2014 Suburbs College/Prep – Week 4 Flag Football (June 22)

Updated: June 27, 2014

Somehow we are over the midway point of the College/Prep powered by CEA Study Abroad –  Regular Season.. That means the Playoff Push is now in full gear..  Before we get to last week’s action here is a link to the Weekly Highlight Video!

There was so much action on Sunday at the first week of Flag Football.. Truly fun to watch.. We also caught our first glimpse of what the Championship Flag Football could look like come August. OK Let’s Rank ’em

Power Rankings

1. Team Valvassori (Loree’s Closet) – Currently in 1st with 90 points.

For all the other Teams out there who weren’t worried about Team Valvassori’s momentum before, now might be the time to get concerned. With 90 points in the League, and at least 30 points ahead of any other Teams, it looks like Team Valvassori is cruising to a Top2 finish.. Remember, the Top2 Teams in the Regular Season essentially get a bye in the Opening Rounds of the Playoffs (to the Elite8) and play each other in Hoops, with the Winner getting to select their side of the bracket for the Elite8 and on.. This week they Won 30-0 with a whopping 5 TDs coming from Dillon “QB1” Rudy, the second highest total TD total for the week.

2. Team Sternberg (ALX Salon) – Currently tied for 2nd with 60 points.

Team Sternberg along with Team Maione are clinging on to a real striking position at first place. This week that trajectory almost got derailed with a close 20-12 win over Team Shapiro, in a Game that seemed like it was over early, but got really interesting late. In a low-scoring game, Andrew Mott and Sam Rogers were able to score a TD each. Something to keep in mind is that Team Sternberg is yet to go a week without putting points on the leaderboard. It doesn’t take an undefeated record to win in All Sports Series, it takes grit, hard work, and diverse talent.. These guys clearly can win in anything and will have to in order to reach the Crown come August.

3. Team Kogan (First Bank of Highland Park) – Currently tied for 5th with 38 points.

They got a close OT W over Rivals Team Deutsch this week that kept Kogan near the top of the Standings (tied for 5th with Team Rijos). Jordan Schwartz led the team with 2 touchdowns, via his legs, in this narrow victory that would end up being the CEA Study Abroad Game of the Day. Team Kogan has made a strong showing every week.. Keep watching closely to see if these guys can get ahead in the next couple weeks.. They really are one of the sleeping giants in the League this Summer.. Certainly good enough to win the whole thing, and not quite sure people are watching them as closely as they should be..

4. Team Merritt (Sarkis Cafe) – Currently in 4th with 50 points.

With the usual showy flare they bring to their games, Team Merritt was able to knock-off Team Serck this week in a start-to-finish, dominant performance.  Team Merritt was able to pull out the win this week led by Jake Santellano who pulled in 6 TDs. At the  final whistle, they had an extremely impressive series of lateral passes between the entire team that brought the ball to the end-zone. Team Merritt sits in 4th place and has the complete potential to move up the rankings in the weeks that follow. Just because they’re the All Sports youngsters doesn’t mean they don’t have what it takes to be the Champs.

5. Team Maione (Baker Boys) – Currently tied for 2nd with 60 points.

Team Maione, the remnants of a championship and a runner-up squad from the last two years, is looking like the one of the few likely contenders for a Top2 finish come the end of the Regular Season. They know how important it is to get in that Top2 spot.. They are likely going to be the strongest Softball Team in the field once again in 2014 and a Top2 finish means they would get a bye to the Elite8 (Softball Round).. Simply huge. In football this week, All Sports Series vet Morris Greco brought in 3 TDs (as QB) while Ben Detzner hauled in 2 of them in their 18-6 W. Stay tuned to watch what these guys can do.

6. Team Watts (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 7th with 35 points.

Sometimes it can seem like one sport is the downfall of a team in this game, but those that have seen a few seasons know that isn’t the case.  Experience is truly a valuable asset, especially in All Sports Series, where no weeks can be wasted on feeling sorry for yourselves.  They suffered a heartbreaking loss to Team Sternberg in Week 1’s Game of the Day, and instead of getting down, they bounced back in Week 3 with a win over a very strong Team Maione. This week looked a lot like a turning point for Team Watts with their 26-6 win over Team Almeleh.  If they can string together a couple more Ws, these guys also have what it takes to end up as the final Team standing.

7. Team Rijos (Tamales) – Currently tied for 5th with 38 points.

In a race it’s toughest to separate yourself from the middle of the pack, and lucky for them, Team Rijos is in a position right at the front ready to sprint ahead. Tied in 5th of the Standings with 38 points, these guys still have the capacity to make this season theirs, especially with one more game left to win than the four leaders (they have a double header in Hoops looming). Jake Prizant led their roster this week with 3 TDs. Anything could happen in the next couple of weeks, and don’t be surprised if that means these guys moving into a Top spot of the Standings (and Power Rankings).

