2015-16 Chicago Hoops – Week 3 (Nov. 1)

By
Updated: November 3, 2015

3 Weeks in. 3 Undefeated Teams remain.. Another 8 Teams are sitting at 2-1 and ready to leapfrog those last 3 unbeatens…  We’ll get to that and a whole lot more in the Power Rankings below.. Here’s a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video powered by Orunje On-Demand Healthcare! OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Orunje) – 3-0, Currently tied for 1st

The top of the Power Rankings will look similar once again following Week 3.. Mainly because the top Teams in the League continue to show why they are the creme of the crop, week in and week out.. It was another 20+ pt W for the 2x Defending Champs who have not skipped a beat during their Roster rejuvenation.. They are going to face an under the radar Team Sternberg who really gets after it at both ends of the floor next Sunday. Should be a great barometer for Teams new and old to take a look at as Team Sternberg has been one of the more impressive Rookie squads so far this Fall.

2. Team Maione (popchips) – 3-0, Currently tied for 1st

They avenged what was their worst loss a year ago on Sunday Night.. Last year Team Maione only lost a handful of Games and most of those by a bucket or two.. All but one game against Team Tucci (then named Team Horwitz).  This was privately a highlighted Game for them on the Calendar and they came out with their best.. They look great once again to start the season and their confidence will propel them to great things once again.. We’re just a week away from a potential matchup of two 4-0 Teams, if both Team Maione and this week’s #3 can get through Week 4…

3. Team Harris (DoorDash) – 3-0, Currently tied for 1st

The biggest story thus far of the Regular Season just might be how good Team Harris is.  It’s not to say they haven’t been talented in the past.. Just a reminder, they were the #2 seed a year ago but this year just feels different.  They are as talented as any group in the League and size is now a strength as something that they are trying to work around.. They’ll have a hungry (and better than their record) Team Tucci in Week 4 and need to be careful not to look ahead to what could be a Game of the Year Candidate with Team Maione in Week 5.  Big time Games ahead for the Harris crew.

4. Team Zimmerman (Biaggi’s Navy) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

Team Zimmerman is so good. It’s genuinely fun to watch them play each week.  With the addition of Dave Altman their crunch-time 5 is just an insanely talented bunch that really can score for every part on the court at will.  This is a group that was always knocking on the door until this Summer’s breakthrough.. You get the feeling the weight being lifted off their shoulders have allowed them to just play more freely and they’ve improved as a result, a scary thought for the rest of the League.

5. Team Kozin (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

This squad has found themselves in 3 tight Games to start the year and they find themselves 2-1.  They are as good as it gets on Sunday Nights and there really might not be a better 1-2 punch down the stretch when you need a bucket than Josh Davis and Randall Hampton.. That was on full display once again during Week 3 as they gutted one out against the underrated Team Cohen.  If they can turn on the Defense a bit earlier in the night they really might be Unbeatable.   Team Gutman is up next for them.

6. Team Goldin (StudentCity) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

A true statement W for Team Goldin, who has amassed plenty of these over the years with their signature Defense.  They took down UC Booth, who was previously 2-0, on Sunday and did so convincingly with a 20+ pt W.  If you look at Team Goldin’s style in comparison to the rest of the still-forming top tier, they are just a different breed.  They let their Defense really dictate their Offense and so with suffocating on-ball D at the wings and a refusal to really allow easy Offensive put-backs.  They are always going to be among the top Teams because Defense is not something that can escape you on a given Sunday, as jump-shooting could sometimes do.. Another 2-1 squad, Team James-Hagari is next.

7. Team Bulwa (Le Brocq Lawyer) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

What a difference a couple of Weeks makes.. In Week 1, they got throttled by Team Maione.. Some would have pushed the panic button but not Team Bulwa. Their roster is right up there with the League’s best and now that they’ve gotten their full arsenal out there on Sunday Nights they are on rolling.. Zack Meuser made his debut on Sunday Night and fit in seamlessly. They are now at 2-1 and next Sunday they’ll have an opportunity to put the entire League on notice when they go toe to toe with #4 Team Zimmerman in the Game of the Week.

8. Team UC Booth (Kelly Parker HC Maroon) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

No Team is going to go Undefeated this season.. Even if it seems that a few of those Top Teams are truly dominant right now, there’s just too much talent and too many Games (19) in the Regular Season.. That means, each Team needs to learn how to bounce back from a Loss.. Team UC Booth ran into Team Goldin on Sunday Night who snapped their streak to start the season.. What’s most important is they come back next Sunday Night against Team Gainski with the same confidence they boasted in the first couple of weeks of the season.

9. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

Sunday Night’s W made it two in a row for Team Sternberg who are quickly getting their footing in the Hoops League. In Week 3, they got a well-deserved, hard-fought W over the previously Undefeated Team James-Hagari. They’ve found themselves in multiple close Games already and you can already see the improvements from Week 1 where they dropped a winnable one to Team Goldin. Team Sternberg is on the rise and it’s truly a perfect time to really see what they are made of.. In Week 4, they get the 2-time, 2-time Defending Champs #1 Team Lalez.  Can they knock off another Undefeated?

