2016-17 Chicago Hoops – Week 3 (Nov. 6)

By
Updated: November 8, 2016

After a week off to all the Cubs to WIN THE WORLD SERIES, we are back on track with the Chicago Hoops League. Entering this past Sunday, the 3rd Week of Games, we had six Teams at 2-0.. Following Week 3, we were left with just two Undefeated squads.. Teams Maione and McNichols.  Many would have pegged Team Maione, who has finished as the #1 seed, in each of the past two seasons, but for those who didn’t play this Summer, Team McNichols will be quite the surprise.. They are for real.  Get used to them being near the top of the Rankings. Joining those two Teams, we have 10 more squads that are 2-1.. The League is as deep as ever!

Power Rankings

1. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 3-0

The biggest Win of Week 3 easily goes to Team Maione.  Not only are they off to another hot start at 3-0 but they took down Rivals Team Lalez in a Rematch of our very first Chicago Hoops League Championship (back in 2013-14 season).  The newly engaged (Congrats!!) Chris Wroblewski led the way on Offense along side newcomer Chris Ray, both finished with 26 points for the #1 Ranked Team Maione squad.  Ray has been exactly what these guys have missed in recent Playoff Games. Another big who can score and create his own shot. Great addition for them. Week 4 brings them Team Apuli.

2. Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 3-0

3-0 in their first Chicago Hoops League run.. Not too shabby!  For those curious, this has not been a case of an easy schedule either.. Remember they knocked off #4 Team Zimmerman to start the season… Joe Kozak had a Team-high 17 points in his All Sports Series debut. This crew is exceptionally deep. They always have 5 guys on the court who can score. They defend very well and really put pressure on the opposing Team’s guards. Captain Chris had 15 here to help his squad as well. As they continue to stock pile wins they are going to quickly get on the League’s radar.. They won’t mind, they are that good. They get the 0-3 Team James in Week 4.

3. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 2-1

They took on Rivals Team Maione on Sunday but were down much of their usual core including Co-Captains Benny Lalez and Joe Hakimian. They were also without Dave Gershenzon.. So they had plenty of “picking up the slack” to do.. They fell behind by 18 quickly. But stormed back at the end of the first half to make it just a 3 point Game at recess. Scott Campbell finished with 33 and Dennis McKinney went for 17 on the night. In the second half they were just gassed from giving it everything they had to amount their first comeback.. Team Maione just kept scoring and it was too much on this night, dealing them their first Loss.. They will look to get back on track against the sneaky good Team Jones in Week 4.

4. Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 2-1

We’ve gained some perspective on what many considered a surprise Week 1 Loss for Team Zimmerman a few weeks back.. 1) Team McNichols, now at 3-0, is really really good. 2) Team Zimmerman needed a couple of weeks to figure out life without Kyle Nelson.. Shockingly enough, they now sit at 2-1, and all is seemingly okay.  Those two straight wins come without Riaz Hoveydai and Eugene Connor who are on the DL, and should return soon. In their absence others have had opportunities to step up, including Nate Batemen (22 points on Sunday), Dave Altman (21 points on Sunday) and Esto Vega (18 points on Sunday).  They are rounding into form together and just in time for a big clash with the improved 2-1 Team Sternberg.

5. Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 2-1

Rounding out the Top-5 is Team Kozin. They won their second straight on Sunday.  Their Defense is really the story as they are holding Teams in the 60s every week.. Their Offense had the best Game of the young season as well against previously undefeated Team Purimetla. Randall Hampton had 20 on the night and Bryant Orange had 21 to lead the Team in scoring during his All Sports Series debut. He is another big-time addition as the League continues to get better and better.  If they continue to lock in on D they are going to be to really tough to beat.  This is a group that is coming for the Crown.  They are going to be a part of the Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Game of the Week on Sunday with #6…

6. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 2-1

.. That’s right, we are in store for a clash of two Top-6 Teams next week, both sitting at 2-1 and both have won two straight.. Team Malvin and Team Kozin will be the Week 4 Game of the Week! Let’s get back to his past Sunday for Team Malvin.. They were without Nate Johnson and facing the formerly 2-0 Team UC Booth squad.. In the past, that would have meant a Loss may be looming.. This Team Malvin crew has turned the corner however. They just know how to Win Games.   They got 26 points from Matt Merrigan and 25 from Rodney Clark in this one to lead the way. Their Captain Mike Malvin made his debut this season. Like Team McNichols, their depth is a huge asset as they can always run 5 fresh bodies on to the court and each know their roles well.  Green arrow point up for Team Malvin.

7. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 2-1

Team UC Booth took their first L of the Season on Sunday Night. Everything that we said about them through two weeks still holds true. They were fantastic in their first two outings.  They were extremely short-handed on Sunday Night as many of their Team were competing in their annual B-School Competition (hope it went well!).  While they had enough to get a Win they ran into a really good Team Malvin squad and it just wasn’t to be. Matthew Schick and Victor Ojeleye each had 17 on the night. They’ll look to get back on track against Team Silver in Week 4.

8. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 2-1

The most exciting Win of Week 3 went to Team Wong. They have now won both of their Games this season by a combined 8 points. It shows that they are good in pressure situations.. Should bode well for next Spring. Anyways, back to Sunday.. They held a double digit lead down the stretch against Team Harris. However, with a couple minutes to go Team Harris got hot and tied it up at 66 with just seconds remaining.  Team Wong did not panic, as most Teams might, and manufactured a Game-Winning bucket to grab their 2nd W of the campaign. Lane Barlow led with 16 and Tim Szatko had double figures as well. They have to find a way to get him more low-post touches as he is the best in the League down on the block.  Next Week they take on another 2-1 squad, Team Kaplan.

9. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 2-1

Team Cohen got an impressive and decisive victory over previously unbeaten Team Kaplan on Sunday Night. They also welcomed back both Kyle Daniels and Justin Bowen who made their season debuts and added some much needed size back in the equation for Team Cohen. They really looked great in Week 3 and it is starting to look like they are going to give just about everyone in the League match-up problems. With the two guys we already mentioned and the other additions they made in the off-season, it is really really hard to stop them. They also have enough athletes now to keep Teams from scoring on them. They are only allowing 62.7 points agains per game which is 4th best in the League right now. They are on the rise. They get familiar foes Team Harris in Week 4 who are starving for a Win.

10. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 2-1

Team Sternberg got a big Win to get back up and over .500 on Sunday Night. They defeated a very tough Team Jones and it should be a Win that is looked back upon fondly when tiebreakers come into play before the Playoffs.  They got some debuts on Sunday Night most notably from Mack Watts and Jamie Nikitas. Both are All Sports Series vets but are new to the Chicago Hoops League.  Everyone should get to know the Nikitas name as he will be mentioned often from here on out. He went for 35 in his Hoops League debut and can do it all.  Team Sternberg may have had the best off-season of any Team in the entire League, it just took a couple of weeks to really show it off. They are title contenders.

11. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 2-1

They came into Week 3 at 2-0 and have looked very good to open the season.  They certainly did not play their best Game on Sunday against Team Kozin.  They averaged 82 points a Game in their first two Wins but only scored 64 on Sunday Night. Much of that can be contributed to Team Kozin and their stellar D.  Team Purimetla did have a big positive from Sunday though as they welcomed Derek Reich into the fray. He helps form one of the biggest and best front-lines in the League. He had 27 points on Sunday.  This group will be just fine and they look to rebound against the Defending Champs Team Gutman in Week 4.

12. Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-1

Similar to Team Purimetla just ahead of them, they started the Season 2-0 before falling in Week 3. They met a tough Team Cohen squad that was welcoming back a couple great front-line players in Justin Bowen and Kyle Daniels. This group is going to continue to grow together and they were missing a lot of scoring punch this week, the fact that they are 2-1 in their first 3 Games together, is great news. Tred Dean had 21 to lead the group. Next week they take on another 2-1 squad, Team Wong.

13. Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 1-2

The Defending Champs got their first Win of the season and believe it or not, this 1-2 start, is actually a better one than they had a year ago.. They are going to save their best ball for when it matters most. They managed to get the Win and with only 5 guys at the Game. Very tough to do. Marin Kukoc had 25 after missing a week with a knee injury. Good to see him back out there. All of their other players got into double figures as well: Adam Rhum, Alec Wise, Danny Cowin and Captain Jordan Reisner. It was a good bounce back week and they’ll look to climb back to .500 against the tough Team Purimetla crew.

14. Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 1-2

Team Schwartz rounds out the Rankings this week after notching their first Win of the Season on Sunday Night. Greg Gonzalez led the way with 28 and Austin Brown had 22 in Game.  They really looked as good as we have seen them play in quite some time as they got over 90 on the Offensive end and kept Team James in the 60s. Their length is going to be an issue for opposing Teams and the more comfortable they get with one another the better they are going to be.  They look to get back to .500 next Sunday against Team Deutsch.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 0-3

They fought last year’s Runners-Up Team Zimmerman until the end and was certainly in the Game before finally falling 77-70. Brian Behnke had a team-high 18 and Captain Justin Apuli had 16 to go along with him.  They are not getting the Wins they covet right now but we’ve seen them start slow in the past before going on a tear.. They are going to be just fine.. This week they have a chance to pull a true shocker with #1 Team Maione up next.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 1-2

We’ve set in the Power Rankings numerous times.. It’s impossibly difficult to play and win with 5 guys in this League. There’s just too much talent and you get too gassed. That is what Team Deutsch tried to do against a deep Team McNichols squad and it didn’t go well. Depth is an issue for them right now as they continue to round out the squad. They are not short on talent, just bodies.. Captain Justin Deutsch had 17 to lead the Team in scoring.  They are playing a fellow 1-2 squad in Week 4, Team Schwartz, as they try to get back to .500!

Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 0-3

They dug themselves quite a whole and managed to storm back in the final two minutes of the Game.. They were down 12 and tied it up at 66. However, Team Wong hit a Game-Winner with under a second left to deal Team Harris their 3rd Loss on the young season. This is a group that is still figuring out their new pieces and also haven’t played at close to full-strength yet. The Teams that have caught them in earlier in the season will be very pleased that they don’t see them at 100%. Alex Nadelman and Captain Brian Harris went for 17 on the night. They take on the tough Team Cohen in Week 4.

Team James (Chipotle) – 0-3

They fell to 0-3 this Week after falling to Team Schwartz.  Scott Sangster had 20 and Kyree Beamon had 16. The positives here are that they have shown through 3 weeks that they have several different guys who can fill it up on the Offensive end. However, they are giving up a League worst 91 points per Game. They are the only Team even close to 90 Points Against right now. They have to fix it defensively. The Teams in the League have too much talent to not give it 100% on both ends of the floor. It’s still early and they will be just fine. They’ll figure out their rotations and that will allow for focus on Defense to come through more. They have 3-0 Team McNichols next.

Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 1-2

These guys took part in one of the best Games of the Night with Team Sternberg on Sunday. They ended falling 92-86 in an up and down affair.. Captain Gilles Jones lit it up in the stat sheet with 36 points on the night. Ron Nandi had 18 and Tre Williams had 15 as well. These guys were a bit short-handed and that may have done them in on a night where they were playing so fast-paced and against a full Team Sternberg roster. Team Jones is very good, despite their 1-2 start, they’ve had a tough schedule to open up.. It won’t get any easier with the 2x Champs Team Lalez, who are also coming off a Loss, next week.

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 0-3

Gage Coleman continues to impress as he put in 29 points on the night. They stuck with the Defending Champs throughout and try to make a surge late but just didn’t have enough left in the tank. They have enough to get wins but they would really benefit from a true point guard who can set up easier shots for his teammates. They have to fight very hard on every possession to get good looks. It’s still early in the season and an acquisition could be made. Either way, even in a Loss, it was an encouraging Game for a group still getting to know one another.

That’s it for week 3. See everyone on Sunday!