8. Team Rubin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Navy) – Currently tied for 7th with 35 points.

With a dominant W, this week Team Rubin picked up a lot of necessary momentum that will come in handy during some tough up and coming contests. It’s nice to look back and know “we can do this.” In their third year in the competition these guys could finally take what they’ve set out for.  They have been among the most impressive Teams all Season long.. The standings don’t always tell the full story, because if it weren’t for a few baskets (and an OT Hoops loss) Team Rubin could easily have been on top of the hill going into this week. Captain Cameron Rubin led this week with 6 TDs, tied for the most of the week. Good stuff Cam.

9. Team Lutz (Poopie Palz) – Currently tied for 7th with 35 points.

There’s usually a week where Teams can look back and say “that’s when we really made our first impact.”  That was this week.  That impact came via a 22-20 win OT over a tough Team Gordon squad.. They too have a double header in Hoops looming and if they bring their A-game can really move up the leaderboard in a hurry..It’s imperative for first-time squads to get a good seed in the Playoffs.  Matchups are everything in the All Sports Series Playoffs, and even with some luck involved, matchups dictate everything.

10. Team Deutsch (Highland Pop) – Currently in 11th with 18 points.

Team Deutsch made their game against Team Kogan the most entertaining of the day. Both teams kept each other hustling all day long with Team Kogan ending on top in OT.  Team Deutsch is another double-header Hoops squad and they are lethal on the Hoops Court.  By the next time Team Deutsch takes the gridiron they could very well be sitting near the top of the Standings (and Power Rankings). Stay tuned.

11. Team Kaplan (Michael’s Events) – Currently in 10th with 23 points.

Team Kaplan brought the pain on Sunday with one of the week’s three shutout victories. Their 24-0 win came with a TD a piece from Frank Dini, Connor Lewis and Alan Velev.  Not sure if many are too familiar with these guys on their Rookie campaign but if Sunday was any indication of things to come… flying under the radar will be a thing of the past.

12. Team Almeleh (Trifecta Grill) – Currently tied for 12th with 15 points.

These guys are true All Sports Series vets. They are truly one of the most determined crews around and that determination shows every time they step out to play. They made a loud entrance in Week 1 with a strong Hoops win, but have since then, lost their mojo a bit. Alex Rasky and Alex Kirshenbaum each pulled in a TD during their game against Watts this week.  To say, “not worried about these guys” would be an understatement.  They’ve been to All Sports Series Final4s and have Playoff Ws under their belt.. They’ll be there at the end.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Audley (Sandusky Lee) – Currently tied for 12th with 15 points.

Looking at the their schedule.. You just have to shake your heads.. 2pt Loss in Week 1 to #1 Team Valvassori, earned 3rd in the VBall Tourney, then they met up with the gigantic Brad Reibel/Team Kogan performance in Week 3… It’s amazing these guys have any points at all.. But they do. Their schedule could only get easier.. They are trending upward.

Team Gordon (Gordon Bros.) – Currently tied for 12th with 15 points.

These All Sports veterans don’t play with even an ounce of quit. Every week they’ve left everything out there, and unfortunately this week that effort was just two points short of the win they absolutely needed. They tied the game up at the final whistle and forced OT.  However, in OT, things didn’t go their way..  There are only three weeks left, but expect these guys to keep showing up for every minute of those contests.  They are still in fine position for the Playoffs and have looked more and more impressive each week. Another W is coming soon.

Team Liss (Testing Timers) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Sometimes you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.. #1 Team Valvassori is just a wrecking ball right now.. Not much anyone can do.. Great to see Jacob Serck back on the All Sports Series field!

Team Saltzberg (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 12 with 15 points.

They’ve had a bit of an up and down run of it thus far.. This is what we do know.. They have the talent to get Ws.  They are likely to get into the Playoffs and with another W or 2 they will be a scary threat once they are there.

Team Shapiro (BBQ Pit) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Team Sternberg might be the toughest flag football matchup in the League. Not to say they have the most size or speed, but they are likely the smartest group out there. There’s a lot of strategy that goes into All Sports Series flag football and competing as a unit for the first time against Team Sternberg is really just horrible luck.

Team Serck (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Royal) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

They are starting to click as a Team. They showed flashes on Sunday afternoon and their first W is really right around the corner.  This is a situation where the rest of the League should be crossing their fingers they don’t figure it out soon enough because they could be scary come August.

That’s it for us. Have a great weekend! See you Sunday!
