Power Rankings

1) Team Sig Chi (Le Brocq Lawyer) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points

In most All Sports Series Leagues, the #1 spot is reserved for the Defending Champs.. Well, with this being the first season in Austin, the race for #1 was wide open as we exited Week 1.  Team Sig Chi sealed the deal to be Ranked #1 after not only getting a big time W but they also were the only Team to score over 80 points and the margin of victory was 50+.  Don’t see a dominating performance like that very often. They have more than earned their spot and now will have a host of Teams hunting them..

2) Team Kappa Sig (cea Study Abroad Green) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points

Coming in just behind #1 Team Sig Chi after Week 1 is Team Kappa Sig led by Captain Drake Stacy.  They will be remembered for having the first Win in Austin League history.  They earned a 17pt W over Team ZBT SO Levenfeld to open the night. Chris Rohrbach was the high scorer for these guys with double digits.  They appear to be a very deep squad and are going to be a beast all season long.  Next week they will get the other Team ZBT SO squad, led by Danny Koretz.

3) Team ZBT SR (Chipotle) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points

At #3 we have our first of many ZBT squads in the League.. No surprise that it is the elder statesmen – the Seniors – who are leading the ZBT charge.  This group has more All Sports Series experience than any other group in the League.. Max Shiner and Cobey Koretz have been through the huge Summer College/Prep League and there’s no doubt that experience will help them throughout the rigorous season.  Doesn’t hurt them to have a scorer like Jeremy Berman either.. He totaled 30 points on the night in a dominating performance.  They get Team Sammy next week in Flag Football.

4) Team Pike (StudentCity) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points

Also earning a big Week 1 Win was Team Pike. With the largest Roster in the League they have plenty of talent to choose between for each and every sport. They clearly had their Hoopers carefully selected on Wednesday Night and were just too much for Team Fat Sal’s Deli. Nick Sorsby was their leading scorer with 17 points. They will have Softball next week in one of the biggest matchups of Week 2 against #5 …

5) Team SigEp (SLA Insurance) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points

As we get into the #5 and #6 range, these Teams still won in Week 1, but have legit gripes for not being closer to the top of the mountain.. Team SigEp is led by Sophomore Matthew Johnson and they earned a victory against Team ZBT JR to close out Week 1 with a large W.  Captain Matthew Johnson had 15 points and Austin King had 14 on Wednesday Night.  As stated above, they have #4 Team Pike in Softball next Week in a really big early season Game.

6) Team Sammy (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points

Last but not least in terms of the Week 1 Winners is Team Sammy, captained by Max Caputo. They won what was the StudentCity Game of the Night in Week 1.. They earned a 4pt victory over Team ZBT SO Koretz in a Game that really came down to the wire.  Both Cameron Rubenstein and Bret Silvers were in double figures and impressive in what was really a defensive affair.  They get #3 Team ZBT SR in what could be the StudentCity Game of the Week yet again.. Flag Football will be the platform for that one.

7) Team ZBT SO Koretz (cea Study Abroad Gold) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points

The few All Sports Series veterans that we have in the Austin League can attest.. In every Week 1 Power Rankings we always highlight the Team that lost the Game of the Night.. They are clearly one of the better Teams out there but drew a tough match-up in Week 1.. While the other Team leaves feeling great.. The Team who came up short has extra motivation the rest of the way.. That extra drive often can create some greatness.. Team ZBT SO Levenfeld is that group.  They are as talented as any.. They fell to Team Sammy at the very end of a great Game.  Noah Gaines had a huge 27 points for his squad. They look to enter the Top-5 next week after a huge battle with #2 Team Kappa Sig in Flag Football.

8) Team ZBT JR (Spikeball) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points

Last Team into the Power Rankings this week is Team ZBT JR led by Captain Brent Rubin. They took a Loss from Team SigEp in Week 1 but showed that they have a lot of talent on the Roster.  You can expect them to move up following the opening week. Skyler Tullman was their leading scorer with 14 points.  They have a very tough matchup with #1 Team Sigma Chi coming up next week on the Softball diamond.  If they can pull out a W, it will surely shake up next week’s Rankings!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Fat Sal’s Deli – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points

Team Fat Sal’s Deli is not only one of our fantastic sponsors but they are also a part of the League and led by Matt Feigin.  They are the oldest guys in the League and are hungry to take home the first Austin League Crown.  Brian Rosen is among the several talented players on the Roster and a member of the UT Law School.  They fell to Team Pike in Week 1 but look to bounce back in Week 2 against Team ZBT SO Levenfeld in Softball.

Team Fiji (popchips) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points

Captain Will Deer and co. are going to be a strong unit this season.. They fell to Team ZBT SR in Week 1 but will surely get on the Winning track sooner than later. They have Flag Football in Week 2.

Team (TOW Caps) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points

Team ZBT SO Levenfeld (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points

Need to give a reminder that this section of the Power Rankings is Alphabetical Order. Led by Captain Eli Levenfeld, this group is the only in the League to have a Captain who has done this before. Eli has been a Captain in the Summer College/Prep League.. There is a ton of value in that. Grayson Sheena had 15 points in Week 1 and looks to be a nice foundational piece for them. They have Team Fat Sal’s Deli in Softball in Week 2.

That’s it for the first ever Austin Power Rankings article. Good Luck on Wednesday Night.
