2015 Suburbs College/Prep – Week 1 (June 24)

Updated: June 26, 2015

The first, the original, the one that started it all.. The College/Prep League has officially entered it’s 6th Summer!  We got things started a week later than expected (Go Hawks!) but Week 1 was surely worth the wait.. We had some Teams put up some huge numbers and try to grab hold of a top spot in the Power Rankings.. For those who are checking out their first Power Rankings article.. Here’s what you can expect each and every week.. A Link to the Weekly Highlight Video.  As well, you can count on a wrap-up of the week that was and a glance at the week ahead. Just keep in mind most of the Rankings are done based on a statistical analysis, I (Holden) don’t see nearly enough of each Game for these Rankings to be anything more than that.. They also have no barring on the actual Standings.

Now that the intro is out of the way.. The College/Prep League powered by CEA Study Abroad has an excellent mix of All Sports Series vets and squads chalk-full of Rookies.. The 2x Defending Prep/League Champs have moved on to Chicago Men’s League which means it’s a wide open field in the Summer of 2015.. OK let’s Rank ‘Em!

College/Prep Power Rankings

1. Team Lutz (Poopie Palz) – Currently tied for 1st with 22 points.

Team Lutz had a great Rookie season a year ago when they were just finishing up at GBN as they entered the Playoffs as the #6 seed before being ousted in the 1st round by the #11 Seed. Now a year older and wiser they are ready to take the League by storm. Captain Ethan’s squad returns almost everyone from the 2014 squad and once again they are flying the Poopie Palz banner.. They had a great night one on the gridiron.. Their past success in combination with their Week 1 W was enough come in at #1 of a truly wide open field!

2. Team Zisook (Baker Boys) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Team Zisook is one of many Rookie squads in the College/Prep League this Summer and also one of many groups to have just graduated from HPHS. They looked right at home on Wednesday Night at the HP rec as they went for a League-high 120+ in Hoops.  It’s not quite the record, as we actually had a Team go for 129 in the Chicago Men’s League last week.. But it’s not far off.  More importantly, this was just their first All Sports Series Game.. Can honestly say this is the most impressive debut in the 6-year history of the College/Prep League. Hands down.  Captain Evan and co. filled it up early and often.. If you go to the Stats Page you are going to see Team Zisook all over the top of it.. Jacob Iden, Jason Beerman and Luke Norcia all were incredible from the field.. It’s a scary scene for the rest of the League. Well done guys!

3. Team Holway (Weil Foot & Ankle) – Currently tied for 1st with 22 points.

It seemed like not too long ago that Team Holway (formerly Team Watts) were the young guns from DHS just trying to compete with the big bad college Teams.. However, a few years have passed now and a couple of Playoff runs in and you may be looking at the actual favorite to take the Crown this Summer.  Most of the Watts/Holway group returns from past seasons and they’ve added a couple more stud-athletes as well.  They are a deep Team that truly can excel in any sport.. They’ve been gearing up for this run for years now and if Wednesday Night is any indication of what this Summer will bring to them.. Well, I wouldn’t bet against them!

4. Team Nelson (Spikeball) – Currently tied for 1st with 22 points.

Team Nelson (pictured above) grabbed the largest margin of victory in any of the Flag Football Games during Week 1.  Formerly Team Audley, these guys are ready to make a splash in their second All Sports Series season.  Many of them played Football at Lake Forest and it showed on Wednesday Night.  They made the endzone their second home.. These guys showed flashes a year ago of great things.. It often takes one season to just get your bearings with the All Sports Series format.. They seem to be on the path to the Crown right about now..

5. Team Lehrman (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Team Lehrman is entering their first run as a unit in the College/Prep League but they have many Players who have participated in past All Sports Series Leagues.  They have a tremendously deep squad that is going to give their opponents fits no matter the sport.  They are a group of veterans both in experience and age compared to many of the other College/Prep Teams and historically that proves to be very vital come Playoff Time.  Captain Ross knows how to navigate a Playoff run and many of these guys used to call Camp Ojibwa home so you know that they have the competitive fire to do whatever it takes!

6. Team Prizant (SportsLock) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

For those wondering how a Team who took a Week 1 L is in the Top6 this week, here’s your explanation.. Team Prizant is a combination of two formidable past Teams.. Team Valvassori and Team Rijos from the past several Summers.  Last year both of those Teams actually met in the Elite8 before Team Rijos from the #9 seed actually made it all the way to the Championship Game.  They’ve tinkered with the rosters a bit but what is left is a true super-team that has had Championship Game experience. Something that very few in the College/Prep League this Summer can boast.. They obviously didn’t get the Week 1 W they were searching for but losing to Team Holway in Football by one score is hardly something to get down about.. These guys entered the season as the favorites in Vegas and one week shouldn’t change that.

