We entered the Week with 7 Teams tied atop the Standings with just 1 Loss.. Week 7 saw two of those Teams go down.. Team Wong got the Win of the Night over Team UC Booth in a clash of 1-Loss Teams.. Power Rankings

1. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – 6-1

The former 2x Champs Team Lalez kept humming along on Sunday Night, grabbing their sixth W in seven Games to start the campaign. They were without many of their regulars and didn’t have the depth they normally utilize. With just five guys they were still able to get past Team Apuli and in impressive fashion. Scott Campbell had 27 points on the night, Brennan Keller had 21 and Captain Benny had 25 to give the Offense more than enough to get it done. They end 2016 with familiar foes and Rivals Team Zimmerman, who have been struggling as of late, can they finish the calendar year out strong? Most likely.

2. Team Maione (Southview Athletics) – 6-1

No surprise here, sticking at #2 is Team Maione, who with just 5 guys in the lineup put up 109 points on Team Schwartz in Week 7. All 5 of their Players were well into the double digits.. Chris Ray – 29, Chris Wroblewski – 28, Brad Detusch and Josh Berman – 18 and Andy Timson – 16.  That is team basketball and something that other Teams would be wise to take a page or two from. This group knows how to make the extra pass and when to shoot. That’ll happen when you play 100+ Games together over a few-year span. They look to keep their share of 1st in the Standings heading into 2017 when they take on Team Deutsch, Captained by Bradley’s younger brother Justin.

3. Team Malvin (StudentCity) – 6-1

Holding serve at #3 this week is Team Malvin. They are playing GREAT basketball (current 5-Game Win Streak) and this is no longer a one or two man show.. This group defeated the always sound Team Harris crew on Sunday Night and did so without Nate Johnson, Matt Merrigan or Peter Szostak who happen to be 3 of their leading scorers coming into Sunday.. In their place others stepped up.. Brandon Snowden is a name that doesn’t get enough pub and he’s a big reason why they have taken the leap into the elite tier this season. He had 24 points on Sunday. Captain Mike Malvin also stepped up with his first 20+ Game of the Season (with 10 boards) and Rodney Clark continues to do it all on both ends of the floor. He may be the most dangerous perimeter D-man in the League.. He’s going to get steals and go the other way on you. Be ready. They finish 2016 in the Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Game of the Week against the Team currently sitting in the #4 spot…

4. Team Wong (Biaggi’s Purple) – 6-1

Ascending to #4 this Week is Team Wong.  They take the spot from Team UC Booth who entered the Week at #4.  Team Wong turned in a complete Game performance against UC Booth on Sunday Night, and despite UC Booth being without many of their regular starters (School Trip), they likely would have beaten anyone in the League on Sunday. Team Wong’s best may just be better than any other group in the League.. Lane Barlow had 30 and Tim Szatko had 18. These guys routinely combine for 40-50s. We’ve said it before but they might just be the best inside/outside combo in the League. As stated above, they will get #3 Team Malvin in the Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Game of the Week to close out the Calendar Year.. One of those 2 Teams will win their 6th straight while the other will need to start a new streak… Can they grab hold of the #3 spot (or higher) before we get to 2017?!

5. Team Sternberg (Pear Tree Catering) – 6-1

Rounding out the Top-5 once again this week is Team Sternberg who defeated Team Deutsch with just 5 guys on Sunday evening (if you are noticing a theme… the snow certainly kept some people home this Sunday).. This too, was their 5th W in a row, tied for the longest active streak in the League with #3 Malvin and #4 Wong. Anyways, they had more than enough to pick-up their 6th W of the season. Tyler Max and Max Shulruff combined for 55 points in this Game which outscored their opponent by a point on Sunday. Very impressive stuff. Another great Game we have in store for Week 8 is Team Sternberg v. #9 (5-2) Team McNichols. Should be a fun finish to 2016.

6.  Team Kozin (Peak Properties) – 5-2

Team Kozin picked up their 3rd straight Win on Sunday Night, this time defeating Team Kaplan, and soundly. They had 4 guys in double figures including Josh Davis who had 19, Matt Wolk with 13 and Captain Jason who had a dozen. These guys are rounding into form even earlier this year, which is scary, and Welcomed Back Rashad Singleton to the fray on Sunday. Rashad had started the season on the DL but his presence gives them one of the best wing-defenders in the League and another great athlete everywhere on the court.. They thrilled to get him back.  They look to get to 6-2 before Winter Break next week against Team Silver.

