They’ll get started with Kickball.  The Men’s League has a very competitive field this Fall, anchored by 2x Defending Champs Team SigEp.  They are looking for the very first 3peat in All Sports Series’ 7-year history.  A handful have gone Back2Back, but can Team SigEp do something that has never been done before!? Something we will certainly monitor all season long..

Men’s League Power Rankings

1. Team SigEp (Meijer) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Not only did the 2x Defending Champs earn the right to sit at #1 from their past accomplishments but they started their quest for 3-straight with a dominating Hoops performance over Theta Chi on Wednesday Night. Duane Farrington led with 17 and Nicholas Bobak had 13 as well.  These guys have several big roles to fill as many key contributors graduated last spring including past Captain Mike Groves.. However, if Week 1 is any indication.. They will be just fine. They’ll have softball in Week 2 v. #5 Team AKL.

2. Team Pikes (cea Study Abroad) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Team Pikes are back for their second season in the Champaign League and made a big statement on Wednesday Night.  They won the StudentCity Game of the Night by defeated Team ATO in the final minute of the Game.  Chris Baur hit key free throws down the stretch to ice the Game. Tim Griffin had 23 points to lead all scorers on Wednesday Night and Ryan Solomon added 18 to help secure the W.  This group Captained by Alex Merritt seems like they have all the necessary parts to take down Team SigEp in November.

3. Team Sammy’s 18s (Schweitzer Title) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Back at it again is Team Sammy’s 18s. They made up a bulk of the Sammy’s group from a year ago who secured the #1 overall seed heading into the Playoffs before bowing out in the Elite8.  This group is going to be at or near the top all season long. A big reason for that is the presence of Tommy Sutker who had 22 points in the narrow W over Rivals ZBT on night one.. Captain Justin Gerszonovicz is a vet and knows how to push the right buttons.. They are going after the Crown this Fall.

4. Team SAE 17-18s (iHotel Navy) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Another returnee, is Team SAE 17-18s led by Captain Chris Valvassori. Val has led as many All Sports Series Teams as anyone throughout the 7 years All Sports Series has been existence and he is still searching for that elusive Crown.. These guys made it all the way to the Final4 a year ago before they were knocked out in an Instant Classic just moments before the Championship Game.. They started off 2016 with a big-time W over Team Sammy’s 19s and seem to have everything needed for a Championship run!

5. Team AKL (Biaggi’s Purple) – Currently tied for 1st with 15 points.

Team AKL has historically been one of the strongest Hoops squads in the Champaign League and Wednesday Night they showed exactly why. Caleb Weise led the way in scoring with 18 points on the night as they took down Team SAE 19-20s in their debut performance.. This group has gotten close over the years but they too are seeking their first crown.. It’s a familiar story has #1 SigEp has dominated the Playoffs in the past few years.. AKL will get a chance to knock off the defending champs next week!

6. Team ATO (Starr Limo) – Currently tied for 6th with 0 points.

In every Week 1 Power Rankings we always highlight the Team that lost the Game of the Night.. They are clearly one of the better Teams out there but drew a tough match-up in Week 1.. While the other Team leaves feeling great.. The Team who came up short has extra motivation the rest of the way.. That extra drive often can create some greatness.. Team ATO is that group.  They are as talented as any.. They fell to Team Pikes at the very end of a great Game.. Matthew Kovatchis and Chris Klos both got into double figures in scoring on the night.. These guys will be just fine!

7. Team ZBT (iHotel Gold) – Currently tied for 6th with 0 points.

The final Team into the Rankings this Week is Team ZBT. They dropped a close battle with Rivals Team Sammy’s 18s on opening night.. This is a group that always finishes near the top and has a ton of success in every sport throughout the years.. All Sports Series vet Zach Aranas led the way with 13 in defeat. They are not going to stay down long as historically they are one of the best Softball Teams in the League. Look to them to try to crack the Top-5 soon.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team SAE 19-20s (Biaggi’s Gold) – Currently tied for 6th with 0 points.

Team SAE 19-20s got their first taste of All Sports Series on Wednesday Night and didn’t go exactly how they’d hoped.. They faced a very good AKL Hoops squad in Week 1.. They can turn to their older bros. of SAE 17-18s and be reassured that if often takes a few weeks to really gain some traction in the League. The League is full of very good teams/athletes.. They have a nice roster and once they figure a couple things out they can do some serious damage. Look for them to turn the page quickly with softball next week.

Team Sammy’s 19s (Farm Lake Barn) – Currently tied for 6th with 0 points.

This is the first time as a Team the Sammy’s 19s are competeing in All Sports Series. They do have some vets on the roster such as Matthew Levitz. Jack Kaplan led the way with 14 points in his debut performance against the always lethal SAE 17-18s squad.  This is a squad that should excel next week in 16” Softball as Sammy’s have always been among the best softballers in the League… Look for them to hop into the Rankings in short order!

Team Theta Chi (Chipotle) – Currently tied for 6th with 0 points.

The first ever All Sports Series Game for Theta Chi in Champaign didn’t go exactly how they had hoped. They drew the unenviable task of taking on 2x Defending Champs Team SigEp in Week 1.. It also happened to be in one of their strongest sports – Hoops.  It will only get easier from here and in that sense Theta Chi can breathe a sigh of relief. Captain Zach Boaz has a deep roster and you can expect them to turn the page quickly as the League moves outdoors for the next few weeks with softball and flag football. They’ll be ranked in no time!

That’s it for Week 1. Good Luck to everyone on Wednesday Night!
