2014 Chicago Men’s – Week 5 Hoops/Floor Hockey/Flag Football/Softball (July 7)

Updated: July 10, 2014

We did it!  They said it couldn’t be done.. They said “you are crazy..”  But Monday Night we proved the doubters wrong.  On Monday Night we actually played a full slate of outdoor games for the first-time this Summer! Mother-Nature finally cooperated and there were great games all night long.  Before the Rankings, here’s a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights!  OK let’s Rank ’em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Maione (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently tied for 3rd with 65 points.

For weeks we watched the Defending Champs dominate game after game on the Hoops court and wondered if anything was going to stop them. And so far, the answer is no. Although Team Bernkopf fought hard in what proved to be one of the more intense Floor Hockey Games of the Season.. Johnny Lindquist, his hat trick and Team Maione still walked away with a 9-6 win Monday Night proving that they’re more than one-hit wonders and still THE Team to beat. Last note, in terms of the Standings.. Team Maione might not be in first but they are undefeated and if you factor in their potential points remaining they are still one of the only Teams left who control their own destiny for the #1 Seed.

2. Team Horwitz (Benjamin & Shapiro) – Currently in 1st with 90 points.

After spending last week locked in a battle for 1st Place in the Standings, Team Horwitz pulled away with a big win this week!  With a 27-6 win over Team Daar they’ve positioned themselves alone at the top of the mountain. QB1 Jeff Nault hit different weapons all throughout the game including Wide Receiver extraordinaire Max Guggenheim.  Team Horwitz has sort of flown under the radar for much of this Season which is rare for a Team who sits in first.  They are transforming into becoming the hunted rather than the hunters.. It’s a much harder to spot to stay in.. We’ll see if they have what it takes..

3. Team Zimmerman (Duke Cannon Supply Co.) – Currently in 2nd with 80 points.

Softball is usually a great indication of a Roster’s depth. It takes a lot of talent across a whole group.. Team Zimmerman has shown week after week their whole squad can make plays happen.. It was on display again Monday Night with a resounding 10-0 Win over Team Watts.  Ross Neuman was electric on the mound. The kid just has “it” when he’s out there on the bump.  Just makes you think if anyone could touch these guys on the diamond if Team Zimmerman can get to the Final4.  They along with Team Maione and one other Team still control their own destiny in terms of the #1 Seed.

4. Team Holzman (Trifecta Grill) – Currently tied for 3rd in 65 points.

Team Holzman was back in the Game this week (rained out last week) and they looked as if the week off really got the fired up.. Team Holzman was able to come out on top of their Floor Hockey matchup with a 12-2 win, pushing them even higher and leaving them as one of our very few undefeated Teams left in the Chicago Men’s League. Tyler Max helped the scoring party with a cool hat trick.  These guys along with Team Maione and Team Zimmerman control their own fate in terms of the #1 Seed.  Finishing #1 is not just cool (you get a sweet prize — either a Trolley from Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. or Wrigley View Rooftop Tix for the Cubs) but it’s big in terms of the Playoffs.  The Teams who finish #16 and #17 have an opening round game with the winner having to play the top seed.  That means the #1 Seed will get to battle fresh on Night 1 of the Playoffs and their opponents will not be. HUGE.

5. Team Hadelman (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – Currently tied for 7th with 50 points.

Team Hadelman has shown their stripes across a couple different sports so far this Summer and last year’s Runners-Up will have no problem picking themselves up after this week’s tough Softball Loss to Team Mason.  These guys are going to likely finish near the top of the Standings (similar to last year) and will be setup just fine for their run to the Crown.  There’s something to be said for getting a bad-week out of the system in July and re-focusing things before the stretch run.  It’s very rare that Teams go Undefeated in All Sports Series and since you can’t win the Championship before August, better to be done with it now. These guys are fine.  Wouldn’t want to play them the rest of the way really..

6. Team Shlofrock (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 7th with 50 points.

Team Shlofrock had last week off due to rain delays and if this week is any evidence, they put the down time to good use, bouncing back with a strong Win over Team Schulte in OT Hoops.  This was one of the best Hoops Games that have been played all Summer. Exciting to last seconds (twice). These guys are done with their Regular Season Hoops Games and we’re excited to see what they can show us off the court.. They are a deep group which should do wonders for them the next few weeks.  Confidence is growing and growing as well.

7. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake Jeep) – Currently in 6th with 55 points.

