2016-17 Chicago Hoops – Week 11 (Jan. 22)

By
Updated: January 24, 2017

Over the course of a 24-Week Season there are always a few weeks that stand-out for just being wild.. This past Sunday was certainly one of those days and for numerous reasons.. Let’s focus though on the one that really matters.. 6 Teams in last week’s Top-9 spots of the Rankings fell this past Sunday.  That allows for some big-time shake ups in the Rankings.  We are just about at the 60% mark of the Regular Season.. Eight weeks still remain and now is the time to kick it into high-gear and secure those top Playoff spots!

Power Rankings

1. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 10-1

Last Week, Team Wong ascended to the top spot in the Rankings.. This week, they cemented their spot there for the foreseeable future.  They went toe to toe with Team Maione.. The group who has finished with the #1 seed in each of the last two seasons.. Oh and they did so without All Star Tim Szatko who dominates the paint.. They got a 1pt W and showed they are not only the real deal.. but the Crown may just run through them this Season. Lane Barlow led with 34 points in the Win. They get Team Deutsch in Week 12.

2. Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 9-2

They are at their highest spot in the Rankings in Years and for good reason!  Both they and Team Jones entered Sunday on 6-Game Winning Streaks and they snapped Team Jones’ streak and by a great margin in Week 11. They won by 22 points behind 32 points from Josh Davis and 18 points from both Randall Hampton and Mitch Bouie. The three of them were so impressive in this one. They put their 7-Game W-streak on the line against Team Apuli in Week 12.

3. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 9-2

A week after falling to Team Malvin, they rebounded nicely (as they always do) and secured a Win over Rivals Team Cohen. Scott Campbell was on another level on Sunday Night. He scored 39 to lead the League. Dennis McKinney had 27 and Brandon Lathon had 18 points, finishing just shy of a Triple Double. They take on Defending Champs Team Gutman in a Game they have likely had pegged for some-time.. It’s a match-up of the only two Teams to have ever worn the Crown for the Chicago Hoops League. It’s the first time we have ever had past Champions meet in this League.. Game of the Week. Check.

4. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 8-3

They have been in 3 extremely tight Games to being 2017 and they have come out on the short-end of two of them.. They have two Losses in 3 Weeks by a combined 2 points.. Doesn’t get much harder than that.. They now know first-hand Team Wong is the real deal and that will make the impending Rematch that much more fun come Playoff time. Chris Wroblewski had 36 points and was fantastic as usual. They will be just fine.. They are in a hard section of their schedule but they always seem to come out of everything alright.. They do trail Team Wong by essentially 3 Games with 8 left to play (2 Back in the Loss Column + L in Head to Head Tiebreaker).. We may see a new Team start the Playoffs seeded #1 this season.. They take on Team Silver next Sunday.

5. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 8-3

They have been excellent recently and it made for a very interesting matchup with last year’s Runners-Up Team Zimmerman who have had an up and down campaign so far this year.. They ended up falling by a point to Team Zimmerman but remain at #5 as many of the Teams surrounding them in the Rankings fell as well. Victor Ojeleye had another big night with 29 and Captain Doug had 15 in this one.. They need to just move on from last week and continue to play their form of Basketball.. They get the reeling Team Sternberg, losers of 3 straight, in Week 12.

6. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 8-3

Team Malvin has had some incredible Wins this Season.. Including a huge W over 2x Champs Team Lalez in Week 10.. That being said, there are a couple of Games they wish they could have back.. This past Sunday was one of those when they fell to Team Apuli — who is much better in the past month — but a group they likely expected to defeat. Matt Merrigan had 38 points and Brandon Snowden had 24 to help a depleted roster on Sunday. It just wasn’t enough as they couldn’t find stops on the Defensive end. They look to rebound against the tough #8 Team Jones on Sunday.

7.  Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 7-4

This was a group that was in the Top-5 early in the season before suffering through a rough-patch. The past two weeks they have gotten back to their original Game and have gutted out big Wins over extremely quality opponents including this past Sunday against the Defending Champs Team Gutman. Romeo Magloire and newcomer Donte Logan combined for 60 points to help lead their Team to the Winner’s Circle. They look to make it 3 in a row against Team Harris in Week 12.

8. Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 7-4

They brought a 6-Game W-Streak into Sunday’s Game against Team Kozin, who also happened to be Winners of six straight.. Something had to give.. Well, unfortunately for Team Jones, Team Kozin had no plans of stopping their streak.. Team Jones was without a couple key contributors and it really hurt them on the Defensive end where they gave up 95 points. Team Kozin has gone to back to back Championship Nights for a reason and showed exactly why in Week 11.  Captain Gilles Jones went for 33 in this one. They look to start up a new streak against the very strong #6 Team Malvin in one of the Games of the Week!

9. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 7-4

Team Purimetla got another impressive Win on Sunday Night as they were able to take down Team Sternberg.. The Win pulled them even with quite a few Teams for a tie in 7th and they are now just a Game Back of the Teams tied for 4th in the Standings. We’ll break down the Playoff races later but both of those tiers come with extra BYES early in the Playoffs. If they play well they can be in a really great spot. Sam Leewood had 29 and Captain Pete had 27 to help grab the W. They get the suddenly ascending #10 Team Zimmerman, a group that was in the Championship Game a year ago.

10. Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 5-6

Don’t look now but this group has won two in a row and they are doing it on the performances of different contributors. They are getting full-team efforts here and it seems, as we stated last week, that they have turned the corner.. That is BAD news for everyone else.. These guys have been among the most successful franchises in All Sports Series history and they have enough talent to take the whole thing.. They just needed to play better together and that appears to be taking place with plenty of time for a stellar run in April.  Riaz Hoveydai had 22 and Esto Vega also went for 20 in the Win. They look to continue their rise with #9 Team Purimetla which could be the most exciting Game on Sunday Night.

11. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 7-4

Team Sternberg has had better months. Like all of the other months in their history.. It happens to the best though.. They are in a rut.. Their Captain moved for work. They have been short-handed and the roster that we saw jump out to a 7-1 record in 2016 is just not the same right now.. As a result they have lost 3 in a row.. Max Shulruff has been a bright spot.. He scored 36 points on Sunday Night. They look to get back on track against #5 Team UC Booth, and try to salvage January.

12. Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 5-6

The Defending Champs have been in “one step forward, one step back mode” for a handful of weeks now.. They were able to pull to .500 mark last week but fell this week to #7 Team McNichols and a result they are now below .500 once again. Marin Kukoc went for 30 in this one but they couldn’t get enough from the rest of the squad to take the Win. They are going to take on #3 Team Lalez.. Aka 2x Champs Team Lalez. It will be the first battle of past Champions we have ever had in this League.. They are the only two groups to have ever held the Crown.. Can you say Game of the Week presented by Dr. Jacob D.D.S.?

13. Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 4-7

Back in the Winner’s Circle this week was Team Schwartz who come in at #13. Austin Brown led the charge with 28 points in the Win over Team Silver. Jason Vismantas had 21 and Jonathan Blakely had 16 as well. We keep hammering this home but they are better than the 4-7 record shows. They are going to be very dangerous come Playoff time. They look to get another one in the Win Column against Team Kaplan in Week 12.

14. Team James (Chipotle) – 3-8

Team James got another Win on Sunday Night. They were 0-6 but now have won 3 of their last 5. Scott Sangster had 26 points and Marquis Smith had 18 points in the Win. It was a very strong Win over Team Harris. They look to make it 4 Wins in 6 Games and win back to back Games for the first time this season against Team Cohen in Week 12.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 2-9

Big-time, big-time Win over #6 Team Malvin on Sunday Night for Team Apuli. We have talked about how they have had an influx of talent in the past few weeks and now as they come together they are showing the rest of the League what they can do. This is a group capable of really turning it around in the last 8 weeks of the season. Their final record at the end of the Regular Season may not be pretty but this is a group playing solid ball. They have a very tough test in Week 12 with #2 Team Kozin and their 7-Game Win Streak.

Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 3-8

They played #3 Team Lalez tough on Sunday Night but couldn’t come away with the Win. Jake Lerman exploded for 37 and Justin Bowen went for 28.. They scored just fine throughout the Game but struggled to get stops against the strong and balanced core of Team Lalez. They battle Team James on Sunday Night — a group they are tied with in the Standings and it’s one that they definitely need to get.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 2-9

They have snapped their skid and now can take a gigantic sigh of relief. They hadn’t won since Week 1 but that all changed on Sunday Night. Jack Gurvey returned for the first time in 2017 and scored 29 points to help secure the Win for Team Deutsch against Team Kaplan.  They are going to have a really tough test in Week 12.. #1 Team Wong is coming up next…

Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 3-8

Team Harris struggled this past Sunday as they were without a majority of their regular line-up.. It has been a common issue for them as they can’t seem to get in a rhythm with all of the moving parts. Eric Handrich had 21 and Captain Brian had 15 in the Win. They get #7 Team McNichols in Week 12.

Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-9

This was a rough one.. They have been playing many of the League’s best Teams and tough over the past few weeks but this one just got away from them against Team Deutsch. They were without several of their rotation players and it showed.. Darren Angell returned after a long-hiatus to lead them in scoring with 18 and Bret Darcy had 17 to contribute as well. They take on the tough Team Schwartz in Week 12.

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 1-10

Team Silver was coming off their first Win of the Season and came so close to getting their second on Sunday Night. They have been a completely different squad in 2017 and it’s great to see them competing hard.. This group is currently at the bottom of the Standings but if you wiped away the records, they would be at least in the middle of the pack with their level of play.. Gage Coleman had 32 and Nick Roberson added 15. They get the tough and angry #4 Team Maione on Sunday Night.

That’s it for this week. Good Luck to everyone in Week 12!
