Power Rankings

1. Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 15-2

13 was not an unlucky number for Team Kozin on Sunday afternoon as they defeated Team Lalez to tip-off Week 17 and push their win streak to 13 straight. They are on fire right now and look pretty much unbeatable.. Michael Halusek had 20 and Josh Davis had 14 in this one. They are one more Win or a Team Wong Loss away from clinching the #1 seed for the Playoffs. They will put their streak on the line against #4 Team Zimmerman’s 8 Game streak.. Only one of those can live through Sunday.. Game of the Week? You bet.

2. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 13-4

In a day with many headlines, Team Wong was upset by #12 Team Sternberg in a Game that they could have and maybe should have won. Lane Barlow had 27 on the night. They were without Tim Szatko but still held a nice size advantage with Captain Jon Wong serving as the Team’s back-up center. They also had depth on their side as Team Sternberg had just 5 guys in attendance. It was close down the stretch but Sternberg’s squad hit all of their free throws late to ice it. They weren’t hurt much in the Standings since Team Lalez also lost but now both Teams Maione and Malvin sit just a Game Back with 2 to play.. They play the tough #9 Team McNichols in Week 18. A Loss from them or a Win from Team Kozin, seals the #1 seed for Team Kozin.

3. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 13-4

As mentioned at the top, Team Lalez  fell to Team Kozin on Sunday afternoon in a close one.. They stay put in the Rankings as no one was within reach of their spot coming into this Week.. That can change though this coming Sunday.. #4 Team Zimmerman will be hot on their heels if they can dethrone #1 Team Kozin next Sunday.. Anyways, Scott Campbell went for 26 points and 11 boards on Sunday. Dennis McKinney also went for 20 in this one. They look to get everything right in the next two weeks with Team Silver and then Team Schwartz in Week 19 to close everything out.. They are gearing up for a 3rd Crown in 4 years…

4. Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 11-6

8 straight and this one came without Captain/Coach Jack Zimmerman roaming the sidelines. They are playing the best we’ve seen out of them since last year’s run to the Championship Game. Riaz Hoveydai and Esto Vega both went for 22 points in the Win on Sunday Night against Team Silver. They now look ahead to their premier match-up with #1 Team Kozin. It’s a Rematch of the semi-final from a year ago and of course both Teams have these gigantic win streaks in tact.. They are squarely a part of the Game of the Week and if they can get this streak to 9 (and then 10) they still have a shot at cracking the Top-4 which 10 weeks ago seemed like an absolute impossibility.

5. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 12-5

Team Maione got their second straight Win and was well over 100 points for the second straight week as well. They are looking to have turned the corner a bit in what was a rougher than usual month of February for them. They are putting the hurt on people from the Offensive end, just giving opposing Defenses nightmares. Chris Ray went for 38 on the night in what was an unbelievable shooting display. They were down early to Team Harris and then just stormed in front and never looked back. Andy Timson had 21 and Chris Wroblewski took on more of a facilitator role with 8 assists to go along with 15 points. They get Defending Champs Team Gutman in Week 18.  Every Game is huge from here on out..

6. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 12-5

Team Malvin earned their 3rd straight Win on Sunday Night and that totals 12 on the season as they are trying to fight their way into a Top-4 seed over the next couple of weeks. Brandon Snowden had another impressive Game with 23 points. Both Rodney Clark and Nate Johnson had 16 as well. These guys also had a bit of a rough patch in February but have righted the ship just in time. They have two tough Games to close out the season.. The seemingly back to normal Team Sternberg and then Team Purimetla. If they go 2-0 down the stretch they can potentially sneak into the 4th spot and earn an extra BYE in the Playoffs.

7. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 11-6

8. Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 10-7

Team Jones bounced back nicely this Week to defeat Team Kaplan by a ton. It was a really strong showing by Captain Gilles and co. He had 26 and Darek Wojewnik had 15 in the Win. They have a tough end to the season.. Team UC Booth this coming Sunday sits a Game ahead of them and then #1 Team Kozin to close it out.. A win this Sunday would be huge for them as a Top-7 seed is still in play for them.. The 5-7 seeds get a BYE that Teams seeded 8-15 don’t receive. Maybe their most important Game to to date, awaits..

9. Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 10-7

They went toe to toe with Team Malvin in a close one but just came up a bit short late. Romeo Magloire had 17 while Marlowe Soriano and Joe Kozak had 16 in this one. We mentioned it last week — they have a rough finish to the schedule — upcoming is #2 Team Wong and then #5 Team Maione.. They have to hope for a split or they are going to get passed by a couple of Teams behind them.. Big-time Games for them coming..

10. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 10-7

Team Purimetla got the Win on Sunday against Team Schwartz. Sam Leewood was their leading scorer once again with 34 points. They will close out the season against Team Apuli and then #6 Team Malvin.  If they can go 2-0 they still have an outside shot at a Top-7 seed. Big Games upcoming.

11. Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 8-9

The Defending Champs got their 3rd W in 4 weeks on Sunday.. This time they defeated Team Deutsch in a Game that was much closer than anyone expected.. They needed a bucket with under 10 seconds to get the Win. Marin Kukoc finished with 22 and Andy Marks finished with 21 and that was enough to earn the 62-60 W. They take on #5 Team Maione and #2 Team Wong to close out the season as they continue to try and heat up before truly defending the Crown in the Playoffs.

12. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 9-8

Team Sternberg got a big, BIG win on Sunday Night and you have to sort of think this could be a pivot point for them in their season.. Let’s just reset on them for a bit.. They were 7-1 with their Team at full strength during 2016.  They lost a chunk of their roster in the New Year and really struggled.. They were 8-8 coming into Week 17 against Team Wong.. This was a chance for them to turn the tides and get some real momentum heading into the home stretch.. Something other Teams will be upset to see.. Tyler Max returned to score FORTY-ONE points on Sunday Night with many of them coming at the end of the Game to fight off #2 Team Wong. Both he and Max Shulruff hit key free throws down the stretch and they landed the biggest Win of 2017 for them, and likely the season. They are once again over .500 and now have two Games left against #6 Team Malvin and then Team Apuli. Can they run the table?

13. Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 7-10

Team Harris fell to Team Maione on Sunday Night. It marked the first time this group had most of their roster in tact for a Loss this season. Team Maione, as they often do, just caught fire.. There are performances when Teams will have beaten anyone in front of them.. The way Team Maione shot the ball on Sunday Night.. They would have defeated each of the other 19 Teams in the League.. It just happens.. Team Harris happen to be the unlucky bunch in their way. Zack Novak had 26 in the Loss and Tyler Geocaris added 23 for them as well. While they can’t finish over .500 now they will be heavy favorites against both Team Deutsch and Team Kaplan to finish the season.. Both Teams only have two wins a piece.. They should be feeling good when we begin the Playoffs on April 2.

14. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 6-11

Team Cohen got one of the most exciting Wins of the Season on Sunday Night.  They and Team Apuli went back and forth for 44 minutes. At different times, both Teams held the lead and it was truly anyone’s Game.. With about 10 seconds left Team Apuli would tie the Game.  Team Cohen wound up with the ball on the sideline, out of bounds, with 1.4 seconds left.. As we stated at the open, Michael Pisanelli would hurl the ball to the right block, flying just over the outstretched arms of the Defender and Oren Schwartz would catch it and lay it in (while in mid-air) as the buzzer sounded. Just incredible. Kyle Daniels had 23 in the Win by the way and Jake Shlofrock shot the ball well, he finished with 17. They finish up against Team Schwartz and then Team Silver.. They have a real shot at going 3-0 to close out the season here..

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 5-12

We have touched on it a couple of times already in the Power Rankings but they suffered a heartbreaking Loss to Team Cohen on Sunday Night. It was a really well played Game and both Teams could have come out on top.. Team Cohen just had the last crack at it and made an incredible play at the end to Win it. Connor Harlander scored 23 while Robert Kamentsev and Steve Login both had 22 for them. This Team is playing at a level that is MUCH higher than a 5-12 club. Just beware when you come across them in the Playoffs. They get Team Purimetla this week and then Team Sternberg to close it out.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 2-15

They came incredibly close to knocking off the Defending Champs here. They would fall by a last second field goal but you can tell this group is getting much better as the season progresses. They have a shocker in them come Playoff time.. You can just feel it. Phil Mcneal made his debut and scored 20. Jeff Shukis also chipped in with 14 points and a ton of effort around the glass. They finish the season against Team Harris and then Team James. They can knock one of those Teams off if they play well..

Team James (Chipotle) – 7-10

They got what will be their easiest Win of the Season — and some fun in the process. Good Team-building for them as we head down the stretch..

Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-15

Team Kaplan suffered a bad Loss on Sunday Night. Once again they were just outnumbered as it seems they just can’t get everyone there week to week. Tredrick Dean scored 14 to lead them in scoring. They get Team James and then Team Harris to close out the Regular Season. If they play well, a Win can be had there, so they can snap that skid and not bring in that baggage into the Playoffs.

Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 5-12

Team Schwartz hung with Team Purimetla for about 30 minutes and then Sam Leewood poured in a couple more 3s and that was that. Jonathan Blakley had 19 in this one to lead them in scoring. They will finish the Regular Season against Team Cohen and then 2x Champs Team Lalez. They’d need to go 2-0 and get some help to pull out of the Opening Round but crazier things have happened.

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 2-14

Team Silver came across the streaking Team Zimmerman on Sunday Night at the wrong time.. Team Zimmerman, last year’s Runners-Up are playing their best ball of the year right now.. Gage Coleman had 19 points and the now Playoff-eligible Bryan Sykora had 16. They get 2x Champs Team Lalez this coming Sunday before finishing the season with Team Cohen.

That’s it for Week 17. See everyone on Sunday for our second to last week of the Regular Season!