Team Cohen came up clutch  this week, leaping ahead in the Power Rankings after a battle with Rivals Team Kornblatt out on the football field. Last week they scrapped for an OT hoops win over Rivals Team Fallows and this week they proved that they’ve got a lot of fight left in them.. Their Flag Football showdown was interesting until the final play.. They squandered a late lead and allowed Team Kornblatt to score in the Game’s final seconds.. It all came down to a point-after conversion for the tie but Team Cohen denied the attempt and took the W 19-18.  It’s not only big for their confidence/momentum but it does wonders for their Playoff hopes.. These Guys have their eyes on the prize and with each win they get that much closer.  Could be a potential Cinderella come August.

8. Team Bernkopf (Accelerated Rehab Centers) – Currently tied for 10th with 45 points.

Team Bernkopf has a knack for winding up in close games week after week. With a couple narrow Hoops Wins early on they put their stamp on the Season and this week they played a high-scoring Floor Hockey game against Rivals and #1 Team Maione that ended in a 9-6 loss. These guys excel in football/softball and still have both of those sports remaining on the Schedule..  They are likely going to finish the Season somewhere near the Top 5.. The question becomes can they string enough Ws together at the end of the season to be the ones left standing.. We think so.

9. Team Kornblatt (VIP Sports) – Currently tied for 3rd with 65 points.

Team Kornblatt has shown themselves to be one of the scrappiest squads in the history of All Sports Series.  They are a squad full of grinders and lay it all out there week after week. They run “hot” most weeks and that is because they truly want it as bad as any Team out there. You’ll notice that most weeks they are playing against “Rivals” and that is because throughout the years these guys have played just about everyone and pushed them all to the limit.  While they do show a ton of passion on the field they have a long history of not allowing themselves to get too high after big Ws nor too low after hard Ls.  They dropped a heartbreaker on Monday Night falling 19-18  to Rivals Team Cohen on the football field.  As was said earlier, they’ll shake this off as this is nothing new for them.. They are in tight games week in and week out, sometimes the ball bounces your way..  In terms of the Standings they’re still ahead of most, but Team Cohen and other competitors are hot on their heels and ready to grab their spot.  One of the major storylines going to into the Playoffs is who will these Team line-up across in the Opening Hoops round.. Could have Championship implications..

10. Team Riskin (SLA Insurance Navy) – Currently tied for 10th with 45 points.

Talk about a rebound. Not a Hoops rebound, you know, like when you pick yourselves back up… These guys took one on the chin last week in Floor Hockey v.Team Watts but came back in a big way this week in a matchup against Team Free Agent with an 11-6 softball win. Being able to “rebound” is essential in All Sports Series and Team Riskin has proven they are capable of it.  They’re going to need to hold the fort the next few weeks as Captain Matt Riskin will be on vacation.. Don’t worry he’ll be back in time for the Playoffs.

11. Team Fallows (Teplitz & Bell) – Currently in 13th with 40 points.

Last week, Team Fallows dropped a nail-biter in OT after Team Cohen held them-off during a comeback late in the second half. Most would let that L linger and potentially impact them in their next Game.. But not Team Fallows.  They went toe to toe with the Dynasty aka Team Hakimian on the gridiron this week and came away with an unbelievable, improbable, impossible last-second Hail Mary TD to earn the W.  These guys are climbing and now will have a bunch of confidence going forward. Team Fallows is a group to keep your eye in the next few weeks.. They are a potential VBall Tourney Champion and that would springboard them into a top seed..

12. Team Mason (Alternative) – Currently tied for 10th with 45 points.

Team Mason picked up a much needed Win this week, grabbing a huge 30 points from their softball victory over Team Hadelman.  Not only did they need the W for their Playoff Push, but they took down one of the League’s titans in the process and it will be something they can draw on come the end of the Season to say to themselves, “we can beat anyone.”  Much of the W came on the massive shoulders of Captain Danny Mason who was dealing on the mound.  With each lob of the ball he showed his artistry.. Who knew he had it in him?

13. Team Wilneff (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently in 16th with 30 points.

What a week for these guys. Every week has brought  something different for them, but it was no surprise when they caught their stride on the Hoops court, regaining some much needed ground in the Standings.  These guys have had great success in the Suburbs College/Prep Leagues (some have been Champions of that League).. They know how to get on a roll.. But it’s gonna take more than one win to pick up the momentum they need to carry them through the rest of the competition.  This Team is about Playoff Ws and in the next few weeks they need to do more to get themselves in the right position to allow for that. They will.

