2016 Champaign – Playoff Preview (Oct. 26)

Updated: November 1, 2016

On Wednesday Night we wrapped up the Champaign Men’s & Co-Ed League Regular Seasons!  Team GPhi/SAE 17s led by Co-Captains Tori Winner and Chris Valvassori finished in 1st for the first season of the Co-Ed League while 2x Defending Champs – Team SigEp – finished off the Regular Season earning 100% of the potential points and are on a quest to not just go Undefeated in 2016 but become the first Franchise in All Sports Series history to get a 3peat!  This Week we are going to run down all of the Playoff match-ups that are set to take place this Wednesday Night (Nov. 2) — unless the Cubs force a Game 7 and we’ll push back a week!

As a reminder on Playoff Format…

Men’s – All 10 Teams made playoffs. The Opening Round and Elite8 will be Softball. The Final4 is Flag Football and the Championship will be Hoops.

Co-Ed – All 6 Teams make the playoffs. The Quarterfinals and Final4 are Kickball. The Championship will then be Flag Football.

Men’s Playoff Preview

Opening Round

7. Team SAE 19-20s (Biaggi’s Gold) v. 10. Team Theta Chi (Chipotle)

Winner plays 2. Team Sammy’s 18s in Elite8

Team SAE 19-20s finished off the season strong and climbed up to the #7 seed as a result. They will take on #10 Theta Chi in one of the Opening Round Softball Games to begin the Playoffs. These two Teams did not play during the Regular Season — always fun to get a first-time match-up with Playoff lives on the line. Each season we see a Team from the opening round win not just one but two Games on the first night of the Playoffs to shock one of the top seeds en route to the Final4.  Last year, #1 Sammy’s 18s were up-ended in the Elite8. Can SAE 19-20s or Theta Chi do the same this year?  Only one will get that chance!

8. Team Sammy’s 19s (Farm Lake Barn) v. 9. Team SAE 17-18s (iHotel Navy)

Winner plays 1. Team SigEp in Elite8

These two Teams are basically polar opposites.. Team Sammy’s 19s are competing in their first campaign as a group and this will be their first Playoff run together.. While SAE 17-18s have been vets to All Sports Series for years and for many of them, this will be their final ride together.. These Teams met all the way back in Week 1 and we saw SAE 17-18s get the Hoops W.  A lot has changed over the course of the season and that should not be a big indicator of how this Opening Round Softball Game will go.. The Winner gets the first crack at dealing #1 SigEp their first Playoff Loss in 3 seasons.  Will Cinderella’s slipper fit one for one of these Teams? We’ll find out soon enough.

1. Team SigEp (Meijer) v. Winner of 8/9

It’s hard to give this Team their due but we’ll sure try.. SigEp is the reigning and defending 2x Champs of the Champaign League. Their last Playoff Loss came in the Fall of 2013.  They swept the Regular Season and are the clear favorites to take the Crown once again in 2016.. That will also mean they achieve the first ever 3peat in All Sports Series history (not in Champaign.. anywhere).. They will start the Playoffs in Elite8 Softball and take on the Winner of 8. Team Sammy’s 19s and 9. Team SAE 17-18s.  3 Wins away from history.

4. Team AKL (Biaggi’s Purple) v. Team Pikes (Cea Study Abroad)

This could be the Game of the Night. The 4/5 match-up has provided some classics in the past and this one should be no different. Both 4. AKL and 5. Pikes had great seasons, which is evidenced by their top-half finishes in the Regular Season.  They did meet just a couple weeks ago on the hardwood and it saw AKL grab the Win.. This Elite8 Softball Game will allow one Team to move on to the Final4 on Championship Wednesday.. It will also likely give them a shot at dethroning the current (and longstanding) kings – 1. SigEp – in what should be an unbelievable Final4 Flag Football contest. Only one of these Groups will get that opportunity however. Good Luck!

