Updated: February 23, 2017

Week 14 is in the books and now we are officially in the home stretch! 5 Weeks of Regular Season Games separates us from the second season and it is going to be a sprint for the Top Seeds in the Playoffs.. We haven’t really gone over the Playoff Format just yet.. For those who have played in the past.. The Double Elimination bracket is back. It will replicate what we had last season.. That means there will be races for the Top-4 seeds who get an early round BYE.. The next race will be for the #7 seed, and then for the #14 seed.. The Bottom-6 seeds (Seeds 15-20) play in the Opening Round. More to come.. Here’s a Link to the Bracket!

Also want to give a big Thanks to Patrick Wilson of Southview Athletics for coming out to the League on Sunday Night! Those cool socks at the scorer’s tables are from Southview. Definitely check them out!

Power Rankings

1. Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 12-2

Their Win-streak now reaches 10 Games, tied for the longest of the Season with Team Wong’s streak from Week 3-12.  They got their latest Win in a 5 on 5 slugfest with Team Schwartz that was competitive until the very last second. Both Randall Hampton and Oren Amzaleg had 23 points and accounted for a majority of the Kozin buckets throughout the Game. Week 15 brings forth a familiar foe as they will clash with #3 Team Maione in what will certainly be the Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Game of the Week!

2. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 12-2

Holding serve at #2 this week is Team Lalez. They took part in Week 14’s biggest match-up and came away victorious in a Playoff-like atmosphere against Team Wong. They welcomed back Dave Gershenzon who has been out for a while with various injuries. He had 14 points in his return. Scott Campbell had 16 points to lead the way. They did a good job of preventing the explosive Team Wong offense from getting easy buckets. Team Wong was without 2 of their 3 leading scorers however and it will be fun to see these Teams go at it when they are both 100% come Playoff time. Team Lalez takes on Team Harris in Week 15.

3. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 10-4

Getting back into the Top-3 after a few weeks on the outside is Team Maione. They got a big Win over Team Malvin on Sunday Night and with just 5 guys in the rotation. Andy Timson went for 20 and Chris Wroblewski went for 19.  They also saw the debut of Matt Vogrich who had a team-high 21 points in his All Sports Series. They were fueled with a little bit more energy this week as Southview Athletics was in attendance to cheer on their squad. They move on to the Game of the Week with #1 Team Kozin this coming Sunday Night!

4.

4. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 11-3

Team Wong battled with Team Lalez on Sunday Night but just couldn’t overtake the 2x Champs. Tim Szatko went for 35 but they sorely missed the outside presence of Lane Barlow and the overall play of Terdarin Bryson.  They kept it close and were in it until the very end, just didn’t get the W.. We’ve seen this sort of thing happen before.. Long W-streak, then it finally gets snapped and it just takes a few weeks to get that true edge back. They move on to the feisty Team Schwartz in Week 15.

5. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 10-4

UC Booth was without many of their regular rotation players on Sunday as they were traveling for a B-school competition (hope it went well!) but that didn’t stop them from picking up another Win and holding on to the final spot in the Top-5 this week. Benjamin Hanessian had 26 points on just 12 shots and Michael Moorstein had 20 in this one.  They get the streaking Team Apuli in Week 15!

6. Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 8-6

Winners of 5 in a row now and it seems like a LONG time ago that this group was sitting 3 Games below .500 following Week 9 (and they had lost 4 in a row).  Just for kicks, let’s look back on a portion of their section from Week 9..

This Team’s record is not going to affect their post-season success. It just isn’t. They are 2x Defending Champs of the Chicago Men’s “All Sports” League and they were in the Championship Game of this League a year ago for great reason.. They need to take time over the next 10 weeks to just heal up, get right, and get ready for an extended run.  They know no other way. The turn around starts with Team Harris who they are currently tied with in the Standings.

Well, they still aren’t totally healthy as Captain Jack is roaming the sidelines still but they have figured out a lot and are looking like a threat once again for the Crown. Esto Vega had 25, Riaz Hoveydai had 23 and Matt Toth had 20 in the Win over Team Cohen.  They look to make it 6 in a row in a Rematch of last year’s Championship Game against Defending Champs Team Gutman.

7. Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 9-5

Team McNichols got another Win on Sunday Night and this time it was against Team Silver. They led by as much as 19 in the second half before Team Silver mounted a big time comeback and cut the lead to a 1-possession Game down the stretch. Team McNichols would hit their Free Throws though and sealed the deal, even with out last week’s 50-point man Joe Kozak. Captain Chris McNichols played lights-out again going for 36 points while Lo Fiol and Marlowe Soriano scored 19 each.  They take on Team Cohen in Week 15.

8. Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 9-5

Captain Gilles Jones has had some big time performances this Season.. None more impressive than this 41 point effort on Sunday Night to help guide his Team to the Win over Team Harris. At 9-5 they are tied in 6th with Team McNichols and Team Malvin, just a Game back of a couple Teams tied for 4th.. They are within striking distance of the Top-4 line but also can fall out of the Top-7 all together. Something to monitor down the stretch.. They get #11 Team Purimetla in a big time Week 15 matchup.

9. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 9-5

Team Malvin battled Team Maione on Sunday Night and dropped what was a competitive Game.  They didn’t play their best as open shots we’ve seen them routinely make, just weren’t staying down. To make matters worse, Captain Malvin left midway through this Game with an elbow to the temple and had to get stitched up. Feel better! Matt Merrigan scored 20 on the night and Nate Johnson had 19.  These guys look to snap their mini-skid next week against the streaking Team James.

10. Team James (Chipotle) – 6-8

This Team started off 0-6. They were 2-8 after 10 Weeks.  They have battled all the way back to 6-8 now, Winners of 4 in a row and 6 of their last 8 Games. This is going to be one of those Groups that comes in with a relatively low seed but playing at a high-level and is going to give someone an early Loss in the Playoffs. Book it. Captain Christian and Corey Lewis both had 15 in this Game to help lead them to the Win over #10 Team Purimetla. They Get #9 Team Malvin next week.

11. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 8-6

Team Purimetla fell to Team James this Week, just a Game after knocking off #3 Team Maione. It’s a perfect example of needing to bring it week in and week out in the Chicago Hoops League. There is so much talent spread out through the League and you can’t take a week off. Captain Pete Purimetla had 21 and Josh Blackwell had 17 in the Loss. They #8 Team Jones in an important Game in the Standings.

12. Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 6-8

Defending Champs Team Gutman got a much needed Win on Sunday Night over Team Sternberg. They came from behind and really locked down on D late to get the Win. Andy Marks went nuts for 34 points in this one to help earn the W. These guys have the ability to turn it on at the Defensive end. They are still unique in the sense they can put 5 guys on the floor all bigger than 6’4″ and just suffocate opposing Offenses. That was the key to their title run a year ago.. We saw flashes of that on Sunday and they will need to bring it from the opening tip this coming week if they want to defeat the streaking #6 Team Zimmerman in a 2015-16 Championship Game Rematch.

13. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 7-7

It looked like for much of Week 14 that Team Sternberg would finally snap their losing-streak but at the very end of the Game, Defending Champs Team Gutman snatched the lead and the Win. Tyler Max had 25 in this one to account for much of their Offense. They just couldn’t get a bucket late and are really missing both the leadership of Captain Sternberg and the playmaking ability of Jamie Nikitas. They are a different Team without them. Remember, this is a group that has the ability to beat anyone. They were 7-1 and with Wins against the League’s best. They get Team Kaplan in Week 15, one of the two longest losing-skids in the League will be broken come Sunday.

14. Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 4-10

Two Wins in a row earns Team Apuli a spot in the Rankings this week. They are getting used to their new and improved roster and as they gain chemistry, they gain ground in the Standings as well. They are just a Game Back of getting out of the Bottom-6 and have 5 weeks left to do so. Robert Kamentsev went for 33 in their Win over Team Kaplan. They look to pull the shocker against #5 Team UC Booth next Sunday.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order )

Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 4-10

They ran into the super hot Team Zimmerman on Sunday Night and just couldn’t get stops. David Zale did have 18 in this one though. They are in a spot right now where if they can get on a bit of a roll they can get out of the Bottom-6 and will have a much easier time in the Playoffs. They get the tough Team McNichols squad on Sunday Night.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 2-12

Team Deutsch ran into #5 UC Booth.. No easy task. Schuyler Lauderdale went for 16 points to lead the Team in scoring on Sunday Night. They will soon get back Jeff Shukis who helps motor the Team along on the glass. They get Team Silver in Week 15. A Team they are currently a Game up on in the Standings. We should be in store for a good one there.

Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 5-9

Team Harris took on Team Jones and saw first-hand what Captain Gilles Jones is capable of as he went for 41 on the night. Alex Nadelman scored 23 points and Tyler Geocaris had 17 for Team Harris in the Loss.  These guys are still as dangerous as ever, just need their full line-up to get it done. They get #2 Team Lalez on Sunday Night.. Have to think.. If Zack Novak is in attendance, we may be in-store for a shake-up near the top of the Rankings.

Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-12

Team Kaplan faced Team Apuli on Sunday Night and couldn’t come out on top. Jacob Preskill led with 23 and Axel Playner scored 22 in the Loss.  They had just 5 guys again and were without Bret Darcy and Tred Dean in this one.. Not a recipe for success. Looking ahead they have a very winnable Game with Team Sternberg who has dropped 6 straight Games. One of these losing-skids will come to an end on Sunday Night!

Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 5-9

They gave #1 Team Kozin all they could handle on Sunday Night in a great Game that was fiercely competed with both Teams only sporting 5 guys on a side.. Again, they showed they can play up to any Team in the League. Greg Gonzalez had 22 points and Anthony Bernardi chipped in 15. These guys will have another tough battle as they are in the middle of the hardest part of their schedule.. #4 Team Wong awaits in Week 15.

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 1-13

Team Silver put on a great comeback in the final stages of Sunday Night’s Game with Team McNichols. They were down as much as 19 points in the Second Half and stormed back to make it a one possession Game in the final minute. They just ran out of time.. Captain EJ Silver hit a bunch of big shots and totaled 33 points, Bryan Sykora had 26 and Gage Coleman had 20 to account for all but 7 of their points in this one. They will look face Team Deutsch in Week 15 who is just 1 Game up on Team Silver in the Standings. This is an important one.

That’s it for this week! See everyone on Sunday