7. Team UC Booth (Biaggi’s Red) – 5-2

UC Booth had some unfortunate luck with scheduling this past week.. Most of their Team was gone on a school ski trip and what was left of it had a very tough task.. Current #4 Team Wong. That’s not a group you want to play short-handed.. They put up a fight for a while but faded against the depth of Team Wong in the second half.. Ben Hanessian had 25 and Matthew Schick had 19 as they tried to pick up some of the scoring burden. They look to rebound and finish the calendar year out on a high note with a W over Team Kaplan on Sunday Night.

8. Team Jones (Chicago Trolley) – 4-3

Up to #8 this week is Team Jones, Winners of their 3rd straight, and at their highest Ranking of the Season. They showed flashes in the first four weeks but their schedule was brutal.. They are now looking even better and the Wins are following.. They defeated Team McNichols on Sunday Night in one of the better Games of the Night. A McNichols group who came into the Week at 5-1. Both Captain Gilles Jones and Garrett Staniec had 21 in the Win. Great to see Garrett Staniec back to his full ability out there after getting back from a knee injury in season’s past.. Ron Nandi also had 15 in this one.  They will try to make it 4 in a row to close out 2016 against #14 Team James in Week 8.

9. Team McNichols (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – 5-2

Team McNichols took a small step back on Sunday Night against Team Jones. They were a bit short-handed, like many of the Teams in Week 7, and dropped their 2nd in their last 3 Games. These guys are still right there with the League’s best and no reason to panic. Yazin Akkawi scored 13 to lead them. They finish 2016 with another tough test.. They will take on #5 Team Sternberg, who currently sits a Game ahead of them in the Standings. This should be a good one to close out the calendar year.

10. Team Gutman (Live Clean CHI) – 3-4

Back into the Top-1o this week are the Defending Champs Team Gutman.  Remember, we mentioned it in last week’s Rankings.. They are actually now ahead of their pace that they were at a year ago before going on a tear post Winter Break. They got a sound Win at the end of the Game against Team Cohen on Sunday and showed why they were such a tough out last Spring. Marin Kukoc had 20, Chris Kozloff had 16 and Captain Jordan Reisner had a dozen. They look to pull to an even 4-4 next Sunday when they close out 2016 with Team Harris before recharging the batteries and really setting sights on the Repeat.

11. Team Purimetla (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 4-3

Back in the Winner’s Circle in Week 7 is Team Purimetla, who rise a couple spots in the Rankings as a result. On Sunday, they took it to Team Silver early and often in route to a 25+ PT W.  They have shown that when they are at their best, they are really tough to beat. Derek Reich had 22 to lead them in scoring. They will be tested in Week 8 with an underperforming Team Cohen crew who is better than their record indicates. They need to be careful and not sleep on them. If they play their best ball once again they will head into the Winter Break with a 5-3 mark. Not bad for their first run in the Chicago Hoops League.

12. Team Harris (Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap) – 2-5

The story has been a simple one for Team Harris this season. They are a group that last season finished #2 in the Regular Season and when they have taken the court this season with their full group ready to go, they look just as good if not better than the dominant squad from a year ago.  However, they have not been at full strength for much of the season due to various reasons and it has certainly hurt them in the win/loss columns. Sunday was another example when they were just too undermanned to stick with #3 Team Malvin for 44 minutes. Eric Handrich had 21 and looked great in the paint while Mike Goldstein also had 20 in this one. These guys are going to get to full strength at some point in 2017 and that is a very scary proposition for the rest of the League.. They are really a sleeping giant. They will take on Defending Champs Team Gutman to close out the 2016 calendar year.

13. Team Zimmerman (MB Financial) – 3-4

It has been a very long time since we’ve seen Team Zimmerman drop back to back Games. This is a group that has had such great consistency throughout the years and they are just struggling to get all of the new pieces gelled with their core. The talent is unquestionably there. Lucky for them, they have another 12 Games during the Regular Season and you can rest assured they will head into the Playoffs with a winning record, there’s no doubt about it. Matt Toth had 24 and Dave Altman went for 20.  They are going to have to play their best though this coming Sunday to avoid the first 3-Game Losing streak in Franchise history as they get 2x Champs and #1 Team Lalez to close what was a great 2016 for this Franchise. That should be a fun one.

