Updated: July 30, 2016

Here. We. Go!  It’s Playoff time!  10 Teams will enter the Chicago Co-Ed League on Monday Night all with their eyes on the ultimate prize. Need to first congratulate the Regular Season Champs – Team Stratton! They will enter the Playoffs as the #1 overall seed. The second consecutive year that a Rookie squad has finished in first place after the Regular Season. Of course, a year ago, Team Wolter took that route all the way to the Championship! We will go from 10 Teams all the way down to the Final4 by the end of Monday.

3. The Final4 and Championship will be a combination of Indoor Soccer and Flag Football in week 9 of All Sports Series.

Playoff Preview

Opening Round

7. Team Hakimian (Hakimian Imports) v. 10. Team Loewenstein (Teplitz & Bell)

Winner Plays 2. Team UM Alumni in Elite8 Volleyball

This is a tale of two very, very different Franchises who will have their Playoff lives cross-paths in the Opening Round of Volleyball.. Team Hakimian started the season on a tear and was among the final Undefeated Teams in the League. They were in the Championship a season ago, a Championship Game that they have played in a few times now. They have won just about every League that All Sports Series has to offer.. Except this one.  Is 2016 the year?  As for their opponent.. Team Loewenstein is about to embark on their first run in the Playoffs as a unit on Monday Night.  There’s no telling what will happen with Rookie squads as they partake in their first do or die Games.. We’ve seen double digit seeds make runs in the past. They just have to stay composed and believe they can do it.  Should be a fun one.

8. Team Wolter (Danley’s Garage) v. 9. Team Gordon (the Karyn Collection)

Winner Players 1. Team Stratton in Elite8 Volleyball

The other Opening Round Game features our Defending Champs, Team Wolter.  They are starting in a much different spot than they did a year ago as the #1 overall seed. They have had a tougher time in what is a much more talented Co-ed League this Summer. They also have to compete every week with a big bullseye on their backs.. It’s why only a select few have been able to repeat as Champs.  The truth is though, they have never lost an All Sports Series Playoff Game and they don’t plan on starting any time soon.. Team Gordon obviously wants to become the first Team to defeat Team Wolter in the Playoffs and earn the tag of “giant killers.”  They have enough talent on this roster to make a run at this thing but they’ll need to take it one Game at a time.. Winner gets top Team, Team Stratton in the Elite8.

Elite8

1. Team Stratton (Chicago Trolley) v. Winner of 8/9

One of the perks of being the #1 seed is that the top group gets to scout their potential Elite8 opponents as they duke it out in the Opening Round. Team Stratton can do some homework on both Team Wolter and Team Gordon before they take the court against the eventual Winner.. Whoever the opponent ends up being Team Stratton has to feel confident. They have been absolutely unstoppable this season and they’ve shown no real weaknesses. They are the heavy favorites to take the whole thing!

4. Team Lake (Orunje) v. 5. Team Mortier (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

In past Power Rankings this season there has been much made about how even Teams Lake and Mortier have been..

Example A, Week 1 Power Rankings, they were tied for 4th after splitting Volleyball 2 Games each: It’s extremely fitting that these two Teams were matched-up with each other during Week 1 and ended with  both Teams getting 6 points a piece.. Both squads have a tremendous amount in common..

Example B, Week 2 Power Rankings: The goal before the Week 2 Power Rankings was to break last week’s tie for 4th between Teams Lake and Mortier.. A week ago they split their Volleyball match evenly at 2-2 and there was no way to really break a tie.. Well, exiting this Week we are remarkably still locked in with both of these groups…

So is it surprising to see that they wound up tied at 66 points each.. Both with a share of 4th place to their names? No. Not at all. The beauty of this tie, that Team Lake would win because of point differential, is that the two of them get to square off in the Elite8 round and figure out who is the better Team once and for all. There’s a spot in the Final4 for one of these Teams. The Winner here can win the whole thing, but there’s no favorite heading into this one.. We expect a Game that is played to the wire.. Easily the Game of the Week here.. Good Luck!

3. Team Sternberg (SLA Insurance) v. 6. Team Reef (TOW Caps)

This match-up has the making of an instant classic. Both Teams have really turned it on during the second half of the season and it’s evidenced by their climbing the Standings into the Top-6 seeds. It’s a shame that they have to play each other so early on as both were dark-horse favorites to make a run at Team Stratton and the title.. Only one of these Teams will be able to move on following the Elite8. The one edge that Team Sternberg has, is experience. Most of their players, especially Captain Sam, have Playoff and Championship experience.  Will that be the difference? We’ll see on Monday Night!

2. Team UM Alumni (Al’s Beef) v. Winner of 7/10

There really is no better story in the Chicago Co-Ed League this Summer than the turnaround we’ve seen out of the UM Alumni group.  A year ago, they were preparing for an Opening Round Volleyball Game and had a quick exit from the Playoffs.  Fast forward to 2016 and they are awaiting the Winner of an Opening Round Game and sitting pretty as the #2 overall seed. They are among the favorites to take the whole thing but you can’t win the Championship in one night.. They need to take care of business in the Elite8 first.. They’ll get the Winner of 7. Hakimian and 10. Loewenstein.

That’s it for the Preview. See everyone at the Playoffs!
