2015 Chicago Men’s – Week 2 (June 22)

Updated: June 26, 2015

Week 2 of the Chicago Men’s League has come and gone.. With it came a few big time performances and we can now officially say that everyone has truly opened the season.  For those who are checking out their first Power Rankings article.. Here’s what you can expect each and every week.. A Link to the Weekly Highlight Video (Weeks 1 and 2 are in this first Video of the Summer).  As well, you can count on a wrap-up of the week that was and a glance at the week ahead. Just keep in mind most of the Rankings are done based on a statistical analysis, I (Holden) don’t see nearly enough of each Game for these Rankings to be anything more than that.. They also have no barring on the actual Standings.

Now that the intro is out of the way.. The Men’s League powered by Stephen Le Brocq has a tremendously deep and talented group this Summer.. Lots of familiar faces will standout but there is a new crop of Teams fresh off their Campus Leagues in Madison and Champaign (and other schools as well).. These young guys are not to be taken lightly.. Monday was the first indication of that! OK let’s Rank ‘Em!

Week 2 Power Rankings

1. Team Watts (VIP Express Limo) – Currently tied for 9th with 13 points.

How does a Team who just got blown out in Softball take hold of the #1 spot after Week 2?  Well this is no ordinary squad.. These are the reigning, defending Chicago Men’s League Champs we are talking about.. They took one on the chin this past week in softball, which historically has not been their strong suit.. They did put up 129 points in Week 1 Hoops.. So before everyone gets excited that they are experiencing a Championship hangover, know they are still the real deal.

No Team has ever went Back2Back in the Chicago Men’s League.. They will have a tough road as this League is as stacked as ever before.. I just wouldn’t bet against them..

Want the #1 spot?  Knock them off (one more time).

2. Team Zimmerman (AMPY) – Currently tied for 2nd with 33 points.

For those who played in 2014, you may think the top of the Power Rankings look pretty similar to where we left things a year ago, and you’d be right.  Team Zimmerman finished in 2nd last Summer after a 3OT Championship thriller that left them counting down the days to get retribution.. Since last Summer, the core of this Group had an extremely impressive run in the Chicago Hoops League which saw them win 3 Playoff Games in one night.. Just incredible stuff. They got their first taste of real action on Monday Night and looked like their usual, strong selves. They won in Floor Hockey 8-1 and you will hard-pressed to find a bunch who want it more than this one.

3. Team Hadelman (Theory) – Currently in 5th with 31.5 points.

Team Hadelman is about to embark on their 3rd year in the Chicago Men’s League.. Their first season they made it all the way to the Championship Game and last year they followed up with another trip to the Final4.  There is not a more talented Team in the League than Team Hadelman. They have everything you could want in an All Sports League and proved it Monday Night by getting a big softball W, something that has plagued them in recent seasons.. They will be heard from at season’s end.. Next week they have a HUGE Clash with Defending Champs Team Watts in Floor Hockey.. It’s our SportsLock “Lock of the Week” — We have over 13.5 Goals coming in that one!

4. Team Fallows (Bekins Lake County) – Currently in 1st with 38 points.

The Team that stands alone after 2 Weeks in the Standings likely has a gripe since they are coming at #4 in the Power Rankings, but Team Fallows is no stranger to how this all works.. Getting to the top of the mountain takes more than a couple of wins and the Teams ranked #1-3 are slotted there based on 2014 results.. This is a cast full of All Sports vets and they’ve added a few new pieces that may finally put them over the top!  Many of these guys played with Team Kozin who finished in 2nd in the Chicago Hoops League this Spring.. They are a force and seemingly flying under the radar..

5. Team Maione (SportsLock) – Currently in 6th with 25 points.

Most Teams would be happy to start out in the Top 5 of this tremendously deep League.. Team Maione is not one of them.  Each of them have tasted All Sports Series championships in the past.. As a unit they were the 2013 Chicago Men’s League Champs.  If Team Watts wants a first hand account of how tough it is to repeat.. Here’s their Exhibit A.  Every Team in the League was gunning for this group a year ago.. They also have suffered tough defeats in the Chicago Hoops League Playoffs finishing 2nd and then 3rd the past two seasons..  A year later and they are rejuvenated and out to get what they think is rightfully theirs.. It’s been a bit for them in terms of Championships (for them) and the odds would say it’s their time.. In their first action of the season they took it to Team Hakimian on the diamond.  Get familiar with this bunch near the top.

