2015-16 Chicago Hoops – Week 6 (Nov. 22)

By
Updated: November 25, 2015

As we turn the page on Week 6, we are almost 1/3 done with the Regular Season and still two Undefeated Teams Remain: 2x Defending Champs Team Lalez and Team Harris.  Week 6 brought forth a few “upsets” from a Records standpoint and per usual, a few outstanding individual performances.. None Greater Than Justin Bowen who takes home the Greater Than Performance of the Week for his 44 point Game.  Just a reminder, we started this Award last week, and from here on out 1 Player will receive a case of GT!

Housekeeping Note:  WE DO HAVE GAMES THIS COMING SUNDAY (AFTER THANKSGIVING).. IT’S ON THE SCHEDULE, JUST A REMINDER, SEE YOU SUNDAY!

Here’s a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video powered by Orunje On-Demand Healthcare!  People have asked about Orunje.. Essentially you can get a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner out to your home/office within 2 hours. No need to waste time going in anymore..  OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Orunje) – 6-0, Currently tied for 1st

Another Sunday and another W for the 2x Defending Champs.  Yes, it’s repetitive, but honestly what else is there really to say right now about this bunch?  They are as deep as they’ve ever been.. While they lost size in the off-season they added depths of it, which they’ve never really had and now they can come at you with size in waves..  It’s looking more and more with each passing week that we may be nearing the first ever 3peat in All Sports Series history..  Scott Campbell with yet another Double-Double (24-10) and Dennis McKinney had 22 as well. Next week, they’ll get the 4-2 Free Agent squad.

2. Team Harris (DoorDash) – 6-0, Currently tied for 1st

Keeping pace with the 2x Defending Champs week in and week out is #2 Team Harris.  They too got to 6-0 on Sunday Night after a hard-fought W over Team Gutman. Week after week they are doing just enough to get the job done.  Dylan Richter came up huge with 29 points on the Night.  Not to get too ahead of ourselves here but there’s a very real chance that we’ll be looking at a Week 8 matchup between 7-0 Team Harris and a 6-1 Team Zimmerman crew that know each other very well. Both have some work to do in order to make that happen.. Either way, those 2 elite groups will clash in 2 Sundays.

3. Team Maione (popchips) – 5-1, Currently tied for 3rd

Good to see them bounce back after their first Loss of the Season in Week 5 to Team Harris. They got out and ran like crazy against a much better than advertised Team Cohen crew. Bradley Deutsch had 24, Andy Timson had 26 and Chris Wroblewski had 29 on Sunday Night.  Safe to say it was back to business as usual for Team Maione as they got over the century mark.  They’ll be up against familiar foes from HP in Week 7 as they take on Team Gutman.

4. Team Zimmerman (Biaggi’s Navy) – 5-1, Currently tied for 3rd

Saw more of their Game than on a usual Sunday Night and it was so easy to see why this group is 5-1. They were without much of their back-court this past week and, still, each guy on the Team wants to make the extra pass and get a good look for the Team.  This is a group with so much individual talent that it would be easy for any of them to just decide to go 1 on 1 for a stretch of the Game, but they don’t.  What’s truly scary is that Kyle Nelson and Dave Altman are really learning each other’s Games down low and it’s nearly impossible to stop them.. That’s before you start considering their outside shooting.. They get Team Kozin in Week 7 in a Playoff Rematch of epic proportions..

5. Team Goldin (StudentCity) – 5-1, Currently tied for 3rd

It’s hard to shine a light on the #5 Team in the Rankings each week.. It’s also hard to bump them up any further than this right now.. But if you aren’t paying attention to what Team Goldin has done through 6 Games you are doing yourself a gigantic disservice.. They have just 1 Loss on the year.. To the 2x Defending Champs by 6 points.. They are also destroying Teams.  They made some really great additions in the off-season and each week their Team is gaining chemistry.. They are also doing this all without resident Big-Man Garrett Staniec who should return in the Spring..  Their depth is an absolute killer as they are just wearing people down for 44 straight minutes (well it’s been 42 a lot, with the slaughter-rule Ws).. Case in point, this past Sunday when they had 5 Players in double digits..  Team Silver is next.

