2014 Madison – Men’s Week 1 Hoops (Sept. 15)

Updated: September 19, 2014

The 2014 Madison League has begun! Well the Men’s League has begun… Co-Ed starts next week! Each Week you can count on a Power Rankings article to be posted to allsportsseries.com that recaps the week that was and provides a bit of insight to what’s in store for the following week.  You can also count on a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights.  Feel free to POST BELOW w/ Disqus to let your feelings be heard (we ask just to keep the comments clean).

So this is how it works — Each Week 5 of the 8 Men’s Teams (and starting next week 2 of the 4 Co-Ed Teams) will get Ranked in the Power Rankings while the other 4 Teams will remain unranked (and listed alphabetically) — with the goal of jumping into the Rankings the following week. A few things to keep in mind: 1) the Power Rankings are done mostly with a statistical feel and very little actual “insight.”  2) The Power Rankings have ZERO to do with the actual Standings.

OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Men’s League

1. Team Max (Ian’s Pizza) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Where else to start than with the Defending Champs Team Max?  These guys ran through the Madison League in 2013 and picked up right where they left off in 2014.  Captained by Tyler Max, who is climbing the most Games Played list in All Sports Series history with each passing week, this crew is chalk full of experience and athletes.  These Guys have a serious amount of All Sports Series hardware as well.. In addition to the 2013 Madison Crown, Captain Tyler was apart of the 2014 College/Prep Championship Crew – Team Maione (in Highland Park, IL every Summer).  He also went off for 25 points on Monday Night.  As well mainstays Sam Sternberg and Josh Schur have won a College/Prep Crown as well..  These guys know they are flirting with history as a very select few have managed to navigate to Back2Back Championships.  As Seniors, they know this is one of their last chances to cement their place in the Madison Men’s League Mt. Rushmore for years to come..

2. Team Callahan – KSig JR (SLA Insurance Green) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

One of Team Max’s toughest competitors will be Team Callahan.  These Juniors from Kappa Sig aren’t just happy to be at the party.. They want to win this thing.  They too have tons of All Sports Series experience.. But none have had the chance to hold the Crown and they are hungry to finally do so..  They started their quest off on the right foot Monday Night as they grabbed an impressive W in Hoops anchored by Luke Jacobson and his 17 points.  These guys will be at or near the top of the Power Rankings all season long.. Can they finally breakthrough and grab the Crown?  We’ll see.

3. Team Saltzman – KSig SR (9Round Madison) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Team Saltzman had the biggest margin of victory on Monday Night and can rightfully lay claim to a higher spot than #3 this week.. These guys played in 2013 but as different squads and have come together in 2014 under the Team Saltzman banner to take home a Championship before graduating.. They are a deep crew that will pose a threat in each and every sport this Season. Truman Tiernan and Torger Philosophos led the way Monday Night with 15 and 14 points collectively on Monday Night.  Basically they all looked great and they’ll look to stay on their roll next week when they take on the Freshman – Team Bernstein in their debut appearance.

4. Team Norris – KSig SO (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Team Norris made it a Kappa Sig sweep on Monday Night as all 3 Teams garnered Week 1 Hoops victories.  Captain Skyler Norris is an All Sports Series vet as he has played in many versions of the Summer College/Prep League.  He is joined by teammate Alec Greenberg who’s squad in that same 20-Team League finished as the Runners-Up this past Summer.  They know how to form a squad and get through the rigorous All Sports Series journey.  I think they may fly under the radar for a few weeks — which will be good for them.. I expect a high seed come Playoff time for them and from there anything is possible.  Alec Greenberg led all scorers on Monday Night netting an impressive 29 points.  Some opening night for these guys.

5. Team Holway – AEPi JR (MacTaggart’s) – Currently tied for 5th with 0 points.

Team Holway is the final team to break into the Rankings this week.  They didn’t get their desired result in Week 1 but they showed a lot in their tough battle with Team Callahan.. The Ws are going to come for this crew led by vet Brad Holway.  They retooled a bit from last season and seemingly for the better.  They are a big crew and their size should show dividends as the Season rolls on as well.  Look for these guys to make up for their Week 1 L soon.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order) – Currently tied for 5th with 0 points.

Team Bernstein (Badger Bowl)

This Freshman crew will get their first Game this coming Monday Night as a previous obligation wouldn’t allow them to make Opening Night.  They’ll have a double header in Hoops down the road to make up for the missed Game..  Look for them to try and breakthrough into the Rankings next week!

Team Pulfer – Fiji (SLA Insurance Purple)

In their first night in All Sports Series they had the toughest task imaginable.. They had to take on the Defending Champs and in their best sport.  What was encouraging is that they held their own for much of the Game and they will have a much better idea going forward of what to expect week to week. Captain Randall Pulfer was teammates with Alec Greenberg (mentioned above – Team Norris) this past Summer on a Team that took 2nd out of 20 in the College/Prep League in Highland Park, IL.  He knows how to get it done and his Team clearly has talent as well.  He added 21 points on Night 1 to keep his Team in it.  They are going to hop into the Rankings before long.  Book it.

Team Weisberg – AEPi SO (Goben Cars)

They are true Rookies to All Sports Series in every sense of the word. No one on this Roster has ever participated in All Sports Series and there’s usually a bit of a learning curve for a few weeks.. They are a deep crew though and with some real talent.. Come Playoff Time this is a group that Teams won’t want to see.  Welcome to the League guys!

Co-Ed League Power Rankings start next week!

Team Biaggi’s, Team Goben Cars, Team Distinctive Foods, Team Badger Bowl

Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend. See you Monday Night!
