2015 Chicago Co-Ed – Week 2 (June 22)

Updated: June 26, 2015

Week 2 of the Chicago Co-Ed League is in the books!  With it came the first full-slate of Games and we had some great performances!  For those who are checking out their first Power Rankings article.. Here’s what you can expect each and every week.. A Link to the Weekly Highlight Video (Weeks 1 and 2 are in this first Video of the Summer).  As well, you can count on a wrap-up of the week that was and a glance at the week ahead. Just keep in mind most of the Rankings are done based on a statistical analysis, I (Holden) don’t see nearly enough of each Game for these Rankings to be anything more than that.. They also have no barring on the actual Standings.

Now that the intro is out of the way.. The Co-Ed League powered by Stephen Le Brocq has a fun group this Summer with lots of new Teams being infused to challenge past powerhouses.  OK let’s Rank ‘Em!

Co-Ed Power Rankings

1. Team Steinbauer (RazorReef.com) – Currently tied for 4th with 25 points.

While they are under new management, you are looking at the reigning, defending Champions of the Co-Ed World.  Last year’s Champs, Team Albanese, have a new captain but the same great roster for this Season and it is going to take a whole lot for any Team to knock them from their perch.  This is the 4th Summer of the Chicago Co-Ed League and until last Summer there was a Co-Ed Dynasty running rampant on the rest of the League.. Team Bartlett had won Back2Back Crowns in the League’s first 2 seasons and made it back to the Championship Game last year before getting ejected from the mantle.. More on them below..

Anyways, back to this year and this Team.. They are the favorites and they started their quest for a Repeat with an impressive victory on the gridiron last Monday Night.. They are in for a real tough Game though next week.. We’ll get back to that shortly as well..

2. Team Rosenthal (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – Currently tied for 1st with 35 points.

The youngest Team in the League haven’t wasted anytime making a name for themselves in the Co-Ed League.  They are a cast of Rookies, besides for Captain Rosenthal, and the learning curve that usually comes with the first All Sports Series League has seemingly been wiped away for them.. They’ve gotten Week 1 Volleyball and Week 2 Hoops Ws under their belts.. seemingly with ease.. What should scare the rest of the League is that they really are just coming together as a group and they should only improve. The sky is the limit for Team Rosenthal.

3. Team Lazarov (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 4th with 25 points.

Team Lazarov was the hardest Team to place in the first set of Rankings for the year.. Allow me to explain.. The guys that make up Team Lazarov are the most successful in All Sports Series history. This is not hyperbole.. This is fact.  These guys are part of the Dorfman/Hakimian/Lalez Dynasty that has simply dominated competition since All Sports Series began back in 2010.  They have the first Suburbs College/Prep Crown ever (2010). They won a Chicago Men’s League Crown (2012). Currently they are the Back2Back Chicago Hoops League Champs as well.  They are the gold standard.  Then, there are the off-season additions..  In the off-season, Captain Lazarov proposed to one of the best female athletes in the League — Danielle Bemoras — and subsequently poached her from Team Bemoras (congrats to you both!!).  Then if that wasn’t enough, in the days leading up to Week 1 they struck a deal with the aforementioned former Captain of Back2Back Co-Ed Champions, Ellie Bartlett, to add even more of a Championship pedigree.  So, can they put it all together and add another Crown to case?  Wouldn’t bet against them…

4. Team Wolter (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 1st with 35 points.

Another group of All Sports Series “Rookies” and this group currently shares a spot atop the Standings.  Team Wolter (pictured above) looked excellent in their first real action this past Monday Night. While they have now finished their Hoops action for the Summer, basketball usually has a very good indication of broad athleticism and it is not far-fethched to say they should translate well to each sport this Summer.  They should be near the top all Summer and will give the other top squads a real run for their money..

5. Team Fischer (Jam ‘n Honey) – Currently in 3rd with 27.5 points.

Captain Fischer is back at it for her 4th Summer in All Sports Series.  She has played in more Co-Ed Games than any other person in these specific League’s history (this is easy Math as she has played in the Madison Co-Ed League as well..).  Along with her come a few familiar faces from season’s past and then a host of new players who felt right at home earning a big W in their first night.  A new addition to their Team, but an All Sports Series vet — Caroline Schwartz will add some extra punch for them this Summer. Great pick up by the Captain.  They are hungry for a Crown and just might get it this year.

6. Team Evans (The Karyn Collection) – Currently tied for 7th with 7.5 points.

Team Evans might be the most interesting group to watch this Summer. They have a cast of great athletes.. Most have All Sports Series experience and success for that matter.. The guys on this squad just did the unthinkable as they took home Championships in both Chicago Spring Leagues that just wrapped (Men’s Floor Hockey and Co-Ed Kickball). The girls on the squad earned the #3 seed a year ago in the Co-Ed League. They can really play.  They lost a tough one with the Defending Champs in Flag Football on Monday Night but before too long they will be at or near the top.. Book it.

7. Team UM Alumni (SLA Insurance) – Currently in 6th with 9 points.

The last Team into the Rankings this Week is a new squad to All Sports Series.  They are made up of University of Michigan Alumni and they seem to be really gelling as a Team.  Many did not know each other into the Season so it usually takes time to learn each other’s strengths and weakness.. A big aspect in that is just getting to know your teammates. They are well on their way and will be in position for a late-season charge for sure.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Cliq (Trifecta Grill) – Currently in 10th with 0 points.

New squad for this Summer is a hybrid group from 1871/Cliq and co.  By the way, stay tuned on more from the Cliq app.. They drew a tough assignment in their first real night of All Sports Series as Team Lazarov on the Flag Football field is no easy task.  They have a huge Team and once they figure out how to utilize everyone’s strengths they will be humming right along.  They should hop into the Rankings in no time.

Team Free Agent (Kelly Parker Home Collective) – Currently tied for 7th with 7.5 points.

This Free Agent squad has a lot of potential.. As is the case with many groups who are just meeting as the Season gets going.. It takes a bit of time to come together.. The beauty of it is, they have over a month to do just that.  They seemed to get better as their Hoops Game went on last Monday Night.. A great sign.. Expecting great things from this bunch.

Team Friedman (Muchacha Salsa) – Currently tied for 7th with 7.5 points.

This is a very fun bunch.. win, lose or draw.. Word going around is that they will excel in dodgeball and kickball.. We’ll see how that turns out but expecting big things! They had the unlucky task to try and keep Team Rosenthal’s high fliers away from the rim in Hoops on Monday Night.. They get the UM Alumni squad in Softball next Monday Night in Lincoln Park!

That’s it for the Power Rankings. Have a great weekend and see you next Monday Night!
