2015 Champaign – Week 1 (Sept. 9)

By
Updated: September 14, 2015

The 2015 Champaign League has officially begun!  We have a stacked field of 12 Teams with tons of talent as Wednesday Night proved.. We’ll get to the Power Rankings in just a bit.. For those playing in their first All Sports Series League, this is what you can expect from the weekly Power Rankings article.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-8 with the 4 UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. You can also count on a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video (<– Click right there!)   Also, if you have ever want to find any info on the League.. Go to Campus League > Champaign.. Everything you’d need from Stats to Schedules to Standings etc. will be found there..

One more thing before we get to the first version of the Power Rankings.. We have a brand new MVP Sponsor this Fall.. Student City has joined our cast of incredible Sponsors and they are offering up great deals on Spring Break trips to All Sports Series players..  If you want to learn more about that or any of our other Sponsors (like CEA Study Abroad and the grants they provide students to go abroad!!) just fill out the contact form on the website above..  OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Power Rankings

1. Team SigEp (CEA Study Abroad) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Where to begin but with the reigning and defending Champs of the Champaign League?! They began their quest for Back2Back crowns this past Wednesday Night and did so in impressive fashion. Entering their 3rd year of All Sports Series, Team SigEp has the most impressive resume of any Team by far. They’ve had a couple top finishes in each Regular Season and of course, grabbed the Crown in 2014.. They have new leadership this Season as Captain Mike Groves takes the reigns.. Not only did they earn the top spot as the Defending Champs, but they had the largest margin of victory in Week 1.. They are a really deep Team and it seems like they are ready to roll once again in 2015.

2. Team Pikes (Meijer) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

New to All Sports Series as a unit, Team Pikes, really grabbed everyone’s attention on Wednesday Night. They won what turned into the Game of the Night with Team ATO 2 and was a strong indicator that this Rookie squad is going to make a name for themselves and quickly.. They do have one All Sports Series veteran on the squad.. Trevor Ponticelli has played in a few of these Leagues and will help Captain Brian Owens lead this Pikes crew.. Welcome to the League and everyone else should watch out!

3. Team ATO 1 (iHotel Navy) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Other than Team SigEp, no squad has had more success in the Champaign League than this ATO group.. It seems just like yesterday that this core made a magical run (as Freshman) and massive underdogs in the first ever Champaign League (2013).. They took out several top seeds in one night and battled all the way to the Championship Game.  They have a tremendous amount of experience and know exactly what it takes to get to where they want to go.. They looked right at home on the Hoops court this past Wednesday Night and it’s going to fun to watch them take on the older-classmen role as opposed to being the young underdogs.. Great start!

4. Team AKL (Houlihan’s) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Team AKL is entering their 3rd year in All Sports Series and for years they’ve been one of the top Hoops squads.  That was on full display once again in Week 1 and was spearheaded by top scorer Dawai Chen who had 27 on the night!  These guys are the real deal and, similarly to #3 ATO 1, their core which was once among the youngest is now ready to take the squad to new heights as elder-statesmen. Welcome back. Excited to see what 2015 brings.

5. Team Sammy’s (Biaggi’s Purple) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

This Sammy’s squad is mostly made up of 18s so in a sense they are younger than many of the Teams in the Champaign League.. However, in terms of All Sports Series, they are chalk full of Veterans who have tons of experience under their belt.. They looked great in their first Game in the 217 as they took down Rivals ZBT 2 in Hoops on Wednesday Night. It’s great to see Tommy Sutker back on the All Sports Series court — he had 26 on the night — and Andrew Ferdman kicked in 20 as well.  This is a group that should excel in Flag Football as well.. If they look good against Team DChi next week in Softball, you may be looking at one of the favorites to walk away with the Barn Dance.

6. Team SAE (Farm Lake Barn) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

The final Team coming away with a big Week 1 W was Team SAE.  This is a group entering their second season as a unit and have a strong veteran leader at the helm in Chris Valvassori who is entering what is his 6th or 7th All Sports Series campaign.. He’s manned quite a few and knows how to guide a Team to success.. This is a deep bunch who can utilize their strength in numbers to stay fresh while other opponents are dwindling in the second halves of Games.. They were a strong Team last year as Sophomores and come into this Year as Juniors with a real sense that they can take the whole thing. Certainly off to a great start!

7. Team ATO 2 (SLA Insurance) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points.

There’s always one Game during the opening Week that catch’s everyone’s eye.. It’s hard-fought, well-played and feels more like a Playoff Game than a Week 1 contest.. With those Games, it’s always important to take a peak at the Team who comes up just a bit short.. While the Winners (in this case Team Pikes) come out feeling great about themselves.. The Losers (in this case Team ATO 2) come away looking almost as impressive but much more hungry!  That hunger usually will propel the group to huge things later on down the road. This cast of ATO 18s looked great out there in their All Sports Series debut and you can expect for them to only get better as we go along. Welcome!

8. Team ZBT 1 (Wedge Tequila Bar Black) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points.

Final Team to get into the Rankings this Week is the ZBT 1 crowd. They have a bunch of guys who have done significant damage in All Sports Series in the past and while they dropped the opener to Team SAE they are a sure bet to rebound (and quickly).  Sleeping on them would be a huge mistake.. They have just as good of a chance as any to hold the Crown come Thanksgiving.  Beware.

Rest of the Pack (Listed Alphabetically) – All Currently tied for 7th with 0 points.

Team DChi (Starr Limo)

The Delta Chi house is entering their second All Sports Series campaign although many of the 2015 version are along for their Rookie season.. They had a tough test in Week 1 as they faced the Defending Champs Team SigEp in arguably their best sport and with a very short (non-existent) bench.  Things will only get easier from here..

Team SAE 5s (Biaggi’s Gold)

The true “Veterans” of the 2015 Champaign League are the 5th Years from Team SAE.  They are entering their 3rd go-around in All Sports Series and once again Captain Dennis Lemke is leading the charge. Historically, they’ve started slowly but rebound nicely in the middle and late stages of the Regular Season before giving it a go come Playoff time.  They have a ton of talent and if they can manage to buck the trend a bit, start faster, and get a better seed.. They really are a true title contender.  Welcome back!

Team Sig Chi 5s (Wedge Tequila Bar Green)

It’s never too late for a fresh start.. This 5th year group led by Freddy Colmery is entering their first All Sports Series League.  They got a tough pull with the Week 1 schedule, as Team AKL has proven to be a Hoops power in the Champaign League for years now.. However, they did show that they have some real athleticism and they are likely to take down a few Teams in the coming weeks.  Don’t be surprised to see them pop up into the Rankings and then stay there!

Team ZBT 2 (iHotel Orange)

While their older bros on the ZBT 1 are chalk full of All Sports Series vets, this is mostly a Rookie crew, which is unusual for the ZBT Teams.  It will surely add some intrigue to his group moving forward.. We know that they will excel in Flag Football down the stretch, so let’s say how many Points they can grab in the Standings before their likely hot-finish (Flag Football are in Weeks 6 and 7).  Captain Jay Lehrman has been around the League for some time and that should provide some help that most Rookie squads don’t have.. Welcome to the League!

That’s it for this week. Be sure to check us out each and every week! See you Wednesday Night!
