 Teams will remain unranked (and listed alphabetically) — with the goal of jumping into the Rankings the following week. A few things to keep in mind: 1) the Power Rankings are done mostly with a statistical feel and very little actual “insight.” 2) The Power Rankings have ZERO to do with the actual Standings and 3) For the first time ever.. All Sports Series has it’s own beat reporter!  Ben will be at the Games this Summer helping out with a big portion of the Power Rankings!

For the first week the two of us (Holden and Ben) will co-author the Power Rankings and then Ben will take the reigns going forward!  OK, let’s Rank ’em!

1. Team Maione (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Team Maione are the reigning, defending Champions of the Chicago Men’s League world.  These guys won it ALL in 2013 and are back ready to become the first Men’s Team to ever Repeat in All Sports Series history.   Don’t think they are going to be complacent either this Summer.. The bulk of them are coming off a heart-breaking Runners-Up finish in the All Sports Hoops League which wrapped up in April.  They still have that sour taste in their mouths and they are looking to take it out on this remarkably deep field over the course of the Summer!

…and that they did on Monday Night.. They scored an unthinkable 103 points in thieir Hoops Game.. Easily the most by any other Team.  If you can’t tell from these past 5 sentences.. The Defending Champs are REALLY GOOD.  Deal with it.

2. Team Hadelman (Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co.) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Team Hadelman is LOADED.  These guys finished in 2nd in 2013 and Captain Hadelman has done everything imaginable in the off-season to work the waiver wire and make sure his squad is hoisting the crown in 2014.  It usually takes a bit of time for Teams to get their legs under them in their first go of it in All Sports Series (more on that below) but these guys in their first year together really took the League by storm last year.. They were one softball game away from being Champions.  Their heartbreak continued (for many of them) into fall and spring as much of their core had an unbelievable run in the All Sports Hoops League.  They came up just a few points short in an unbelievable playoff battle (with both Team Maione and Team Lalez (Hakimian in All Sports Series).. This Team has firmly cemented themselves as prime-time players in All Sports Series and it’s only a matter of time before they fulfill their destiny..

On Monday Night they got off to a great-start (no matter what their Captain will tell you), taking down the always top-notch Team Watts in Hoops.  These guys are only going to get better as they learn how to work in their new pieces.. Which is really scary for everyone else.

3. Team Bernkopf (Accelerated Rehab Centers) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

One of the Original-12.  Team Bernkopf has had many different names over the years (Bulwa, Harmelech, Maione to name a few) but one thing has remained consistent.. Their talented core.  They were among the very first All Sports Series back in 2010 and have been a force ever since. Many of them have a Suburbs Crown in their mantle (2011) but all of them are seeking that elusive first Chicago League Crown.  2014 has the deepest field to date, but this might be the best version of Team Bernkopf we’ve seen..

They certainly started 2014 off with a Bang..Winning a 3OT thriller with Team Hakimian in the Season Opener on Monday Night.  Want to welcome Alex Simmons to the League has he put in 24 points.. Which Team Bernkopf needed every single one of to get the W.  For whatever reason, some have been sleeping on these guys for the past 12 months.. They’ve gone through some injuries and a bit of a roster haul but their Monday Night performance should wake everyone up in regards to them..

4. Team Schulte (PPM Apartments) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

The first newcomers to appear in the Power Rankings.. However, newcomers they are not.. For the Chicago Men’s League vets out there Team Schulte is competing in their first Chicago League but in the Fall of 2013 many of them competed in the first ever Madison League.  These guys are young, hungry and talented..  Case in point – Week 1’s Floor Hockey W vs. Team Wilneff.

Just to put the W in perspective.. Team Wilneff has members of the 2013 College/Prep Champs. Team Wilneff is ALWAYS a great crew.. deep and athletic.. Team Schulte put the hurt on them.. Big Time.. Gordie Campbell was the high goal scorer on the night with a cool hat trick to help lead the way in the 10-1 route.  Doubt any team will top 10 goals this season.  Welcome to the Big League guys.

5. Team Holzman (Trifecta Grill) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Team Holzman has undergone a rebrand for this Summer and it already is paying off!  Captain Andrew is an All Sports Series vet and has Captained many Teams.. I think he’ll echo this sentiment.. The crew he has assembled are both young and old, but easily the best lineup of talent he’s assembled.  These guys can play.  They have everything you need to flourish in All Sports Series. They have skill, veteran leadership, size speed and people who have won it before.. Like Tyler “has been a Captain himself” Max who’s Team won the first ever Madison League Crown this past Fall.  For those that weren’t paying attention to Team Holzman before.. you better start.. They launched all night long in the season opener and looked like a force to be reckoned with on the Hoops Court.  Team Holzman took the strength of his All Sports Hoops Team and added a bit more flare and pizzazz.. They are going to be fun to watch.. For those that didn’t play in the Hoops League — Name to watch — EJ Silver –guy put up 29 on Monday Night to the lead the League.

