2015 Chicago Spring Leagues – Floor Hockey & Kickball (March 22)

By
Updated: March 25, 2015

The last Undefeated Team has fallen.. That’s right, each and every Team in both Kickball and Floor Hockey have now taken at least one Loss this Season and why are we leading with that? Well, the Floor Hockey Playoffs aren’t too far off and it’s important to know that no one is invincible and there are no certainties this time of year.. More on Hockey Playoffs below. Quick bit of housekeeping, we have Games this coming Sunday (March 29) but will be off the following week for the Holidays (April 5). Before we get to everything that happened this past week, here’s a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video!  Kickball’s turn to go first.. Let’s Rank ’em!

Kickball Power Rankings

1. Team Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. – 3-2 – Currently 2nd in Standings

Back on top of the Power Rankings after an up and down, extra inning, walk-0ff (caught on camera) W with Team popchips on Sunday.  The entire Team really kicked the ball well at the plate last weekend.. Some too well.. More on that below.. They have a gigantic double header coming up with #2 Team Muchacha Salsa this Sunday that could likely decide who stays atop the Rankings for a while and could go a long way in the race for the #1 Seed in the Playoffs.  They have reached the midway point of their Regular Season schedule, with two double headers looming in the next few weeks.. If they can keep the offense up, they will be tough to defeat.

2. Team Muchacha Salsa – 4-1 – Currently 1st in Standings

Took a minor step down in the Rankings this week despite still being alone at the top of the Standings.  They will face off with #1 next week in not but TWO games and, thus, have more than enough of an opportunity to hop right back into #1 in the Power Rankings.  They have 5 Games remaining, with a couple double headers, and if they can manage to get a sweet against Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co. this coming weekend then they will likely lock up the #1 seed for the Playoffs!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team FGK Services Inc. – 3-3 – Currently 3rd in Standings

Matt “Howie” Howard is laying down the law for his squad as of late and has been pitching gems out there.. Can it continue?

Team popchips – 1-5 – Currently 4th in Standings

No one in the League has a tougher Captain.. I’m talking Hockey League as well.. That’s for sure.. For those not in attendance Captain and Pitcher Emily Fishman took a liner right back in the face on Sunday afternoon. She would soon re-enter the Game and helped lead her Team on a ferocious comeback. They ended up dropping the Game in extras but they showed that they are never out of a Game and that is something awfully scare for other Teams come Playoff time!

Floor Hockey Power Rankings

Playoff Note: Next week will be the final week of the Regular Season. We have a very long (and full) Playoff schedule that will commence on April 12 (after the Holiday Break on the 5th).  Brief rundown on how the Playoffs will work.  There are 8 Teams. Everyone makes it. Each Round will actually be a Best-of-3 Series. Lots of Games to be played here.. There will be several double headers. The #1 Seed gets a BYE to the Semi-Finals as a reward for finishing in 1st.  Then the Teams that finish in 7th and 8th in the Regular Season will play in the “opening round” of the Playoffs.  The winner of that will face the #2 Seed in the Quarter Finals.  The other Quarter finals series will be 3 v 6 and 4 v 5.  Here’s the Bracket!  For Teams that are Eliminated early on, we will actually have time for moreGames as the weeks go by because not all of the Series will last 3 Games.  Scheduling of those Games will happen during the week. The Power Rankings below serve as a Playoff Scenarios piece as well.

1. Team Kowalczyk (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 5-1 – Currently tied for 1st in Standings

They finally dropped one on Sunday and with that the pressure of an undefeated season can be lifted from their shoulders.. They were missing basically their entire first line on Sunday and just couldn’t match Team Holzman’s offensive fire power. More on the 6-man attack below.. They are still in great shape for the 1 Seed as we enter the Final Week of the Regular Season.. A win and the #1 Seed is all theirs.. A Loss, and they could potentially fall to #3.. The #1 seed gets a bye to the final 4 so this is certainly an important one.

2. Team Widen (FGK Services Inc.) – 5-1 – Currently tied for 1st in Standings

They pulled into a tie for 1st place on Sunday afternoon with their W and #1 Team Kowalczyk’s Loss.. However, Team Kowalczyk holds the head to head tiebreaker over them.. No matter what happens on Sunday they’ll finish with at least the #2 Seed which means they face the Winner of the 7/8 Opening Round series.  A Win and a Team Kowalczyk loss means they could hop into first and a get a Bye to the Semis.  A loss and Team Holzman and Team Harris could tie them in the Standings but Team Widen beat both of those Teams head to head.  So they’ll be eagerly watching the scoreboards on Sunday.