14. Team Sharrin (Michael’s Events) – Currently tied for 14th with 35 points.

Talk about bad luck. Team Sharrin has faced some of the toughest opponents in the League and in their best Sports to boot. This week was no different as they caught Team Wilneff in Hoops.. But a look at the Standings shows these guys are still right there in the middle of the pack. Don’t get comfortable. Their schedule could not have been more difficult to this point and they’d still be in the Playoffs if they started today. Team Sharrin is going to be a really tough out come August.

15. Team Daar (popchips) – Currently tied for 7th with 50 points.

Losing to a Team that’s #1 in the Standings is nothing to be ashamed about. Team Daar is holding strong in terms of the Standings and has an outside chance for a Top 5 seed. These guys are dangerous as their best is often better than the other team’s best.. They just need to find a way to show a bit more consistency.. They have a few weeks to straighten it out because their talent would allow for a run to the Crown.

16. Team Harris (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 19th with 15 points.

“Welcome to the Big Show” (Jock Jams voice).  Team Harris might be the most misleading Team in the Standings at this point.  This group, the 2013 Champaign League Champs, has battled week after week, falling just short of a Win each time. Their opponent this week, Team Kaplan, is one of the feistiest Teams in the League, but nothing could stop Team Harris this week. The times they are a changing and it looks like they’re changing in Team Harris’ direction.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Altman (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 19th with 15 points.

Only good things are on the horizon for this squad after facing some truly tough obstacles the last couple of weeks. Monday Night they dropped a tough test against the lethally fast Team Holzman Offense in Floor Hockey but they’ve shown they have the grit to keep on fighting and get Ws.  They are a Playoff Team.

Team Free Agent (Worth Sports) – Currently tied for 23rd with 0 points.

They are getting closer.. They of course are the only Team in the League to have not known each other prior to Week 1.. Chemistry is not an easy thing to come by.. Nor is finding the right positions for everyone or strategies on the fly for a new group.  They put a strong fight on Monday Night in Softball and they are going to get a W soon.

Team Hakimian (The MacMentor) – Currently tied for 19th with 15 points.

Has this been the smooth sailing Regular Season these guys are accustomed to?  No.  Still think this makes them even scarier in the Playoffs.  They have 3 Crowns on their mantle.. More than any other Men’s Franchise in the history of All Sports Series.  Don’t care what the Standings say they are among the favorites to win in 2014 as well.  They will be among the favorites to win the VBall Tourney in a couple weeks and if they take care of biz, they will spring into the middle of the pack.. A perfect spot to be for a magical August run.

Team Jasinski (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Silver) – Currently tied for 18th with 20 points.

Team Jasinski picked up an effortless win over this week, taking 20 much needed points to move on in the competition. So effortless it was if they were playing themselves by the end of the night.. These guys are on the right track now and should only improve going forward.

Team Kaplan (SLA Insurance Black) – Currently tied for 19th with 15 points.

Team Kaplan, just like their opposition this week, often doesn’t get the credit/recognition it deserves in All Sports Series. But credit where it’s due, these guys have fought through matchups that would have kept other groups dead in the water and they’ve moved forward just as they know how to do.  If they can get into the Playoffs, and they certainly have the talent to do so, they are going to be a scary group to line-up against.

Team Mentgen (Paws-N-Effect) – Currently tied for 23rd with 0 points.

Not their best showing. Plenty of time to get back on track.

Team Schulte (PPM Apartments) – Currently tied for 18th with 20 points.

Week after week Schulte has been a part of some of the best matchups on Monday nights. They’ve had a reason to leave the court heads held high every week and this week was no different. They know how to battle and they showed us in Week 1 that they definitely know how to win, now it’s just a matter of getting back in their groove.

Team Watts (West Coast Shaving) – Currently tied for 14th with 35 points.

This week it looked like Team Zimmerman took a page out of Team Watts’ book, showing an absolutely dominant performance on the softball field in a near shutout. Team Watts hasn’t totally hit their stride yet this season (contrary to seasons’ past) but is undoubtedly one of the most talented crews in the Men’s League.  No one will want to play them in the Opening Round of the Playoffs.  In fact, there are Teams atop the Standings right now crossing their fingers Team Watts doesn’t wind up next to them in the Bracket.

That’s it for us. See some of you on Saturday for Rain Make-Ups.. If not, see you Monday Night!