6. Team Sharrin (Michael’s Events) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

At #6 we have our first true Rookie squad.. Not bad for Week 1.. They looked impressive winning what could end up being the best Floor Hockey Game we’ll see all season over Team Kaplan.  These guys get to spend at least one week tied atop the Standings which is exactly where you want to be after their 5-4 W.. They seemed poised for a serious run in this thing.  Welcome gentlemen..

7. Team Shlofrock (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

Team Shlofrock is a combo of many different past All Sports Series Teams.. From the looks of it Monday Night, they got the combo just right.. These guys are deep and will be in every game this Summer.  Truly think seed could matter (yes, so early for Playoff talk) for these guys and if they wind up with a high seed a deep run in August is certainly doable..  They too will end Week 1 tied for 1st after knocking off a familiar foe in Team Harris in Floor Hockey 5-4 on Monday Night.  These two Teams put up a heck of a fight, with neither giving an inch on either end of the court. The ball didn’t have time to settle at any point of the game as both Team Shlofrock and Team Harris pushed the pace early and often.  Team Shlofrock is a group that will gain more and more confidence with each passing week..  If they are allowed to stay at or near the top it might not bode so well for the rest of the pack.

8. Team Zimmerman (Duke Cannon Supply Co.) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Being a Captain in All Sports Series is a skill.  It’s not necessarily a tangible one (i.e. a  jumper) but crafting a group and knowing where/when/how to go out and get the right piece to mesh with what you already have.. With that preface, Captain Jack is entering his 3rd run as a Captain (2013 Chicago Men’s League and All Sports Hoops).. Captain Jack is really finding his groove in the Captaining department. They looked great on Monday Night, in a sport that they did not excel in last season and that was without one or two very talented hoopers. They took down the always gamely Team Riskin group and did so convincingly.  These guys are going to move up in the Rankings before moving down. Book it.

9. Team Hakimian (the MacMentor) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

For those reading their first Power Rankings article allow some explaining..  You might be thinking, “wait why is a Team that lost on Monday, ranked ahead of several Teams that won?” Here’s your answer:  Team Hakimian is the Dynasty, the Gold Standard, THE Franchise that has set itself apart from the rest in All Sports Series history..  Let me rattle off their accomplishments quickly.. Champions of the first ever All Sports Series League in 2010.. Followed up with a 2nd in 2011, Won it again in 2012.. Final4 last Summer and then this past April they took home the first All Sports Hoops Crown.  Frankly, they probably should be ranked higher than this.  These guys will be in the playoffs, losses in Week 1 mean very little in August.  Let me tell you this, every Team that has played in All Sports Series goes and checks for these guys on their Schedules.. If you don’t know.. Now you know..

10. Team Fallows (Teplitz & Bell Law) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Team Fallows is “new”.. But by name only.. These guys are a group of Vets flying under the new Team Fallows banner.  These guys are talented and show up ready to play every week.  They are among some of the original groups in All Sports Series and because of that they have many Rivals when they look up and down the Chicago Men’s League field.. They know they are going to get everyone’s best and that’s just the way they like it.. On Monday Night they got a big hand from Jason Kozin who put home 19 points on the night to lead the crew in scoring. If they can get this consistently to go along with their solid D, they really are going to be in-store for a big year.

11. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake Jeep) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

These guys have been in All Sports Series since 2011.  They’ve had many Teams over the various All Sports Series Leagues including being the guys who make up the only Back2Back Champs in All Sports Series history — Team Bartlett — of the Chicago Co-Ed League. They’ve had a lot of success in the Men’s League as well, including finishing past seasons with a Top2 seed.. However, it has not translated to a long Playoff run just yet. Captain Andy has tweaked a couple of things for this Summer’s run.. These guys have tons of chemistry and that should help them, especially early in the Season when others are figuring out their roles.. I think a strong Regular Season is in their grasp and then match-ups will dictate their Playoff success.

12. Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports Marketing) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Original 12 squad – check.  Perennial Playoff Team – check.  Camp Ojibwa Warriors – check.  Consistency on the Hoops Court – Check.. Well for Week 1 at least.  Bringing you up to speed on Team Kornblatt — Year in and year out they are fantastic on the softball diamond, a force on the football field, frisky on the hockey court and are among the favorites in the volleyball tourney.. If you haven’t noticed already.. Hoops was not listed above.. Basically, they lack that punch on the Offensive end and their Playoff runs have been cut short year after year because of it.

Monday Night was a low scoring affair.. The type of Game Team Kornblatt can excel in.. They made it so that each bucket with Team Jasinski was a big swing.. These guys can win and will win “grind-it-out” games. Basically, The same will ring true in 2014 as in 2010-13.. If they can’t get past the Hoops Rounds of the Playoffs they may just be the favorites.. There have been some tweaks to the Roster and they might just have the right mix this year.  Stay tuned.

13. Team Mason (Alternative) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Some Team had to be the lowest Ranked Team out of the Winners on Monday Night.. Full Disclosure, my (Holden) roommates are on this Team.. So at least you know that no favorites are being played here.. These guys have played under the Team Greenebrg crew the past couple of years and Elliot himself is along for this ride too.. A bit of a change in management and some whole-sale changes with the roster have them looking for their best finish yet.. One of those key additions was Sam Winegardner who had an amazing first-half and really set the tempo for the Game on behalf of Team Mason.  If these guys can put another W on their mantle next week they are already going to be in good shape for the Playoffs.

