2015 Madison – Week 1 (Sept. 15)

Updated: September 21, 2015

And we’re off!  Tuesday Night saw the start of both the Madison Co-Ed and Men’s Leagues with an action packed slate of Flag Football Games. It was a beautiful night that a couple Teams will look back on come Thanksgiving as the start of their Championship Journey..   We’ll get to both sets of Power Rankings in just a bit.. For those playing in their first All Sports Series League, this is what you can expect from the weekly Power Rankings article.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-5 (Men’s) with the 3 UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically, while the Top 2 Teams in the Co-Ed League will get Ranked as well.  There will also be a link to the Weekly Highlight Video (<– click) each and every week.   One more thing, if you ever want any info on all things Madison League (Schedule, Stats etc.) — Just go to the Menu above .. Campus Leagues > Madison (that’s your hub!)

One more thing before we get to the first version of the Power Rankings.. We have a brand new MVP Sponsor this Fall.. Student City has joined our cast of incredible Sponsors and they are offering up great deals on Spring Break trips to All Sports Series players..  If you want to learn more about that or any of our other Sponsors (like CEA Study Abroad and the grants they provide students to go abroad!!) just fill out the contact form on the website above..

This week we’ll start with the Men’s Power Rankings and next week Co-Ed will go first! OK Let’s Rank ’em!

Madison Men’s Power Rankings

1. Team AEPi SR (Club Tavern Gold) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

The Madison Men’s League is going to have a very different feel in 2015.  The big, bad wolf aka the Back2Back Champs aka Team Max has graduated and moved onto the Chicago Leagues.. That means for the first time in Madison Men’s League history, some other Team will take the Crown.. It’s going to be interesting to see if one Team can establish themselves as a clear front-runner in the coming weeks..

Enter the newly minted #1 Team.. Team AEPi SR.  As a group they are entering their 3rd Season in Madison and are eagerly anticipating their run on the top of the mountain.. They look much different than they have in the past.. Former Captain Brad Holway is now playing in the Champaign League after a Spring Semester Transfer and new Captain Aaron Lester has taken the reigns. Along with the passing of the “C”.. They added a big-time mercenary in the form of 5th year Max Shulruff.  Those familiar with the League will now that name as he was part of the core that won both Crowns with Team Max.  He is the only Player in the Men’s League with Championship experience and that will go a long way!

In Week 1 they looked great as they took down Team KSig with the largest margin of victory through the whole night of Games. QB Jonny Shapiro was electric with his feet for the whole Game. Congrats on a great start!

2. Team Sammy (Ian’s Pizza) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

After a brief hiatus in 2014, Team Sammy is back for another crack at All Sports Series but this time with a younger/hungrier group.  This Sammy squad came out firing and pulled off a big Week 1 W against Team SigEp.  This crew is mostly full of All Sports Series Rookies.. They do have Sam Modro who is fresh off a Championship Game appearance in the College/Prep League (Highland Park, IL) this past Summer.. He knows how to navigate these waters and will undoubtedly help lead this crew during the Fall.  Most importantly, they presented a deep roster with tons of athleticism that has the promise to translate across multiple sports. Excited to see what this young group has in store for 2015! Welcome!

3. Team Fiji (Badger Bowl Purple) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

Back for their second run in All Sports Series, Team Fiji, started off the 2015 campaign with a dramatic come from behind, final-second W that could windup being the Game of the Year.  We had two “Game Winning” TDs in the closing minute of this one and it was Team Fiji who struck last and got the W.  This group never stopped thinking they’d win and that is a key element to any successful All Sports Series group.. Last year’s Captain Randall Pulfer has moved to the sideline while he recovers and is now in a Manager’s role for the time being.. He has many All Sports Series Leagues under his belt and will surely be able to guide this group in the coming weeks. Welcome Back!

4. Team SigEp (Badger Bowl Blue) – Currently tied for 4th with 0 points.

Team SigEp was taking part in their first All Sports Series action in Franchise history on Tuesday Night.  They came across a tough Team Sammy squad and while the Game could have gone either way, this time they came up just a bit short.

5. Team AEPi JR (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 5th with 0 points.

Every League always has that one Opening Game that is total coin-flip where both Teams play well but only one can come out on top.. Normally, the Team that wins will come up near the top of the Power Rankings, however, in many cases the Team to watch in the long-run is the squad that came out on the short end of it.. Team AEPi JR is entering their second season of All Sports Series and now that they have been through the rigors of one season are ready to really make a name for themselves in 2015.  They lost in Week 1 to Team Fiji in heartbreaking fashion, but truly played well enough to win.. While Team Fiji will enjoy the points in the Standings.. It’s a long-season and now AEPi JR has that little extra hunger in them to propel them to success this year. Watch out for them this year.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order) – Currently tied for 4th with 0 points.

Team (Badger Bowl Red)

Team AEPi SO (Badger Bowl Black)

Team KSig (Badger Bowl Green)

The Kappa Sig house has left a giant impression on the Madison Men’s League in the past couple of seasons and now it’s time for a new wave of KSigs to come in and take the torch.. In 2015 we have a mostly new roster of Sophomores and they are ready to go!  Captain Bart Bess has assembled a deep line-up anchored by All Sports Series Vet and QB Grant Paley.  They didn’t get the W in Week 1 but they have all the makings of a Championship Contender.. Plenty of time to rebound and get into the Rankings next week!

Madison Co-Ed Power Rankings

1. Team AXO & Co. (Badger Bowl Silver) – Currently in 1st with 20 points.

The Co-Ed League got off to a great start on Tuesday Night as we had a Game come down to the wire which saw Team AXO & Co. come out with the 1 point victory!  This crew, by Aly Verson and Courtney Rosenfield, came in during their first All Sports Series Game and wouldn’t be denied a W!  It was such an entertaining Game with both the #1 Team and their opponents #2 Team Castriano showing a ton of potential.. If this Game is any indication, we are in-store for a really fun ride in 2015 with the Co-Ed League. Congrats on the dub and Welcome!

2. Team Castriano (Club Tavern Red) – Currently tied for 2nd with 0 points.

Captain Ali Castriano knows full-well about taking the Crown in All Sports Series as it was a year ago that she was a part of the Championship squad – Team Fischer.. In 2015, she takes the “C” from former Captain Blair Fischer who graduated on to our Chicago Leagues.. It was just a year ago that Team Fischer took a couple of Ls in the first few weeks of the Season before getting hot at the right time and taking the Crown.  A Week 1 Loss, is just that.. Just one week. Their Game could have gone either way and they will certainly get another shot at Team AXO & Co. in the coming weeks!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order) – Currently tied for 2nd with 0 points.

Team (Club Tavern Navy)

Team Chi O & Co. (Club Tavern Orange)

That’s it for this Week! We’ll see you Tuesday Night for Hoops action!