10. Team Free Agent (VIP Express Limo) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

It’s already been said a few times in the early stages of the year but this is not a typical Free Agent squad.. They are already finding ways to get Ws together and after three Weeks they find themselves over .500.. They are in store for a larger improvement than many other Teams as the Season wages on as well.. Again, most of the Players on this Team are just meeting one on another let alone learning each other’s games.. This is a scary group for the rest of the League.

11. Team James-Hagari (Biaggi’s Red) – 2-1, Currently tied for 4th

The UC Booth section above really applies here as well.. Team James-Hagari started off 2-0 on the year and then dropped a close one in Week 3 to Team Sternberg.. It’s a learning experience for this group that is also getting to know one each other during the early stages of the Season.. These close Losses often prove very valuable come Playoff time.. You need something to look back to and learn from those mistakes.. They could be 3-0 but at the end of the day, sitting at 2-1, with a few improvements to end of game strategy, may serve much more valuable. On to the next one..

12. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 1-2, Currently tied for 12th

A few Teams have really suffered from difficult schedules in the early stages of the Season and Team Cohen is surely one of those groups.. They’ve started with Team Harris, Team Tucci and most recently Team Kozin.. 3 of those Teams finished in the Top 6 last year. In the past two weeks they’ve been apart of two close Games and they’ve come out on both sides of it.. While, they are Ranked #12 right now.. This group is much, much better than the #12 Team in the League.. They are going to go on a tear soon. The schedule will eventually lighten up and they are coming for you..

13. Team Tucci (Esser Hayes Insurance) – 1-2, Currently tied for 12th

On a bit of a skid, but there’s no shame in dropping a Game to Team Maione. They haven’t shown even close to their best just yet and they’ve also had a tough schedule to get started.. A year ago they were talk of the League in the early going as they ripped through much of the Regular Season.. They are going to be just fine.  There are 16 Games left.. Plenty of time to get rolling again.. The 3-0 Team Harris is next.

14. Team Silver (Kelly Parker HC Gold) – 1-2, Currently tied for 12th

Got the first W of the Season and now that the monkey is off their backs they can concentrate on just playing good ball. Matt Rosenbaum made his debut on Sunday Night and his size is instantly a huge thing for Team Silver who sorely missed an inside presence in the first couple of Weeks. They have TONS of outside shooting so to have a guy in the lane to pinch the D in even a half step is gigantic for their Offense.  Team Schwartz is next.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Chicago Trolley) – 0-3, Currently tied for 17th

They are vets and now that these lulls can happen. Obviously they’d like it to happen later on down the road as you never want to start the Season on a L-streak, but again it’s going to happen with every Team in the League. There are just so many talented squads.. They’ve had a rough schedule and really should get easier from here on out.  They get Rivals Team Cohen in Week 4.

Team Gainski (SLA) – 0-3, Currently tied for 17th

They’ve faced Teams with combined records so far this Season of 6-3.. Most recently, it was 2x Defending Champs Team Lalez.  It has to (and will) get easier from here and once they get that first dub they’ll be able to breathe easier and just get to winning Games. Team UC Booth, who is also coming off of a Loss in Week 3, will be their next opponent.

Team Gutman (Teplitz & Bell) – 1-2, Currently tied for 12th

Ran into a Team Bulwa squad on Sunday that was trying to make a statement.. And did so.  This might not be a group that is eliciting much chatter around the League right now but sleeping on them would be a mistake.  Their roster from top to bottom is extremely deep and while they may not be flying on all cylinders just yet, the beauty of this Hoops League, is there’s just so much time for them to get right.  They are a very good Team and the record will eventually match the skill level here.

Team Malvin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 0-3, Currently tied for 17th

Much has been said about difficult schedules to start.. With so many great Teams out there, it’s hard to really get away from them for than a week or two.. Well, no one has had a harder start to the Season than Team Malvin. They’ve faced Teams with a combined record of 8-1… Zimmerman, Bulwa and most recently Harris. Unfortunately, next week it’s not getting any easier when they take on still Undefeated and #2 Team Maione.

Team Schwartz (Jam ‘n Honey) – 0-3, Currently tied for 17th

Similar to Team Apuli.. Team Schwartz is made up of All Sports Series vets.. They’ve had losing streaks before and know how to get through the funk.. It was actually a year ago when they started off slowly and then went on a tear once the weather really got bad.. If they can just stop the bleeding at 3 and turn it around, no one will even remember this in a few weeks. The talent is there. They’ve been here before. No worries for Team Schwartz.

Team Shamberg (Schweitzer Title Agency) – 1-2, Currently tied for 12th

Lost a winnable one on Sunday Night which always stings a bit.. They went down to the wire with Team Silver but just couldn’t grab the Week 3 W. They are going to go up against a feisty Free Agent squad in Week 4 and hopefully will not be too amped for their shot at the Champs in Week 5. First things first, Week 4 and getting back to .500 (and into the Rankings)!

That’s it for this Week.  Get ready for another full slate on Sunday Night!
