2014 Suburbs College/Prep – Week 3 Hoops (June 15)

Updated: June 18, 2014

What a set of games in the College/Prep League’s Week 3!  We had a long-time record broken, a dad play on Father’s Day and much more.  Before we get to the Power Rankings here’s the Link to the Weekly Video Highlights.  Through 3 weeks, Teams are starting to separate themselves and make a charge toward the Playoffs! Let’s find out where they stand shall we..

Power Rankings

1. Team Valvassori (Loree’s Closet) – Currently in 1st with 70 points.

Team Valvassori sits atop the mountain after 3 weeks and giving no indication of slowing down. They’re leading the pack with 70 points, earned through two Hoops Wins, one against a resilient Team Audley in Week 1, and this week against Team Serck. What’s giving them the edge is their big 40-point grab for 1st place in the Vball tourney last week. Mike Gajos put up 19 points in the game against Team Serck this week and finished in the top 10 scorers for the entire League. Several other teams are still in the hunt for those Top-2 spots, but they’ll need to pick up a lot of the 80 to 95 remaining points available to them to just that.

2. Team Sternberg (ALX Salon) – Currently tied for 2nd with 40 points.

Both Team Sternberg and their opponent this Week, Team Alemeleh, emerged as Teams to watch coming out of Week 1.  Then in the Vball Tourney, Team Sternberg had a great day, coming in 4th place (and earning more points than 16 other Squads). Their Game on Sunday was one of the most hotly anticipated of Sunday’s slate and Team Sternberg walked off with a decisive 62-43 win, led by Aaron Cohn and Scott Fenton’s 22 and 14 points respectively.  These guys did not have the Regular Season they had hoped for last year but made another one of their resilient playoff runs in 2013.. That gave them the confidence as a group to know they had what it takes to beat anyone.. They are showing that early in 2014.

3. Team Merritt (Sarkis Cafe) – Currently in 4th with 30 points.

Being the youngest Team in the League for the second year running hasn’t kept Team Merritt from climbing up the Ranks and finding themselves in 3rd place.  Both teams played with hustle, with Team Merritt’s Sage Bruhl putting up 20 points in the OT thriller.. They needed every last one of those points to get to Overtime.. In OT it was all Team Merritt..  They have grown up in more ways than one since 2013.. They are as deep as any Team in the League and with every W, their confidence just soars.. The rest of the League better realize Team Merritt is not the little, young underdog any longer.

4. Team Kogan (First Bank of Highland Park) – Currently tied for 5th with 18 points.

Take a peak at the picture above.  Are you thinking, “wait that couldn’t mean he scored 63?”  Well he did.  Brad Reibel of Team Kogan scored 63 points on Sunday and totally re-wrote the All Sports Series Record books.  You’re reading that correctly. SIXTY-THREE! The game’s scorekeeper Alex (Captain) Merritt said he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, “It felt like every possession I was adding another tally to his name.”  Reibel helped Team Kogan accumulate 117 points on the night which breaks a College/Prep League Record as well.  To say they were hot would be a vast understatement.  It was if they channeled the globe trotters for 40 minutes. Just craziness.. Well done Team Kogan and we see you Brad.

t-5. Team Maione (Baker Boys) – Currently tied for 2nd with 40 points and Team Watts (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 8th with 15 points.

A glance at Team Watts’ point total for the season wouldn’t cause much of a blip on your radar, but anyone who has seen them play the last three weeks knows better. In week 1 while Team Maione ran away with a 72-36 win, Team Watts endured a tough loss to Team Sternberg in the CEA Study Abroad Game of the Day. Despite strong play in the pool-play round of the Vball Tourney, Team Watts failed to get through to the Knockout Rounds but finally, this week, came out on top with a win against the formidable Team Maione. Alex Sacks led the team with 25 points, making him the number 4 scorer for the week, with Jamie Nikitas contributing a much needed 18 points and an all around energy to the squad. Although this wasn’t their week,  Team Maione is still poised as one of the Titans in this League with their 40 points putting them in a tie for second place with Team Sternberg.  You may ask, “why are they tied in the Power Rankings if Team Watts defeated them on Sunday?”  We can’t discount Team Maione’s impressive first couple of weeks.. If they falter again though, Team Watts will surely be there to leapfrog them.

