2016 Bloomington – Playoff Preview (Nov. 2)

By
Updated: November 7, 2016

We have come along way since September and the Regular Season will now turn to Playoff season. It is the best couple of weeks of the year and one Team is going to go on a run that will cement them in Bloomington League history.  We are going to break down each and every match-up for next week’s Opening Round and Elite8 Games.  10 Teams will enter and only 4 will leave with their Playoff lives in tact. This coming Wednesday we’ll be on the gridiron for Flag Football before moving back indoors to the Hoops court for the Final4 and Championship!

As a reminder on Playoff Format — the Top-10 Teams will qualify for the single-elimination Playoffs.. The Top-6 automatically are in the Elite8 while seeds 7-10 will compete in an extra Opening Round of Flag Football with the Winners comprising the final two spots in the Elite8.  From there the Final4 and Championship will be Hoops!

Playoff Preview

Opening Round

7. Team ATO SO1 (SLA Insurance) v. 10. Team ATO JR (Bakehouse Gray)

Winner plays 2. Team Delts JR/SR

How great is this? We are going to have an ATO showdown in the Opening Round with a spot in the Elite8 on the line. Both of these Teams know each other extremely well and actually met back in Week 5 on the gridiron.. It’s extremely difficult to beat the same Team twice in one season but these Sophs led by Daniel Chumbley will have the confidence that they’ve done it once before.  Both these groups have enough to pull the stunner and knock off #2 Delts JR/SR.. But first things first, only one can move on!

8. Team ZBT (Classic Lanes Gray) v. 9. Team AEPi (Classic Lanes Red)

Winner plays 1. Team Pi Kapps

This is the most interesting Opening Round Game we’ve seen in quite some time.. Not just in the Bloomington League, but anywhere… Here’s why.. This is a Rematch from the 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. Now, only one of them can even qualify for the Elite8. Just crazy.  #9 Team AEPi are still the Defending Champs in Bloomington. They haven’t had a storybook title defense but until someone knocks them out.. They are the Champs.. Then, on the other hand, you have #8 ZBT who a year ago in this EXACT SAME position, went on to Win not just one Game but TWO and stunned the #1 seed en route to the Championship Game as a Cinderella where they came up just short.  All eyes will be on this Game especially with those that belong to #1 Pi Kapps whom will face the Winner right at the conclusion of this Game.

Elite8

1. Team Pi Kapps (Bakehouse Black) v. Winner 8/9

All season long, Teams had been chasing Delts JR/SR who were out in front from the jump.. Team Pi Kapps stayed hot on their heels and seized the opportunity when it presented itself.  They, like Delts JR/SR, only dropped a Flag Football Game to #5 Team Sammy this season.. They wound up tied with Delts JR/SR for the top spot and due to a harder Strength of Schedule got the nod as the #1 seed.  A remarkable feat for their Rookie Campaign. Their Captain John Phipps knows full-well that upsets happen in the All Sports Series Playoffs as he helped Win a Crown as a #7 seed a couple Summers ago.. He knows to keep his Team Focused. They are going to be tested early and often in this run to the Crown.. They will get the Winner of the Championship Rematch between 8. ZBT and 9. AEPi.. Either way they will be trying to stop a top contender.. Should be fun!

4. Team ATO SR (The Gourmet Cafe Blue) v. 5. Team Sammy (popchips)

When the Bracket was finalized, this match-up really jumped off the page.. Had one or two things gone differently, this could have been a Final4 Game or even the Championship Game.. Instead, they will meet in the Elite8 and only one can qualify for the League’s final night.. Both Teams have had past All Sports Series Playoff success.. Team Sammy went to the Final4 a year ago and much of ATO SR just went to the Championship of the Summer College/Prep League as Team Arenson. They are both hungry for that elusive first Crown.  This is going to be a well-played Game by two veteran Teams and the Winner will move one step closer to fulfilling their ultimate goal. Get your popcorn ready!

2. Team Delts JR/SR (StudentCity Gold) v. Winner 7/10

They paced the League for the entire season.  From Week 1 on, they held at least a share of 1st place in the Standings and were #1 in the Power Rankings just about the whole way through as well.. So what happened? How are they starting the Playoffs as the #2 seed instead of #1?  Well, in Week 6 they fell to #5 Team Sammy in Flag Football. That left the door open, ever so slightly, for Team Pi Kapps to tie them by season’s end in the Standings.. That ended up happening and since they did not play each other head to head, we went to Strength of Schedule, where Pi Kapps had the tougher road.. Thus, Delts JR/SR start their quest for the Crown as the #2 seed.. It may be a blessing in disguise as they will not have to play the Winner of that crucial #8 ZBT v. 9# AEPi Game on Wednesday Night.. We know that they will take on one of the ATO groups for a spot in the Final4!

3. Team Delts SO (BBQ Pit) v. 6. Team ATO SO2 (StudentCity Lime)

Both of these Sophomore crews have to be really proud of their performances in Bloomington this Fall. It is their debut seasons and they both finished in the top half of a very competitive Bloomington League.  Delts SO vaulted all the way up to the #3 seed with a great second half of the Regular Season.  ATO SO2 turned it on in the middle of year and got most of their points early in October before hitting a bit of a rough patch lately.. Based on the way the Bracket broke down.. One of these Teams will certainly move on to the Final4 and we know that they will meet another Delts or ATO squad there.. As the Delts JR/SR will face the Winner of the ATO JR/ATO SO1 Game.. Basically, either one Delts Team or one ATO squad is likely to make their first Championship Game appearance.. Who is it going to be!?

Good Luck to all squads in the Playoffs!