6. Team Apuli (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 2nd with 33 points.

Another cast of All Sports vets that know how important it is to get off to a hot start. Captain Apuli and co. have long searched for an All Sports Series crown and this just might be the year.  They’ve started off great with a win over Team Kornblatt and most recently a last-second Floor Hockey W over Team Shlofrock.  They are a legit squad that gathers W even if no one is paying as much attention to them as they should.  Great start and it will be even greater if they can knock off Team Goldman in Flag Football next Monday Night!

7. Team Hakimian (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Navy) – Currently tied for 9th with 13 points.

THE Dynasty.  Apologies are likely in order as we are already at #7 before getting to the most successful franchise in All Sports Series history. Bar none.  Some may know these guys as Team Hakimian or Team Lalez or maybe even Team Lazarov in the Co-Ed League..  Whatever the name, they know how to win All Sports Series Championships.  This past Spring they wrapped up their second consecutive Chicago Hoops League Crown.. The first and only Team to ever Repeat in a Chicago Men’s League.  They also won the first ever All Sports Series back in 2010 and followed that up with another Crown in the Summer of 2012.  They are the gold standard.  In recent Summer Leagues they have managed to put themselves in tough spots when it comes to playoff seeding due to a few Regular Season losses.. They’d be the first to tell you softball is not their strongest sport and now that it is in the rear view, they should be good to go from here on out.  Oh and the Original Captain from the very first Championship Team is BACK.  Everyone, please, a round of applause for the one and only Daniel Dorfman.

8. Team Gross (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – Currently tied for 2nd with 33 points.

The first “new” Team in the Power Rankings — Team Gross — only they are not new to All Sports Series.. They’ve had two successful campaigns in the Champaign League in and now they’ve graduated they are ready to make a name for themselves down in Chicago.  They got a big W over Team Kaplan in Hoops on Monday Night and looked impressive in doing so. These guys are driving the charge of the next generation and they may not wait to be given the keys.. They might take them.. Next Week they’ll take on another young upstart… #9…

9. Team Sternberg (Kelly Parker Home Collective) – Currently tied for 9th with 13 points.

Allow me to re-introduce Team Sternberg.  Many will remember Team Holzman from a year ago. They were a Final4 squad and the Team that won the Regular Season in Chicago Men’s League..  Well a few of Team Holzman’s squad have combined with Team Max from the Madison Leagues..  Team Max are reigning Back2Back Madison League Champs. They won just about every Game they played in their 2 seasons in Madison.. To add to that are several past College/Prep League Champs (Team Maione and Team Sternberg)..  This crew has assembled all with past glory and have been anticipating their days in the Chicago Leagues for sometime.. What you have here.. is the Future.  And the future scored 116 points on Monday Night in Hoops.  Get used to it.

10. Team Bemoras (popchips) – Currently tied for 9th with 13 points.

Team Bemoras is another name that past All Sports Series Players will instantly recognize.  The core group has been competing in the Chicago Co-Ed League since it’s inception and now they’ve decided to make the transition to the Men’s League. Along with them is a Team Horwitz bunch from a year ago who finished the Regular Season in the Men’s League as the #5 seed.  These guys are not to be taken lightly. Next week they’ve got Team Palmer in Hoops. Also, want to give a big feel better to the Wiz Jon Horwitz!

11. Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 9th with 13 points.

In the very first rendition of All Sports Series back in 2010, there were 12 Teams.  Many of them still play to this day and Team Kornblatt are one of those groups.  This group of warriors called Camp Ojibwa home for many Summers and since returning from Eagle River have been searching for that elusive All Sports Series crown. Historically they have been a tough Regular Season squad that excels in the non-Hoops sports and have fallen in the Playoffs due to Hoops struggle.  However, this year in their 6th go around, they have new hope… The playoff formats have changed and their successful regular seasons may now earn them an opportunity to skip Hoops in the playoffs in exchange for Floor Hockey.. Of course, that will require them to get the job done early.. They got their first W of the season on Monday Night.. In Hoops.  So scratch everything that was just said. O.J.I.B.W.A. Let’s go!