2. Team Sammy’s 18s (Schweitzer Title) v. Winner of 7/10

The Sammy’s 18s have been waiting a full calendar year for this. They have had a bad taste in their mouths from 365, as they were upset in last year’s Elite8, ending what was supposed to be a promising Championship run far too early. Tommy Sutker had to exit that one early as he ran straight into a fence in foul territory down the 3rd base line. It left his group a bit stunned and about 40 minutes later they were sent packing.. This year, they are determined to not let it happen again. They will take on the Winners of 7. SAE 19-20s and 10. Theta Chi in Elite8 Softball.

3. Team ATO (Starr Limo) v. 6. Team ZBT (iHotel Gold)

Above, where we say that 4. AKL v. 5. Pikes could be the Game of the Week, well.. This is the other Game we had in mind.. Both of these Franchises have had tremendous success in the Champaign League over the years but are looking for their first Crown.  They did not meet during the Regular Season. Both did win their Softball Games all the way back in Week 2 and both scored in the double digits.. Defense usually wins these Playoff Games however, when the weather gets colder, it becomes vital to not give away any free outs.  The Winner here may get a date with #2 Sammy’s 18s in Final4 Flag Football… Both groups would love a chance at that, only one can move on. Good Luck!

Co-Ed Playoff Preview

3. Team KKG/Phi Delt (Houlihan’s) v. 6. Team Bergdoll/Pikes (StudentCity)

Winner plays 2. Team Tri Delt/SAE (SLA Insurance)

The first Playoff Games in Champaign Co-Ed League history will take place on the Kickball diamond.  Team KKG/Phi Delt had a great season and finished 3rd in the Standings. They will take on 6. Team Bergdoll/Pikes in the Quarterfinals. Bergdoll/Pikes are better than their seed indicates though and this Game really could be the best we see all night. Either Team can Win and both Teams are good enough to continue on later in the evening and also defeat 2. Team Tri Delt/SAE.  They need to take it one Win at a time, but these two Teams have a chance to be the story of the Night!

4. Team Gphi/Sammy’s 18s (Spare Time) v. 5. Team Alpha Phi/ZBT (Sushi Kushi)

Winner plays 1. Team Gphi/SAE 17s (Schweitzer Title)

How fun is this? We get to renew the Sammy’s and ZBT rivalry in this one. We will also see two Teams vying for one spot in the first ever Champaign Co-Ed Final4. The Winner here will move on to face the top-seeded Gphi/SAE 17s.  You have to think that Gphi 18s will stop at nothing to get a shot to dethrone their big sisters who ran right through the Regular Season. Bragging rights are surely up for grabs.. Only one of these two Teams can move on to another Game later in the night and both are capable of winning twice on Wednesday. It’s truly anyone’s Game in what will likely be the most evenly matched Game of the Co-Ed Playoffs.

1. Team Gphi/SAE 17s (Schweitzer Title) v. Winner of 4/5

This crew cemented their top spot with another great week to close the season. They have been nearly unstoppable for weeks now and truly earned the #1 Seed. They have an automatic bid to Final4 Kickball where they will await the Winners of 4. Gphi/Sammy’s 18s and 5. Alpha Phi/ZBT .. This group is very confident and they likely don’t care who they need to take out on their path to the Championship, but you have to thin potentially playing against their fellow Gphis would add a little extra buzz to the Game. Either way, they have a full expectation to be competing for the Crown in a couple of weeks, and we do too.

2. Team Tri Delt/SAE (SLA Insurance) v. Winner of 3/6

They have been at or near the top all season long and now is their chance to get to the first ever Champaign Co-Ed League Championship Game. The road will not be easy though. They are going to be in the Final4 Kickball round but we aren’t sure who their opponent will be just yet.. Either 3. Team KKG/Phi Delt or 6. Team Bergdoll/Pikes will qualify just minutes before and come in with some momentum from Winning their first Game. If Tri Delt/SAE can ride out that first wave of momentum they should be just fine and we’ll be talking about them competing in the Championship a week from now!

That’s it for the Playoff Preview. Good Luck to everyone and Go Cubs!
