2016 Austin – Week 2 (Sept. 28)

Updated: October 3, 2016

The Austin League moved outside for the first time in its existence for a Week of Softball and Flag Football action. When the dust settled we were left with a few Teams still undefeated on the Season and the three of them are at the top of the Power Rankings this Week. For the second time in two weeks, we have a new Team at #1.. We’ll see who that is in just a moment.  Teams will flip their sport from Week 2 to Week 3 and by next Week, each Team will have played Hoops, Softball and Flag Football!

Power Rankings

1. Team Kappa Sig (cea Study Abroad Green) – Currently tied for 2nd with 30 points.

They came in at #2 in the very first Power Rankings and then put on a show Thursday Night to claim the top spot. They defeated Team ZBT SO Koretz 47-0 on the gridiron. Austin Reeves had 4 TDs in this one. Drew Van Norman and Tommy Price also grabbed a couple of their own. They have now looked very strong in both Hoops and Flag Football which bodes well for their Playoff run — those will be the two sports played in the Playoffs. Can they stay unbeaten in Softball next week?

2. Team Sammy (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 2nd with 30 points.

Keeping pace with #1 Team Kappa Sig is Team Sammy. They move up 4 spots all the way to #2 this week as they also stay undefeated following Week 2. They got a big time W in Flag Football against Team ZBT SR on Wednesday Night.  The Game was scoreless heading into the final two minutes when they finally were able to punch in a score, then the floodgates opened.. They forced a safety and scored again to get the 14-0 W. Nick Kreider, Adam Schor and Jack Settleman all found the end zone here.  They will try to get to 3-0 against a feisty Fiji squad on Wednesday Night.

3. Team SigEp (SLA Insurance) – Currently in 1st with 35 points.

They got their easiest 20 points of the season on Wednesday and stayed unbeaten in the process.  They have Team Fat Sal’s Deli in Week 3.

4. Team ZBT JR (Spikeball) – Currently tied for 4th with 20 points.

Jumping up all the way from #8 last week to #4 is Team ZBT JR. They utilized a decisive W over last week’s #1 Team – Sigma Chi – in Softball to really climb the Ranks after their first W of the campaign. Jake Taub was a monster at the plate going 4 for 4 with 4 RBI. Parker Rasansky, Skyler Tullman and Captain Rubin all had clutch days at the dish as well. Can they keep the momentum going against Team Pike in Flag Football next week?

5. Team Sigma Chi (Le Brocq Lawyer) – Currently tied for 6th with 15 points.

A week after getting to the #1 spot, they fall down a bit to #5.  They looked absolutely dominant on the Hoops court but it just didn’t correlate to the Softball diamond. Luckily for them, it’s the last they will see of Softball this season and they can just put it behind them. They are clearly among the best Teams in the League and happen to catch ZBT JR in one of their best sports.. Their quest to get back to #1 begins in Week 3 with Flag Football against Team ZBT SO Levenfeld.

6. Team ZBT SO Levenfeld (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 4th with 20 points.

After earning their first W of the season on the Softball diamond Wednesday Night against Fat Sal’s, they get into the Rankings for the first time at #6.  It was a total Team W by a score of 7-3. Their Defense was really strong throughout this one. Alex Balser had a great day at the plate going 4 for 4 and knocking in a few runs.  They are going to have a tough test with #5 Team Sigma Chi this coming Wednesday. A win will certainly vault them into the Top-5.

7. Team Fiji (popchips) – Currently tied for 6th with 15 points.

Another group earning their first points of the Season was Team Fiji who got a Win in Flag Football on Wednesday Night. In a Week where many Teams struggled Offensively on the football field, Team Fiji, was certainly not one of them.. They scored 30 points on the night. A big reason why was Will Deer who had a few TDs. William DeVilbiss and Omar Barakat also got into the scoring frenzy with a couple scores. They have #2 Team Sammy on Wednesday Night on the Softball diamond.

8. Team ZBT SR (Chipotle) – Currently tied for 6th with 15 points.

They were on the cusp of grabbing their second Win of the Season with just a few minutes left in their Flag Football Game with #2 Team Sammy.  The Game was tied heading into the closing minutes but they just couldn’t get that go-ahead play and eventually dropped it.  They clearly are among the League’s best though and you can bet they are going to rebound quickly.. They should be one of the better Softball Teams in the League and they will get a chance to prove it against their younger bros.. Team ZBT SO Koretz on Wednesday Night.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order[/highlight])

Team Fat Sal’s Deli – Currently tied for 10th with 0 points.

Came up a bit short in Softball this past week against Team ZBT SO Levenfeld. While they are still searching for their first W they have shown flashes. Captain Matt Feigin made his All Sports Series debut and went 2 for 3 at the plate. Alex Pinder and Adam Berenson also went 2 for 3 with each driving in run.  They will have a tough test with #3 Team SigEp in Flag Football on Wednesday Night. A win there would be a big statement and a shake-up at the top of the Rankings for sure.

Team Pike (StudentCity) – Currently tied for 6th with 15 points.

Team (TOW Caps) – Currently tied for 10th with 0 points.

Team ZBT SO Koretz (cea Study Abroad Gold) – Currently tied for 10th with 0 points.

No Team in the League has had as rough of a schedule to start the season as these guys.. They are getting Teams in their best sports.. It’s unlucky but those things have a way of usually working themselves out. The best they can do is put last week behind them and look forward to Softball where they can certainly do some damage and with a Win leap over some Teams in the Standings. They are going to be just fine!

That’s it for Week 2. Good Luck to everyone in Week 3!
