2015 Chicago Men’s – Week 4 (July 6)

By
Updated: July 9, 2015

3 Weeks remain.  That’s all that stands between us and the Playoffs.  Tons will change by then as each Team has two Games left before the all-important Volleyball Tourney to end the Regular Season.  The Standings are beginning to spread out and will continue to do so as the weeks roll on.. Still plenty of time to take care of business but the #PlayoffPush is officially upon us. Before we get to the Power Rankings powered by Lawyer Stephen Le Brocq, here is the Weekly Highlight Video!  OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Sternberg (Kelly Parker Home Collective) – Currently tied for 6th with 46 points.

This is sort of an unprecedented leap into the #1 spot.. The Chicago Men’s League is the deepest League in All Sports Series. From top to bottom 1 through 20.. Each Team can go.. Which makes each week unpredictable.. That being said, it is extremely rare for the each of the Top 3 from the previous week to all stumble on the same Monday Night.. It just doesn’t happen..  However, this past Monday it did.. Which provided an opening at the top and last week’s #6 Team Sternberg sprinted right through that opening.  Frankly, the Ranking is very well deserved.  We’ve been touting these Chicago League newcomers as a group who have experienced significant All Sports Series success in the past and while their surge to the top may be a surprise to some mainstays.. It’s not a surprise to them.  They are 100% a legit Championship Contender.  You know what’s fun?  Next week, they get to play Hoops against the new #2…

2. Team Cruse (Sandusky Cabinets) – Currently tied for 2nd with 53 points.

Also making a huge leap into #2 is virtual Rookies Team Cruse.  They have been on a tear since Week 2 and are showing no signs of letting up.. They got a big W in Flag Football on Monday Night against Team Lehrman under the rain.. Sean O’Grady has come up huge for these guys and it’s certainly a name that everyone should get used to hearing about.  They have been rising and rising up the Rankings for weeks and now they have reached #2 with an impending battle for #1 with Team Sternberg on the horizon in Hoops next week!

3. Team Zimmerman (AMPY) – Currently tied for 6th with 46 points.

Back into the Top 3 for Team Zimmerman and that’s where the 2014 Runners-Up feel right at home.  Frankly, this was a gigantic W for them, as they took down former Undefeated #1 Team Fallows and in Hoops.  These are the statement Ws that help Team morale come Playoff time.  It’s important that a group can look back on key moments in the Regular Season and say, “we already did this, we can definitely do xyz.” This past Monday will provide that for them. Riaz Hoveydai keyed the W with 22 points.  No time to celebrate however as they face Team Apuli in softball next week!

4. Team Watts (VIP Express Limo) – Currently tied for 15th with 26 points.

The Defending Champs (pictured above) got back to work on Monday Night and picked up their 2nd W of the Season.  For years their bread and butter has been on the Hoops Court.. Their size, speed and shooting are just too much to overcome and they took it to last week’s #3 Team Apuli early and often.  Chad Murphy was vital with 27 points in this one.  They have an absolutely huge Game coming up on Monday Night as they face fellow titan Team Hakimian in a match-up of two Teams that plan on hoisting the Crown.. Both Teams are currently tied in the Standings staring straight up at more Teams than they’d like to this late in the season..  Big. Big. Big Game.

5. Team Fallows (Bekins Lake County Movers) – Currently in 1st with 58 points.

They picked a good week to take their first L. Yes, they take a bit of a slide down the Rankings.. Still being top 5 is nothing to be upset about.. More importantly, through 4 Weeks they are still sitting alone atop the Standings.  They dropped a tough one to Team Zimmerman on Monday Night in what we could only hope is a Playoff Preview. Josh Davis went for 20 in this one. They have Rivals Team Cohen in Flag Football next week so they’ve likely already forgotten this week and are game-planning for next Monday.

