Playoff Preview

Opening Round

8. Team ZBT (Classic Lanes Gray) v. 9. Team AEPi (Classic Lanes Red)

Winner plays 1. Team Pi Kapps

We touched on it last week in the Playoff Preview, but this was an exceptional match-up in the Opening Round. It is a Rematch of the 2015 Bloomington League Championship Game and as a result we knew at least one new house would be involved in the Championship Game in 2016.. A spot in the Elite8 was on the line against top seeded Team Pi Kapps.

As the Game got underway, ZBT would strike first and second.. Building a nice lead that, they would be able to nurse for the remainder of the Game. Clay Barkley was excellent at QB and Harris Silverstein had a really nice game at WR in this one. Charlie Weil was a beast on the D-Line, giving the AEPi Team little time on Offense. 8. Team ZBT would advance to the Elite8!

For the 2015 Bloomington League Champs, it was just not to be in 2016. So many things have to go right for a Championship run and the bounces they received last year just didn’t happen again this Fall. They are a talented bunch and will certainly be back in the Playoff fold looking to add to their mantle the next time All Sports Series comes to Btown in 2017. Thanks for playing!

Elite8

1. Team Pi Kapps (Bakehouse Black) v. 8. Team ZBT (Classic Lanes Gray)

Just after clinching their berth into the Elite8, #8 Team ZBT had to re-coup and gear up for their battle against #1 Team Pi Kapps for a spot in the Final4. For those who have forgotten, it was a year ago that Team ZBT saw themselves with the exact same seed and in the exact same spot.. They were the #8 seed and had to win 2 Flag Football Games to earn their way to the Final4 and they’d eventually get all the way to the Championship Game… #1 Team Pi Kapps have been near the top of the Standings all season long and had no intention of ending their season early.. This was going to be a fun one..

Similar to their first Game, Team ZBT hopped out to an early lead behind great Defense and strong QB play from Clay Barkley. They would keep the lead into the second half.. Team Pi Kapps would try to start their comeback and they would gain momentum late in this one.. There were actually several late scores in the final 10 minutes of this high-scoring affair.. When the dust settled, ZBT was just too much! 8. Team ZBT would advance to the Final4 for the second straight year!

For #1 Team Pi Kapps, they had an incredible first run in All Sports Series led by veteran Captain John Phipps. They left without a Playoff W that they were desperately after but it won’t undo what was a great season. They were a pleasure to have in the League and a group that will be instant favorites next season. Thanks for playing!

4. Team ATO SR (The Gourmet Cafe Blue) v. 5. Team Sammy (popchips)

In many ways this was always going to the Game of the Night. Both Teams had realistic expectations of holding the Crown at season’s end.. At their best, both were among the  best the League had to offer and this one was likely going to come down to just a few key plays.. The Winner knew that 8. ZBT had pulled the upset just before they took the field and there was a real sense here that the Winner of this one could go all the way..

ATO SR would strike first. Go up 6-0. Sammy would match to knot the Game at 6 and that’s where it would stay for most of the second half.. Eventually ATO SR would get a go-ahead score and make it 12-6.. Team Sammy would get the ball in what would likely be the final drive of the game.. A few minutes remained as they started to move the ball forward. They would get it within striking distance. First Down, ATO would hold. The same on second down.. On third down, they couldn’t punch it in and we set up a Game-deciding 4th down play.. When the play ended, it was ATO SR who made the last stand. 4. ATO SR would advance to the Final4.

For #5 Sammy,  it was another great season. They didn’t wind up where they wanted to at the end but the journey was certainly a fun one. They ran into one of the best Teams in the League and fought them until the end. This is a group that is mostly Seniors and might just get a chance at the Crown one last time in the Spring, if rumors about an All Sports Series – Bloomington Hoops League are true. Stay tuned. Thanks for playing!

2. Team Delts JR/SR (StudentCity Gold) v. 10. ATO JR (Bakehouse Gray)

3. Team Delts SO (BBQ Pit) v. 6. Team ATO SO2 (StudentCity Lime)

We’re going to talk about this side of the Bracket together, as we have basically mirror images.. The Delts Teams come in as favorites against the ATO squads here in these Elite8 Games.. The Winners would meet in the Final4 which a chance to go to the Championship!

Both Games went the same way as well.. Delts started out fast.. ATO was undermanned in both contests and basically Delts just kept going. They were over early, no suspense needed.. 2. Team Delts JR/SR and 3. Team Delts SO would advance and will play each other in the Final4. This will assure that one Delts squad will take part in the Bloomington League Championship Game for the first time!

To all the SO and JR ATO Squads.. It was fun having each crew in the League. They all had their moments and just picked the wrong time to lack depth.. Delts have proved they are a tough out and it was just a tough match-up.. These squads will certainly be back. Thanks for playing!

That’s it for this week. Congrats to those advancing and thanks again to everyone else!