14. Team Watts (West Coast Shaving) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

Can’t win or lose a Championship in the first week of the Season.  Make no mistake about it.. This Team is Championship or bust. It’s been that way for Team Watts since his crew sprung onto the All Sports Series scene in 2011.  He has the “IT factor” when it comes to GMing and this crew, even with a Loss in Week 1, might be the most-well rounded yet.. They’ve added pieces that will help in sports where they’ve usually struggled (for instance volleyball).. They also, WITHOUT A DOUBT, are better than the 14th Team in this League. It’s just a fact.  So don’t let the Week 1 Ranking fool you.. They ran into a buzzsaw in Team Hadelman in Week 1 and played without several of their best Hoopers.  They routinely wind-up with a high seed and 2014 will be no different.  The only question is.. Will they finally win the big one?

15. Team Harris (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Purple) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

Captain Brian is no stranger to the Chicago Men’s League… He is actually a key departure for Team Cohen listed above.. He has brought his Championship winning crew from the first ever Champaign League downtown this Summer and they are ready to make a name for themselves where the big boys play.  They might not be a Hockey powerhouse, even though they could have gotten a W… The good news for them.. Floor Hockey is now in the past.. Every sport left will be a “strength” for these guys.  They are well-rounded, deep, and more importantly now how to win Championships.  Expect these guys to enter the Top 10 before too long.

16. Team Wilneff (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

Team Wilneff is comprised of several All Sports Series – Suburbs League vets.. Including a few past Champions.  They are new to the Chicago Men’s League, but before you say.. “It’s just different down here, they won’t hang…” Let me tell you.. You are wrong.  These guys are going to be just fine.  Clearly, their first ever Floor Hockey game didn’t go so well.. But just like Team Harris, it’s in the past and they won’t have to see that sport again until 2015.  These guys are feisty, young, and hungry to prove themselves down here.. After years of hearing how different the competition level is..  Captain Brian is another frequenter of the Waiver Wire and pulls the necessary strings to put his Team in the right spots.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Altman (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

Another true Rookie squad.. These guys got their first taste of All Sports Series on Monday Night and ran into the always solid Team Fallows in the process.  This group has several solid athletes and while it might take a few weeks to find their various roles it seems like everyone better watch out when July rolls around.

Team Daar (popchips) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

Team Daar has merged with last season’s Team Apuli and I think both crews will benefit from the partnership. They met a goliath on the Hoops Court on Monday Night in the defending champs – Team Maione, so pay that score no mind.. These guys will be heard from as the season progresses and will probably knock off a top team or two in the process.

Team Free Agent (Worth Sports) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

Monday Night was when most of these guys met each other — forget even suiting up in a competitive sport situation together. It might take a few weeks for them to gel, but they have plenty of time and the best part of All Sports Series is that even if Hoops ends up not being “their thing”.. Some other sport will be.. Shoutout to Eric Hernandez and Ronnie Ballard who both went for over 20 points on the night.

Team Horwitz (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

They grabbed a Top-5 Seed a year ago and in many ways they have improved upon their roster.  Week 1 didn’t go as planned but more importantly Captain Wiz is tying the knot this weekend (and he had 20 points this past Monday.) Congrats! I hear you have a handsome wedding officiator 🙂

Team Jasinski (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Silver) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

As several other Teams learned this past week, getting your legs under you in All Sports Series often takes a bit of time.  These guys didn’t start the way they had hoped but they have something that no experience can change — size. They are going to get better and likely quickly. Look for them to rise.

Team Kaplan (SLA Insurance Black) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

Team Kaplan suffered a heartbreaking loss in what possibly could go down as the best Floor Hockey Game all season to Team Sharrin.. Captain Kaplan got his feet wet in the All Sports Series realm during the Champaign League last fall and has recruited quite the group of athletes.  They are some of the youngest guys in the League and my guess is that some experienced Teams are going to take them lightly.. This is going to lead to great things for Team Kaplan this Season. Just watch.

Team Mentgen (Paws-N-Effect) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

These guys hail from the Atomic Transport office, so teamwork will not be an issue early in the season like it is for most Rookie Teams. These guys are a big strong group and they will certainly do damage as the season moves along.  Scheduling of course matters in All Sports Series and them running into the veteran group of Team Cohen did them no favors in Week 1.  These guys are going to improve and should jump into the Rankings in no time!

Team Riskin (SLA Insurance Navy) – Currently tied for 13th with 0 points.

The last team listed (again, alphabetically.. not Ranking) is certainly not least..  Simply put Team Riskin has been in All Sports Series for years and they are a tough, tough squad.. They were ousted last season in a TIGHT OT- Hoops Game to an eventual Final4 Team.. They are among the top Teams in this thing and there’s plenty of time to make their mark.. Captain Matt might be both the biggest and nicest guy in the League.  It would be shocking if they aren’t in the Rankings shortly.  They will be..

That’s it for us. Have a great weekend.  See you Monday Night!