6. Team Bulwa (Le Brocq Lawyer) – 4-2, Currently tied for 6th

Highest Ranking of the year thus far for Team Bulwa and it is well-deserved.. Since starting the Season with an utter dud, they have gone 4-1 and are really gelling.. They got a huge W on Sunday Night over last year’s Runners-Up Team Kozin and did so without starting back-court members Captain Bulwa and Zack Meuser.. Even without them, they managed to win by almost 20 in Week 6!  Very impressive stuff.. Nick Winbush and Zack Novak are emerging as the best 1-2 scoring punch in the League and they should only get better with time.. Team Cohen in Week 7 for these guys..

7. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 4-2, Currently tied for 6th

4-2 now through 6 Weeks, this young group, with much All Sports Series success is starting show what they are truly made of.. Their two Losses on the year are to two Top-5 Teams (Lalez and Goldin), and they are already vastly improved since those outings.. They had 4 Players in double-figures on Sunday Night, including Jesse Pollans who had 24.  Much of the can thank Captain Sternberg who dished out 16 dimes on the night!  They will have a pivotal match-up in Week 7 with another 4-2 squad, who come in at #8 this Week…

8. Team UC Booth (Kelly Parker HC Maroon) – 4-2, Currently tied for 6th

They were without much of their normal Roster, as the group is away competing in an MBA Competition in Boston this week.. They held their own for some of the Game with Team Schwartz but just couldn’t generate enough Offense in the 2nd Half. No worries.. On to the next one.. An important Game with 4-2 #7 Team Sternberg.

9. Team Free Agent (VIP Express Limo) – 4-2, Currently tied for 6th

Just didn’t shoot the ball well on Sunday Night and when that happens it’s tough to get Ws in this League.  If you told them that through 6 Weeks (the first 6 times they’ve played with one another) that they’d be 4-2, you have to think they would have signed-up for that in a heart beat.. There’s no time to dwell on Week 6 either.. They have their biggest Game in Franchise history coming up as they’ll go toe to toe with the Undefeated 2x Defending Champs Team Lalez in Week 7!

10. Team Kozin (Camp Ojibwa) – 3-3, Currently tied for 10th

Their one step forward, one step back routine continued on Sunday Night.  Since Week 1, they’ve Won all the odd-numbered Weeks and have lost all the even-numbered Weeks, which leaves them at 3-3 through their first six.. It’s not a bad start by any means, but many figured that the Runners-Up from a year ago would have come out of the Gates faster.. They have a big Game on Sunday Night (and they are plenty used to those) with #4 Team Zimmerman.. If they keep up their trend, they’ll get the biggest W of their season next week!

11. Team Malvin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 2-4, Currently tied for 12th

Two in a row for Team Malvin and up to #11 this Week.. It was said numerous times over the Season’s first month, that they were much better than their record and now they are showing it.. Often, you just need to get that first W and everything else starts to fall into place.. Nate Johnson was key for the second straight week.. Going for 20 and 13.  Rodney Clark added 19 as well.  This group could have easily folded in a back and forth Game with vets Team Apuli but after their Week 5 W, they knew they could do it again and made big shots when they mattered most to pull out the close W. They’ll have the also “better than their record” Team Tucci on Sunday (who was the 5th overall seed heading into the Playoffs a year ago).

12. Team James-Hagari (Biaggi’s Red) – 3-3, Currently tied for 10th

Back to their winning ways and back to .500 for Team James-Hagari.  Arguably, their W was the biggest of Week 6. After winning 2-straight out of the gate, they had lost 3 in a row heading into Sunday Night.  Not only did they need a Win just to get their confidence back where it should be but they did it against a very formidable Team Free Agent (who entered Sunday at 4-1).. They also beat them by 20 points. It was extremely impressive. What they need to take from Sunday Night is the realization that the Defensive side of the ball is what got them the W. They scored just around their regular average but they really worked hard on D and held Team Free Agent to just 50 points on the night.  It was an impressive Win and one they need to build off of.. They have Team Gainski next week.