14. Team James (Chipotle) – 1-6

Team James closed out their first W of the Season on Sunday Night and as a result hopped into the final spot in the Rankings.  This group has been so close in recent weeks but finally broke through on Sunday Night and against a very formidable Team Zimmerman squad. A group that former Teammate Dave Altman resides with. Their top 3 scorers all had 22 points in this one and that balance helped lead to the Win against last season’s Runners-Up.. Captain Christian James, Scott Sangster and Kyree Beamon led the way. This is a crew that can get hot and really go on a run right now. There are no easy Games in this League, every Team is talented, as Team James can attest.. However, they have a stretch on their Schedule right now where they will not play any Teams currently Ranked in the Top-7 until mid-February. They have a real shot to climb back into the middle of the pack in the Standings to start 2017. First, they will need to finish 2016 and have a hot #8 Team Jones awaiting.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Apuli (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 1-6

Were going to treat Sunday as just wrong place at the wrong time for Team Apuli. They have been playing their best ball of the season over the past couple of weeks but happened to come across the 2x Champs Team Lalez on Sunday Night and did so without most of their starting line-up. It was not a recipe for success. Dom Slezas led them in scoring with 13 and in his debut Adam Harris 8 points. Adam is brothers with Captain Brian Harris of Team Harris and is also near the all-time lead for career Games Played in All Sports Series. Team Apuli looks to end the year on a high note and give them some MO heading into 2017 when they take on Team Schwartz this coming Sunday, a Team that sits just a Game ahead of them in the Standings.

Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – 2-5

They went down to the wire with Defending Champs Team Gutman on Sunday Night but couldn’t come away with the much needed W. They have now dropped 4 in a row and are certainly feeling it. This group is better than record indicates, with or without Justin Bowen, they still have a lot going for them.. They just need one to go their way and let them take a breath..

They conclude 2016 with Team Purimetla in Week 8, which starts a span of 4 straight Games against Teams currently with Winning Records.. They can get Wins in that stretch, they just need to play a complete Game.

Team Deutsch (Meli Cafe) – 1-6

Team Deutsch has had a rough go of it lately. Much of that can be attributed to their tough schedule. They’ve played 3 Teams currently in the Top-8 and @3 Team Maione looms to finish the 2016 calendar year. It will get easier, and they will play better. This is a group that has some cornerstones but the roster has been somewhat of a revolving door early on in the season and that has hurt them.. Jeff Shukis had 22 points to lead them here.  As mentioned above, they finish 2016 with the tough Team Maione and then can retool during the Winter Break.

Team Kaplan (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-5

There 2-0 start does seem like a long time ago but this is a group that is still (yes, still) learning each other’s Games. This is a virtual Free Agent Team that has competed just a handful of times together, less when you think about guys being in and out of the line-up. They will be fine and need to remind themselves of that. They had a frustrating night against Team Kozin on Sunday. A squad that has gone to back to back Championship Sundays (finishing in 2nd and 3rd in the past two seasons). They give most Teams issues. Tred Dean once again was their leading scorer. They are more talented than their record and they will break out of this slump.. They close out 2016 against #7 UC Booth before coming back and starting fresh in 2017.

Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 2-5

Team Schwartz had been playing some really good ball since November. On Sunday Night they played without a huge chunk of their starting lineup and coupled that with a Game against #2 Team Maione. It was a rough evening. They should just delete this one from their minds as this was not an accurate portrayal of where they are at currently. Jason Vismantas had 21 and Jon Sider had 19 on Sunday. They look to get back to the Winner’s circle to close out 2016 against Team Apuli who they sit 1 Game ahead of in the Standings.

Team Silver (Benjamin & Shapiro Law) – 0-7

Finally is Team Silver. They had a hungry Team Purimetla squad and things didn’t go their way. Once again they had a short bench and it really is hurting their record. This is a group with enough to get Wins (and they will) but they are going to need their full stable of guys to get it done. It’s just too tough to sustain 5 or 6 guy line-ups over the course of a grueling 44-minute Game. Gage Coleman led the scoring charge with 27. Can they snap the skid and end 2016 on a high note? They will take on last season’s 3rd place finishers Team Kozin before Winter Break.

That’s it for Week 7. See everyone back at it on Sunday for Week 8!
