Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 5-1

Another Week, Another Win for the 2x Champs. That makes it 3 in a row and obviously 5 of 6 to start the season. They are rolling and that is a very scary thing for the rest of the League.  They got a 30+ Win on Sunday against Team Deutsch… At times it seemed like it could have even been bigger, especially in the second half when they really turned it on.. Scott Campbell had 30 points and 9 boards. Dave Gershenzon added 23 points as well. Dennis McKinney also continued to give them another big-time scoring threat as he went for 17. Looking ahead they will get Team Apuli and then a clash with Rivals Team Zimmerman.  It’s a very realistic possibility we will see Team Lalez go into 2017 at a strong 7-1.  Must take care of business though.

2. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 5-1

They had 2 weeks to stew about their Week 5 Loss to Team Sternberg, in what was one of the best Games of the Season thus far.. They certainly came to play on Sunday evening when they took on Team Zimmerman. This was a statement Game for them. Team Zimmerman wasn’t at full strength but they defeated them by 24 points. That is the Team who finished 2nd last season.. So, yes, Week 5 was just a blip and these guys got right back to the Winner’s Circle. Happy Birthday goes out to Chris Wroblewski as well. The bday boy had 17 points. Chris Ray led the way with 21. Andy Timson turned in a double double too. They will face-off with Team Schwartz in Week 7 in what will surely be a fiery affair and then close out 2016 with Team Deutsch, which is Captained by Bradley Deutsch’s younger brother Justin.

3. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 5-1

Holding firm at #3 this Week is Team Malvin who jumped out to a 28 point lead at halftime over Team Kaplan. They found themselves in a true fight though down the stretch and as Team Kaplan wouldn’t give up and ended up holding on for the 5 point Win. Matt Merrigan showed once again why he is one of the most dangerous guys in the League. He went for 28 and Rodney Clark scored 22 to chip in as well. Rodney also iced the Game with a key steal in the final minute that led to a fast-break layup. Nate Johnson and Captain Mike were also in double figures.. Another key bucket of the Game came from Shaun Albert with a runner in the lane to help seal the W. They get a better than advertised Team Harris next Sunday before closing out 2016 against current #6 Team Wong in Week 8.

4. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 5-1

Some Wins are easier than others. They’ll take it.

5. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 5-1

Their Win streak is now at 4 Games following their grind-it-out dub over Team James on Sunday Night. Team James has had a rough go of it to start but they don’t lack talent and surely pushed Team Sternberg on Sunday.  We keep seeing this group find ways to Win Games.. A mark of a truly great squad. They won this week without Jamie Nikitas and it was an opportunity for others on the Team to really shine. Tyler Max had his best Game of the Season, going for 31 points. Jonathon Gac had 22 points, 8 boards and really altered the Game on the Defensive end.. Nikitas is rightfully getting a lot of pub, but he too has been a gigantic acquisition. Literally and figuratively. They get Team Deutsch this coming Sunday Night before a clash with current #7 Team McNichols in what will be one of the highlights of Week 8, before we come to a close of 2016.

6. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 5-1

Tim Szatko ladies and gentlemen.  The guy has certainly gotten his fair share of headlines since bursting on to the All Sports Series scene a year ago and Sunday he showed just why that is the case.. The guy went for 34 and 17 boards to boot in Week 6. He was simply dominant in the paint on both ends of the floor and completely dictated how the Game would be played.. Lane Barlow chipped in 16 as well for Team Wong, who got their 5th Win in 6 tries this season, this one against Team Cohen. They have a very tough road to close out 2016 as they will take on #4 Team UC Booth in Week 7 and follow-up that up with current #3 Team Malvin. Huge opportunity to end the calendar year on a high note.

7. Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 5-1

Team McNichols finished in the Winner’s Circle on Sunday Night and it was on the heels of the most intense Game of the Night.  They and Team Schwartz battled back and forth for a grueling 44 minutes that saw them finish the Game ahead 72-70.  Joe Kozak was super impressive once again as he went for 30 on the night to go along with 12 boards. This crew really keeps their composure late in Games and it bodes well for them when the Playoffs roll around. They are calm, cool and collected. They get the streaking Team Jones in Week 7 before a big-time Game with current #5 Team Sternberg in Week 8 to close out 2016.

8. Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 4-2

Somehow Team Kozin is managing to fly under the radar.. You know, the same Team Kozin that has made it to Championship Sunday two years running.. The same Team Kozin who has routinely made people pay for taking them lightly when it really counts.. Well, through 6 weeks they are now 4-2 with some big time Ws.. Their most recent win came this Sunday came over the Defending Champs Team Gutman.  Randall Hampton led the Team with 19, Mitch Bouie had 18 and Michael Halusek added 16. Team Kozin will be favored over the last two weeks of 2016 as they take on Team Kaplan and then Team Silver.  They could very well enter 2017 at 6-2.. Imagine what these guys could do with a favorable playoff seed, considering the damage they’ve done from the middle of the pack the past two seasons.. Scary.

9. Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 3-3

Their W on Sunday over Team Apuli makes it two straight for these guys as they get back the .500 mark for the first time this season.. Remember, they have 3 Losses this season and they have come to #1 Lalez, #2 Maione and #5 Sternberg.. This is a group that is really ready for a major breakout when the calendar turns to 2017… They held on despite a big comeback effort from Team Apuli on Sunday Night thanks in large part to Captain Gilles Jones, who had 34 points on the Night (he co-led the League in Week 6). Darek Wojewnik had 19 and Garrett Staniec had 18 points and 9 boards. They get #7 Team McNichols who are 5-1 this coming Sunday and then closeout the calendar year with the winless Team James crew.. They’d be happy with a split but they could very well close the year on a 4-Game W-streak. They’ll need their best next week to Win.

10.  Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 2-4

Back into the Top-10 this week is Team Harris.  They are now 2-1 in their last 3 Games after starting 0-3. No surprise that their Wins also coincide with Games Played from Zack Novak who really opens up the floor for the rest of the Team. They had FIVE guys over 13 points on Sunday Night, including Novak. That’s incredible depth. Mike Goldstein led the way with 17 and Alex Nadelman, Eric Handrich and Captain Brian were all over 13 as well. These guys are so much better than their 2-4 record indicates, especially when they have the bulk of the roster.. Expect a big run coming soon. They will be pushed to finish the calendar year though.. They get #3 Team Malvin next Sunday and then close out 2016 with the Defending Champs Team Gutman in Week 8.

11. Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 3-3

Team Zimmerman was last season’s Runners-Up. This past Summer they became the first Team in Chicago Men’s “All Sports” League 7-year history to go Back2Back. This is one of the most storied Franchises in League history and right now.. They are going through a rough patch. They found themselves on the opposite end of a tough Loss against #2 Team Maione on Sunday. They had just 5 guys and they just couldn’t keep up. This is a group that is still among the most talented in the League, despite Kyle Nelson’s departure (it bares repeating, we know it’s been mentioned a lot).. They are just going to need some time to figure everything out. Esto Vega did have 26 in this one. Looking ahead, they will take on the winless Team James in an attempt to get right before they do battle with Rivals Team Lalez in their final Game of the calendar year.

12. Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 2-4

Following Week 6 last season, the Defending Champs were 2-4 and in the “Rest of the Pack” section of the Rankings.. They would end up taking a 3-6 record into the Winter Break before turning it on in the second half of the season and climbing all the way up to the #6 seed before Winning the Crown in the Playoffs.. So really, they are ahead of last year in the sense that they are actually IN the rankings following the same 2-4 start this season. The perks of being the Champs.. They haven’t gotten off to the start they’ve hoped for but they certainly aren’t panicking following their Loss to Team Kozin, in what was a good Game.. One bright spot on Sunday was Stephen Albrecht who made his debut for the Defending Champs. He had 18. He is going to provide another key scoring option for them. They get Team Cohen next Sunday and then Team Harris to close out 2016.  Both Teams share the same 2-4 record with them.. Can they get to .500 heading into the new year?

13. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 3-3

14. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 2-4

Team Cohen holds on to the final spot in the Rankings this week, despite their Loss to Team Wong on Sunday Night. They have lost a few straight and will have to Win in Week 7 to stay Ranked.  They have a strong frontline but just couldn’t keep Tim Szatko away from the rim on Sunday Night. That was the difference in the Game. Matt Malone led them in scoring with 17 on the night.  Jake Shlofrock had 16 as well. This group is still learning each other’s Games and are going to be fine. They have too much talent to not start getting into the Win column before long. Justin Bowen wouldn’t hurt either. They get Defending Champs Team Gutman next Sunday and finish 2016 with Team Purimetla before the Winter Break.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 1-5

They were fresh off their first W of the season and were looking to make it two in a row.. They got off to a slow start that ended up doing them in against Team Jones. They made a furious comeback in the second half behind a plethora of 3-balls.. They got it into a one possession Game late, but just couldn’t overtake the lead.. Eddie Tellez led with 27. Brian Behnke had 23 and Captain Justin went for 17 in this one. They are playing much better basketball than they did to start the season and 2017 should produce much better results. They’ll finish the calendar year against Team Lalez and then Team Schwartz.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 1-5

Team Deutsch had a tough task on Sunday Night.. 2x Champs and #1 Team Lalez.. They actually kept it interesting going into halftime, they trailed by just 13 and had kept it competitive. They only had 5 guys though and the second half, their lack of bench really did them in.  They saw the debut of Jack Gurvey who is really going to help them. He was a member of the Team Wellek squad, who just won the Suburbs College/Prep League this past Summer. He had a dozen in his debut. They have a very tough end to 2016, with Team Sternberg and Team Maione looming.. The schedule will get easier though in 2017 and they can get on a roll..

Team James (Chipotle) – 0-6

They hung in there all Game long with #5 Team Sternberg but just couldn’t get into the Winner’s Circle just yet.. They are so much better than their record indicates that it’s going to be genuinely surprising to Teams later in the season when they come across them.. Teams are going to sleep on them and they will make them pay.. This is a group that should have a 180 turnaround in the second half of the season.. Scott Sangster impressed again with 28. Captain Christian James had 18 and Kyree Beamon had 17.  They just need one win to turn it around. They have two .500 teams to finish the calendar year.. The struggling Team Zimmerman and then Team Jones to close 2016.

Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-4

Team Kaplan started off the Game slowly against #3 Team Malvin and despite second half heroics they just couldn’t get the W. They were down 28 at halftime, which coincided with Tred Dean’s arrival to the Game and it was as if a switch had been flipped.. They had gotten to within 2 points in the final minute of the Game but just couldn’t over take Team Malvin.  Tred had an insane 25 points in the second half of this Game. Just remarkable. Bret Darcy also went for 25 in the full game and Axel Playner added 15.  They were right there with one of the best groups in the League. They should feel encouraged, especially playing shorthanded. They have a tough finish to 2016.. They will face Team Kozin and then Team UC Booth, who share a combined 3 Losses so far this season.. Things will ease up schedule wise after the New Year.

Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 2-4

They battled in what felt like a Playoff-like atmosphere on Sunday Night against 5-1 Team McNichols. This game went back and forth for its entirety and an untimely technical foul call against them really hurt them in the closing moments of the Game. This group is playing much better basketball than we’ve seen from them in the past and a lot of that has to do with the full integration of Greg Gonzalez. Not only is he doing work in and around the basket but it’s really opening up lanes for guys who have always been able to put in the basket. This group is better than 2-4 and eventually their record will catch-up to their level of play. Gonzalez had 25 and Jon Sider had 14.. He almost connected on a half-court heave at the buzzer to give his Team the win as well.. They have #2 Team Maione and then Team Apuli to close-out the calendar year.

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 0-6

Had a tough Team Harris group on Sunday and did so without their leading scorer Gage Coleman who was out nursing a sore ankle.. In his absence Captain EJ Silver stepped up and went for 23 points while Sean Cassel poured in 19. These guys keep battling and won’t let their slow start stop them. They get Team Purimetla and then Team Kozin to finish 2016.  They are capable of getting a win here in those last two Games and setting themselves up for a nice run in 2017.

That’s it for Week 6. See everyone back at it on Sunday for Week 7!