13. Team Schwartz (Jam ‘n Honey) – 2-4, Currently tied for 12th

Got a big-time W on Sunday Night and now are Winners of 2 of their last 3. Craig Samsky had a phenomenal night as he had 17 points and was a presence in the lane for them.. Anthony Bernardi and Austin Brown both also had Double Doubles on the night.  When Team Schwartz can manufacture some easy looks in the lane they are going to get Ws.  They work as hard as anyone week in and week out, so adding 5-7 easy looks makes all the difference for them. They’ll face a hungry Team Shamberg crew in Week 7 that they are eager to get another look at from this past Summer.

14. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 2-4, Currently tied for 12th

Holding on to the last spot in the Rankings this Week is Team Cohen.. Yes, they’ve lost 3 of 4, but their schedule helps place everything in perspective and losing to Team Maione is not something to really hold against anyone.. Justin Bowen was incredible on Sunday Night, netting 44 points for these guys.. Still it was just not enough.. They couldn’t contain Team Maione on the Defensive end.. It was just one of those nights where the Maione group were just raining 3s.. Tough to stop.  They are almost through this crazy-tough stretch to open the year but aren’t out of the woods yet as they’ll have #6 Team Bulwa in Week 7.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Chicago Trolley) – 0-6, Currently tied for 19th

At this point, they just need to forget about their record, and keep playing hard. No doubt that’s what veteran Captain Apuli is telling his guys as well.. They let one get away on Sunday Night with Team Malvin.. They were right there but it just didn’t go their way.. Their schedule has been brutal and it will ease up which is why they need to just continue playing their Game and let the record speak for itself when the season is over.. No need to worry about it at all right now.. They’ll try to snap 2 streaks on Sunday Night, their own, and the 6-Game Win streak of #2 Team Harris.

Team Gainski (SLA) – 0-6, Currently tied for 19th

Still left searching for Win #1 on what is still a young-season, even if it doesn’t feel that way.. There are many other Teams feeling the heat as well and that’s something they need to realize.. They are not alone in their place in the Standings, so there’s no reason to get down.. They are going to be fine and need to just keeping pushing through.. They’ll take on Team James-Hagari next Sunday Night!

Team Gutman (Teplitz & Bell) – 2-4, Currently tied for 12th

They’ve dropped a couple in a row since that huge W over Team Kozin in Week 4.  They held their own in a Game that was closer than the final score would indicate on Sunday Night.. They held a 2nd half lead over the Undefeated Team Harris.. What’s encouraging for them, is they are showing the ability to “play up” to the extremely strong competition that the Hoops League possess.. They just need to be sure and bring that same intensity against each and every Team.. In Week 7 they’ll get familiar foes, #3 Team Maione!

Team Shamberg (Schweitzer Title Agency) – 1-5, Currently tied for 16th

Lost to a tough Team Goldin squad on Sunday Night.  It’s going to happen.. Team Goldin’s size was just too much inside for the entirety of this one.. This is a group that has a Championship under it’s belt from the Summer and while it may not appear to be the case right now based on their record, they are capable of beating anyone in the League.  They just need to remind themselves of that.. One big W will turn the tide for them.. They get Team Schwartz in Week 7.

Team Silver (Kelly Parker HC Gold) – 1-5, Currently tied for 16th

Faced the 2x Defending Champs and suffered the same fate as everyone else who has come across them so far this Season..  They actually hung in there for the first half before Team Lalez’s depth just took over.. David Holmes shot the ball well as he had 23 on the night. They’ll look to snap their losing skid against the 5-1 Team Goldin next week.

Team Tucci (Esser Hayes Insurance) – 1-5, Currently tied for 16th

Let’s get a few things out of the way.. They haven’t started well. That much is obvious. After Winning in Week 1, they have Lost 5-straight.. But, if you dig a little deeper, you it’s easier to understand their early struggles.. Their 6-opponents have a combined record of 10-Games over .500 and in the past 4 weeks they’ve played #2 Harris, #3 Maione, #10 Kozin and #4 Zimmerman (this past Sunday).. They have gone into those Games with just 5-6 Players in each contest and it always is a different bunch.. You need depth and consistency to topple the top squads.. Which they know.. This is a group capable of running the table.. They are that good.. Week 7 brings Team Malvin their way..

That’s it for this Week. Enjoy Thanksgiving and see you Sunday Night!
