2014 Suburbs College/Prep – Week 5 Softball (June 29)

Updated: July 4, 2014

Week 5 Softball has been completed and with it comes a new feel for the top of the Power Rankings and a clearer version of what the Playoffs could look like.  Remember, we are off next week for July 4 and when we return there will be just two weeks left in the Regular Season (some Teams have double headers during those two weeks).  Here’s a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights!  OK Let’s Rank ’em.

Power Rankings

1. Team Sternberg (ALX Salon) – Currently tied for 2nd with 85 points.

Up to #1 this week and deservedly so is the 2012 Champs – Team Sternberg. This week presented another real challenge for Team Sternberg when Team Saltzberg pushed them to a 9th inning in a nail-biting 5-4 W. Charlie Marks, Captain Sam Sternberg and Eric Silcroft provided enough offense for these guys to continue on their roll. The question going into the final couple weeks of the Regular Season will be can these guys snag a Top-2 spot in the Playoffs and then really try and dictate their Playoff run?

2. Team Maione (Baker Boys) – Currently tied for 2nd with 85 points.

Up to #2 this week and deservedly so is the 2012 Runners-Up – Team Maione (oh and partially the 2013 Champs – Team Greco as well).. Team Maione is one of the remaining teams with a realistic shot at a Top-2 Seed.  They’ve experienced a bit more turbulence in this Regular Season than in years past but all that matters for them is to wind-up with an Opening Round Bye. This week they won 12-1 led by Morris Greco getting on base 4 times including a HR (in the video).  There’s not much time in the Regular Season and these guys appear ready for the Playoffs.

3. Team Valvassori (Loree’s Closet) – Currently in 1st with 90 points.

The season’s beginning to come to a close and at this point Team Valvassori still controls their own destiny. They are still sitting in the pole position for a Top-2 Spot..  For the first time this season Team Valvassori seemed human however as they were knocked off 10-1 by Team Watts in Softball.  Is it that big of a deal?  No.  They now know what needs to be worked on before August and they will surely do what it takes.. This should be nothing more than a minor blip..

4. Team Watts (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 4th with with 60 points.

It’s tough to call someone a dark horse when they’ve played as strongly as Team Watts has all season but with the way these guys have picked up steam the last two weeks they really could be the team to beat.. Not sure if anyone else has truly caught on to it but these guys are a 4-pt Week 1 Loss to Team Sternberg away from having the most impressive resume in the entire League.  Following up last week’s strong football play these guys were able to pick up a 10-1 win with the aid of Bradley Holway and Captain Mack Watts who brought in 2 runs apiece and against former #1 Team Valvassori no less.. Watch out!

5. Team Lutz (Poopie Palz) – Currently tied for 4th with 60 points.

This crew has gone all season without any serious lapses in play and can rest comfortably going into playoffs, knowing they have a spot. However, these guys don’t seem like they are going to be complacent as they enter the stretch run in their Rookie Season. With their win over Team Merritt this week they earned some Northbrook bragging rights.. Cameron Werhane had a standout game with 3 hits contributing to their 10-6 win. Team Lutz is for real.

6. Team Rubin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Navy) – Currently tied for 4th with 60 points.

Team Rubin was one of several teams this week to walk away with a near shutout win, doing so with a 12-2 victory over Team Gordon. Aside from an OT Hoops Loss this season has been rather stellar for this bunch.. With a performance like this week’s they’ve reminded us that they’re one of the most consistently strong teams playing in All Sports Series this summer.  Their softball skills will certainly come in handy come August.. Now, they just need to get there..

7. Team Merritt (Sarkis Cafe) – Currently in 7th with 50 points.

Team Merritt hit one of their first big roadblocks this week with a tough Loss to Team Lutz. This Glenbrook squad has perhaps the best chemistry in this league and can easily bounce back, especially when players Jake Santellano and Adam Slutsky showed up with big performances like they did on Sunday. Their Game on Sunday speaks volumes to where Team Lutz is and less about Team Merritt.. These guys could still end up being the youngest ever All Sports Series champions in league history.

8. Team Almeleh (Trifecta Grill) – Currently in 9th with 40 points.

Team Almeleh made big moves this week passing up Team Kogan with a strong 8-0 win over them. They’ve shown up week after week and endured one of the toughest schedules in the League. They have hit some obstacles and bad luck along the way, however, this week was a reminder of what close observers have known all season: that these guys are hear to win the whole darn thing.  They could taste the title in Champaign and they are here this Summer to finish what they started last Fall.