6. Team Palmer (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 2nd with 53 points.

Another Monday, another W for Team Palmer.  They took a big leap this Week as well.. They were at #12 last week but they’ve gone on quite a run here and deserve to be recognized.. They are tied for 2nd in the Standings after all. Chris Lashmet was very impressive as QB for them this past week as he led the offense down the field for 4 TDs. They have Hoops with Team Manilow in Hoops this coming Monday Night and will look to crack the Top 5 next week!

7. Team Hadelman (Theory) – Currently in 5th with 51.5 points.

They lost a tough one with the Dynasty Team Hakimian on Monday Night but still find themselves sitting in 5th in the Standings as we exit Week 4.  They are in the teeth of their schedule currently as they have Team Maione coming up in Flag Football next week in what will be another battle of Championship hopefuls.  Win or lose.. Here’s the deal with Team Hadelman.. They may be the best Hockey Team in the League and are surely one of the best Hoops squads.. They are as good of a bet for the Final4 as any…

8. Team Shlofrock (Crystal Lake CDJ) – Currently tied for 11th with 33 points.

They were 12 seconds and two big shots from Jason Domash away from dropping in the Power Rankings and in a place of the Standings where scoreboard watching would become apart of their daily routines.. That’s why you play until the final buzzer sounds..  Team Shlofrock found themselves trailing late in their Hoops Game with Team Cohen.  They were down 4 when Domash went to the hole and scored on an And-1.. The lead was cut to 1. They managed to steal the in-bounds pass and call time-out with a couple ticks left.  The ball once again found it’s way into Domash’s hands.. He went to the left elbow, pump-faked, turned, fired and sunk it. Ball Game. This is a Team that really needed this after dropping two heartbreakers to open the season.  Next week they’ll have the hungry Team Goldman in Softball.

9. Team Maione (SportsLock) – Currently tied for 9th with 38 points.

This was the Team Maione we have been waiting to see all Summer long.  They were just on fire.  It’s the Team Maione that holds previous Crowns and countless Final4 appearances.   This was the group that others fear on the schedule.  Just in time.. Nick Wieczorek had 29, Captain Anthony had 27 and Mikey Weisberg had 23 in the W.  They have a gigantic Flag Football Game looming with Team Hadelman next week.  That’s as must-see as it gets.

10. Team Hakimian (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Navy) – Currently tied for 15th with 26 points.

Team Hakimian knew prior to last week that they were about to enter their toughest stretch of the Schedule.  Back to Back weeks with Team Hadelman in Hoops and Defending Champs Team Watts in Football.. Truth be told they would have likely taken a split and gladly moved on.. Well, they already got one W in the first part of this gauntlet and now move on to what could possibly be the toughest test in All Sports Series.  Team Watts on the Football field is something to see..  This is going to be epic in a night chalk-full of big Football Games.  Tons of Playoff implications as well.. Both Teams are tied near the bottom of the Standings right now.. Week 5 is coming and it’s now or never..

11. Team Apuli (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 2nd with 53 points.

Team Apuli is the group that will have their hands in the air with the Rankings this week.. Last week they came in at #3 following an Undefeated start to the Season.  They are still tied for 2nd in the Standings despite taking their first L of the Season this past Monday Night to the Defending Champs Team Watts.. It was a tough slide but the League has so many great Teams and each week 10 Teams Win which means Teams have to fall when they don’t..  Look for them to climb right back up next week however.. Team Apuli has historically been a tough softball Team and they’ll need to be when they play Team Zimmerman next Monday Night.

12. Team Sharrin (Sunset Foods) – Currently in 8th with 43.5 points.

Two weeks in a row they’ve picked up close Wins.. Not only is it big for them from a Standings vantage point but also these are the types of Ws that they’ll be able to point to in close Playoff contests.  Captain Sharrin helped key the W here both at the plate and in the field.. This crew is going to continue to fly under the radar as they got off to a slow start but that should actually work to their advantage.  Dark Horse for an Opening Round upset right here.  Just remember this.

