2015 Bloomington – Week 1 (Sept. 16)

By
Updated: September 21, 2015

Finally.. All Sports Series has come to … Bloomington!! We have a deep field of 12 Teams with tons of talent as Wednesday Night proved.. We’ll get to the Power Rankings in just a bit.. Quick Reminder, we are off this coming Wednesday (9/23) for Religious holidays but will return on Sept. 30 for Week 2 Softball/Flag Football.

For those playing in their first All Sports Series League, this is what you can expect from the weekly Power Rankings article.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-8 with the 4 UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. You can also count on a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video (<– Click right there!)   Also, if you have ever want to find any info on the League.. Go to Campus League > Champaign.. Everything you’d need from Stats to Schedules to Standings etc. will be found there..

One more thing before we get to the first version of the Power Rankings.. We have a brand new MVP Sponsor this Fall.. Student City has joined our cast of incredible Sponsors and they are offering up great deals on Spring Break trips to All Sports Series players..  If you want to learn more about that or any of our other Sponsors (like cea Study Abroad and the grants they provide students to go abroad!!) just fill out the contact form on the website above..  OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Delts (Classic Lanes Black) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Who knows what will come of the rest of the season but one thing is for sure.. Team Delts will always be the first #1 Team in Bloomington League history thanks to a dynamic performance on Wednesday Night in Hoops. The excitement was certainly in the air as their Game was the first to tip-off and both Teams were a bit caught up in the moment to start.. The scoring eventually would come once nerves settled and Team Delts really got going as we neared the half.. Riley Glassman led the way for them in this one with 17 points.  Captain Leland Pew and co. know they have a talented bunch and it will be interesting to watch them now play with the #1 bullseye on their back.  When we return from break they will have a match-up with Team Sammy 1 in Flag Football!

2. Team ATO SO (Student City Blue) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

The Sophomores from ATO came into the Gym on Wednesday Night and saw the ATO JR squad grab a W and knew they needed to top their fellow housemates on Opening Night.  Like most of the Games during Week 1, they took part in a heated affair with Team AEPi SR that either Team could have won.. In the second half Team ATO SO really opened up the lead however and secured the 1-0 start.  Ryan Saco had 21 to lead the Team and Griffin Furlong had 19 to chip in as well.  They are one of the younger Teams in the field but they play with a sense of confidence that will propel them all season long.  On Sept. 30 they will take to the softball diamond to face-off with Team ZBT 1.

3. Team Phi Psi (cea Study Abroad Navy) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Biggest margin of victory in Week 1 went to Team Phi Psi who never let their opening contest be in doubt.  They were very impressive in Hoops and if they can translate this to other sports they are going to be Championship Contenders come November.  Will Brassil led the scoring for them on Wednesday, as he got into double digits. On Wednesday 9/30, #3 Team Phi Psi will lace-em up on the gridiron to take on Team Sammy 2.

4. Team Sammy 1 (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

The highest-scoring Hoops Team in Week 1 was the Sammy 1 squad. Kyler Schroughan and his 36 points which led the League by (25%) was a huge reason why.  They didn’t really explode until the second half as it was a tight game until then.. Then the floodgates opened for Team Sammy 1 and the Week 1 W was all but assured.  In what could be the Game of the Week on 9/30.. #4 Team Sammy 1 will go toe to toe with #1 Team Delts on the gridiron. Can’t Wait.

5. Team ZBT 2 (Spikeball) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Always want to keep an eye out for the two Teams who took part in the closest Game during Week 1.  Often times, we can learn a lot about both squads in the couple of weeks that follow.. Team ZBT 2 pulled out a W in the closing seconds over Team Sammy 2 in what turned into Game of the Night.  Both Teams could have walked away with an Opening Night dub, but in the end it was ZBT 2. Danny Miecuna and his 20 helped in a huge way there. These guys can’t rest on this now.. Good Teams win close Games, as they did on Wednesday Night.. Let’s see if they can get hot early and really put pressure on other top squads.  They face a hungry Team Sigma Pi who will be looking for their first W in Softball on 9/30.

6. Team ATO JR (Classic Lanes Red) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Another Team who got a hard-fought W on Wednesday Night’s Week 1 was Team ATO JR.  The volume and emotion coming from their Game against Team ZBT 1 was clearly the loudest of the evening.  Both Teams wanted to start the Season off with a dub so badly and you could tell on every possession. The final score was a true indication of the effort being thrown out there as the Defense was a head of the Offense at every turn.. Eventually Team ATO JR took the 45-34 thanks to some free throws late.  DJ Deolitis led them in scoring with 17 points.  This squad has the early feel of a Team primed to make a run.. Obviously it’s early and we’ve only seen one sport.. However, their athletes jump out at you and their size is evident as well.  Certainly ones to watch.

7. Team Sammy 2 (Student City Red) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points.

Above in #5 Team ZBT 2’s section it was stated how you need to keep an eye on the two Teams coming out of the closest Opening Night Game.. While Team ZBT 2 will likely be happy with themselves with a Week 1 W.. Team Sammy 2 is going to be extremely hungry for their first W as the weeks go one.. They are clearly a talented bunch that could have won in Week 1 had the ball bounced their way one or two more times.. Captain Tony Shapiro knows full well how to navigate through All Sports Series and will have his guys ready for Week 2 on 9/30 where they will take on #3 Team Phi Psi in Flag Football.

8. Team ZBT 1 (Biaggi’s Silver) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points.

It’s already been mentioned once in the Power Rankings but the Game between ATO JR and ZBT 1 was a Defensive battle. Both Teams exerted everything they had to give and when the dust settled Team ATO JR just made a couple more shots than Team ZBT 1.  It’s just one Game though and this ZBT crew showed a lot on Opening Night, like fighting until the final buzzer.. They want it and that goes a long way in All Sports Series. Jack Norman was impressive with 13 on the night.  They will look to rebound on 9/30 with yet another ATO squad.. This time #2 Team ATO SO awaits in Softball.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order) – Currently all tied for 7th with 0 points.

Team AEPi SO (cea Study Abroad Orange)

Of all the Teams in the Bloomington League, Team AEPi SO has as much All Sports Series experience as any Team.. Despite their young age.. Many have gotten a lot of run in during past Summer College/Prep Leagues (Highland Park, IL).  They know what it takes to have success in All Sports Series and despite Week 1 not going their way, they will bounce back and be just fine. Especially if Seth Cooley can keep contributing in a big way. He had 24 on Wednesday. They have Team Sammy 3 who is also looking for their first W in 16″ Softball on Sept. 30.

Team AEPi SR (SLA Insurance Blue)

Their Game on Wednesday Night was much closer than the score would indicate as they were in it until late into their Week 1 Game against #2 Team ATO SO.   Benji Liener had 27 points and it was a definitely a performance his crew can rally around in the coming weeks.  They have a little over a week to prep now for Flag Football against the other ATO squad.. They’ll go head to head with #6 Team ATO JR on Sept. 30.

Team Sammy 3 (Biaggi’s Gold)

Had a tough task in Week 1 as they lined up against who turned out to be the #1 Team exiting Week 1.. Team Delts.. The bright side of that is the schedule should only get easier.. When we come back from the week-off on 9/30, these guys will hit the 16″ Softball diamond with another Team looking for their first W and a chance to move into the Rankings.. Team AEPi SO.  No one wants to start 0-2 so this is certainly a big one!

Team Sigma Pi (SLA Insurance Green)

Just one Game.. They’ll have a better outing on 9/30 for sure.  More to come on this crew soon.

That’s it for this week’s Power Rankings.  Final Reminder — see you back on 9/30. Have a great week!
