2016-17 Chicago Hoops – Week 12 (Jan. 29)

By
Updated: February 6, 2017

A week after we saw many of the League’s best Teams fall, we saw them all rebound very nicely in Week 12.  Each Team Ranked in last week’s Top-6 all held serve and Won in Week 12, meaning there is little shake-up at the top.. Worth mentioning that Team Maione’s Chris Wroblewski went for FORTY-NINE points on Sunday to help secure the Win for his crew.. Where there was some movement is in the back half of the Rankings.. Team Zimmerman all of a sudden has the third-longest active Win-Streak in the League and last season’s Runners-Up seem to have found “it.” Well, they moved up from #10 to #7 this week.. Exiting the Rankings, however is the Team that played Team Zimmerman in the Championship a season ago.. That’s right.. After another L, Defending Champs Team Gutman have fallen out of the Rankings.. That just might be the motivation they need to turn it into high gear.

Power Rankings

1. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 11-1

They got one of the biggest Wins of the Season (based on margin of victory) on Sunday Night as they took down Team Deutsch. Tim Szatko returned from a one-week hiatus to lead them with 26 points and Terdarin Bryson had 21 in this one. These guys have won 10 in a row and are showing absolutely no signs of slowing down.. After the Super Bowl, they will take on #13 Team James who are winners of 3 of 4 and 4 of their last 6.. Should be a great Game in Week 13.

2. Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 10-2

Team Kozin just continues to roll right along. They defeated an improving Team Apuli crew on Sunday by 20 without past All Star guard Randall Hampton. They are just playing great basketball right now and they look primed for another run at the Crown in April. Mitch Bouie had 32, Michael Halusek had 22 and Josh Davis had 21 to front the scoring burden. When we return after the Super Bowl they will take on the reeling Team Sternberg.

3. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 10-2

Team Lalez have now won a couple Games in a row since their battle with Team Malvin and have looked very strong in the process. Remember they are doing all of this without the injured past All Star David Gershenzon. They had 5 players in double figures on Sunday Night.. Brandon Lathon is becoming a triple-double candidate each week.. Scott Campbell went for 30+ again and Dennis McKinney had 20. They are just so well rounded. We are in for a treat when they take on #5 Team UC Booth when we get back after the Super Bowl. That will be the Live Clean Chicago Game of the Week!

4. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 9-3

We mentioned it at the top but it is worth repeating.. Chris Wroblewski poured in 49 points in Week 12. He took the burden on his shoulders and made sure that his Team wouldn’t drop a second straight Game. Andy Timson also had a Double Double that included 17 rebounds. The Game was closer than some may have predicted but Team Silver is better than advertised. Team Maione gets #10 Team Purimetla in what should be a fun one on Feb. 12.

5. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 9-3

They went back and forth with a Team Sternberg crew that at one point was 7-1.. Team UC Booth came away with the Win in what was a nice bounce back after their disappointing 1 point Loss to #7 Team Zimmerman in Week 11. Victor Ojeleye scored 37 points to help ensure his Team would return to the Winner’s circle. It is going to be very exciting to see him and some of the other phenomenal scorers go toe to toe come Playoff time. They will take on #3 Team Lalez after we return from the Super Bowl Break in the Live Clean Chicago Game of the Week!

6. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 9-3

Like much of the Top-6 (these 6 have separated themselves at this point), they had a nice bounce back week on Sunday. They had a disappointing Loss to Team Apuli in Week 11 and were eager to get back on the court and win. No surprise that Nate Johnson was in attendance here as his personal win% is one of the best in the League. When he is in the building Team Malvin is just on another level. He had 22 points on Sunday. Brandon Snowden had 18 in this one.  They take on the streaking #7 Team Zimmerman in what will be a co-Main Event of the evening.

7.  Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 6-6

They have Won 3 in a row and against quality opponents.. They gained a Game on 4 Teams in the Standings on Sunday.. Now they are just a Game back of all 4 who sit tied for 7th. They also have defeated a couple of them and all of a sudden Team Zimmerman is one of the hottest Teams in the League and with plenty of time to keep climbing up the Standings.  They had 6 guys in double figures to offer a very well balanced attack in the Win against Team Purimetla. Esto Vega was the leading scorer with 19. Dave Altman had 18 as well. They have a chance when we return from the Super Bowl to make a real impact on everything when they take on #6 Team Malvin in a huge Game.

8. Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 7-5

They dropped a close one to Team Harris on Sunday Night. It’s one they likely assumed they could and should get.. They were missing a few key contributors in this one including Joe Kozak, their leading scorer. Lorenzo Fiol led with 14 in this one. They look to shake it off when they take on the struggling Team Kaplan on Sunday Feb. 12.

9. Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 7-5

There are certain guys who are just tough. Captain Gilles Jones dislocated his pinky on Sunday Night, popped it back in, and kept playing.. Unfortunately, his squad didn’t have enough to surpass #6 Team Malvin on Sunday Night but this has to be a galvanizing moment for this club. He led with 23 points and Garrett Staniec was a board shy of a double double. They get Team Silver in Week 13 where they look to get back to their Winning ways.

10. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 7-5

Team Purimetla fell by two points to the streaking Team Zimmerman on Sunday Night. It makes the middle of the pack in the Standings very interesting right now. They have been sea-sawing in recent weeks, winning one and losing the next, they are a quality Team.. Just need to bring their best each week.. Their best is among the League’s best.. Kevin Matos had 22, Captain Pete Purimetla had 20, Lucas Kisielewski had 19 and Josh Blackwell had 17. They just couldn’t get stops late. They have a huge upcoming Game with #4 Team Maione in Week 13.

11. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 7-5

They came close to stopping the bleeding on Sunday Night as they battled for the full Game with #5 Team UC Booth but they just came up a bit short. Jamie Nikitas returned to lead them in scoring with 29 and it showed just how much they missed him. Jonathan Gac had 20 and Max Shulruff had 18. These guys are missing their Captain Sam Sternberg, whether they want to admit it or not, his leadership late in Games helped guide them to many Wins.. Maybe he’ll make it back for a couple weeks of the playoffs.. They get #2 Team Kozin, winners of 9 straight, when we return post-Super Bowl.

12. Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 5-7

Team Schwartz have now won 2 straight and 3 of 5. The Games that they were Losing early in the season.. close Games.. They are now finding ways to come out on top of.. This is an extremely talented group and their depth is very underrated. When they have their full compliment of Players at their disposal, they can play with any group in the League. Jermaine Johnson led with 27, Austin Brown had 20 and Jason Vismantas had 18. They get Team Harris right after the Super Bowl.

13. Team James (Chipotle) – 4-8

Team James got a huge W on Sunday Night. They battled Team Cohen into Overtime and came away with the 1 point Win. They have now won 3 of their last 4 Games and 4 of their last 6, since starting 0-6.  They are rounding into form and at the perfect time. Captain Christian James had 33 and Jalal Hamad had 22. After the Super Bowl break, they will get a crack at the #1 squad in the land Team Wong and their 10-Game win streak.

14. Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 4-8

Team Harris has had a pretty straight-forward recipe for Winning this season.. Get their whole Team to gym (mostly Zack Novak) and it usually results in Ws.  He led with 27 points this past Sunday Night as they got a nice W over the very solid Team McNichols. After the brief hiatus for the Super Bowl they will take on #12 Team Schwartz which has potential to steal the show in Week 13 if everyone is present for both sides.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 2-10

Team Apuli ran into one of the League’s very best on Sunday Night in Team Kozin.. It happens. The key is they are gaining chemistry and are a going to be a force to be reckoned with come Playoff time. Robert Kamentsev led with 25 and we saw the 2016-17 debut of big Dan Stone.  He had 23 points. If he can become a part of this rotation along with the host of other size that they have, their front-line could become the most feared in the League.  Defending Champs Team Gutman are next.

Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 3-9

They dropped a tough one to Team James in Overtime on Sunday Night. Certainly a tough pill to swallow as they were right there. Jake Lerman led with 20 points. Jake Shlofrock had 18 and 3 others were in double digits. They just needed to find an extra stop or two late and couldn’t. They will fire it back up against Team Deutsch when we get back after the Super Bowl.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 2-10

A week after getting a W they had to meet up with #1 Team Wong. Unfortunate scheduling there but they can now look ahead to a Game with Team Cohen who is just a Game above them in the Standings.. A win in Week 13 would really help them leapfrog a Team in terms of Playoff seeding. Jack Gurvey had 18 to once again lead them in scoring. He is a huge addition for them.

Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 5-7

Is Team Gutman a Top-14 Team? Certainly.  They are much higher than that in reality.. They are the Defending Champs for a reason.. However, right now they just aren’t playing their best.. Well, Andy Marks is.. He had 34 on Sunday. Last spring they rode a wave of amazing defense to the Crown. They are extremely long and when they work hard on Defense it really is tough to score on them.. This Sunday they gave up almost 90 points though.. They may be coasting just a bit and it’s time to flip the switch. They get Team Apuli when we return after the Super Bowl. A Game they need to get.

Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-10

Team Kaplan fell in a close one against Team Schwartz on Sunday Night. This Team is talented enough to win Games they just haven’t.. They haven’t really had their full roster in some time and that is holding them back.. Axel Playner did have 25 on the night and Tred Dean had 18. They look to snap the skid post-Super Bowl against Team McNichols when we return on Feb. 12.

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 1-11

They played very well against one of the League’s best in Team Maione. They were right there with them for a long stretch in this Game.. They couldn’t over take them to earn the Win but they showed a lot in defeat. Captain EJ Silver and Gage Coleman led with 18 points a piece and Patrick Thompson had 16. They also welcomed back Pat Fitzgerald who has been out with an injury. They look to get another Win against Team Jones in Week 13.

That’s it for this week. Enjoy the Super Bowl and see everyone back on Sunday Feb. 12!