13. Team Bemoras (popchips) – Currently tied for 9th with 38 points.

There’s no telling what will happen to Team Bemoras during the rest of the Season.. They have Team Sharrin next week, a Team just ahead of them in the Rankings and will have a chance to get Ws in 3 of their last 4 outings.. What we do know is that this past Monday Night will be the highlight of their Regular Season.  They took on Rivals Team Kornblatt in a messy softball affair that ended with their hands raised after the final out.  Can’t win a Championship every week but you can certainly win bragging rights that can be talked about for a long time to come.. Shoutout to Howie Lamm who fielded from the pitcher’s mound like Greg Maddux on Monday Night.

14. Team Cohen (Manny’s Deli) – Currently tied for 11th with 33 points.

They had their hearts ripped out on Monday Night after losing on a buzzer beater in Hoops to Team Shlofrock.  That’s the last anyone should talk about it on their squad. They are clearly a talented bunch and are much improved from a year ago..  Focus on the positive and the future.. For instance, Rivals Team Fallows on the gridiron looms next week. Plenty to get excited about right there.. A big Game in terms of the Standings as well.

15. Team Gross (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – Currently tied for 11th with 33 points.

Had a tough time with Team Palmer in Flag Football on Monday Night.  They still find themselves in great shape in terms of the Playoffs. They have an important Hoops Game with Team Lehrman this coming Monday Night.. They both are tied for 11th with a couple other Teams.. The Winner can launch themselves back into top half of the Standings and back up the Power Rankings.  Captain Gross and co. have everything they need to get it done and they’ve looked solid in Hoops thus far. Expect them to turn it around.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Goldman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Orange) – Currently tied for 18th with 0 points.

Here’s the deal. Their schedule has been brutal.  It’s hard to know exactly who’s schedule will be the worst before the season starts but right around now you can start to piece that together.. If Team Goldman didn’t have the hardest, it’s certainly top few.. There’s nothing they can do about that now.. Here’s where they stand.. Playoffs are still right there.  They are going to be good VBall Team. Take my word for it.. Just need to steal a W before Week 7.

Team Kaplan (Weil Foot & Ankle) – Currently tied for 18th with 0 points.

They’ve lost some close ones and this Monday was no exception.. They are knocking on the door of breaking through and if they can manage to do that this coming week they still have plenty of time to not just make the Playoffs but get some momentum heading into them.. Team Kornblatt awaits them in Floor Hockey next week in a Game that both Teams need.

Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently in 17th with 13 points.

Historically they start hot.. Sputter in the middle, figure it out before the Playoffs and then lose in Playoff Hoops at some point down the road. Taking the positives out of their lackluster start, they needed to shake-up that pattern and now their backs are firmly against the wall. They have a near must-win Game coming up in Floor Hockey on Monday Night with Team Kaplan who is happing to hop them in the Standings.  This is an original-12 All Sports Series Franchize and they are not going to just go silently into the night.. This is a Playoff Team. They know it. Everyone knows it.  They just need to go out there and take care of business. New chapter starts on Monday.

Team Lehrman (Muchacha Salsa) – Currently tied for 11th with 33 points.

Lost a close one with #2 Team Cruse which speaks to how good Team Lehrman can be. They were just a couple of plays away from stealing it. Right now, they are firmly entrenched into a Playoff spot and they are going to surprise some people when they get there. Team Gross awaits in Hoops next week!

Team Manilow (SLA Insurance) – Currently tied for 18th with 0 points.

Would they have rather won on Monday Night? Yeah, so would have the other 9 Teams that took an L as well. This group is very solid up and down.. They’ve had some tough/close losses and eventually their end-of-Game luck will turn.  They have a couple very winnable Games on the horizon. Tf they keep playing the way they have in recent weeks they are going to sneak right into the Playoffs, then anything is possible!

That’s it for this week! Have a great weekend and see you Monday Night!