3. Team Holzman (Chicago Deli) – 4-2 – Currently tied for 3rd in Standings

They have the longest win streak in the League and it’s no coincidence. They’ve been so impressive in the last month that they may be the favorites to take the whole thing no matter what their seed is come Playoff time.. Yes, Team Kowalczyk was short-handed on Sunday but so were they.. No one has figured out the 6-man offense yet and they are just running through people. They’ll have a tough Team Albanese next Sunday so nothing will be given to them easily.. Here’s the spot they find themselves in.. They are tied for 3rd but lost to Team Harris during Week 1 and, thus, will lose a tiebreaker with them.  So currently they really sit in 4th. They can’t pass Team Widen for tiebreak reasons as well.  A Win + losses from Team Kowalczyk and Team Harris could spring them into 2nd Place if both Lose or 3rd if 1 Lose.. Now a Loss to Team Albanese would actually drop them to 5th and a likely first round rematch with Team Albanese who’d jump them in the Standings to finish 4th. Still with me?  Lots of math involved..

4. Team Harris (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – 4-2 – Currently tied for 3rd in Standings

They were off this week after sweeping a double header last week. They’ll face Team Kornblatt next week.  They’ve lost head to head to Teams Kowalczyk and Widen so they can’t move up from 3rd even with a Win and Loss from either Team.. They could get jumped for 3rd however if they falter this coming week and Team Holzman Wins.

5. Team Albanese (Biaggi’s) – 3-3 – Currently 5th in Standings

They got a nice W on Sunday afternoon look like they are really finding their stride as a Team and in perfect time..  Playoff scenarios for them are simple.. Win and they will be the  4 seed.  They’ll tie Team Holzman at 4-3 and jump them with the head to head tiebreaker. They’d lose a tiebreaker with Team Harris so they can’t jump them.. If they lose, they’ll stay in 5th as no one can catch them from behind (they have a tiebreaker over Team Kornblatt).  Basically, they are going to be in the 4/5 matchup just a matter of who they will face.. A win over the hottest Team in the League – Team Holzman – would be a really nice confidence boost as they head into the Playoffs…

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Free Agent (Atomic Transport) – 0-6 – Currently 8th in Standings

They had a double header on Sunday and while neither Game went the way they wanted it to, they got valuable experience in the form of actually completing the double header.. Most Teams will have to go through their first in the Playoffs.. They will be able to look back on this weekend and know what line-up strategies to call upon. Also, worth noting they are getting better.  They will face Team Santomauro in the Opening Round Series when the Playoffs start on April 12, but first they have a date with #1 Team Kowalczyk this Sunday!

Team Kornblatt (Right Fit Personal Training) – 2-4 – Currently 6th in Standings

Got a big win and they are rightfully feeling pretty, pretty good.  They are going to be the #6 Seed when the Playoffs start, the only question is who will be the #3 seed?  Their win this past Sunday against Team Santomauro gave them a tiebreaker advantage and, thus, even with a loss on Sunday they can’t be caught.  They also would lose a potential tiebreaker with Team Albanese for 5th.  There’s a real possibility that they will have a Playoff Preview this Sunday as Team Harris currently sits in the #3 spot.. They’ve gotten exponentially better in the last few weeks as their full roster has finally come together.. The Playoff Series format gives them more time to gel as well..

Team Santomauro (the Street Hockey Shop) – 1-5 – Currently 7th in Standings

They dropped one to Team Kornblatt on Sunday afternoon and they are now locked into the Opening Round series with Team Free Agent starting on Sunday April 12.  Before that however they will tangle with #2 Team Widen this coming Sunday.  They didn’t have the advantage of coming into the season knowing everyone on the Team like most in the League and they have progressed a great deal with each passing week. It’s going to be fun to see them and Team Free Agent go toe to toe in the Opening Round Series as both want to wear Cinderella’s slipper for the rest of the dance..

That’s it for this week. Good Luck to everyone next Sunday!
