2015 Chicago Spring Leagues – Floor Hockey Playoffs & Kickball (April 12)

Updated: April 17, 2015

April means Playoff season in the Chicago Spring Leagues and along with the change in months comes a change in intensity.  The Floor Hockey League began their Playoffs on Sunday afternoon. A day that was filled with some great performances.  As for Kickball, next week is the final week of the Regular Season and there’s still some jockeying for position left to do.. Before we get into a Hockey Playoff Recap and final Regular Season Kickball Power Rankings — here’s the weekly Highlight Video!

Kickball Power Rankings

Brief Playoff Explanation:

The Kickball Playoffs will be a double-elimination Tourney where Regular Season seeding will have a strong influence on how many Games are needed to win the Championship.  Each Team starts in the “No Loss” Bracket.  Teams who Lose in the No Loss Bracket fall down to ELIMINATION GAME territory.. Losers of ELIMINATION GAMES are (you guessed it) Eliminated.  In Game 1 of the Playoffs the 3 and 4 Seeds will go head to head. The Loser as described above goes to the Elimination Bracket, while the Winner will stay in the No Loss Bracket and take on the 2 Seed in Game 2 of the Playoffs. The Game 2 (2 v. 3/4) Loser will take on the Team who lost in Game 1 in the first ELIMINATION GAME.  The Winner of Game 2 goes on to play the 1 Seed in the final No Loss Bracket Game.

If some of this seems unclear.. The Bracket will be posted before next week and it will become clearer.. Until then, you want to get as high up in the Standings as possible!

1. Team FGK Services Inc. – 6-3 – Currently tied for 1st in Standings

They are truly on a roll of epic proportion and with their latest W on Sunday they pulled into a tie with Team Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. for 1st in the Standings a week out from the Playoffs. What’s more important, they hold the head to head tiebreaker over Team Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. as they are 2-1 against them this Season.. That means Team FGK Services Inc. holds the fate of the 1 Seed in their hands.. If they beat Team Muchacha Salsa next week, you are looking at the #1 Seed.

2. Team Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. – 6-3 – Currently tied for 1st in Standings

They had their final Regular Season double header this past Sunday and although they were short-handed they still managed to come away with a split.  They did drop a big one against Team FGK Services Inc. whom they are tied with in 1st of the Standings.  They lose the head to head tiebreaker with them 1-2 as well.. That means, they’ll need to defeat Team popchips AND get a Team Muchacha Salsa victory over Team FGK Services to hop up into 1st place before the Playoffs begin. Otherwise, they’ll start in the 2nd spot.. Still a great place to be for a Championship run..

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Muchacha Salsa – 4-5 – Locked in 3rd for Playoffs

They were short-handed this week which was bad timing for a big double header.. They are locked into the #3 Seed for the Playoffs but they will still have a big say in how everything shakes down next week.. If they can defeat Team FGK Services Inc., they will open up the door for Team Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co. to slide into the #1 spot.

Team popchips – 2-7 – Locked in 4th for Playoffs

Big Big Win and just in time!  They have a chance to knock off a Team tied for 1st this coming week and head into the Playoffs on a two-game Win-Streak and all the confidence in the world.  This is your Cinderella team right here.. So, will the shoe fit?

Floor Hockey Playoff Recap

Opening Round Series (Best of 3)

7. Team Santoamauro (Street Hockey Shop) v. 8. Team Free Agent (Atomic Transport) – 8. Team Free Agent Wins Series 2-0

The Opening Round Series features two squads who had to take the Regular Season to just get to know each other both on and off the court.. Both were groups of Free Agents pulled together with hopes of making a late season surge toward the Crown.  Stars aligned and had them compete in the Opening Round Series with a spot in the Quarterfinals against 2. Team Widen on the line. These Two Teams met a few weeks back and it was one of the more exciting Games of the season.. Team Santomauro came back at the end of the 3rd for a comeback W.

Team Free Agent had been counting down the days to the Rematch and in Game 1 their Offense took it to the undermanned Team Santomauro crew.  Team Free Agent Won Game 1 and Game 2 to take the Series 2-0 with great offensive performances from Sam Witt Bryan Halpert.  Captain Paul Nelson added a hat trick as well and became the first Captain of a Team to ever win a Playoff series in All Sports Series history..  They will move on to take on 2. Team Wide in the Quarters next week.

F0r Team Santomauro, they picked the wrong week to just be down on guys and it really put them behind the 8-ball. They did get better as the season went on and they can be serious players with an addition or two for years to come in the Floor Hockey League. Thanks for playing!

Quarterfinals Series (Best of 3)

4. Team Holzman (Chicago Deli) v. 5. Team Albanese (Biaggi’s) – Teams split 1-1

We knew before the first puck (ball) was even dropped that we were going to be in store for two great Games in this Series on Sunday. During the final week of the Regular Season these Two squads battled into what was the first OT Game of the Season which Team Holzman took..  The strategies of the Teams were hot topics coming into this one as well.. Team Holzman, as everyone now knows, has been utilizing the 6-man out tactic.. Of course that means no Goalie.  Team Albanese’s size provides an interesting wrinkle in Team Holzman’s plan on spreading everyone out and passing throughout the court..

In Game 1, Team Albanese was able to get out on top early and often.. They built a lead and it really threw Team Holzman for a loop as they had not been playing from behind very much since they switched to the 6-man out routine.  Once Team Albanese grabbed the lead they were able to use their size and skill to take the pace out of the Game and really suffocated the Team Holzman offense.  Goalie Ted Robinson made some great saves in this one as well and when the final buzzer sounded it was 5. Team Albanese Winning Game 1.

In Game 2, Team Holzman was able to strike fast and the Team we saw during the Regular Season was back! With the lead this Team is tough to beat as they really wear on you and the fact that this was the second Game of their constant attack just made life difficult for Team Albanese. Team Holzman played like their backs were against the wall in this one — and they were!  Team Albanese did mount a great comeback in the 3rd period of this one but just ran out of time and Team Holzman took Game 2. We are in store for our first ever deciding Game 3 next Sunday! The Winner will immediately take on 1. Team Kowalczyk in Game 1 of the Semi-Finals.

3. Team Harris (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) v. 6. Team Kornblatt (Right Fit Personal Training) – 3. Team Harris Wins Series 2-0

3. Team Harris was rumored to be a bit short-handed coming into this week — an untimely place to be undermanned — however, when the dust settled their depth shined through.. They were able to build big leads in both Games 1 and 2 — while keeping a steady stream of shots headed towards Team Kornblatt Goalie – Marc Singer all day. Singer was excellent in net by the way.. As was Team Harris Goalie, Jeremy Posner.  3. Team Harris won the Series 2-0 and they are the 2nd Team to lock up a spot in the Semi-Finals.  They will wait for 2. Team Widen and 7. Team Free Agent to play next week!

For Team Kornblatt, as they walk away from the Floor Hockey League they immediately turn to pre-season mode for the Chicago Men’s League this Summer.  They are main-stays in All Sports Series and with the new Playoff tweak (Floor Hockey is joining the early rounds of the Playoffs with Basketball) they can use this Spring League as a way to build toward their ultimate goal — winning an All Sports Series crown.

That’s it for this Week. See you next Sunday for another huge afternoon of Games!