12. Team Cruse (Sandusky Cabinets) – Currently tied for 9th with 13 points.

Our first “Rookie” squad to come into the Rankings is Team Cruse.  They got a big W in their first All Sports Series action on Monday Night and they really could (should) have been lumped in with the crop of youngsters above (Team Gross and Team Sternberg), but we don’t have the past success to fall back on just yet.. Captain Cruse’s bunch is a deep and athletic squad who are going to give Teams fits all summer long.. They do have one Player who has been in All Sports Series before.. Ryan Gately competed in the 2013 Champaign League, and in that League, he won the Championship along with some guys who are currently playing for Team Kaplan.. Team Cruse will certainly call on his playoff experience come August.

13. Team Cohen (Manny’s Deli) – Currently tied for 9th with 13 points.

Much has been made about the new and old guard so far in the Power Rankings.. Team Cohen is a big part of the “old.”  Captain Andy and co. have been playing in the Chicago Men’s League since it’s first year in 2011.  They’ve had lots of Regular Season success in their history but have not had that one magical Playoff run, yet.. Much like Team Kornblatt, they’ve usually fallen victim to Playoff Hoops Games.  They’ve addressed that issue in spades during the off-season as they made several key pick-ups who should be key in Hoops W.  They certainly did in Week 1 when they made an impressive debut.  They took a step back this past week on the diamond but they can’t dwell on it as they have a gigantic Floor Hockey Game coming up next week with Team Hakimian.

14. Team Shlofrock (Crystal Lake CDJ) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

The only winless Team in the actual Rankings this week is Team Shlofrock and frankly they could (should) be higher than this.  A year ago, they were the #3 overall seed in the Chicago Men’s League before falling to the Dynasty Team Hakimian in what was the best Game in the Sweet16.  They are the real deal and a couple losses (to good Teams) aren’t going to shake them.  It’s obviously good for the rest of the League that they don’t have nay points just yet.. But they are coming. No doubt.

15. Team Palmer (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 7th with 20 points.

Team Palmer is comprised of many Rookies as well but Captain Palmer has played in past All Sports Series Leagues. He has a Regular Season title under his belt as a member of Team Lewis back in 2012 and that experience will surely help these guys along the way.  They are in good shape as they are in the top half of the Standings exiting Week 2. A key 13 points will be on the line when they take on Team Bemoras in Hoops next week.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Goldman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Orange) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Team Goldman has some All Sports Series vets on their squad along with a host of Rookies. They are a talented bunch that have drawn the short-end of the stick when it comes to the Schedule thus far. They’ve played two of the best Teams in the League through two weeks.. In fact, they’ve played the 2 Teams that competed for the Crown a year ago.. It can/will only get easier from here.. Look for them to make a splash soon.

Team Kaplan (Weil Foot & Ankle) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Their Captain has fallen victim to an 0ff-the-court injury and they’ll need a week or two to rebound.. Luckily for them they have many capable leaders including Brian Harris who has Captained several successful All Sports Series Teams in the past.. Some of these guys have tasted the Crown before and there’s plenty of time for them to rebound and make a run at this year’s..

Team Lehrman (Muchacha Salsa) – Currently tied for 7th with 20 points.

The youngest Team in the field has a lot of potential.. They are going to be fun to watch as each week they’ll feel they are playing with house money.  No one is expecting anything from them and they have enough talent to really shake things up this Summer.

Team Manilow (SLA Insurance) – Currently tied for 17th with 0 points.

Lost a tough one to Team Cruse but they were short-handed in that one and when they get back to full-strength you can expect them to make a leap into the Rankings and up the Standings. There’s not a nicer dude than Captain Jack and they have a solid core.. Two weeks aren’t going to shake these guys.. They’ll be just fine.

Team Sharrin (Sunset Foods) – Currently in 16th with 6.5 points.

Someone had to play Team Sternberg first and it happened to be Team Sharrin. They too are a bit short-handed for another week or so but when their full crew is here, you can expect big things from them. They take on familiar foes Team Manilow next week in Hoops and the Winner will certainly hop into the Rankings.

That’s it for us this week. Have a great weekend and see you Monday Night!