9. Team Kogan (First Bank of Highland Park) – Currently tied for 10th with 38 points.

This was a rare Loss for Team Kogan who has spent most of the season towards the top of the Standings. They’ve overcome tough contest before though and can/will do it again. Team Almeleh has historically been a tough softball Team so Team Kogan should not focus too much on this past Sunday and should start to gear up for their huge Week 6 Hoops Double Header.  They can really climb up the Standings with a great showing. Remember they went for a 110+ in their last Hoops Game, led by the All Sports Series record – 63 points from Brad Reibel.

10. Team Kaplan (Michael’s Events) – Currently in 8th with 48 points.

In their first year it’s been easy for them to lie low without much attention, but if you don’t know they’re a threat by now then you should get ready for what they can do in the Playoffs. These guys can play.  They could be that mid-seeded Cinderella come August. Heard it here first.

11. Team Rijos (Tamales) – Currently tied for 10th with 38 points.

This was a crucial week for Team Rijos as the regular season begins to wrap up, and unfortunately the schedule matched them up with powerhouse Team Maione in their best sport – 16″ softball. They played tough but keep Team Maione off the base paths.  All that being said, don’t count them out yet. These guys are in great position to lock in a Playoff spot in the next couple of weeks.  They also have past Playoff Ws to look back on which many Teams in this field do not.  The Playoffs are a different animal and Team Rijos knows how to navigate the bracket.. In fact, it was a year ago that Team Rijos knocked off Team Maione in a thrilling-OT Playoff Hoops Game.. Team Maione had not forgotten that either..

t-12. Team Serck (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Royal) & Team Shapiro (BBQ Pit) – Currently tied for 12th with 25 points.

All Sports Series is a tricky thing and Serck proved they have finally figured everything out with a huge first W over Team Liss and putting themselves strongly on the board. Jordan Miller and Nick Cech scored two runs apiece while the rest of the squad played a solidly in the field. This is definitely a turning point for these guys who have brought their best week after week. What makes it all the sweeter, is there was some brotherly love going on with last week’s foe – Team Liss.

As for Team Shapiro.. Wow. What a week for these guys. Earning their first win a and a well-earned 25 points with a shutout 15-0 win over Team Audley. Jake Brody, Joey Zenner, Sam Sylvan and Dylan Kay were all stellar at the plate. They’ve faced tough competition all season and this was no different, however, on Sunday they came out on top.

Both squads are now in good shape for a Playoff run.. They just need to capitalize on their new found momentum.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical)

Team Audley (Sandusky Lee) – Currently tied for 15th with 15 points.

These guys just can’t catch a break. They’ve played the toughest teams in their best sports all season and this week they caught Team Shapiro just as they stepped into their element on the softball field. Timing is everything, and it hasn’t been in their favor so far this season, but that doesn’t mean it can’t in the future.  These guys are talented and have an August run in them.

Team Deutsch (Highland Pop) – Currently in 14th with 18 points.

Seems as if they needed some extra rest.. The holiday will afford that to them.

Team Gordon (Gordon Bros. Steel) – Currently tied for 15th with 15 points.

Team Gordon is still in a position to climb high and climb quick if they can make something happen the next two weeks. They’re tied for the final Playoff spots so if they can take care of their own business in the final two weeks they will be Playoff bound for the first time in their Franchise’s history!

Team Jurczuk (Sushi Kushi Too) – Currently tied for 19th with 0 points.

See Team Deutsch above.

Team Liss (Testing Timers) Currently tied for 19th with 0 points.

They have a Hoops double-header coming up in Week 6.  They have plenty of time to turn everything around and honestly that’s what is expected of these guys.  They have too much talent and too much going for them to not grab a W, which is all they need to do, to throw their names in the Playoff hat.

Team Saltzberg (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 15th with 15 points.

These guys were just within reach of turning their season around against #1 Team Sternberg this week in the toughest matchup we saw all day. They brought the #1 Team to 9 innings and fell short in a heartbreaking 5-4 loss. They may be down but they’re not out.. They are tied for the final Playoff spot so they still hold their destiny in their own hands. Their schedule has been brutal thus far and will only help them when they are ready to make their Playoff run.

Team Teitelbaum (Once Upon a Bagel) – Currently in 18th with 7 points.

See Team Deutsch above.

That’s it for us. Have a happy and safe July 4th and see you on Sunday July 13!