7. Team Fialkow (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Always want to keep an eye on the Teams that win close Games.  The blow-outs will happen.. Teams play up and down during the long-season but a real indicator of future Playoff success is who can be counted on in the clutch.. Team Fialkow has a few returning players from the past Team Merritt squads but also have a ton of Rookies.. They managed to pull out a 4pt Hoops W that came down to the wire with Team Levenfeld.  Team Fialkow is a hybrid GBN/GBS squad of graduating seniors..  There will be less familiarity with them than many of the other Teams in the League but don’t sleep on them for a minute.  They’ve already proven once they can come up big at the end of Games.. Come August that’s the Name of the Game.

8. Team Sutker (Once Upon a Bagel) – Currently tied for 4th with 15 points.

Team Sutker is another Rookie squad of graduating Seniors from HPHS.. 1 of 4 of those Teams actually.. They started the season off on the right foot in getting a Hoops W over rivals Team Herz.  Of all the Rookie Teams this Summer and there are many, these guys jump off the page a bit because many of them have older brothers who have been through the rigors of All Sports Series before. So potentially some wisdom will have been passed down.. Hey, anything to get an advantage right?  Good start to their first campaign.

9. Team Kollada (Sarkis Cafe) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

Another band of Rooks, this group is comprised of graduating Seniors from DHS, and they looked impressive in Night 1 albeit in a Loss. They took on some familiar (and older) faces in Team Lehrman in Hoops and just couldn’t get passed them in the second half. However, they showed promise and kept it close in their first All Sports Series contest.  These guys are only going to get better.  Captain Mike and John Phipps lead a strong core.. It will be interesting to see how they fare against all of the HP Teams coming their way soon..

10. Team Liss (Testing Timers) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

The oldest Team in the field has some expectations that come along with it. These guys have been around the block a couple times in the College/Prep League and it’s pretty much now or never.. That being said, this edition of Team Liss is a hybrid of Team Liss and Team Sanchez from a year ago.. It’ll take a bit of time for them to really come together as a unit.  Team Liss managed to win a Playoff Game for the first time last Summer and were seconds away from a stunning second one that left them just short of the Elite8.  They know how to get it done.. Just need some fine tuning. Expect them to head up the Rankings before too long.

11. Team Herz (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

Rookie squad. HP Graduating Seniors. We’ve said it before (2x) in the Rankings.. They are going to be really familiar with most of the Teams in the League which is rare for a Rookie group. That is a double-edged sword.. They are going to feel like they can beat just about anyone and at the same time other Teams will have similar feelings toward them.. They showed in their opening Game that they have a TON of talent.  Early in the season, while wins are important, you want to look at a Team’s depth. These guys have several players who can contribute and seemingly in other arenas as well.. Like the look of Team Herz for sure.

12. Team Levenfeld (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

You can read above in Team Herz’s section and really copy/paste most of it here to Team Levenfeld. They had the closest defeat of anyone in Week 1 and they showed that they will fight to the final seconds. Captain Eli along with Andrew Zoldan who had 31 points on Wednesday Night are as strong of a pair of leaders as there are in the League. That is an important thing to have come August.

13. Team Morrison (Bekins Lake County) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

Team Morrison is one of the only New Trier based Teams in the League and they too are a group of Rookies. They had a tough test with #1 Team Lutz in their first week but they showed promise and there is so, so much time to climb these Rankings. Most importantly they never got down.. Which is a big deal.. Each Team will face adversity this season.. Important to know how to deal with it. They can.

14. Team Levin (First Bank of Highland Park) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

Once upon a time Team Levin were the young pups entering the College/Prep League as the youngest Team in the League.. Now a few years later and after last year’s hiatus they are ready to make a run at the Crown. Wednesday didn’t go well.. They’ll be the first to tell you. They took on Team Nelson in their best sport.. Schedule makes a difference, remember that folks. These guys are going to be just fine.  They just need a week or two to get back in the All Sports Series swing of things. Welcome back gents.

15. Team Gordon (Gordon Bros.) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

Full Disclosure — Captain Eric (Igor) Gordon is my first cousin (by blood). As you can see, no favoritism has been shown.. Now that we can get past that, allow me to welcome back the longest tenured Team in the College/Prep League.. They are entering their 5th Summer believe it or not.. It was in 2011 that they were the youngest Team in the League and now in 2015 they find themselves on the older side of things with a cast of hungry youngsters trying to get past them..  Last season they got into the Playoffs for the first time and this year the Goal is clearly to secure the first Playoff W in Franchise history. They have what it takes.. Clearly they took on a tough Team Zisook squad in Hoops on Wednesday. I think it’s safe to say that Team Zisook is going to give everyone fits in Hoops so no reason to be worried about Week 1.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team (BBQ Pit), Team (Salon ALX), Team (Tamales), Team (VIP Express Limo), Team (Sushi Kushi Too) — Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

All Teams to have double headers later in the season.

That’s it for the first Power Rankings of the Season. Have a great weekend and see you next Wednesday!
