2016-17 Chicago Hoops – Week 13 (Feb. 12)

By
Updated: February 16, 2017

It was another one of those wild Sundays for the Chicago Hoops League.. We saw 4 of last week’s Top-6 Ranked Teams lose in the unlucky Week 13.. That group included former #1 Team Wong who lost in the final seconds to Team James in what was a very entertaining Game.. Leaping up to #1 and now holders of the longest active win streak in the League is Team Kozin!  Also, we need to give a shout-out to Joe Kozak of Team McNichols who posted a FIFTY burger on Sunday Night as he just couldn’t miss. Just incredible!

Power Rankings

1. Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 11-2

As we mentioned at the top, there is a new #1 Team in the Chicago Hoops League and that would be Team Kozin. Somehow, someway this Team always finds a way to win.. Somehow, someway they also are still not getting their just due from others around the League. They have won 9 straight.. What else do they need to do? Josh Davis had 34 and Mitch Bouie had 23 to help lead them to their victory over Team Sternberg on Sunday Night. They look to make it 10 in a row when they take on the feisty Team Schwartz.

2. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 11-2

Hopping up a spot this week is Team Lalez.. They along with Team Kozin were the only Teams in the Top-5 to Win this past Sunday. They took down Team UC Booth in what was a really well played Game.. Especially when you consider that both Teams were without several key contributors. At the the end of the day.. They did what they do.. Win Basketball Games. Scott Campbell was his usual self with 31 points to lead them in scoring. They now look ahead to a big-time match-up with the former #1 squad — #3 Team Wong in what is absolutely the Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Game of the Week!

3. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 11-2

For the first time in Week 2 we have to recap a Team Wong defeat.. It has been quite a long time for them since that Loss in October.. They had won 10 straight Games leading up to this past Sunday.. Lane Barlow had 31 in this one.  They were without several of their rotation guys including Captain Jon and Tim Szatko. This is not an excuse-based Team though.. They will turn around and look to bounce right back against one of the best Teams in the League — current #2 and two-time Champs Team Lalez.

4. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 9-4

Chris Wroblewski led the way for Team Maione with 39 points on Sunday Night. In any ordinary week that would surely lead the league in scoring.. He got a big chunk of those points in the final moments of the Game as Team Maione tried to mount a comeback against the sharp-shooting Team Purimetla squad.. They eventually ran out of time and for the 3rd time in 2017 we saw them go down.. These guys are going to be just fine however.. Plenty of time to get rolling before the Playoffs and that can all start with a big-time Game against #7 Team Malvin in Week 14.

5. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 9-4

Team UC Booth battled with 2x Champs Team Lalez and came up just a bit short.. Nothing to be ashamed of there and they were certainly short-handed without leading scorer Victor Ojeleye.  As you can tell with their Top-5 Ranking.. Nothing to worry about here. Michael Mahoney went for 20 and Captain Doug Sexauer went for 18 on Sunday Night. They look to bounce back in Week 14 against Team Deutsch.

6. Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 7-6

Don’t look now but Team Zimmerman has won 4 in a row and all of a sudden are the second hottest Team in the League.  They are over .500 for the first time since Week 3. They are also shining in close Games.. They have won their last 3 Games by a combined 4 points. Riaz Hoveydai led the way this past Sunday with 26 points. Esto Vega also had 21 in the big time win over #7 Team Malvin. These guys are really gelling as they figure out their new rotations. They aim for 5 in a row against Rivals Team Cohen.

7. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 9-4

Team Malvin suffered a close L to Team Zimmerman on Sunday Night. The upper-middle tier is getting a lot closer in the past couple of weeks.. There are now 6 Teams within a Game of each other at either 9-4 or 8-5 with Team Zimmerman surging up the Standings at 7-6 (and they hold some tiebreakers).. Some Team in that pack is going to finish as high as #4 in seeding (at least) while one of those Teams are going to start at #11 (or worse).. That is gigantic difference and the next few weeks will decide a lot. Team Malvin may be the best of all of those Teams but they need to get hot, right now.. Nate Johnson had 30 and Rodney Clark had 23 in Week 13. They look to bounce back against another one of those 9-4 clubs – #4 Team Maione.

8. Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 8-5

Team McNichols went OFF on Sunday Night. Not only did Joe Kozak score FIFTY but Captain Chris McNichols had one of his better showings of the season with 23 points against Team Kaplan.  They kept pace with Team Jones and Team Purimetla who they are tied with in the Standings at 8-5.. They get Team Silver up next.

9. Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 8-5

They got a nice 20 point Win on Sunday Night over Team Silver to maintain in the Top-10. Mike Gleason had 19 points while Ron Nandi and Thomas Tredennick each had 17 as well. They were nearly impossible to stop as a Team on Sunday Night as they snapped a small losing skid. Next up they get the sneaky good Team Harris who has been much better in 2017.

10. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 8-5

Rounding out the Top-10 is Team Purimetla. If any group has a gripe this week with their Ranking it is them.. They defeated #4 Team Maione on Sunday Night and held serve.. The issue is, everyone in the immediate vicinity also won and they didn’t have a chance of leap-frogging anyone even if they deserved to move up in the Rankings. Kevin Matos had 22 to lead them in scoring and Eugene Connor (formerly of Team Zimmerman) made his 2016-17 debut and went for 21. They get the streaking Team James in Week 14.

11. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 7-6

Something has to give for them.. They have dropped 5 straight. In reality, it is more about their rotation.. Well, the lack of rotation, in recent weeks that has caused this once top-flight squad to fall down the Rankings.. Tyler Max suited up for the first time in 2017 and had 37 points to help try and carry the load but there was just too big a hill to climb against #1 Team Kozin. Max Shulruff also had 23 in this one. They look to get back to their winning ways in Week 14 against the Defending Champs Team Gutman.

12. Team James (Chipotle) – 5-8

Team James has won three straight and none more impressive than the Win they got in Week 13. They were down very early on Sunday Night. By double digits. They trailed by as much as 15 in the first half.. Oh and they were against former #1 Team Wong (now #3 Team Wong).. They kept fighting though and were able to seal the deal late in the Game from the Free Throw line as Scott Sangster had 2 of his 17 points. Captain Christian James led them in scoring with 19 and Jalal Hamad had 18.  They get #10 Team Purimetla on Sunday Night in a match-up between two Teams that are playing very well right about now.

13. Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 5-8

They entered a shoot-out with Team Schwartz on Sunday Night and thanks to Zack Novak getting hot down the stretch they came out on the right side of it. At one point Novak hit 3s on 4 consecutive possessions. Tyler Geocaris actually led the Team in scoring with 24 points and hit a crucial shot late as Team Schwartz was mounting a comeback. They get the streaking #12 Team James in Week 14.

14. Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 5-8

Team Schwartz went toe to toe with Team Harris on Sunday Night and just came up a couple makes short. It was a really well-played Game from both sides as both squads were making big time shots down the stretch. Jason Vismantas had 26 points and Austin Br0wn went for 23 on the night. This is a Team that is capable of knocking off several top teams come Playoff time. If they can get a hot a little bit down the stretch and improve their seed just a touch this is a crew good enough to win the entire thing. Of course to win the whole thing, they will have to go through the top Teams in the League.. They get a taste of that with #1 Team Kozin in Week 14.

Rest of the Pack ( Alphabetical Order )

Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 3-10

Big time W for Team Apuli who gutted one out against Defending Champs Team Gutman on Sunday Night. The Teams traded big time plays and when all was said and done these guys wound up on top. Robert Kamentsev led them in scoring with 21 points. They are winners of 2 of their last 3 and look to keep the momentum going against Team Kaplan in Week 14, a group that sits just a Game back of the in the Standings.

Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 4-9

Team Cohen needed this one.. They got it. They had been in a slump and needed one Game to just see everything go their way to get back on track.. That was Week 13 for them as they took down Team Deutsch. Jake Lerman led with 28. Matt Maloney had 18 while Kyle Daniels and Jake Shlofrock each had 18. That’s 4 scorers at 18+.. That is a nice night. They look to make it two Wins in a row against old friends #6 Team Zimmerman.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 2-11

Team Deutsch would like to have Sunday Night back. They didn’t play their best against a Team that they match-up well with. No sense in dwelling on that..  Justin Deutsch had 21 in his best Offensive Game of the Season while Ross Chuckerman scored 15 in this one. They look to get back to the Winner’s circle against #5 UC Booth next week.

Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 5-8

Defending Champs – Team Gutman. That mantra “Defending Champs” gives them a lot of wiggle room in the Regular Season. They have been there and they have done that. They along with Team Lalez are the only Teams to have ever reached the mountain top of this League.. It’s flip switching time though.. They started off slowly last season as well before getting hot prior to the Playoffs. They have 6 games left to get right and climb up the Standings before the second season begins. Marin Kukoc had 20 points on Sunday to lead them in scoring. They get the reeling Team Sternberg next Sunday.. Good opportunity to turn it around.

Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-11

Not their best showing. They also played with just 5 guys again and were missing a few key components of their roster. Team McNichols also shot the ball incredibly well. Tredrick Dean had 24 and Darren Angell had 16 in this one. They look to shake it off and snap this skid next Sunday Night. They will take on Team Apuli who they trail by just 1 Game in the Standings. This is a key Game when it comes to tiebreakers for playoff seeding..

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 1-12

Team Silver was without leading scorer Gage Coleman on Sunday Night and they struggled as a result. Not only without his Offense but he is their biggest player and his absence left a lot of room in the lane for Team Jones’ big men to roam. David Holmes led them with 18 points while Pat Thompson and EJ Silver each had 15 as well. They will take on #8 Team McNichols on Sunday Night.

That’s it for Week 13. See everyone on Sunday Night!