7. Team Rijos (Tamales) – Currently tied for 5th with 18 points.

In their Game with Team Liss, both crews hustled and showed promise moving forward.  Jake Prizant led the squad in scoring with 20 points. Team Rijos is on the board with 18 points after this win and a strong showing in the pool play round of the Vball Tourney.  They still have that Hoops Double Header in July, so they are in good shape both confidence wise and in terms of potential points left.  These guys can really play.

8. Team Deutsch (Highland Pop) – Currently tied for 5th with 18 points.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.. These guys are good anyways.. Didn’t have to break a sweat to earn points on Father’s Day but as many of you know.. In All Sports Series you take them in any way you can get them.

9. Team Saltzberg (Danley’s Garage) – Currently tied for 8th with 15 points.

They are on the board!  The first win is usually the hardest to come by in All Sports Series and Team Saltzberg can check that one off their to-do list. Brian Biggio, Michael Park and Eugene Tsipris from Team Saltzberg came in big this game with a combined 50 points towards the total.  These guys are now finding their stride and should keep movin’ on up as the weeks roll by.

10. Team Audley (Sandusky Lee) – Currently tied for 8th with 15 points.

Sometimes you just have to chalk a Game up to “we caught them on their best day” and move on.. Team Audley ran into the juggernaut that was Team Kogan and Brad Reibel on Sunday. Honestly, not sure if Coach Thibs could have stopped those guys last Week..  Team Audley was super impressive in the Vball Tourney last week, finishing in 3rd and from pre-season scouting.. Football should be a strength of theirs as well.  These guys are going to be just fine.

11. Team Rubin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Navy) – Currently tied for 8th with 15 points.

Team Rubin put up a strong display in the season opener against Team Shapiro and came to play the exact same way on Sunday. Team Rubin’s Moses Park put up 28, the second highest total of the week.. Unfortunately, they took the gamely Team Merritt squad to OT on Sunday but just couldn’t pull it out.  It is evident that Team Rubin can really play Hoops and it seems this is the best version of their Team in their 3-year All Sports Series run. These guys are going to do damage when August rolls around.

12. Team Lutz (Poopie Palz) – Currently tied for 8th with 15 points.

See Team Deutsch above. A win is a win is a win.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical)

Team Almeleh (Trifecta Grill) – Currently tied for 8th with 15 points.

They didn’t play their best on Sunday and that’s what is needed to beat Team Sternberg in Hoops. However, they now know what it’ll take to beat that Team and the Playoffs always have a funny way of presenting some great Rematches.. If these two should cross paths again, Team Almeleh will be up to the task. They also boasted their bench this Sunday adding Mr. “Happy Father’s Day” Malvin to the Roster.. He also hit a mid-range J in the early part of the Game.

Team Gordon (Gordon Bros. Steel) – Currently tied for 8th with 15 points.

See Team Lutz and Deutsch above.  Can they make it two in a row on Sunday in Flag Football?

Team Jurczuk (Sushi Kushi Too) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Team Kaplan (Michael’s Events) – Currently in 16th with 3 points.

Team Liss (Testing Timers) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Captain Jordan Liss led with 28 points, tying for second-most points for the week.. These guys were up at the Half but just couldn’t hold on. So often it is the case in All Sports Series with the long games, only 6 players wears you down by the time the end of the Game rolls around.. They are going to get a W soon and be right in the thick of things going forward.. They have that Hoops Double Header in mid-july as well so their potential points remaining are a strong ally..Don’t sleep on them.

Team Serck Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Royal)  – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Again, going to take a couple of weeks for this crew to really gel with one another as many of them have just met each other for the first time in the past 2 weeks or so. They have plenty of time to find their stride and likely will as they have several talented athletes on the squad.  Better get to this group before they fine-tune everything, because after the fact there is no turning back.

Team Shapiro (BBQ Pit) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Still searching for that first W. As stated above it’s often the hardest one to come by in All Sports Series. They’ll get it soon enough and then the confidence will only grow from there. This is a Playoff Team.  Book it.

Team Teitelbaum (Once Upon a Bagel) – Currently in 15th with 7 points.

Looking to bounce back in Flag Football.. Where they were one of if not THE strongest squad in the League in 2013.

Have a great weekend and see you Sunday!!
